1The Nordstrom in Anchorage, Alaska is not reaching full potential. As the only high end retailer in Alaska, Nordstrom has the opportunity to monopolize the city of Anchorage .

My senior capstone project responded to these ideas, as well as the idea that a retail shopping experience can become more personalized and cater to a specific community

as more than simply the only high end place to shop.

concept statement:The newly designed Nordstrom in Anchorage, Alaska guides customers and employees to a better experience. Local elements are present within the design to create a sense of personalization and provide the opportunity for community involvement. Elements such as layout, verticality, connections and materials create pathways and guidelines which define spaces, encourage movement and direct circulation patterns toward a newly de-signed, . functional and energetic central core space.

The fusion of edgy materials, bold materials and simple, functional lay-outs will create spaces and studios that evoke creativity, collaboration and energy. Studio Inc. will be a connected workplace though the use of inte-grated systems furniture, low barriers and exciting group spaces built to inspire. An implied corridor along the eastern side of the building creates a vertical circulation path that promotes office connectivity, shares city views and maximizes the natural day lighting.

Studio Inc was placed on the eastern side of a ten story high-rise to maximize pas-sive natural day lighting during normal work hours. This placement also allows for passive heating during the summer and warmer months. Regional and recycled materials were specified throughout the project, along with the proposal of a new on-site mainstream recycling system.

bovill opera house

Our mission was to bring the historic Bovill Opera House back to life through the restoration of the existing structure, including the original stage, ticket booth, theater seating and wall murals, while also including the addi-tion of a new piano lounge and flex-ible gallery space where guests and community members can reflect and relax while enjoying Bovill’s oldest and most historic building as it was meant to be enjoyed many years ago.

The Bovill Opera House was built in 1908 and can be found on the National Register of Historic Places. It was the first opera house in the region which made it a focal point for entertainment. We are proud to say that after our proposed redesign and presentation to the community mem-bers of Bovill, Idaho, the community is currently in the process of raising funds to make our design a reality!
