Was the Lord’s Supper part of this weekly worship assembly?

Is that still true today?

1 Cor 11:26 (ESV) For as often as you eat this bread and drink the cup, you proclaim the Lord's death until he comes.

Why did the early church share the Lord’s Supper every Sunday?

Why do we do it?

Page 7: Lord’s Supper Part 1 God’s Plan for Us Gospel Advocate

1 Cor 11:26 (ESV) For as often as you eat this bread and drink the cup, you proclaim the Lord's death until he comes.

What do the bread and fruit of the vine represent?

1 Cor 11:24 (ESV) and when he had given thanks, he broke it, and said, “This is my body which is for you. Do this in remembrance of me.”

Matt 26:28 (ESV) And he took a cup, and when he had given thanks he gave it to them, saying, “Drink of it, all of you, 28 for this is my blood of the covenant, which is poured out for many for the forgiveness of sins.

What do we acknowledge when we participate in the Lord’s Supper?

Is it for everyone?

1 Cor 10:16 (NKJV) The cup of blessing which we bless, is it not the communion of the blood of Christ? The bread which we break, is it not the communion of the body of Christ?

1 Cor 10:16 (ESV) The cup of blessing that we bless, is it not a participation in the blood of Christ? The bread that we break, is it not a participation in the body of Christ?

Is it OK to refer to the Lord’s Supper as “communion”?

“A communion is an intimate connection. Many people enjoy hiking in the woods in order to have a sort of communion with nature … The Latin root of communion is communionem, meaning "fellowship, mutual participation, or sharing.“ – Vocabulary.com

Rev 1:10 (ESV) I was in the Spirit on the Lord's day, and I heard behind me a loud voice like a trumpet 11 saying, “Write what you see in a book and send it to the seven churches, to Ephesus and to Smyrna and to Pergamum and to Thyatira and to Sardis and to Philadelphia and to Laodicea.”

“The Lord’s Supper was observed on the first day of the week. The disciples were commanded to partake. Christians were commanded to assemble. There were assemblies for the purpose of eating the supper … The first day of the week is the only day identified as the time when there was a coming together for the purpose of eating the supper.” – Everett Ferguson, The Early Church

The SacrificeIsaiah 53:3-6

Page 14: Lord’s Supper Part 1 God’s Plan for Us Gospel Advocate

1 Pet 2:22 (ESV) He committed no sin, neither was deceit found in his mouth.

In order to properly observe the Lord’s Supper, we must be aware of the sacrifice Jesus made by going to the cross.

Did He deserve crucifixion?

Did He deserve crucifixion?

Rom 6:23 (ESV) For the wages of sin is death, but the free gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord.

Did He deserve death in any form or fashion?

Matt 26:53-54 (ESV) Do you think that I cannot appeal to my Father, and he will at once send me more than twelve legions of angels? 54 But how then should the Scriptures be fulfilled, that it must be so?”

Was His death an act of complete submission?

Could He have done anything to prevent His death?

Page 17: Lord’s Supper Part 1 God’s Plan for Us Gospel Advocate

John 10:17-18 (ESV) For this reason the Father loves me, because I lay down my life that I may take it up again. 18 No one takes it from me, but I lay it down of my own accord. I have authority to lay it down, and I have authority to take it up again. This charge I have received from my Father.”

Was death on the cross His choice?

Isaiah 53:1-2 (ESV) Who has believed what he has heard from us?[a] And to whom has the arm of the Lord been revealed?2 For he grew up before him like a young plant, and like a root out of dry ground;he had no form or majesty that we should look at him, and no beauty that we should desire him.

“Without Jesus Christ as its subject, Isaiah 53 is totally inexplicable and must remain forever a mystery; with Jesus Christ as its subject, this prophecy masterfully undergirds the entire New Testament message of the cross.” – Clyde Woods, Living Way Commentary: Genesis-Exodus Vol. 1

Isaiah 53:3 (ESV) He was despised and rejected by men; a man of sorrows, and acquainted with grief;and as one from whom men hide their faces he was despised, and we esteemed him not.

How was Jesus treated?

How did Jesus deserve to be treated?

Page 20: Lord’s Supper Part 1 God’s Plan for Us Gospel Advocate

Isaiah 53:3 (ESV) He was despised and rejected by men; a man of sorrows, and acquainted with grief;and as one from whom men hide their faces he was despised, and we esteemed him not.

How was Jesus treated?

How did Jesus deserve to be treated?

Do you think He was treated that way to fulfill prophecy, or did Isaiah prophesy how He would be treated?

Page 21: Lord’s Supper Part 1 God’s Plan for Us Gospel Advocate

Isaiah 53:4 (ESV) Surely he has borne our griefs and carried our sorrows; yet we esteemed him stricken, smitten by God, and afflicted.

In spite of the way He was treated, why did Jesus faithfully endure the cross?

Isaiah 53:4 (ESV) Surely he has borne our griefs and carried our sorrows; yet we esteemed him stricken, smitten by God, and afflicted.

In spite of the way He was treated, why did Jesus faithfully endure the cross?

Isaiah 53:4 (NRSV) Surely he has borne our infirmities and carried our diseases;yet we accounted him stricken, struck down by God, and afflicted.

Isaiah 53:5 (ESV) But he was pierced for our transgressions; he was crushed for our iniquities; upon him was the chastisement that brought us peace, and with his wounds we are healed.

What’s in it for us?

Page 24: Lord’s Supper Part 1 God’s Plan for Us Gospel Advocate

Isaiah 53:6 (ESV) All we like sheep have gone astray; we have turned—every one—to his own way; and the Lord has laid on him the iniquity of us all.

When we observe the Lord’s Supper, what should we keep in mind about His death?

Rom 6:23 (ESV) For the wages of sin is death, but the free gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord.

The RemembranceMatthew 26:26-30

Page 26: Lord’s Supper Part 1 God’s Plan for Us Gospel Advocate

Matt 26:26 (ESV) Now as they were eating, Jesus took bread, and after blessing it broke it and gave it to the disciples, and said, “Take, eat; this is my body.”

On the night of His arrest, Jesus established the Lord’s Supper with his apostles.

What kind of bread do you think He used?

Matt 26:17-18 (ESV) Now on the first day of Unleavened Bread the disciples came to Jesus, saying, “Where will you have us prepare for you to eat the Passover?” 18 He said, “Go into the city to a certain man and say to him, ‘The Teacher says, My time is at hand. I will keep the Passover at your house with my disciples.’”

Page 27: Lord’s Supper Part 1 God’s Plan for Us Gospel Advocate

Matt 26:26-28 (ESV) Now as they were eating, Jesus took bread, and after blessing it broke it and gave it to the disciples, and said, “Take, eat; this is my body.” 27 And he took a cup, and when he had given thanks he gave it to them, saying, “Drink of it, all of you, 28 for this is my blood of the covenant, which is poured out for many for the forgiveness of sins.

Does the bread literally become the body of Christ?

Does the fruit of the vine literally become the blood of Christ?

Page 28: Lord’s Supper Part 1 God’s Plan for Us Gospel Advocate

Matt 26:26-28 (ESV) Now as they were eating, Jesus took bread, and after blessing it broke it and gave it to the disciples, and said, “Take, eat; this is my body.” 27 And he took a cup, and when he had given thanks he gave it to them, saying, “Drink of it, all of you, 28 for this is my blood of the covenant, which is poured out for many for the forgiveness of sins.

What did Jesus want these emblems of the Lord’s Supper to bring to mind as we take them?

Page 29: Lord’s Supper Part 1 God’s Plan for Us Gospel Advocate

Matt 26:29 (ESV) I tell you I will not drink again of this fruit of the vine until that day when I drink it new with you in my Father's kingdom.”

Does Jesus partake in the Lord’s Supper with us?

Page 30: Lord’s Supper Part 1 God’s Plan for Us Gospel Advocate

Matt 26:30 (ESV) And when they had sung a hymn, they went out to the Mount of Olives.

We don’t usually associate this verse with the Lord’s Supper, but what did Jesus and the apostles do while they were gathered together?

The Redemption1 Peter 1:17-21

Page 32: Lord’s Supper Part 1 God’s Plan for Us Gospel Advocate

Eph 1:7 (ESV) In him we have redemption through his blood, the forgiveness of our trespasses, according to the riches of his grace,

How were we redeemed?

What did redemption do for us?

Page 33: Lord’s Supper Part 1 God’s Plan for Us Gospel Advocate

1 Pet 1:17-19 (ESV) And if you call on him as Father who judges impartially according to each one's deeds, conduct yourselves with fear throughout the time of your exile, 18 knowing that you were ransomed from the futile ways inherited from your forefathers, not with perishable things such as silver or gold, 19 but with the precious blood of Christ, like that of a lamb without blemish or spot.

How were we redeemed?

What did redemption do for us?

How should redemption affect our lives?

Page 34: Lord’s Supper Part 1 God’s Plan for Us Gospel Advocate

Do you think the Lord’s supper loses meaning because we do it every week?

Do you think the Lord’s Supper loses meaning because we do it every week?

What are the benefits of participating in the Lord’s Supper each week?

Page 36: Lord’s Supper Part 1 God’s Plan for Us Gospel Advocate

One of the most difficult tasks we face is clearing their minds of the cares of the world and focusing entirely upon the body and blood of Jesus.

Page 37: Lord’s Supper Part 1 God’s Plan for Us Gospel Advocate

To aid us in this process, it is fitting to read and reflect upon a passage of Scripture before and during the observation of the Lord’s Supper.

Page 38: Lord’s Supper Part 1 God’s Plan for Us Gospel Advocate

We must never get so used to partaking the emblems of the Lord’s Supper that we fail to focus our minds upon the intended meaning.

Page 39: Lord’s Supper Part 1 God’s Plan for Us Gospel Advocate

Each time we eat the Lord’s Supper, we should be encouraged that the Son of God really did come to earth and give Himself for our sins.

Page 40: Lord’s Supper Part 1 God’s Plan for Us Gospel Advocate

Because of His sacrifice, we can be redeemed.
