La Comunitat Valenciana se ha caracterizado en los últimosdecenios por un espíritu emprendedor que ha facilitado elbeneficioso dinamismo de sus principales sectores productivos.En el caso del turismo, además de fortalecer la tradicionalhospitalidad de los destinos de Castellón, Valencia y Alicante,se han tenido que reinventar espacios y recursos turísticos,frente a la creciente competitividad de otros destinos y regioneseuropeas.

En la mayoría de casos se han adecuado, con gran éxito deaceptación por parte de los visitantes, entornos ya de por síexcepcionales, dotándolos de nuevos atractivos, actividades yservicios respetuosos con la filosofía y personalidad del espaciooriginal sobre el que se ha actuado.

La playa dunar de los Arenales de Elx, por ejemplo, seha convertido en un espacio de entretenimiento único en laCosta Blanca, planteado en plena sintonía con la belleza deeste espacio litoral natural, ofreciendo la posibilidad de disfrutarde todo tipo de deportes náuticos o relajarse, meciéndose conla brisa, escuchando música en directo y degustando aperitivossaludables.

También en Chulilla, en el interior montañoso de la provinciade Valencia, el paisaje agreste, que se puede disfrutar a travésde rutas y excursiones, deja paso al relax de las propuestas desalud y belleza en su balneario junto a los bosques de la riberadel río Turia.

Si además se suman a la oferta nuevos alicientes, como elprimer parque visitable de huellas de dinosaurios de la ComunitatValenciana en Cinctorres, al que se están incorporando valiososhallazgos recientes, se está produciendo una revalorizaciónturística de estos espacios que aporta una decisiva diversidady liderazgo a nuestra oferta.

In recent decades, the Region of Valencia has shown anenterprising spirit which has boosted the beneficial dynamismof its leading productive sectors. In the case of tourism, thetraditional hospitality of Castellón, Valencia and Alicante hasbeen further strengthened and, due to increasing competitionfrom other European destinations, it has been necessary toreinvent tourist sites and resources.

In most cases, the sites being successfully adapted werealready, in themselves, rather exceptional, and they have beenfurther enhanced by new attractions, activities and servicesin keeping with the philosophy and character of the originalspace.

The dune beach of Los Arenales in Elx, for example, hasbeen transformed into the only sports and entertainment venueof its kind on the whole of the Costa Blanca. Standing inharmony with the natural beauty of the shore, it offers allkinds of water sports and the option to simply relax, bask inthe sea breeze, listen to live music and enjoy healthy snacks.

In the mountainous hinterland of Valencia, meanwhile, therugged landscape of Chulilla offers a variety of trails andoutings, followed up by the opportunity to relax and enjoyvarious health and beauty treatments at the town’s spa, whichnestles alongside the woodlands on the banks of the riverTuria.

Add to these the latest attractions such as the first everpark of dinosaur footprints open to the public – a park inCinctorres, where new finds are adding to the ever-expandingcollection – and it becomes clear that the reappraisal andrevitalisation of sites is unquestionably improving the diversityand standing of the Region of Valencia’s tourist offerings.

El congreso, con más de 350 expositores,se celebrará en IFA del 12 al 15 denoviembre del 2011

La cita es del 12 al 15 de noviembre, esos díasse celebra en el recinto ferial de Alicante el XIIICongreso Lo Mejor de la Gastronomía. Este evento,dirigido por Rafael García Santos, es uno de losmejores congresos gastronómicos que se celebranen España.

La décimo tercera edición de Lo Mejor de laGastronomía espera contar con más de 350expositores que mostrarán y venderán a preciospopulares, un sinfín de productos delicatessen,además de una amplia oferta gastronómica paratodo tipo de públicos.

La previsión es congregar en IFA más de uncentenar de barras y una docena de restaurantesdonde los profesionales y aficionados podráncomer los mejores manjares como pinchos, platos,pasteles y beber vinos y cócteles excelentes.

Aparte de esto, el auditorio del Congreso LoMejor de la Gastronomía acogerá a cerca de 700cocineros de primera fila a nivel internacionalque ofrecerán una serie de demostraciones

culinarias, ponencias gastronómicas, mesasredondas y talleres exclusivos, con demostracionesde cuatro horas de duración para grupos reducidosde 50 personas.

En Lo Mejor de la Gastronomía los participantespodrán deleitarse con prestigiosos campeonatosy concursos nacionales como el CampeonatoNacional de tortilla de patatas, el Campeonato ala mejor barra de pinchos y tapas o el PremioInternacional de cocina con aceite de oliva virgenextra Jaén, paraíso interior 2011.

El Gran Premio de la ComunitatValenciana 2010 coronó a MarcMárquez como Campeón del Mundode 125cc y puso el broche de oroal mejor año de la historia del moto-ciclismo español que obtuvo lostres campeonatos: el de JorgeLorenzo en Moto GP, el de ToniElías en Moto2 y el de Marc Márquezen el octavo de litro. Además, DaniPedrosa, Julián Simón y el valencianoNico Terol se llevaron los tres sub-campeonatos.

SEGORBE Y SUS TORRES MEDIEVALESSEGORBE AND ITS MEDIAEVAL TOWERS

Las atalayas de la Cárcel y el Verdugoson el Centro de Interpretación delas Torres Medievales de Segorbe,lugar que permite conocer la historiade la ciudad mediante audiovisuales,paneles y proyecciones. En la Torrede la Cárcel, situada junto a unade las antiguas puertas de accesoa la ciudad, se narra la historia deun ajusticiado. Esta torre es cilíndricacon un primitivo cuerpo inferior demayor diámetro y en el que se sitúanlas celdas que fueron utilizadascomo cárceles. El segundo cuerpose divide en dos plantas octogonales,con bóvedas de crucería estilo gótico,aspilleras y comunicación hasta laterraza por una escalera de caracolembebida en el muro. La altura esde 21.30 metros y su antigüedad,al igual que para la torre del Verdugo,se sitúa en torno al siglo XIV.

En la Torre del Verdugo recibeeste nombre porque fue viviendadel ejecutor de la justicia. Poseebóveda de crucería y el acceso a laterraza es por una escalera de ampliovuelo. Las características sitúan suconstrucción en el siglo XIVposiblemente durante la guerra entreunionistas y realistas o las queprotagonizaron el rey de Castilla,Pedro I El Cruel y el rey de Aragón,Pedro IV El Ceremonioso, en lasque Segorbe jugó un importantepapel.

Located in the chillingly namedTorre de la Cárcel (“Prison Tower”)and Torre del Verdugo (“Hangman’sTower”), the Mediaeval Towers ofSegorbe Visitors’ Centre reveals thehistory of the city through a seriesof audiovisuals, panels and projections.

Torre de la Cárcel stands alongsideone of the ancient gateways intothe city and recounts the history ofan executed man. It is a cylindricaltower with a primitive lower sectionwhich is wider and which housedthe prison cells. The second sectionis divided into two octagonal-shapedfloors with Gothic-style cross vaultsand loophole windows, and isconnected to the roof via a spiralstaircase embedded in the wall.The tower is 21.3 metres high and,like the Torre del Verdugo, was builtaround the 14th century.

The Torre del Verdugo was thehangman’s residence. It too has across vault, and is connected to theroof via a wide staircase. This 14th-century tower was possibly builtduring the war between unionistsand royalists or during fightingbetween the King of Castile, PedroI “The Cruel”, and the King ofAragon, Pedro IV “The Ceremonious”– struggles in which Segorbe playedan important role.

Tras el estreno, en el mes de noviembrede Boris Godunov de ModestMúsorgski, ópera en siete escenascon libreto del propio compositor ybasado en el drama homónimo deAlexánder Pushkin bajo la direcciónde Omer Meir Wellber, el Palau deles Arts ha programado otras óperasy poemas sinfónicos a cargo de laOrquesta de la Comunitat Valencianay Coro de la Generalitat Valencianaque actuarán bajo la batuta de direc-tores como Michele Mariotti, ValeriGuerguiev, Riccardo Chailly y elpropio Omer Meir Wellber.

Los días 22, 25, 27 y 30 denoviembre y 2, 27 y 30 de diciembre2011 y 4 de enero de 2012, la SalaPrincipal del Palau acogerá la puestaen escena de La Cenerentola deGioachino Rossini, un drammagiocoso en dos actos con libreto deJacopo Ferretti y basado en el cuentoCendrillon de Charles Perrault y enlos libretos de Charles-GuillaumeEtienne y Francesco Fiorini.

Roméo y Juliette, la sinfonía dra-mática, opus 17 de Hector Berlioz ylibreto de Émile Deschamps, basadoen la obra de William Shakespearetendrá lugar los días 8 y 9 de diciem-bre.

Finalmente, el Palau de les Artsacogerá la obra Ariadne auf Naxos,música incidental de Richard Strausscon libreto de Hugo von Hofmannsthallos días 16 y 18 de diciembre 2011en el Auditori del Palau.

The Palau de les Arts opera seasonopens in November with the seven-scene opera Boris Godunov by ModestMussorgski. Based on the play byAlexander Pushkin and conducted byOmer Meir Wellber, it is the first in aseries of operas and symphonic poemsscheduled for performance by theRegion of Valencia Orchestra and theChoir of the Generalitat Valenciana(Valencian regional government) underconductors such as Michele Mariotti,Valeri Guerguiev, Riccardo Chaillyand, of course, Omer Meir Wellberhimself.

The main hall will host performancesof La Cenerentola by Gioachino Rossinion the 22nd, 25th, 27th and 30th

November and the 2nd, 27th and 30th

December 2011, and on the 4th January2012. The two-act libretto for thisdramma giocoso was written by JacopoFerretti and is based on the story ofCinderella by Charles Perrault andon librettos by Charles-GuillaumeEtienne and Francesco Fiorini.

Roméo et Juliette, “symphoniedramatique” and Opus 17 of HectorBerlioz, with a libretto by ÉmileDeschamps and based on the playby William Shakespeare, will beperformed on the 8th and 9th December.

Un equipo de paleontólogos dirigidos por Andrés Santos-Cubedo, Maite Suñer y Marcos Martín, ha descubierto este verano en el yacimiento Anade Cinctorres, 133 fósiles entre los que destacan, seis vértebras, una escápula, cuatro huesos largos de las extremidades de un dinosaurioornitópodo y varios dientes de dinosaurios carnívoros. Los trabajos han sacado a la luz fósiles de dinosaurios del Cretácico Inferior, es decir, huesosde más de 125 millones de años. Estos hallazgos, sumados a los más de 700 fósiles recuperados desde 2002, han pasado a formar parte de lacolección museográfica del Palau de Santjoans en Cinctorres, mientras que las réplicas se muestran en el Parc Cultural Dinomanía, el primeryacimiento de dinosaurios visitable de la Comunitat Valenciana.

A team of palaeontologists led by Andrés Santos-Cubedo, Maite Suñer and Marcos Martín has discovered 133 fossils over the summer at the ANAsite in Cinctorres. The fossils include six vertebrae, one scapula, four long bones from the extremities of an ornithopod or bird-hipped dinosaurand several teeth from carnivorous species. The finds are of dinosaurs from the Lower Cretaceous period, meaning the fossils are over 125 millionyears old, and they have joined more than 700 other fossils which have been unearthed since 2002 to form part of the collection at the Palau deSantjoans in Cinctorres. Replicas of the fossils, meanwhile, are on display at the Dinomanía culture park, the first dinosaur site in the Region ofValencia to be opened to the public.

UN PARQUE PARA VERLas excavaciones se iniciaron en el yacimientode Ana en 2002 y, debido al número dehallazgos recuperados, en poco más de nueveaños se ha convertido en uno de los de mayorrelevancia científica de la Comunitat Valenciana.Por ello, este lugar forma parte del proyectoParc Cultural Dinomanía, impulsado por elAyuntamiento de Cinctorres, y cuyo objetivoes la difusión y divulgación científica de losdinosaurios descubiertos en la localidad.

El yacimiento Ana, que se encuentra a unosdos kilómetros de la localidad de Cinctorres,permite al visitante llegar hasta él dando unplacentero paseo a través de una pista forestalque ha sido acondicionada y adecuada parapermitir el acceso a todo el público. Gracias alos paneles instalados que contienen diferentesmódulos explicativos, el visitante puede conocerlos diferentes tipos de dinosaurios descubiertos,así como sus hábitos de vida. Además desdeel mirador del yacimiento puede observarse elrico entorno natural de la comarca de Els Ports.

La visita al yacimiento se hace por unapasarela que traza el recorrido y nos permitever las réplicas de huesos de dinosaurio. Éstasocupan la misma posición que los fósiles originalesdescubiertos. Gracias a los módulos que acompañana las réplicas, se puede conocer a qué especiede dinosaurio pertenece y a qué parte delesqueleto corresponde el hueso hallado.

Descubren a qué género pertenecenlos diferentes huesos fósiles y dientes expuestosen las vitrinas. Por ejemplo conocerán quealgunos de los fósiles de ANA, correspondena un Barioniquino, un dinosaurio carnívoro.En cambio otros son de un Iguanodon, undinosaurio herbívoro. La exposición tambiéncuenta con la réplica de un esqueleto completode un Iguanodon, de unos cuatro metros delongitud. Además, parte de los contenidosestán dirigidos específicamente a un públicoinfantil, porque los niños son auténticos espe-cialistas en dinosaurios.

SEEING IS BELIEVINGExcavations first began at the ANA site in2002 and, thanks to the large number offinds, it has since become one of the mostimportant scientific sites in the whole of theRegion of Valencia. As a result, it is now partof the Dinomanía culture park project whichhas been launched by Cinctorres Town Councilto publicise the local discoveries and sharefindings with the scientific community.

Located some 2 kilometres from the townof Cinctorres, the ANA site is accessible tovisitors via a pleasant stroll along the forestrytrack which has been specially adapted tomeet the needs of all ages and abilities. Thanksto information panels and their various explanatorymodules, visitors can learn about the differenttypes of dinosaurs which have been unearthedand about how they used to live.

A viewing platform at the site affords avantage point over the rich countryside of theEls Ports district, and walkways guide visitorsaround the site, enabling them to see replicadinosaur bones in the original positions theyoccupied when first discovered. Accompanyingmodules explain the species to which the bonebelonged and which part of the skeleton itcame from.

A MUSEUM FOR UNDERSTANDINGBack in Cinctorres, visitors can see the originalfossils dug up at the ANA site as part of themuseum collection at the Palau de Santjoans,which has organised an exhibition entitledANA, un jaciment viu (“ANA, A Living Site”)to disseminate the palaeontological discoveriesat Cinctorres.

The first part of the exhibition explains thefieldwork carried out by palaeontologists andhow the ANA site is being excavated. It alsoshows how the fossils are prepared once theyhave been sent to the lab. The second parttakes visitors into the world of research intodinosaurs. By investigating the genera to whichthe various fossils and teeth on display belong,we can discover that one of the fossils foundat the ANA site comes from a flesh-eatingdinosaur known as a baryonyx, while otherswere from a herbivore, the iguanodon – acomplete replica skeleton of which is on display,measuring around 4 metres long. Naturally,part of the exhibition is aimed specifically atthe real specialists in dinosaurs: children.

ENTRE DUNAS Y LAGUNAS...........................................................................Una buena parte de la playa, al noroeste de Elx,es de agreste naturaleza, enmarcada por un bosquede pino mediterráneo, y conserva todavía un espec-tacular cordón dunar. El Clot de Galvany, las playasdel Carabassí, y la Sierra del Cabo de Santa Polason tres áreas diferentes de la playa.

El primero, el Clot de Galvany es una lagunaque sufrió varios intentos de desecación con elfin de urbanizar la zona en 1978. En aquellosaños finales de la década de los setenta se realizaronobras de drenaje y movimientos de tierra quefueron paralizadas por la presión ciudadana. Trasestas obras se llevaron a cabo acciones deregeneración, conservación y educación ambiental,un esfuerzo gracias al cual se conseguió ladeclaración de paraje natural municipal por acuerdodel Consell de la Generalitat en el año 2005. ElClot de Galvany posee varios ambientes: las charcas,los saladares y los montes, por lo que se puedenobservar dos grandes agrupaciones vegetales: elespinar-tomillar en las lomas, como el palmito,espino negro, lentisco y tomillo y la vegetacióntípica de marjales y saladares como la sosa, carrizo,tarai y plantas acuáticas. Otra curiosidad de estaplaya son las construcciones defensivas del Clot

de Galvany, seis búnker supuestamente construidospor el ejército republicano, aunque nunca llegarona utilizarse pero que por su estratégica ubicaciónse han convertido en auténticos balcones sobre elMediterráneo y sobre el paraje natural.

PLAYAS DEL CARABASSÍ...........................................................................El segundo tramo, que coincide con las playasdel Carabassí, está formado por dunas actualesembrionarias, móviles, semifijas, fijas, en partecubiertas de pinos, y dunas fósiles de gran interésgeológico. La cercanía al Clot de Galvany le confierea la visita un especial interés. El Carabassí, al piede la sierra del mismo nombre, es una playa virgenformada por altas dunas recientes, en parterepobladas con pinos carrascos, y otras fósiles degran interés geológico.

La cercanía de los saladares y las zonas húmedasde Els Bassars y el Clot de Galvany, con los queconforma un mismo ecosistema, permite desfrutarde una variada fauna y vegetación autóctona entodo su esplendor, similar a la existente más alnorte, en L’Altet y Arenales.

Considerada como zona de protección ecológica,las tres playas que forman un único sistema dunarhasta la urbanización de Arenales, constituyen un

lugar muy apreciado para realizar largas caminatas–y no sólo en verano– tanto por sus cinco kilómetrosde trayecto ininterrumpido como por discurrir ensu mayor parte alejadas de edificaciones.

Finalmente, la sierra del Cabo de Santa Pola,una formación acantilada constituida por una seriede terrazas marinas emergidas durante la regresiónMessiniense, está surcado por gran número debarrancos que discurren hasta irrumpir en la zonalitoral.

Y este es el escenario natural en el que DanielParres, crea Geko Beach Club, buscando el enclavemas propicio de la playa y teniendo en cuenta unelevadísimo número de factores para ofreceractividades deportivas y de ocio y también, serviciosy atenciones. Para ello, Parres montó en los Arenalesuna infraestructura integrada en el entorno, undiseño exótico que refleja la realidad mediterráneay con el que se ha creado un espacio único en lacosta ilicitana.

BETWEEN DUNES AND LAGOONS...........................................................................A large part of this beach, to the northwest ofElx, is rugged and wild, framed by a forest ofMediterranean pine and still fringed by aspectacular line of sand dunes. It can be dividedinto three different areas: El Clot de Galvany,Las Playas del Carabasí and the Sierra del Cabode Santa Pola.

The first, El Clot de Galvany, is a lagoon.Several attempts were made to drain the lagoonin a bid to develop the area in 1978. But, bythe end of the ’70s, public pressure had put astop to the pumping and excavations, and workwas undertaken to regenerate and preserve the

area and to teach people about the environment– work which eventually culminated in it beingofficial granted municipal landscape status bythe Generalitat (Valencian regional government)in 2005.

El Clot de Galvany is home to various differenthabitats – ponds, salt marshes and mountains– which harbour two main types of vegetation:spiky and thyme-like plants on the slopes, suchas palmettos, buckthorns, mastic and thymeitself, and typical wetland vegetation in themarshes, such as saltwort, giant reeds, tamariskand aquatic plants. Also of interest are the sixdefensive bunkers on El Clot de Galvany, whichwere supposedly built by the Republican armyduring the Spanish Civil War but were neveractually used and which now make fantasticviewing platforms for surveying the sea and thesurrounding landscape.

LAS PLAYAS DEL CARABASSI...........................................................................The second stretch, very near to El Clot deGalvany, is known as Las Playas del Carabassiand is an assortment of sand dunes: embryodunes, mobile, semi-fixed and fixed dunes,dunes partly covered in pine trees, and fossil

dunes of great geological interest. Standing atthe foot of the Carabassi mountains, Las Playasdel Carabassi is pristine and unspoilt, formedby tall recent dunes, already partly clothed byAleppo pines, and other valuable fossil dunes. The proximity of the salt marshes and thewetlands of Els Bassars and El Clot de Galvany,which are part of the same ecosystem, meansthat visitors can enjoy the varied local flora andfauna in all their splendour. The plants andwildlife here are similar to those found furthernorth, in El Altet and Los Arenales.

Classified as an environmental protectionarea, the three beaches combine to form a singledune system which stretches all the way to theArenales residential development, making thema great place for long walks in either summer orwinter – a mostly undeveloped shoreline whereyou can stroll for some 5 kilometres.

The third area, La Sierra del Cabo de SantaPola, is an area of cliffs. These were formed bya series of marine terraces which emerged duringthe Messinian regression and are surroundedby many ravines which run down to the shore.

And it was here, on this natural stage, thatDaniel Parres, in search of the best beach sitein terms of sport, leisure and service potential,set up the Geko Beach Club. The exotic designof the club blends into its surroundings and isreflective of its Mediterranean heritage, standingas a unique venue on the Elx coast.

El río, que en sudiscurrir por Chulilla ciñe un suave recorrido, es tranquilocuando riega las huertas y vivaz cuando atraviesa las hoces,donde ha excavado angostos tajos entre paredes verticales demás de cien metros creando tranquilos remansos naturales,como el Charco Azul, la Peña la Judía, las Canales o elRemanso las Mulas, albercas en el cauce que permiten disfrutardel agua en todo su esplendor. The crystal-clear waters of the river Turia rise in Muela deSan Juan, in the Aragonese province of Teruel, before passingthrough Chulilla on their way to the Mediterranean. Firsttumbling and then meandering, the Turia flows through fieldsand caves, gullies and canyons, and, as it wends its waythrough Chulilla, it gently waters the orchards and gardensbefore reawakening and plunging into the local ravines. Herethe river has carved deep and narrow gorges with verticalwalls over 100 metres high, creating natural and peacefulbackwaters such as Charco Azul, La Peña la Judía, Las Canalesand El Remanso las Mulas – pools in which to enjoy the waterin all its splendour. 1/ SENDERO LOCAL 1-PR 74PLAZA DE LA BARONÍA-CHARCOAZUL-PLAZA DE LA BARONÍA................................................Longitud: 2 kilómetrosDificultad: bajaTiempo: 1hora y media

Todas las rutas salen de la Baronía,la plaza que recibe el nombre dela antigua Baronía de Chulilla, ins-tituida en 1274. La ruta deja atrásel núcleo urbano y lleva entre lasparedes rectas del Cañón del Turiahasta el Charco Azul, un remansonatural del Turia enorme y tranquilo.De vuelta al punto de partida, laruta pasa por otros remansos deaguas como la Peña la Judía, elRemanso las Mulas y las Canales,sobre este último, está la Cuevadel Gollisno y encima de ésta seve el barranco que lleva hasta otracueva, la Cueva del Tesoro. Poco apoco aparece de nuevo el puebloy tras un ascenso por empinadascalles, la ruta desemboca en elpunto de partida.

2/ SENDERO LOCAL 2-PR 72PLAZA DE LA BARONÍA-CUEVAS-PEÑETA-PLAZA DE LA BARONÍA ................................................Longitud: 1 kilómetroDificultad: mediaTiempo: 30 minutos

La ruta va hacia el mirador delantiguo matadero, desde donde seve el cañón del Turia, las paredeslisas de la Peña Mosén y, abajo enel fondo, el río Turia. En este miradorcomienza el sendero que lleva alas Cuevas. Continuando por él ytras salvar unos peñascos, se veenfrente la Cueva del Gollisno y lacueva del Tesoro. Abajo en la riberadel río, destacan los huertos denaranjos de Trascastillo. La rutacontinúa por el Pilón de las Tajás,cilindro calcáreo de unos diez metrosde altura, que apenas deja espaciopara el paso. Esta ruta bordea elpueblo por detrás hasta llegar almirador de La Peñeta, desde estepunto la panorámica es inmejorable,se ve el barranco Falfiguera por el

que discurre el PR-77, el montedel Frailecico y la Muela. Abajo elTuria sigue su tranquilo curso haciaMediterráneo.

3/ SENDERO LOCAL 3PLAZA DE LA BARONÍA-EMBALSEDE LORIGUILLA................................................Longitud: 8 kilómetrosDificultad: bajaTiempo: 3 horas

Es uno de los senderos de mayorbelleza de la red porque bordeauno de los puntos más hermososde los que puede hacer gala Chulilla:el Cañón del Turia. La ruta va hacia

el Altico y pasa por la Peña Mosén.Desde el Altico desciende bordeandoel Cañón del Turia. También pasapor la Hoz, un punto en el que laerosión del río ha formado paredesde hasta 160 metros de altura ydiez de ancho dejando tan sóloespacio para el tránsito de las aguasdel río. Cuentan en Chulilla que,en tiempos pasados, era punto depaso obligado para los madererosque portaban los troncos taladosdesde Moya y los montes de Castillahacia Valencia. La ruta bordea elCañón hasta llegar a la partida dela Pedriza. El camino acaba en unapequeña área en el pantano deLoriguilla.

4/ SENDERO LOCAL 4PLAZA DE LA BARONÍA-CUEVADEL GOLLISNO- CUEVA DELTESORO-PLAZA DE LA BARONÍA................................................Longitud: 3 kilómetros.Dificultad: mediaTiempo: 2 horas y media

La ruta desciende por las callesdel pueblo hasta el Turia, que cruzapor el puente de Los Huertos, cercade la huerta vieja de Chulilla. Siguede frente y llega hasta los pies delmonte del Frailecico, donde comienzael Cañón del Turia. Sube por elsendero hasta Trascastillo y dejaabajo los remansos de las Mulas ylas Canales. El camino sigue hastallegar a la Cueva del Gollisno. Enel pasado esta cueva era utilizadapor los pastores, para encerrar elganado por las noches. Un pocomás arriba está la Cueva del Tesoro,de varias plantas y a la que seaccede casi en cuclillas.

El camino se dirige hacia las Eras.Su trayecto discurre por una antiguaacequia que parte de la fuente elLebrillico y que canalizaba el aguahasta la plaza, llenando una balsadestinada al ganado y las caballerías.La ruta sube hasta la fuente delLebrillico y de allí continúa hastalo alto de la Muela, monte con mira-dores como el de la Cruz. De vuelta,el camino baja por el barranco deMortaina hasta el barrio de La Ermita.

6/ SENDERO LOCAL 6 PLAZA DE LA BARONÍA-CASTILLO-PINTURAS RUPESTRES-PLAZA DELA BARONÍA................................................Longitud: 8 kilómetrosDificultad: BajaTiempo: 3 horas

La ruta sube al castillo por el pueblo,desde donde desciende hasta losHuertos y se une a los PR-76 y 77.Durante este trayecto se bordea eltrazado del Turia, que riega toda lavega de la huerta. Un desvío a laderecha lleva hacia Sot de Cherasubiendo por el barranco Falfigueray dejando atrás la vista de Chulilla.Después de andar un kilómetro ymedio aproximadamente desde elcomienzo del barranco, hay unaindicación de las pinturas rupestres.

Tras volver y descender por el barrancocomienza el ascenso por elBarranquillo, desde donde se regresaa la Plaza de la Baronía.

7/ PR.76 CHULILLA-GESTALGAR................................................Longitud: 12 kilómetros Dificultad: BajaTiempo: 3 horas

Este sendero baja al río, pasa porlas ruinas del antiguo lavadero ytranscurre por un camino agrícolaque asciende hasta cruzar el barrancode Falfiguera, entre hermosos sauces,chopos y olmos. La sensa pasa porel camino agrícola del Plano, atraviesa

el Corral de los Rojos y deja a unlado antiguas caleras. La ruta llegahasta Fuente de la Rinconá y subea lo más alto del camino. La bajadallega casi al río, al otro lado delBalneario de Fuencaliente, famosopor sus aguas termales de interésminero-medicinal. La ruta bordeael Turia hasta la desembocadura delrío Sot en el margen derecho, muycerca del Corindón, antigua fábricade piedra esmeril derruida por lariada del 57. A la derecha se venlos restos de un acueducto romanoy a la izquierda unas caprichosasformas de roca conocidas en la zonacomo Picarchos. Tras pasar la Presade Molina llega hasta el BarrancoHondo, una zona de umbría. Trascruzar el barranco, la senda se enca-jona en una espectacular gargantaque el Turia ha excavado en la piedray discurre paralela a la pared. Uncamino lleva desde aquí hasta laPeña María y continúa bordeandoel río y algunas huertas hasta llegaral casco urbano de Gestalgar.

una bifurcación va a Sot de Cheray la otra al embalse de Loriguilla.Para ir a Sot de Chera se toma unasenda que cruza el barranco y luegoasciende hasta una atalaya de roca.La ruta sigue hasta la fuente delCerro Negro y continúa hasta elpuntal frente a la fuente, para des-cender después bruscamente porel otro lado de la montaña en direccióna Sot de Chera. Para la opción quelleva hasta el embalse de Loriguilla,una vez pasada la bifurcación quelleva a Sot de Chera, la senda giraa la derecha siempre paralela albarranco y lo sigue unos 400 metros.Luego por la rambla de Cubillas setoma una pista hasta cruzar el antiguocamino entre Loriguilla y Sot deChera y sigue a la derecha hastaotro cruce, donde empieza un des-censo hasta el embalse de Loriguilla.

9/ PR. 321 PELMA-BARRANCO LA HOYA-FUENTE DE LA RINCONÁ-ALTO DELA BANDERA-PELMA..................................................Longitud: 12 kilómetrosDificultad: mediaTiempo: 2 horas y 45 minutos

Esta ruta sale del área recreativa dePelma, una zona frondosa a tres kiló-metros de Chulilla, pasa por la FuentePelma, en el monte del mismo nombrey continúa por las Clochas de Targapor la carretera del balneario hastallegar a la Fuente de la Rinconá. Elcamino sigue por el PR-76 hasta eldesvío del PR-250. En ese punto sedesvía a la izquierda e inicia laascensión hacia el Alto de la Bandera,por los Picarchos, dejando atrás elBalneario de Chulilla. Tras culminar

la ascensión se ven las ruinas delCorral de Javier y se dirige hacia elmirador del Alto de la Bandera. Eldescenso es por el Losar.

This trail starts at the old abattoirlookout, which provides views overthe Turia Canyon, the smooth wallsof Peña Mosén and, in the backgrounddown below, the river Turia itself. Itthen heads to the caves, clamberingover several crags before arriving atthe Cueva del Gollisno and the Cuevadel Tesoro. Adorning the riverbanksbelow are the orange groves of

Trascastillo. The trail then continuesvia El Pilón de las Tajás, a limestonepillar some 10 metres high whichyou have to squeeze past, beforeskirting the back of the town andarriving at the La Peñeta lookout.The views are spectacular: theFalfiguera ravine through which thePR 77 runs, Mount Frailecico andLa Muela. Below, the river Turia flowsgently on its way towards the sea.

This is one of the most picturesquetrails in the area, running along theedge of Chulilla’s perhaps mostprized beauty spot: the Turia Canyon.The trail runs to El Altico via PeñaMosén and then drops down tofollow the line of the canyon. It alsopasses through La Hoz, where theriver has carved out walls up to 160metres high and just 10 metresacross, leaving barely enough roomfor the water to flow through. Thepeople of Chulilla recount how, indays gone by, this was an obligatorypoint of passage for lumberjacksbringing felled tree trunks downfrom Moya and the mountains ofCastile to Valencia. The trail continuesalong the edge of the canyon untilLa Pedriza and terminates by theLoriguilla reservoir.

It then runs straightfor the foot of Mount Frailecico atthe mouth of the Turia Canyon andheads up to Trascastillo, passingabove the backwaters of Las Mulasand Las Canales before reachingthe Cueva del Gollisno. This cavewas once used by shepherds to pentheir sheep overnight. Slightly higheris the Cueva del Tesoro, which ison several levels and you have topractically squat to enter.

Past the spring, it risesto the top of La Muela, a peak withseveral viewing platforms, includingthe Mirador de la Cruz lookout. Onthe way back, the trail drops downthe Mortaina gulley and then passesthrough the La Ermita quarter.

This trail runs through the town andup to the castle, where it then dropsdown to Los Huertos and joins the

PR 76 and PR 77 hiking trails.Along the way it traces part of thecourse of the river Turia, whichwaters all the low-lying meadowson the fertile plain. A turn-off tothe right leads to Sot de Chera,climbing up the Falfiguera gulleyand away from the town, whichdrops out of sight behind. Remnantsof cave paintings can be foundapproximately 1.5 kilometres fromthe start of the gulley. Backtrackingdown the gulley, the trail then makesit way up El Barranquillo, from whereone returns to the Plaza of theBaronia.

7/ THE PR 76 CHULILLA-GESTALGAR..................................................Length: 12 kilometres Difficulty: easyTime: 3 hours

This hiking track leads down to theriver past the ruins of the old washhouse and along a farm track. Itkeeps ascending until it crosses theFalfiguera gulley, running betweenbeautiful willow trees, black poplarsand elms. It then picks up the ElPlano farm track, crosses El Corralde los Rojos and skirts the oldlimestone quarries. After Fuente de

la Rinconá, the trail reaches itshighest point and then descendsalmost right down to the river onthe other side of the Fuencalientespa, famed for its mineral andmedicinal thermal springs. The trailfollows the course of the Turia alongto the confluence with the river Soton the right bank, very near ElCorindón, the old emery stone factorywhich was destroyed in the floodsof 1957. To the right are the remainsof a Roman aqueduct and to theleft are unusual rock formationsknown locally as Picarchos. Pastthe Presa de Molina reservoir, thetrail crosses the deep and shadyBarranco Hondo ravine and thenenters a spectacular gorge carvedout of the rock by the river Turia.From here it heads to La Peña María,tracing the line of the river andskirting a few orchards and gardensbefore entering the town of Gestalgar.

This trail crosses the Los Huertosbridge and follows the Vereda deCastilla path, running alongside theriver as it drops down towards theFalfiguera gulley. The trail thensplits in two, with one fork leadingto Sot de Chera and the other tothe Loriguilla reservoir. The Sot deChera trail crosses the gulley andthen ascends to a lookout made ofrock before continuing on to theCerro Negro spring. From the postopposite the spring, the trail descendssharply down the other side of themountain towards Sot de Chera.The Loriguilla reservoir trail, on the

other hand, continues past the Sotde Chera turn-off and then bendsto the right, running parallel to thegulley for around 400 metres. Atthe Rambla de Cubillas, the trailfollows a track and then crosses theold road between Loriguilla and Sotde Chera, heading to the right untilit reaches another crossroads whereit begins its descent towards theLoriguilla reservoir.

9/ THE PR 321 PELMA-LA HOYA GULLEY-FUENTE DE LA RINCONÁ-ALTODE LA BANDERA-PELMA.................................................Length: 12 kilometresDifficulty: mediumTime: 2 hours and 45 minutes

This trail departs from the Pelmarecreational area, a leafy spot 3kilometres from Chulilla, and thenleads to the Fuente Pelma springon Mount Pelma before continuingthrough Las Clochas de Targa alongthe road which runs to the spa. Atthe Fuente de la Rinconá spring,the trail picks up the PR 76 walkingtrail until the turn-off for the PR-250, where it branches off to theleft and begins the ascent to Altode la Bandera via Los Picarchos,leaving Chulilla spa behind. At thetop are the ruins of the Corral deJavier and the trail then heads tothe Alto la Bandera lookout beforedescending via El Losar.

El castillo es el embrión de Chulilla yen él que se desarrolló la fortalezaislámica y más tarde la Baronía

El castillo es el embrión de Chulilla, porque fuela base sobre la que se desarrolló primero lafortaleza islámica y más tarde, ya bajo ladominación cristiana, la Baronía. Cuenta laleyenda que entre estos dos periodos, en épocade Abú Zahid, una princesa mora se lanzó alvacío desde lo más alto del castillo cuando supadre le prohibió casarse con su amado, unnoble cristiano. En su desesperación, el jovenfue tras ella. Esa ventana, testigo mudo delsuicido de los amantes, todavía se conservaintacta. Leyendas aparte, la fortaleza trepa hacia la cimade la montaña. El portón de entrada es de mediopunto de ladrillo en el exterior y arco apuntandode sillería en el interior y con puerta de madera.Sobre el dintel hay un matacán almenado parala defensa.

Traspasada la entrada, hay dos alineacionesde muros, probablemente islámicos, y junto a

la montaña las dependencias del cuerpo deguardia. También hay restos de dependenciascon pavimento de ladrillo cerámico y unahabitación abovedada en el primer saliente dela muralla.

Históricamente, el rey moro de Valencia, AbúZahid, cedió Chulilla en 1236 al obispo deSegorbe. Poco después, en 1248, Jaume I donaa Pere Escrivá de Narbona castrum et villam deXuleia. En 1274 la Baronía pasa a manos delCabildo y al Obispo de Valencia. Esta soberaníase hace completa por parte del Obispo en 1373al asumir los derechos del cabildo.

Tras la conquista y las guerras con Castilladel siglo XIV sufre reformas importantes. En elsiglo XIX, el castillo de Chulilla es un fuerte deobediencia carlista, siendo asedio del ejércitogubernamental en 1839, cuando se abandonadefinitivamente.

Legends aside, the castle perches at the topof the mountain, its entrance a brick-built semi-circular archway on the outside and a stone-built pointed arch on the inside, with a woodendoor. Above the lintel is a crenellated machicolationfor defending the entrance.

Inside are two rows of walls, probably datingfrom Moorish times, and you can see theguardroom quarters set against the mountainside.There are also remnants of rooms with ceramicbrick flooring and a bedroom with a vaultedceiling on the first projection of the wall.

Historically, the Moorish king of Valencia,Abu Zahid, ceded Chulilla to the bishop ofSegorbe in 1236. Shortly afterwards, in 1248,Jaume I granted the castrum et villam de Xuleiato Pere Escrivá of Narbonne. In 1274, thebarony passed from the town council into thehands of the bishop of Valencia – sovereigntywhich was cemented almost extacly 100 yearslater, when the bishop assumed the rights ofthe town council in 1373.

The castle underwent major reforms followingthe conquest and the wars with Castile in the14th. In the 19th century, Chulilla Castle was aCarlist stronghold and was besieged by governmentforces in 1839, after which it was definitivelyabandoned.

Uno de los méritos del restauranteLa Rueda es conservar lo mejor dela cocina tradicional de Chulilla peroofrecerla en versión siglo XXI. Elmérito es, ni más ni menos, que desu jefa de cocina, Gelen Umbert, lapersona que ha sido capaz de exaltarsabores ancestrales conservados enla memoria y elaborarlos a partir deproductos de temporada, de excep-cional calidad y con avanzados méto-dos. Junto a Gelen, Antonio Calduches la otra parte del tándem, la personaque atiende la sala, quien ofrece lomejor de su cocina y el que consiguela satisfacción final del cliente.

Varias entradas, susceptibles decompartir, son especialidad de lacasa como es el caso del ajo arriero,el foie con higos, los crujientes demorcillas o las sobrasadicas conpimientos de padrón, exquisitecesque no dejan atrás platos más con-tundentes como las alubias rojas conperdiz, la olla de berzas o el gazpachomanchego. Pero sin lugar a dudas,hay que reconocer que platos comoel conejo con caracoles, las manitasde cerdo y el rabo de toro con setasconsiguen alcanzar la calificaciónde excelencia gastronómica. Un con-sejo: acabar con alguno de los postreselaborados por Gelen, como el tiramisú,la tarta de quesillo o el cremoso dechocolate blanco con frutos rojos.

La Rueda ofrece un menú, delunes a viernes, al precio de 12euros, compuesto por dos platos ypostre y con la bebida incluida. Unacomida a la carta ronda los 27 euroscon la bebida. Cierra los lunes porla noche y los martes.

But it isLa Rueda’s rabbit with snails, itspigs trotters and its oxtail with wildmushrooms which have earned therestaurant its reputation for culinaryexcellence. Nor should any dinerleave without trying one of Gelen’sdelicious desserts, such as thetiramisu, the cheesecake or the whitechocolate cream with fruits of theforest.

La Rueda offers a 12-euro setmenu from Monday to Friday, whichcomprises two courses plus dessertand a drink. An à la carte lunch plusdrink will cost around 27 euros. Therestaurant is closed on Monday nightand all day Tuesday.

INGREDIENTES PARA CUATRO PERSONAS:

1 kg. de rabo de toro1 copa de vino tinto1 cucharada de vinagre de Módena100 grs. setas frescas y deshidratadas3 cebollas1 cabeza de ajos1 laurel25 grs.de lágrimas de chocolate puro o una porción

ELABORACIÓN:

Salpimentar el rabo de toro, pasarlo por harina y sofreírlo. Pasar el toro auna olla, reservando el aceite. Poner a cocer el rabo con el vino, el vinagrey las setas, cubriéndolo de agua y dejar hervir unas tres horas a fuegolento hasta que esté tierno. En el mismo aceite, sofreír la cebolla, losajos, el laurel y caramelizarla con las lágrimas de chocolate. Añadir estesofrito a la olla donde se ha cocinado el rabo y cocerlo diez minutos más.

INGREDIENTS (SERVES 4):

1 kg oxtail1 glass of red wine1 tbsp balsamic vinegar100 g. fresh and dried mushrooms3 onions1 head of garlic1 bay leaf25 g. dark chocolate drops or squares

PREPARATION:

Season the oxtail, roll it in flour and then sauté. Remove the oxtail,reserving the oil, and place it in a pot. Cook the oxtail with the wine,balsamic vinegar and mushrooms and then cover with water and simmerfor around 3 hours until tender. Sauté the onion, the garlic and the bayleaf in the oil from the oxtail, caramelising it with the chocolate drops,then add to the oxtail pot and cook for another 10 minutes.

Escultor y poetaMarcelo Díaz (1950) nació en Toledo, pero se trasladó juntoa su familia a Vila-real, la que considera su ciudad. Antiguoprofesor de dibujo y educación plástica y visual de enseñanzasecundaria durante un largo periodo, decidió emprenderuna nueva aventura y marcharse a Serbia. Consideradocomo uno de los más destacados artífices de la madera dela Comunitat Valenciana tiene obras en diversas ciudadesdestacando la Fuente de los Amantes en Vila-real, una obraexpuesta en el Registro de la Propiedad y Mercantil enValencia, en el paseo Ribalta de Castellón de la Plana o enSegorbe y Borriol. Además, ha realizado infinidad deexposiciones individuales y colectivas en ciudades comoValencia, Barcelona, Madrid, París, Nueva York y Belgrado.Para este escultor castellonense el arte está más allá deretratar la realidad visual, todo está en su interior, y susformas son el resultado de una depuración de sus vivencias,de su biografía, de las realidades de su entorno de ahí queno sea casualidad que Marcelo Díaz sea también poetaporque la imagen gráfica de sus ideas toma cuerpo en laspalabras.

Sculptor and poetMarcelo Díaz (1950) was born in Toledo but raised in Vila-real, which he regards as his hometown. Having retiredfrom a lengthy career teaching drawing and the visual andplastic arts at secondary school, Marcelo yearned foradventure and so upped sticks and moved to Serbia. He isnow one of the leading wood sculptors in the Region ofValencia and his work can be found in various towns andcities: most notably Fuente de los Amantes (“Lovers’Fountain”) in Vila-real, with other pieces on display at theLand and Business Registration Office in Valencia, on PaseoRibalta in Castellón de la Plana and in Segorbe and Borriol.He has also staged countless solo and collective exhibitionsin the likes of Valencia, Barcelona, Madrid, Paris, New Yorkand Belgrade. For this sculptor from the province of Castellón,art goes beyond the mere portrayal of visual reality and isinstead about what is on the inside. His creations are adistillation of his experiences, his life and the realities allaround him. It is little wonder, then, that Marcelo Díaz isalso a great poet, sculpting images from words.


¿Cree que un artista nace o se hace? Yo creo que hay que nacer con algo, pero indu-dablemente hay que hacerse mucho. No sólotrabajando, sino creyendo.

¿Qué es el arte para usted?Es mi forma de encontrarme y mi forma deexpresarme.

¿Cuándo trabaja con qué material se siente mása gusto?Indudablemente con las maderas porque reflejanla propiedad del leño, las vetas, texturas, color,dirección, los años o el peso. Lo que trato deponer en práctica es que cada madera tieneunas cualidades diferentes.

¿Cuál es su método de trabajo?Parto de un sentimiento y de una sensaciónpoética siempre, ya que creo que están muyrelacionados. Hago muchos bocetos y repito envarias ocasiones la maqueta a pequeña escalaporque la madera es un material muy delicado.

¿Hay algún tema que prefiera sobre otros?Yo creo que como le ocurre a muchos artistashay una especie de obsesión. En mi caso meinteresa mucho el mundo de las dos partes, dela pareja. Muchas de mis obras en su idea deconjunto están formadas por dos partes.

¿Se puede hablar de una inspiración mediterránea? El que en estos momentos de mi vida viva enSerbia me ha hecho cuestionarme lo mediterráneoque soy y me he dado cuenta principalmentede que la dulzura, lo sensorial, la luz mediterráneava muy unida a mi obra.

¿Inspiración o trabajo diario?Las dos cosas, pero la inspiración tiene que serlírica, hay que creer en ella. En mi caso procedede lo que siento y creo con más profundidad.

¿Cómo plantea una obra?Normalmente tengo varios temas de trabajo yen torno a ellos voy profundizando y dandovariedad.

¿Cómo ha influido la Comunitat Valenciana ensu vida y en su obra?Mucho. Principalmente me ha influenciadomucho el clima mediterráneo, pero también lafacilidad de conseguir el material con el quetrabajo como por ejemplo obtener maderas varia-das.

¿Un artista debe ser libre?Siempre, cualquier artista debe de ser librepero a la vez tiene que ser sincero. Y paramostrar su libertad ha de mostrar su desobedienciaa las rutinas.

¿Cómo ve el panorama artístico en la ComunitatValenciana? ¿Y a los nuevos creadores?Muy bien. Hay mucho movimiento. Creo queestá ocurriendo un fenómeno general en todoel arte, en el que están conviviendo todas lastendencias. Hay muy buen panorama en laComunitat Valenciana tanto por lo que se hacepor parte de las instituciones como en las galeríasprivadas.

¿Qué siente cuando alguien critica alguna desus obras?Si me lo argumenta y lo dice con sinceridad leescucho con todo respeto.

¿En que lugar de la Comunitat se retiraría avivir y a pintar?Preferentemente en Peñíscola porque es unaciudad ideal que descubrí en mi época adolescentey me parece muy singular y especial. Aunquehay muchos otros sitios bonitos en la ComunitatValenciana.

Is an artist born or trained? I believe you’ve got to be born with something,but you’ve definitely got to train a lot. Not onlyworking but also believing.

What is art for you?It’s my way of finding and expressing myself.

When you’re working, what material do you feelhappiest with?Definitely with wood, as the different woodsreflect their individual ligneous quality: grain,texture, colour, direction, age and weight. Ilook to bring out the different qualities of eachpiece of wood.What is your method of working?I invariably start off from a sentiment and froma poetic feeling, as I believe they are closelylinked. I make a lot of sketches and I oftenmake several small-scale models, as wood is avery delicate material.

Do you have any favourite themes?I believe that, as with many artists, there’s akind of obsession. Personally I’m really interestedin the world of two parts; in pairs and couples.In many of my works, the overall idea is expressedin two halves.

Is there such a thing as Mediterranean inspiration? Living in Serbia has made me question howMediterranean I am, and I’ve mainly realisedthat tenderness, sensorial qualities and theMediterranean light are tightly bound up in mywork.

Inspiration or daily graft?Both, but inspiration must be lyrical and you’vegot to believe in it. Personally, I start from whatI feel and believe most deeply.

How do you get the idea for a piece?I have several working themes to which I con-tinuously add more variety and depth.

How has the Region of Valencia influenced yourlife and your work?Greatly. It’s mainly the Mediterranean climatewhich has influenced me a lot but also the easewith which I can obtain the material I workwith – getting a variety of wood, for example.

Must an artist be free?Always. Any artist must be free but they mustalso be sincere. And to prove their freedomthey must break away from the routine.

What do you think of the art scene in the Regionof Valencia? And of the new creators?They’re great. There’s a lot of movement. I thinkthere’s a general art-wide phenomenon in whichall the various trends are coming together.There’s a very good scene in the Region ofValencia, for what’s happening in both theofficial entities and the private galleries.

How do you feel when someone criticises oneof your pieces?If they give me reasons and are sincere, I listenwith complete respect.

Where in the Region of Valencia would youretire to, to live and create?Preferably Peñíscola, because it’s an ideal cityI discovered during my adolescence and it seemsvery unusual and special. But there are manyother lovely places in the Region of Valencia.

En 1980, Andrés Valiente decide,tras toda una vida dedicada al cultivode cereales, almendros, olivos y vid,reconvertir las plantaciones en viñedos.Así se inició, en Bodegas Vegalfaro,la elaboración de vinos a partir deviñedos propios, aunando suelo,variedad de uva y microclima bajolos conceptos de vinos de pago, losde una sola variedad y pago, y losvinos de finca que son el ensamblajede diferentes variedades.

El marco de plantación de todoel viñedo es en espaldera y la altitudmedia es de 600 metros sobre elnivel del mar. La bodega utilizasensores de humedad para vigilarla temperatura del suelo, controlandoasí su aporte hídrico óptimo en casode sequía. Además, no se utilizanherbicidas, sólo abonos orgánicosy vegetales.

La vendimia es manual y serealiza en las primeras horas de lamañana en la parcela llamadaPasamonte en la Finca la Muela,rodeada de pinar y plantas aromá-ticas. El proceso de vinificaciónsigue un estricto control de calidad,gestionándose todos los residuospara evitar vertidos al medio natural.

La elaboración comienza conuna premaceración en frío, descubey desfangado, fermentación alcohólicalenta del sauvignon blanc, pasandola garnacha blanca un periodo detres meses en barrica de roblefrancés y utilizando la técnica delbattonage sin filtrar.

In 1980, following a lifetime devotedto growing cereal crops, almonds,olives and vines, Andrés Valientedecided to turn his land into a vineyard,giving birth to the Bodegas Vegalfarowinery. Taking account of soil types,grape varieties and microclimate,Bodegas Vegalfaro uses its own grapesto produce two different types ofwine: Vinos de Pago, made from asingle variety grown on a single plot,and Vinos de Finca, a blend of varietiesfrom throughout the estate.

The vines are grown on espaliersat an average altitude of 600 metresabove sea level and the winery useshumidity sensors to monitor soiltemperature and thus ensure optimalirrigation in the event of drought.Herbicides are eschewed in favourof organic fertilisers and the grapesare harvested by hand in the earlyhours of the morning from the parcelknown as Pasamonte on the Fincala Muela estate, which is surroundedby pine forests and aromatic plants.

The wine production process isconducted under strict quality controlsand all waste is carefully managedto prevent environmental spillage.Wine production starts with pre-fermentation cold maceration followedby drawing and decanting. TheSauvignon Blanc is then slowlyfermented and the Grenache Blancis aged for three months in barrelsof French oak using the battonagetechnique without filtration.

La Conselleria de Medio Ambienteha iniciado la construcción de uncarril destinado a peatones y ciclistas.La vía, de dos kilómetros de longitudy dos metros y medio de ancho, seconstruye en una zona colindantecon el propio Parc Natural del’Albufera. Este carril entre las loca-lidades de Sollana y El Romaní,se va a convertir en una alternativaal vehículo privado y supone unaapuesta por la movilidad sostenibleen un entorno medioambiental degran valor ecológico como es elParc Natural de l’Albufera.

El nuevo trazado del carril coincidecon la plataforma de la antiguacarretera nacional N-332, actual-mente comarcal CV-4008, de titu-laridad municipal. Para ello, estáprevista la disminución del anchode los carriles y arcenes de la carre-tera, con el fin de poder encajarpor el margen oeste el nuevo vialno motorizado.

Esta nueva infraestructura eco-lógica coincide con las celebracionesque se están llevando a cabo pararememorar el 25 aniversario de ladeclaración del Parc Natural del’Albufera por parte de la Generalitat,así como con la conmemoracióndel centenario de la adquisiciónde la Albufera y el monte de laDehesa por el Ayuntamiento deValencia. Para celebrar estas efe-mérides, la Generalitat y el consistoriovalenciano han organizado un con-junto de actividades que se des-arrollarán a lo largo de todo el año.

The regional Department for theEnvironment has initiated theconstruction of a new lane forcyclists and walkers between Sollanaand El Romaní. Two kilometreslong and 2.5 metres wide, the newpath runs alongside the Albuferanature park and will provide analternative to private motor vehiclesin a bid to encourage eco-friendlytransportation within this ecologicallyprized area.

The new path will run along thewestern edge of the old N-332,which is now the municipally ownedCV-4008 district highway, with thelanes and hard shoulder of the roadbeing made narrower toaccommodate the non-motorisedtraffic.

Construction of this newenvironmentally friendly infrastructurecoincides with the 25th anniversaryof the declaration of l’Albufera asa nature park officially recognisedby the Generalitat (Valencian regionalgovernment) and with the centenaryof Valencia City Council’s acquisitionof l’Albufera and La Dehesa. La Generalitat ha declarado ParajeNatural Municipal el enclave delCastillo de Arenós en en Pueblade Arenoso. El paraje, de algo másde 32 hectáreas de superficie,está definido por un pequeño cerrode 770 metros de altitud que selevanta junto al embalse de Arenósen el tramo alto del río Mijares.Este espacio forma parte del cursoalto del río Mijares y actúa comocorredor biológico entre la ibéricaturolense y las montañas del interiorde Castellón.

Desde el punto de vista de lavegetación, el ámbito del parajese caracteriza por ser un espacioforestal con densas masas de pinushalepensis con alto grado demadurez y de protección del suelo.La solana posee formaciones arbus-tivas típicamente mediterráneascomo la sabina mora y el enebrode miera.

Entre los mamíferos, son habi-tuales las cabras montesas, lasgarduñas y los tejones. En cuantoa la avifauna, el paraje es utilizadocomo territorio de campeo y cazapor rapaces como el águila perdicera,el águila real, el águila culebrera,el águila calzada, el halcón peregrinoy el búho real.

El paisaje es uno de los princi-pales valores que atesora esteParaje. Desde la parte más altadel cerro se disfruta de unas pano-rámicas con una calidad escénicade gran belleza, con el pantanode Arenós de fondo.

The regional ministry has officiallydeclared the area of Castillo deArenós in Puebla de Arenoso aMunicipal Nature Reserve. Coveringa little over 32 hectares, the newreserve centres upon a small hill770 metres high which overlooksthe Arenós reservoir along theupper reaches of the river Mijares– a stretch of river which acts asa natural corridor between theTeruel area of Spain and themountains of inland Castellón.

In terms of vegetation, thereserve classifies as a forestry areawith dense, well established forestsof Aleppo pine offering a high levelof soil protection. In the clearingsbetween the trees are typicallyMediterranean shrubs such asPhoenician juniper and pricklycedar.

The most commonly foundmammals here are mountain goats,martens and badgers, and the areais a home and hunting ground toseveral birds of prey includingBonelli’s eagles, golden eagles,short-toed snake eagles, bootedeagles, peregrine falcons andEurasian eagle owls.

One of the reserve’s greatestvalues is its landscape, with thetop of the hill affording stunninglybeautiful views over the surroundingcountryside with the Arenós reservoiras a scenic backdrop.

NUEVO MUSEO DE HISTORIA EN MONFORTE DEL CIDNEW HISTORY MUSEUM OPENS IN MONFORTE DEL CID

Un toro íbero de más de trescientoskilogramos es la pieza central delnuevo Museo de Historia de Monfortedel Cid. El edificio, una antiguacasa señorial restaurada de tresplantas, alberga las exposiciones elPaso del tiempo, Íberos y Roma.

En la muestra del Paso del Tiempo,un audiovisual acerca al visitante ala historia más reciente de la villa,el origen de sus fiestas y tradicionesy su producción agrícola.

El área destinada a la culturaíbera se comparte con las culturasprehistóricas, que servirán comoguía introductoria a la evoluciónque ha seguido la villa en sus primerosaños. Las piezas más importantesdel museo se encuentran en estazona. An Iberian bull weighing over 300kilos is the centrepiece of the newHistory Museum in Monforte delCid. Housed in a recently renovatedthree-storey mansion, the museumis currently running three exhibitions:the Passage of Time, Iberians andRome.

In the Passage of Time exhibit,an audiovisual reveals the recenthistory of the town and the originsof its festivals and traditions, andtakes a look at its agricultural output.

The exhibition on Iberian culture,meanwhile, explores prehistoriccultures as an introduction to howthe town evolved in its early days.The museum’s star pieces are inthis section and include the torsoof a warrior flecked with remnantsof polychrome, the great Iberianhand, the mitred bull, the feet ofan Iberian statue of a man and awoman and, of course, the Iberianbull of Monforte del Cid, a piecewhich dates from the late 4th centuryBC and whose impressive conditionmakes it the most valuable piecein the whole museum.

In the Rome section, visitors canlearn about life in the pars urbanaand the pars rustica, with an interactivetable highlighting the importanceof Monforte as a stopover city onsome of the major Roman roads.

El fin de semana del 12 y el 13de noviembre concluye la temporadade puertas abiertas y visitas guiadasa las cuevas de La Sarga, un san-tuario prehistórico formados portres abrigos rupestres que nuncase utilizaron como vivienda, peroque en sus paredes han quedadotestimonio de las creencias y acti-vidades de los hombres y mujeresque poblaron la zona hace másde cinco mil años. Las visitas songuiadas y tienen lugar entre lasonce de la mañana y las dos de latarde.

Las pinturas de La Sarga fuerondescubiertas en el año 1951 y en1997 se inscribieron en el catálogode Bienes de Interés Cultural.Finalmente, un año más tarde en1998, la UNESCO las declaróPatrimonio de la Humanidad.

La Sarga esta situada entre laslocalidades alicantinas de Jijonay Alcoy y sus pinturas correspondenal Neolítico y a la Edad de losMetales. En ellas se pueden con-templar las figuras de antiguoscazadores, animales y otras figurasgeométricas que fueron realizadashace entre siete y cinco mil años.

La Sarga alberga pinturas detres estilos artísticos: el macroes-quemático, el esquemático y ellevantino. Los autores de las pinturasde Arte Levantino fueron cazadoresy recolectores que convivieron conlos primeros agricultores y ganaderosdurante los inicios del Neolítico.

The season of public access tothe caves at La Sarga is set todraw to a close on the weekendof the 12th and 13th November.The three prehistoric shelters werenever used as a dwelling as suchbut were nevertheless adornedwith testaments to the beliefs andactivities of the men and womenwho lived in the area over 5,000years ago. Members of the publiccan currently visit the caves onguided tours between 11 a.m. and2 p.m.

The rock paintings at La Sargawere discovered in 1951 and weredeclared Sites of Cultural Interestin 1997 before being inscribedon the UNESCO World HeritageList in 1998.

La Sarga lies between Jijonaand Alcoy in the province of Alicanteand its rock paintings date fromthe Neolithic and the Metal Age.Created between 7,000 and 5,000years ago, they show the figuresof ancient hunters, animals andother geometrical shapes.

The La Sarga paintings can bedivided into three artistic styles:Macroschematic, Schematic andLevantine. The authors of theLevantine paintings were huntergatherers who lived alongside theearly farmers and herders at thedawn of the Neolithic Age.

PINTURAS RUPESTRES DE LA SARGA ROCK PAINTINGS IN LA SARGA

La Ciudad de las Artes y las Cienciasserá el escenario de la segundaedición del Valencia Open 500 del29 de octubre al domingo 6 denoviembre. El edificio Ágora albergarála pista central de la competicióny en los aledaños del Ágora se esta-blecerá la Pista 1, ambas rápidas.El resto de la Ciudad de las Artesy las Ciencias acogerá los escenariosde esta competición incluyendo elFUNPARK, una zona comercial, deocio y de restauración, cuya entradaserá gratuita.

El torneo tendrá doce sesiones,tres de las cuales serán nocturnas.El jueves y el viernes las jornadasnocturnas comenzarán a las ochode la tarde y se disputarán dos par-tidos, uno individual y otro de dobles.El sábado la jornada nocturna comen-zará a las seis de la tarde y se dis-putarán un partido individual, unode dobles y otro de silla de ruedas.

El sábado 29 y el domingo 30se disputará la fase previa del torneo.El cuadro final de la competicióncomenzará también el domingo 30a las doce horas. El lunes será elprimer día en el que todos los partidosque se jugarán corresponderán a lafase final. El viernes 4 de noviembrese jugarán los cuartos de final, elsábado las semifinales y el domingollegará el turno de las finales.

The City of Arts and Sciences isall set to host the second outingof the Valencia Open 500 from the29th October to the 6th November.Centre court will be in the Ágorabuilding, with Number 1 court justoutside. Both of these are fastcourts. The other courts will belocated at various sites around theCity of Arts of Sciences, includingthe FUNPARK, an area of shops,entertainment and eateries whichis free to enter.

The tournament will consist of12 sessions, 3 of which will beevening sessions. On Thursday 3rd

November and Friday 4th the twomatches in the evening session –one singles, the other doubles –will begin at 8 p.m., with Saturday’sevening session beginning at 6 p.m.and involving a singles match, adoubles match and a wheelchairmatch.

The preliminary rounds will beheld on Saturday 29th and Sunday30th, with the first round of thecompetition also scheduled to starton the Sunday, at midday. Mondayis therefore the first day of thetournament proper. The quarter-finals will be played on Friday 4th,the semi-finals on Saturday 5th andthe final matches on Sunday 6th.
