Los Padres Times President’s Message: Hi Everyone,
I sure thought it was fall but Mother Nature had a different prospective for October. We had our State
Meeting in Santa Nella in October. We talked and voted on the new Youth policies and the E‐Bikes. BCHC is
now suing US Forest Service because of improper changing of regulations due to no public comment on the E
‐Bikes policy. We are still planning to have our Sawyer class. We will be having elections at our November
meeting. If you would like to be a part of the Board please let me know or any board member, we would like
to have you. Now, some good news, Lake San Antonio’s long trail is back open. You need to get a code for
the gate that is part of the receipt when you sign up for the long trail and should be done before you get
there. More information, of how to sign up at San Antonio Like is inside the newsletter. We are still going to
have a tour at Cal Poly, just getting things wrapped up with our host.
Our Xmas party will be at the Edwards Barn in Nipomo on Dec. 15th and the cost will be $10 per person. We
will have a silent auction and raffle, so please bring some items. We will be having the DJ from our Live Oak
Fall Ride last year.
Our Fall Camp and Ride was a lot of fun. We rode, ate lots of food on Friday night which we served Tacos
and Saturday, was an Italian night, played some horse games, and our raffle had lots of great items. Thank
you all for helping and bringing items for the raffle. It was great to meet some of the people; I knew the
names but not their faces, and it was fun to finally meet them in person.
Have a wonderful Thanksgiving and a blessed Holiday Season.
Shirley

Horse Camp at River Road – Santa Margarita Lake
Fundraising is at currently $3,150 including several donations from individuals as well as groups. We have also received several equipment donations in the form of gates and gate posts. The donation of the gate posts includes installation of both the posts and gates! If you know of other organizations who may be in-terested in donating funds or equipment, please either reach out to them directly or let me know and I can send a donation letter.
The Construction Committee met on September 27 and several tasks were assigned. The construction plan has been submitted to County Parks, and staff is preparing the Right of Entry/Adopt a Park Agree-ments. The agreements will be sent to County Counsel for review and upon approval, will be sent to the club for review and signatures. Our first workday is scheduled for December 6 at 9am at the River Road trailhead. The gate posts and gates will be installed that day, and we’ll also be repairing the existing bound-ary fence. This workday is contingent upon 1) getting the camping area mowed by County Maintenance, and 2) having the above agreements finalized.
Construction Committee: Kathy Redden, Patti and Fred Mensing, Jody Smith, Kaye Bruns, and Shirley Rasmussen and Greg Feinberg
Sapwi Trail Extension, Santa Margarita Lake
As many of you know, construction on this extension of the Sapwi trail has been going on for almost eight years (including layout and approval). I will be meeting with members of CCCMB and with Don Melin of County Parks on September 26 to discuss ideas and options on how trail construction can continue to move forward, including perhaps by hiring an outside crew to do some of the heavy work. There are retaining walls to build, heavy brush to cut, and over half of the trail still needs the tread cut in. It’s a big project and we’re looking for ways to help the member of CCCMB who works on the trail almost every weekend. More to follow…
Trail Alliance of SLO Co. / County Trails Advisory Group (TAC)
The two groups will be having a joint meeting on October 29. Sean Cooper, a County Parks Planner, will be attending and will give us an update on the Parks and Recreation Element (formerly known as the County Trails Plan). This should be an interesting meeting and I will provide a report at the November club meeting.
CCCMB Workdays: Fall/Winter Schedule
Santa Margarita Lake – November 16, 8:30am: Meet at White Oak Day Use Area. AHC will be providing lunch for this workday. Let’s get a good equestrian turnout! We’ll either be boating across the lake to work on the Sapwi trail extension or will be working on the Grey Pine trail to get it ready for the winter season.
Montana de Oro – November 24, 9:00am: Meet at the park headquarters above Spooner’s Cove.

Unit Fall Camp and Ride
Submitted by Brenda Mills
A fun time was had by all that attended the unit’s Fall Camp and Ride Fundraiser on October 18‐20. The Santa Cruz
County Horsemen’s Association grounds were a wonderful new venue for the annual event. We had the entire
campground; with amenities including horse pens for all, full bathroom and shower facilities, and use of their great
clubhouse. Next‐door access to Henry Cowell Redwoods State Park provided miles of beautiful trails through the
redwoods and along the San Lorenzo River. The unit’s Friday taco theme and Saturday Italian dinners were both
delicious and fun social time. Thank you, Angela Thompson, for preparing the meals ahead of time, and thank you
to the participants that cooked and cleaned up afterward. After a leisurely trail ride on Saturday, fun horse games
like sock sorting were played in the arena. Saturday evening fun included costumes and the raffle fundraiser. Top
costume honors went to Karen and Mike as Goldilocks and Bear; and Cory and Tye, as a Fairy and Psychedelic
Leprechaun! There were some very nice donated items for the raffle, and everybody came away having a good
time. Thank you Shirley Rasmussen and Greg Feinberg for organizing this great unit event!
