1 JOSEPH CROFTS was born in Cork City in 1928. He died on 1 January 2005 at Dalgan Park

after a long illness. Educated by the Christian Brothers and at St. Finbarr’s, Farranferris, Cork, Joe went to Dalgan in 1948 and was ordained there in 1954. His first mission assignment was Korea where his talent for befriending people was a feature that marked his twenty-five years

in that country. His last role in Korea was Regional Bursar in Seoul and when he was assigned to Britain in 1979 he filled a similar role in Solihull where he served as Office Manager. Likewise, when he was assigned to Ireland in 1992 he assumed an office role, at Navan, always a genial and obliging Columban. Joe is buried at Dalgan.

1 JOHN DUNNE was born in 1927 at Coolnacritta, Co. Laois. He died in Dalgan on 1 January

1997. He did his secondary studies at St. Kieran’s College, Kilkenny [1940-45] before coming to Dalgan in 1945 where he was ordained priest on 21 December 1951. Assigned to Korea, he spent about twenty years in the Mokpo and Cheju areas. Johnny was appointed [1973] to vocation work in Ireland and then to bursar in Dalgan from 1977-84. After that he did pastoral

work in the diocese of Waterford, and for a much longer period in his own diocese of Ossory until 1996. Johnny is buried at Dalgan.

1 PEADAR GARAHY Born at Lahinch, Co. Clare, in 1916. He died at West Chester, PA, on 1

January 1960. Having studied at St. Mary’s College, Galway [1930-34], he entered Dalgan where he was ordained priest in 1940. During the war years [1941-45] he served as a curate in the diocese of Galway. In 1948 he wasassigned to the U.S. where he was engaged in promotion work from Bristol, St. Paul and Omaha until he was appointed Superior at St. Columban’s, West

Chester, PA, in 1956. Peadar is buried at Malden, MA.

1 MICHAEL MORAN was born at Glencorrib, Shrule, Co. Mayo, in 1901. He died at his own

home on New Year’s Day 1954. Michael studied at Christian Brothers School, Ballinrobe, and St. Jarlath’s College, Tuam, before coming to St. Senan’s College, Cahiracon, in 1921. He was ordained priest at Dalgan in 1926. Assigned to China, he spent most of his missionary life in Nancheng. A steady flow of FAR EAST articles came from him in his mission in Nancheng. He

left China in 1951 when the Communists took over. On his return to Ireland he took up a pastoral assignment in the diocese of Galway and was an assistant at Craughwellat the time of his death. Michael is buried at Dalgan.

1 THOMAS P. O’ROURKE was born in the parish of Upperchurch, Co. Tipperary, in 1901. He

died of a brain tumour on 1 Jan 1988 at Silver Creek, NY. T.P. received his secondary education at Mt. Melleray, Co. Waterford [1916-19], and then went to Dalgan in August 1919. He was ordained priest on 22 December 1924. He went to Hanyang in 1925 and, apart from one break in Ireland [1935-36], he worked there until 1947. After leave in Ireland he was assigned to the

U.S. in 1948. T.P. did promotion work in St. Paul, San Diego and Denver [1948-77]. He was Superior at St. Columban’s, Denver, in 1975. He retired to St. Columban’s, Bristol, RI, in 1977. T.P. is buried at Silver Creek.

1 GERARD SMITH Born in 1913 at Ballintemple, Co. Cavan, died in Dalgan on 1 January 1997.

He did his secondary education at St. Patrick’s College, Cavan [1928-34], before coming to Dalgan in 1934, he was ordained priest on 21 December 1940. Due to World War II, Gerry worked in the diocese of Clifton, England, until 1948 when he was appointed to promotion

work in the U.S. Region. He studied film making and TV techniques and then went to Peru, Chile and Argentina to make mission movies, followed by further movie-making in Ireland and Latin America. In 1968 he was appointed to Peru and then [1975] to the U.S. Region where he did parish work. He retired to Ireland in 1990, and to Dalgan where he is buried.

2 JAMES DONOHUE Born in Bofeenaun, Ballina, Co. Mayo, in 1916, died in Japan on 2 January

1985 as a result of an assault by a mentally deranged man. Jim was educated at St. Muredach’s College, Ballina, before coming to Dalgan in 1935. He was ordained priest at Dalgan in 1941. World War II made overseas travel impossible so he accepted a temporary appointment to the diocese of Menevia in Wales. When the war ended he was assigned to China where he

remained until 1950 when the Communist take-over resulted in the expulsion of the missionaries. Assigned to Japan, he was to spend the next 33 years of his life until his untimely death. Jim is buried at Fuchu, near Tokyo.

2 JAMES DONOHUE nació en Bofeenaun, Ballina, Co. Mayo, en 1916. Murió en Japón el 2 de enero de 1985 como resultado del ataque de un hombre con transtornos mentales. 2 PETER NILAND was born in Mountbellew, Co. Galway, in 1920. He died in the Mater

Hospital, Dublin, on 2 January 1985. Peter was educated in St. Jarlath’s College, Tuam, before coming to Dalgan where he was ordained priest in 1946. After his ordination he was assigned to China and was studying Chinese in Peking [Beijing] when the Communist take-over (of

mainland China) became imminent. In 1948 he was assigned to Japan and for the next 26 years he worked in various Columban parishes in the dioceses of Tokyo, Osaka and Yokohama. In 1974 he was assigned to the Irish Region because of ill health. Peter is buried at Dalgan.

3 MICHAEL BALFE Born in Lobinstown, Co. Meath, in 1924, died in Drogheda on 3 January

1973. Michael received his education at De La Salle School, Ardee, and St. Finian’s College, Mullingar. He entered Dalgan in 1942 and was ordained priest there in 1948. He was assigned to Japan and worked in the diocese of Yokohama. In 1958 he was assigned to Ireland where he became a familiar figure in Irish secondary schools as he gave talks on the missionary

priesthood and sought vocations for the Columbans. After his years on vocation work he was bursar in Dalgan [1965-69]. In failing health, he served as a curate in his native Lobinstown for a short time. Michael is buried at Dalgan.

3 MICHAEL BALFE nació en Lobinstown, Co. Meath, en 1924. Murió en Drogheda el 3 de enero de 1973. Michael recibió su educación en la Escuela De La Salle, Ardee y St. Finian's College, Mullingar. 3 ALFRED McCORMACK was born at Ballinrobe, Co. Mayo, in 1904. He died unexpectedly in

Melbourne, Australia, on 3 January 1933. Alf. was a brother of Columban Edward McCormack. His childhood was spent in Ballinrobe, Co. Mayo, where he studied at the local Christian Brothers School. He received his secondary education at St. Jarlath’s College, Tuam. He briefly studied medicine at University College, Galway, before entering St. Senan’s College, Cahiracon,

in 1921. He was ordained priest at Dalgan in 1926. In 1927 he went to Australia where he was manager of THE FAR EAST office until the time of his death. Alf is buried at Carlton Cemetery, Melbourne.

3 DAVID SHEEHAN Born at Medford, Mass, in 1926, died in Chicago on 3 January 2007 after

a long battle with cancer. At a young age his family moved to Evanston, IL., where his Primary and High School education were completed. Having attended the University of Wisconsin for two years, Dave studied at St. Columban’s, Bristol, and Milton. He was ordained priest in 1953 and assigned to Korea. There he acted as chaplain to the Columban Sisters in Mokpo and while

there he was recommended by Fr. Pat O’Connor to be the Korea correspondent for NCWC News Service. Due to indifferent health, Dave concentrated solely on pastoral work, in Illo and in Kang Jin where he built a church. In 1986, Dave was appointed English professor in the Kwangju Seminary. Later he returned to Kang Jin, his former parish, and served as chaplain to the Seton Sisters. In 1996 he published his life-story “A Columban Missioner – Forty Years in Korea.” He was diagnosed with prostate cancer in 2001 but carried on enthusiastically, boasting in 2005 that “Benedict XV1 is just my age as he begins his reign as our Holy Father. He is a brave man to take on that momentous task at his age!” Dave is buried with his family at All Saints Cemetery, Des Plaines, IL.

3 DAVID SHEEHAN nació en Medford, Massachusetts, en 1926. Murió en Chicago el 3 de enero de 2007 después de una larga batalla contra el cáncer. 3 CHARLES J. O’BRIEN was born in Chicago in 1901. He died suddenly in Seoul, Korea, on 3

January 1978. In his youth Charlie was a member of the famous Paulist Boys Choir which travelled extensively giving concerts. He worked with an investment company before going to St. Columban’s, Silver Creek, in 1924 to study for priesthood. He was ordained priest at Omaha

in 1931 and appointed to China. After studying Chinese in Shanghai, he worked as secretary to Bishop Galvin in Hanyang. In 1941 he was a chaplain to the U.S. Navy. At war’s end he returned to Hanyang [1946] but failing health forced him to return to the U.S. where he did promotion work as well as being bursar at St. Columban’s, Brooklyn, and St. Columban’s, Nebraska. He went to Kwangju, Korea, in 1958 where he was responsible for all the financial records of the archdiocese from 1958-72. Charlie is buried at Kwangju, Korea.

3 CHARLES J. O'BRIEN nació en Chicago en 1901. Murió repentinamente en Seúl, Corea, el 3 de enero de 1978. 4 PILAR TILOS was born in Hinoba-an, Negros Occ., Philippines in 1940. Baptised by a

Columban, Pilar was a member of the 1990 Lay Mission Group, the first R.P. group to be assigned to Pakistan. Hard-working and full of life and humour, Pilar died in her sleep at St. Columban’s, Lahore, on 4 January 1996 and is buried in Lahore.

4 PILAR TILOS nació en Hinoba-an, Negros Occ., Filipinas en 1940. Bautizado por un Columbano, Pilar fue miembro del Grupo de Misión Laica de 1990, el primer grupo del las Filipinas asignado a Pakistán. Trabajadora, llena de vida y humor, Pilar murió mientras dormía en St. Columban's, Lahore, el 4 de enero de 1996 y está enterrada en Lahore.

5 PETER LEONARD was born in Belcoo, Co. Fermanagh, in 1933. He died unexpectedly at

Ozamiz, Philippines, on 5 January 2003. Having attended the local primary school and St. Macartan’s, Monaghan, he came to Dalgan in 1951 where he was ordained in 1957. Appointed to the Philippines he worked in various parishes in Mindanao until his ministry took a new

direction to lay leadership and Basic Christian Communities. He directed the first Faith and Mission programme in Dalgan. Returning to Ozamiz in 1980 he taught at the new regional seminary of DOPIM until 1990 when he helped to establish and direct the Columban House of Studies in Quezon City and later initiate a programme for formators. Quiet, gentle and amicable, Peter is buried at Ozamiz.

5 PETER LEONARD nació en Belcoo, Co. Fermanagh, en 1933. Murió inesperadamente en Ozamiz, Filipinas, el 5 de enero de 2003. 5 SEAN NOLAN Born in Cork City in 1923, died on 5 January 2002 in Castlebar Hospital,

Co. Mayo after a short illness. Sean received his early education from the Christian Brothers, Cork. In 1944 he joined the Columbans and was ordained priest in December 1950. Assigned to the Philippines, Sean worked in Mindanao for almost thirty years and then returned to Ireland. His home in Cork is named “Mindanao”! From 1981 until his death he ministered in

Bunnacurry, Achill Island, Co. Mayo. Sean is buried at Dalgan.

6 JAMES GRIFFIN was born at Gort, Co. Galway, in 1916. He died at Dalgan, Navan, on 6

January 2000. When Jimmy had completed his secondary studies at St. Mary’s, Galway, in 1934 he entered Dalgan Park and was ordained priest in 1940. Wartime travel restrictions prohibited him from going overseas so he ministered in the diocese of Galway until 1948. In 1949 he was assigned to the USA where he held various teaching posts in Columban

seminaries until 1971 when he was assigned to Ireland. All his pastoral assignments in Ireland were in the archdiocese of Dublin. Jimmy is buried at Dalgan.

6 JAMES GRIFFIN nació en Gort, Co. Galway, en 1916. Murió en Dalgan, Navan, el 6 de enero de 2000. 6 JAMES McVEIGH was born in 1927 at Longbranch, NJ, U.S.A. He died on 6 January 1997 in

St. James Hospital, Dublin, from pneumonia. Having received his secondary education at St. Malachy’s College, Belfast, Jim came to Dalgan in 1946 and was ordained priest there on 21 December 1952. He went to Japan in 1953 and worked in Tokyo, Kanagawa and Kyushu. His

holiday at home in 1960 was extended due to ill health but he did return to Japan in 1962. Poor health soon forced him to retire to Dalgan and to semi-retirement. Jim is buried in Dalgan.

6 BERNARD O’NEILL was born near Ballymena, Co. Antrim, in 1908. He died of a heart attack

at Dalgan on 6 January 1986 Barney received his secondary education at St. Malachy’s College, Belfast, before coming to Dalgan in 1928. He was ordained priest in 1934 and appointed to China where he worked in Nancheng until1946. Because of World War II he had been unable to take his first home leave until then. He returned to Nancheng in 1947. In 1951 he was expelled

from China. For the next thirty years Barney worked in various positions in the Irish region, including fifteen years “on the road” on promotion work. Barney is buried at Dalgan. He was an uncle of Columbans Dick and Barney Martin.

7 THOMAS FISHER Born in Belfast in 1921, died on 7 January 1999 in Nakae Hospital,

Wakayama City, Japan, where he was being treated for an asthma attack. Having completed his

secondary education at St. Malachy’s College, Belfast, he entered Dalgan in 1939, was ordained priest on 21 December 1945 and assigned to China where he worked in Jiangxi. He served as

bursar for Bishop Cleary. Tom was one of six Columbans in China appointed to Japan in 1951. In1969 he was assigned to Britain and worked with the Legion of Mary in London. He was vice-Superior and District Bursar in Solihull before becoming first pastor in our Widnes parish. He returned to Japan in 1984 and ministered there ‘til his retirement to Yakatamachi church, Wakayama, in 1996, where he is buried.

7 THOMAS McCORMACK was born in 1910 near Sunderland, England. He died on 7 January

2000 at Roger Williams Hospital, Providence RI. In 1923 his family moved to Nokoming, Illinois, and in 1924 Tom went to Silver Creek and then to St. Columbans, NE, where he was ordained priest in 1935. In 1936 he was assigned to Hanyang but due to ill health Tom returned to the U.S. in 1940. He spent the next ten years in our San Diego house and afterwards

ministered in Westminster, CA, also in St. Paul, MN and in Denver, CO, before retiring to Bristol. Tom is buried at East Providence, RI.

8 PETER RYAN [Brother Colman] was born at Warrenpoint, Co. Down, in 1903. He died at

Dalgan on 8 January 1971. He was a salesman before coming to Dalgan in 1928. He learned building and construction, and went to Hanyang, China, in 1933. There Bishop Galvin put him in charge of an industrial school. When he was forced to leave China he was assigned to the Philippines in 1950. His most notable achievements were the construction of Ozamis

Cathedral, the Diocesan Seminary and Immaculate Conception College, both in Ozamis. Seriously ill, he returned to Ireland in November 1970. Brother Colman is buried at Dalgan.

9 EUGENE SPENCER was born at Bunkerhill, near Detroit, Michigan, in 1889. He died in a

nursing home near Silver Creek, NY, on 9 January 1984. Eugene, the first American student ordained priest in the Society, attended St. Mary’s Seminary, Cincinnati, and entered Dalgan in 1921. After ordination in 1924, he did promotion work in the U.S. until his assignment to China in 1926. He worked in Hanyang, was repatriated to the U.S. in 1943, but returned again to

Hanyang in 1946. Along with other Columbans, Eugene was expelled by the Communists in 1951. Having first worked in the Columban parish in Westminster, CA, he then took up a pastoral assignment in the diocese of Galveston before going to St. Columban’s, San Diego. For the five years prior to his death he lived at St. Columban’s, Silver Creek, where he is buried.

9 January 1970. Jim was a priest of the diocese of Cloyne when he came to Dalgan in 1920. He studied at St. Colman’s College, Fermoy, before going to St. Patrick’s College, Maynooth, in 1915 he was ordained priest. After ordination he returned to St. Colman’s College and taught Classics [15-20]. was a member of the teaching staff at St. Senan’s College, Cahiracon [20-22], and at St.

Columban’s, Nebraska [22-24]. At the 1924 Chapter he was elected to the Superior General’s Council [24-31]. He returned to student formation as Director of Probationers in St. Columban’s, Nebraska [31-33], as rector at Nebraska [33-39] and as vice-rector [39-47]. He returned to Ireland in 1949 and wrote a life of St. Columban. Jim is buried in Cobh, Co. Cork.

9 DAN BARAGRY was born on 11 May 1930 in Tipperary. An uncle and granduncle were

Redemptorists, Dan wanted to be a missionary, and joined the Columbans and was ordained on 21 December 1954. His brother, Frank, followed three years later. Dan spent 45 happy years in the Philippines, the first 35 in nine parishes in Mindanao. A rugged, mountainous place like

Anakan demanded prodigious energy with 83 small scattered communities. When Tandag was taken on Dan was one of the first to volunteer, even though it was an eight-hour drive from the Columban House in Cagayan de Oro. In 1989, as assistant director in the Columban Formation House in Cebu, he worked part-time in the Southern Islands Psychiatric Unit caring for those most neglected by society. Failing health forced him to return to Ireland in 2001. He did book-keeping in the farm office until confined to the Dalgan Nursing Home where he died on 9 January 2015. Dan was a quiet, dedicated, loyal Columban with a gentle sense of humour.

10 MICHAEL DUNICAN was born at Drumraney, Co. Westmeath, in 1907. He died at Queen

of Peace Residence, NY, on 10 January 1987. Michael was educated at St. Finian’s College, Mullingar, before coming to Dalgan in 1928. He was ordained priest in 1934. Assigned to China he worked with Bishop Cleary in Nancheng. When he could not return to China after his

vacation in Ireland in 1948 he was assigned to the U.S. After a year on promotion at Silver Creek, NY, he went in 1950 to the newly opened Columban house in Brooklyn, NY, where he remained until his appointment to West Chester, PA, in 1970. He did pastoral work in the diocese of Rockville Centre and in Queen of the Angels’ parish, Brooklyn [1978-82]. In November 1982 he went to Queen of Peace Residence in Queen’s Village where he remained until his death. Michael is buried at East Providence, RI.

10 PATRICK HENNESSY Born at Brunswick, Victoria, Australia, on 9 April 1907, died on 10

January 1989 at Nazareth House, Melbourne. Pat did his secondary studies at St. Patrick’s College, Ballarat, then came to St. Columban’s, North Essendon, in 1926. He studied at Dalgan [1927-31] and completed his studies at Corpus Christi College, Werribee, near Melbourne. He

was ordained priest at Essendon in 1933. Later that year he went to Hanyang, China, and in 1943 he was taken by the Japanese to a British camp in Shanghai and interned with Gerry O’Collins until 1945. He returned to Hanyang in 1947, then, in 1950, was appointed to Australia where he worked on mission promotion in dioceses throughout Australia and in the offices at N. Essendon and Brisbane. Pat is buried at Carlton, Melbourne.

10 BERNARD T. SMYTH Born at Emyvale, Co. Monaghan, in 1916, died at Dalgan on 10 January 2006. Barney completed his secondary education at St. Macartan’s, Monaghan, and joined the Columbans. He was ordained in 1940. Priesthood, prayer and pen – this trinity was central to his very active and fruitful life. His first assignment was as chaplain to Hope Castle

Convent, Castleblaney. In 1943 he became editor of Pagan Missions. To broaden his literary talent, he did a tour of Columban missions in 1953 followed by a course in journalism at Fordham. “Colm’s Corner” and “Pudsy Ryan’s Diry” were his contributions to the Irish Far East for many years. But Not Conquered, The Chinese Batch, Paul – Mystic and Missionary are among other works that came from Barney’s pen. He served as a CA Councillor [1970-‘76] and during the 1990s he worked in Chile. Barney is buried at Dalgan.

Dungannon Hospital on 10 January 1987 after being taken ill while hearing confessions. Dan was educated at St. Macartan’s College, Monaghan. He was ordained priest at Dalgan in 1944. After temporary work in Ireland he was assigned to Bhamo, Burma, in 1946. He worked there

until 1977 and he was then appointed to work in the Region of Ireland/Britain in 1979. He was appointed

curate in Coalisland, Co. Tyrone, where he spent the last years of his life. Dan is buried at Dalgan.

11 JAMES V. DOHERTY was born at Carndonagh, Co. Donegal, in 1944. He died at Calvary

Hospital, Galway, on 11 January 1969, a little over a year after his ordination. Jim received his secondary education at St. Eunan’s College, Letterkenny. He came to Dalgan in 1961 and was ordained priest in 1967. His mission assignment was withheld pending treatment of an ulcer. He was serving as a curate in Galway city when he entered hospital for the surgery. The

operation proved fatal. He is buried at Dalgan.

11 WILLIAM G. HENNESSY was born at Providence, RI, in 1912. He died in Kinogitan,

Misamis Oriental on 11 January 2001 having been in failing health for many months. Having studied at Silver Creek and Omaha, Bill was ordained priest at St. Columban’s Nebraska on December 1935 and then went to Rome forpostgraduate studies in Canon Law. Assigned to the

Philippines in 1939, he lived in the hills of Mindanao throughout the Japanese occupation and played a major part in the rebuilding of the Christian communities in Misamis after the country was liberated. Bill became the first Director of the newly constituted Region of the Philippines in 1952 and served in that position until 1959. He is buried at Kinogitan.

12 JOHN CRAFTON was born in St. Peter’s parish, San Francisco, in 1913. He died at Jeanne

Jugan Residence in Pawtucket, RI, on 12 January 1989. John was ordained priest in Providence, RI, in 1940 after studying at Silver Creek, Bristol and St. Columban’s, Nebraska. After parish work in St. Paul, John went to Mindanao, Philippines, in 1945. In 1948 he was assigned to the

U.S. Region. After studies at Creighton University he worked on THE FAR EAST, in regional offices and on parish apostolates until 1982. In later years he was auxiliary chaplain at the Home where he died. John is buried at East Providence, RI.

12 JAMES McGLYNN was born at Glenfinn, Co. Donegal, in 1899. He died in Our Lady’s

Hospital, Navan, on 12 January 1988. Jim studied in St. Eunan’s College, Letterkenny, and at St. Patrick’s College, Maynooth [1918-22]. He came to Dalgan in 1922 and was ordained priest in 1923. After two years as dean in Dalgan he was appointed to Australia and was on the staff of

St. Columban’s Seminary, Essendon [1927-42]. He was rector [1930-36] and vice-rector [1936-42]. In 1943 he opened our first Columban house in Lower Hutt, N.Z. In 1944 he was recalled to Australia as Regional Director. After two five-year terms as Director of Australia and New Zealand Jim served as Superior in New Zealand [1955-61] and again [1964-71]. He had charge of the newly opened house in Perth, W.A. [1962-64]. His final assignment in Australia was as chaplain to the Little Company of Mary Hospital in Sydney. He retired to Ireland in 1978 and is buried at Dalgan.

13 JOHN O’BRIEN was born at Cahirconlish, Co. Limerick, in 1933. He died in a motorcycle

accident in the Philippines on 13 January 1960. John studied at Sacred Heart College, Limerick, before coming to Dalgan in 1951. He was ordained priest in 1957 and was assigned to the Philippines where he worked in the Zambales area until his untimely death. John was buried at Olongapo City, Philippines. He was re-interred in St. Columban’s Church, Olongapo City.

13 PATRICK J. KELLY was from Woodford, Co. Galway, where he was born in 1926. He died

in the Dalgan Nursing Home on 13 January 2006. Having completed his secondary education at St. Joseph’s College, Ballinasloe, P.J. came to Dalgan where he was ordained priest in 1950. He was a member of the pioneering team to Fiji in 1952 and served there until 1969. Always a faith-filled, generous and talented person, with a reputation of unselfish availability for any

Society service, P.J. filled many roles. In 1969 he became Spiritual Director in Dalgan, then [1971] Director of the Irish Region, followed by an assignment to Perth, WA in 1977. He readily agreed in 1983 to an assignment to Pakistan after which, in 1991, he was reassigned to Ireland. A gifted musician, P.J. composed more than thirty-five traditional airs and dances. He is buried at Dalgan.

Derby, NY, on 13 January 1969. Joe received his secondary education at St. Eunan’s College, Letterkenny. He came to Dalgan in 1927 where he was ordained priest in 1933. Assigned to China, he was there less than two years when he got a tubercular knee and had his leg amputated. He returned to Ireland in 1936 to recuperate. In 1938 he was appointed to the staff

at St. Columban’s, Silver Creek, NY. Later he worked at Bristol, RI. He had travelled to Derby to assume the duties of bursar when he died suddenly. He is buried at Silver Creek, NY. He was the uncle of Joseph Ruth.

14 LOUGHLIN CAMPION died suddenly while visiting his sister at Johnstown, Kilkenny, on

14 January 2010. Born on 20 March 1930 at Johnstown, Lough, as he was commonly known, came to Dalgan in 1948 having completed his studies at St. Kieran’s College, Kilkenny. He was ordained at Dalgan in 1954 and assigned to Korea the following year. There he worked in Kwangju Diocese, specifically in Cheju, for almost thirty years. Late in 1979 he returned to

Ireland for a sabbathical during which time he worked in the diocese of Limerick. In the year 2000 he was permanently assigned to the Irish Region. Lough is buried at Dalgan.

14 EAMONN CULLEN was born in 1928 at Slieveboy, Castlepollard, Co. Westmeath. He died

on 14 January 1997 in Navan Hospital having suffered a stroke. Having completed his secondary education [1943-48] in St. Finian’s College, Mullingar, Ned entered Dalgan and was ordained priest there on 21 December 1954. Assigned to the Philippines, he ministered in the

Manila area. He did a brief stint [1964-66] on promotion in the U.S. From 1966 he did parish and promotion work in Britain and Ireland. He was appointed to Chile in 1978 but poor health due to diabetes led to his retirement in 1995 to Dalgan. Ned is buried at Dalgan.

14 LYNN WHITELY was born at Fremantle, West Australia, in 1941. He died of hepatitis in a

Santiago hospital in Chile on 14 January 1971, aged 30. Lynn studied at Christian Brothers

School, Perth, W.A., and at St. Charles’ Seminary, Guildford, W.A., before joining the Columbans. He was ordained priest in 1964 and assigned to Peru. In 1967 he was assigned to Chile. Lynn is

buried at San Bernardo Cemetery, Santiago.

15 EDWARD McCOLGAN was born at Iskaheen, Muff, Co. Donegal, in 1928. He died on 15

January 2008 in Letterkenny General Hospital, after a brief illness. Ordained on 21 December 1952 he was appointed to the US where he taught in Silver Creek. He went to Fiji in 1958 and spent the next forty years there. In an interview with his local paper in 2002, Eddie said “I’m

completely happy. If I was seventeen again I might do a few things differently to what I did but I would do the same things over again. I have no regrets whatsoever. I find life completely fulfilling.” His early years in Fiji were spent teaching and he served as principal of Xavier College and Corpus Christi Teachers Training College. But most of his time in Fiji was spent in a pastoral role. He spent four years [1986-ʻ90] on the staff of the Australian “Far East”. Eddie retired to Ireland in 2003 and enjoyed regaling his folk in Iskaheen and Muff with his Fijian experiences and exploits. He is buried at Dalgan.

15 WILLIAM A. ADAMS was born in 1922 at Tullamore, Co. Offaly. He died on 15 January

1991 at St. Columban’s, Manila, during a siesta. He was a nephew of Columban Paddy Kelly who was killed in Manila in 1945. Billy received his secondary education at St. Finian’s College, Mullingar [1936-40], before entering Dalgan in 1940. He was ordained priest in December 1946. He was assigned to the Philippines in 1947 and continued working there for the ensuing

43 years in the Mindanao area. Billy is buried in Medina, Mis. Or.

16 JOSEPH F. CONNEELY Born in 1907 at Glenamaddy, Co. Galway, died on 16 January 1997

in Dalgan. Joe was one of three Columban brothers; Dan and Paul had pre-deceased him. Joe did his secondary education in St. Joseph’s College, Roscrea [19-20], and in St. Jarlath’s College, Tuam [20-24]. He entered Dalgan in 1924 where he was ordained priest on 21 December 1930. Joe was to spend almost twenty years in formation and promotion work in the U.S., including a

term as rector of Silver Creek [47-50]. Assigned to the Philippines in 1950, he was among the first group to go to Zambales where he worked for forty years. In 1992 Joe retired to Dalgan, where he is buried.

Co. Wicklow, on 16 January 1980. John received his secondary education at St. Finian’s College, Mullingar, after which he entered St. Senan’s College, Cahiracon, in 1925. Following his ordination at Dalgan in 1931, he was assigned to Hanyang, China, where he worked until 1948.

He returned to Ireland and did promotion work in Britain until his appointment as Director of the Irish Region in 1952. When his term as Regional Director expired he resumed promotion work. In 1971 he took an assignment as assistant in the parish of Aughrim, Co. Wicklow, where he died. John is buried at Dalgan.

Birmingham, England. His final years were spent in the infirmary in Dalgan. Michael is buried at Dalgan.

16 MALACHY McELROY was born at Armagh in 1914. He died in Solihull, near Birmingham,

on 16 January 1983 as a result of a severe stroke. Malachy was educated at St. Patrick’s College, Armagh, before entering Dalgan in 1934. After his ordination in 1940 he took up pastoral work in the diocese of Clifton, England [1941-46]. In 1947 he went to China and had

just completed his language studies in Peking when, with the Communist take-over imminent, he was appointed to the Philippines. He spent the next twenty-five years in the Philippines where he was engaged in parish work, Student Catholic Action and in the regional offices in Manila. In 1975 he was assigned to Britain where he worked in the Solihull offices. Malachy is buried at Dalgan.

St. Joseph’s Convent, Kildonan, Ayrshire, on 16 January 1960. Bob was studying for priesthood at St. Peter’s College, Wexford, before he came to Dalgan in 1920 where he was ordained priest in June 1921. Assigned to Hanyang, China, he worked there until 1946. He was then assigned to the Irish Region and did pastoral work in England and Scotland. Bob is buried at Dalgan.

17 MICHAEL CULLEN was born in 1925 at Tullysaran, Co. Armagh. He died on 17 January

2006 at Craigavon Hospital, Co. Armagh. Educated at C.B.S., Armagh, Michael came to Dalgan in 1942 and was ordained there in 1948. Assigned to the Philippines, he spent a total of forty-seven years on the Island of Negros, returning from there in 1997 to ‘retirement’ in his home

parish where “he didn’t spare himself as long as work was available.” He endeared himself to all by “his

gentle and unassuming manner and his deep spirituality nourished by persona prayer.” Michael “never forgot his roots and regarded the people at home as his partners in mission.” He is buried among his own at Knockaconey, Co. Armagh.

17 DENIS McALINDON was born at Seagoe, Lurgan, Co. Armagh, in 1906. He died in the Royal Victoria Hospital, Belfast, on 17 January 1993. Having completed his secondary education at St. Colman’s College, Newry, Denis entered Dalgan in 1927 where he was ordained priest on 21 December 1933. He then did postgraduate studies in theology in Rome. Assigned to Burma in 1936 he worked there until 1952 when he was elected Vicar General of

the Society and was re-elected to the same office in the 1962 Chapter. After the 1970 Chapter he was assigned to Ireland where he did pastoral work, mainly in his native diocese of Dromore. In 1976 he was nominated by the Director of Burma as his representative to the General Chapter. Denis is buried at Dalgan.

Hospital, Wales, on 18 January 1954. Jim emigrated to America and it was there he joined the Columbans. He went to St. Columban’s, Omaha, in 1921. He came to Dalgan in 1927 and was ordained priest there in 1930. Returning to the U.S. in 1931, he worked at St. Columban’s, San

Diego, CA [1941-44], and did temporary work in the diocese of San Diego up to 1946. He went to Wales for medical treatment in 1948 and for some years worked at St. Joseph’s, Swansea. He is buried at Dalgan.

18 JOHN J. LYNCH was born at Somerville, MA, in 1927. He died in his sleep on 18 January

1986 at Fort Devins, MA. Before coming to St. Columban’s in 1949 Jack served with the U.S. Army. He was ordained priest at St. Columban’s Seminary, Milton, MA, in 1956. He was appointed to the Philippines in 1957 and worked there until 1961. Returning to the U.S. he did

diocesan work in Brooklyn, NY, and Omaha. He then did promotion work in Omaha, Los Angeles and Denver, and pastoral work in Westminster, CA, parish and St. John’s, Virgin Islands. In 1967 he joined the U.S. Army as a chaplain and did two tours of duty in Vietnam. He held the rank of Lt. Colonel and was on active duty at the time of his death. He is buried at St. Patrick’s Cemetery, Stoneham, MA.

Dalgan Nursing Home on January 18, 2012. Pat was educated at Lettir NS, CBS Cahirciveen, CBS Sullivan’s before coming to Dalgan in 1947. He was ordained priest on 21, December 1953, was assigned to Japan in 1954. After language studies he went to the District of Chiba as assistant and later as pastor in Tateyama. Then he served in Gobo in Wakayama. In the 1960s he was

pastor in Oe, Amakusa Island, Kyushu, and District Superior in the Kanagawa area. From 1970 -1976 he served as Regional Direrctor of Japan. Before returning to Ireland in 1998 he worked in Kisarazu, Odawara and Mishima. Pat had a deep interest in people and enjoyed being with others. He was cheerful and approachable. He bore his long illness with fortitude and great patience. Pat is buried at Dalgan.

18 FRANCIS WHELAN was born in Dublin in 1906. He died at St. Columbans, Nebraska, on

18 January 1971. Frank was one of five priest brothers, three of whom were Columbans. He received his secondary education at O’Connell Schools [Christian Brothers], Dublin. Ordained priest in 1930, he was assigned to China where he worked in Nancheng. He was appointed to

the U.S. Region in 1951 and was manager of the American FAR EAST and a member of the Director’s Council. Frank is buried at Holy Sepulchre, Omaha.

19 TIMOTHY BEECHER was born in Cork City in 1911. He died on 19 January 1941 in the

Dominican Sisters’ hospital, Foochow, Fukien, China. He had suffered successive heart attacks after a successful operation for abdomen pains. Tim received his early education at North Presentation Convent, Cork, and at North Monastery [Christian Brothers School], Cork. He

entered Dalgan in 1929 and was ordained priest there on 21 December 1935 by Bishop Galvin. Bishop Cleary wrote of him: “he was an exemplary priest and a delightful companion. He had got a good mastery of Chinese and gave every promise of being a great success in the Seminary. He had endeared himself to his seminarians and they will feel his loss”. Tim is buried at Nancheng.

19 J. AUGUSTINE SWEENEY was a brother of Columban Jerome Sweeney who, like Austin,

worked in Korea. Austin was born at Weaste, Manchester, England, in 1909. He died at Lower Hutt, New Zealand, from cancer on 19 January 1980. Austin’s family emigrated to Australia in 1920. He studied at St. Patrick’s College, East Melbourne, then joined the Society. Was ordained

priest at Dalgan in 1934. Appointed to Korea, worked in Mokpo and Cheju-do [1935-49]. He was interned by the Japanese but released due to poor health after two years. Back to Australia in 1949 he did pastoral and promotion work and was bursar for some years at St. Columban’s, Sassafras, Victoria, our Spiritual Year house. He went to Lower Hutt, New Zealand, in 1961. Austin is buried at Taita, near Lower Hutt.

Dalgan on 20 January 1981. Tom was educated at St Colman’s College, Newry, before entering St. Senan’s College, Cahiracon, in 1926. He came to Dalgan in 1927 but did his last three years theology in St. Columban’s, Nebraska, where he was ordained priest in 1932. After his

ordination, he was assigned to the Philippines where he worked for the next 44 years. In 1977 he returned to Ireland and acted as chaplain at Star of the Sea Convent in Lisdoonvarna, Co. Clare, until 1979 when ill health forced his retirement. Tom is buried at Dalgan.

20 THOMAS R. DWYER Born at Wellington, New Zealand, in 1912, died at Lower Hutt, N.Z.,

on 20 January 1974. Tom was educated by the Marist Fathers at St. Bede’s, Christchurch. In 1931 he began his studies at St. Columban’s, Essendon. He was ordained priest at Dalgan in 1937 after completing his theology course. Tom spent a year as Spiritual Director at Essendon

before being appointed to the Philippines in 1939. While he was pastor of Labrador in 1950 guerillas captured and killed his assistant, Fr. Tommy Flynn. In 1952 Tom joined the Trappists in New Mexico but returned to the Columbans three years later. He was granted laicization but returned to the Society after some years. He worked in the U.S. before being assigned to New Zealand in 1972. At the time of his death he was in charge of THE FAR EAST office at Lower Hutt. He is buried at Taita, near Lower Hutt.

Springs, U.S.A., on 20 January 1957. Michael [“Doc”] Mee went to St. John’s College, Waterford, He was ordained priest in 1910 for the diocese of Alton [now Springfield], U.S.A. Worked in that diocese until 1918 when he joined the Society. He did promotion work in the U.S. prior to going to Hanyang, China, in 1920. Owing to continuing ill health he left China in 1922, returned

to the U.S. and worked in various dioceses. He spent a year with the Graymoor Community, New York, with a view to joining the Capuchin Congregation. He is buried at Holy Sepulchre Cemetery, Omaha.

From 1976 he did research on John Blowick and John Henaghan while he worked in the regional offices. Frank is buried at Dalgan.

22 THOMAS L. MURPHY was born at Taunton, MA, in 1918. He died suddenly while visiting

friends in New York on 22 January 1994. Tom began his education for priesthood at St. Columban’s, Silver Creek, NY, in 1931 and was ordained priest in Providence, RI, on 19 December 1942. His first assignment was to study journalism at Columbia University, NY, and

Marquette University, Milwaukee, WI. In 1945 he joined the editorial staff of COLUMBAN MISSION. He was assigned to the Philippines in 1954 and worked in Mindanao until his recall in 1959 to the staff of COLUMBAN MISSION at Omaha. In 1967 he spent two years on the editorial staff of THE FAR EAST at St. Columban’s, Nth. Essendon. Returning to the U.S., he did pastoral work until his retirement through illness. Tom is buried at St. Anne’s Cemetery, Cranston, RI.

1935 and spent most of the next 12 years in Shanghai. He returned to Ireland in 1947 and did pastoral and promotion work until ill health forced him to retire to the Priests’ Home, Dalgan. He is buried at Dalgan.

24 ROBERT W. BURKE was born in Chicago in 1923. He died on January 24, 2011. Bob

graduated from Saint Mary of the Lake Seminary in 1949 for the Archdiocese of Chicago where he worked for five years. In 1954 he was granted permission to join the Columbans. The following year he was appointed to the Philippines and spent 18 years in Kabankalan. He

worked in our Milton seminary for 4 years before returning to the Philippines and serving a further 18 years in Bacuyangan. In 1993 he retired and returned to his family in Chicago. He served the Filipino Community there and assisted at Our Lady of Peace Church in Darien until he got ill. He died 3 months later. Bob is buried at Holy Sepulchre Cemetery in Alsip, IL.

24 ROBERT W. BURKE nació en Chicago en 1923. Murió el 24 de enero de 2011. 24 JOHN DOOHAN was born in 1923 in the parish of Kilmurry, Co. Clare. He died at St.

Columban’s, Manila, on 24 January 2009 after almost 50 years service to the people of the Philippines. After his secondary education at St. Flannan’s, Ennis, John came to Dalgan Park and was ordained there in 1947. His brother, Michael, also joined the Columbans and was likewise appointed to the Philippines. John’s first assignment was to Mindanao in 1948, after which, in

1950, he was a member of the pioneering team to Negros. There he spent almost 50 years developing and ministering in a number of parishes with enthusiasm and missionary zeal. His health eventually failed and he was forced to retire to Manila where he died in 2009. John was laid to rest in the parish of Dancalan, his last place of pastoral ministry, after a genuinely impressive farewell from his loyal people.

24 BRENDAN FAHEY was born on 8 May 1930 at Cloonfad, Co. Roscommon. After ordination

on 21 December 1953 he was assigned to Japan. He worked in Wakayama, Chigasaki and Kisarazu parishes. A colleague said he was the only foreigner who could pun in Japanese and be understood. After courses in the US from 1978 he went to St. Bede’s, Widnes, England. From 1990 until 1995 he was in St. Beuno’s, Wales, taking the three-month spirituality course before

joining the staff as a highly regarded lecturer and spiritual director. Ten happy years as pastor in Denbigh followed. He returned to Dalgan in 2007 where his gentle presence, quiet humour and deep spirituality made him an invaluable member of the nursing home pastoral team. His health deteriorated rapidly in the last few months and he died peacefully on 24 January 2016. Brendan is buried in Dalgan.

24 JOHN O’DONOVAN Born at Leap, Co. Cork, in 1895. He died in Tokyo on 24 January 1959.

John studied at Castleknock College, Dublin, before going to St. Patrick’s College, Maynooth, in 1912 to study for priesthood in the diocese of Ross. He came to Dalgan in January 1918 and was ordained priest at Maynooth in April 1918. John taught theology at Dalgan [1918-24]. He

was appointed to the U.S. where he spent the next twenty-three years teaching and directing students. In 1927 he was appointed rector at Silver Creek. He also served as vice-Director for 13 years. In 1948 he was transferred to Japan and for a time served as Catholic adviser to U.S. General MacArthur’s Chief of Religious and Cultural Resources. When his appointment with the U.S. occupation forces ended he took up pastoral work in Japan. He was the uncle of Michael Scully. He is buried at Fuchu, near Tokyo.

25 FRANCIS O’LEARY was born in 1935 at Readrinagh, Headford, Killarney. He died

suddenly of a heart attack on 25 January 1992 at the Centre House in Santiago, Chile. Frank was a brother of Columban Owen O’Leary and a nephew of Jeremiah Dennehy, Superior General [1947-51]. Having received his secondary education at Christian Brothers School, Tralee [1946-48], and at St. Brendan’s Seminary Killarney [1948-52], Frank entered Dalgan in

1952 and was ordained priest there on 21 December 1958. Soon after being appointed to the Philippines in 1959 Frank was sent to Rome to study Canon Law. Likewise after being appointed to the U.S. he returned to Rome to do a Doctorate in Theology, specializing in Liturgy. In 1966 he joined the College staff in Dalgan, where he taught until appointed to Chile in 1973. In 1985 Frank became the first Director of the Mission Institute at Dalgan. He was reappointed to Chile in 1990 and was named as the new Director there in 1991. Frank is buried at Santiago.

25 FRANCIS O'LEARY nació en 1935 en Readrinagh, Headford, Killarney. Murió repentinamente de un ataque al corazón el 25 de enero de 1992 en la Casa del Centro en Santiago, Chile. 25 PATRICK REILLY was born at Moynalty, Co. Meath, in 1922. He died after a prolonged

illness at Dalgan on 25 January 1998. His brother, Mattie, is also a Columban. Paddy came to the Old Dalgan in 1940 having done his secondary studies at St. Finian’s College, Mullingar. He was ordained priest on 21 December 1946 and assigned to China where he studied Chinese in Shanghai and then appointed to Huzhou. With three confreres, Paddy was arrested for alleged

subversive activities and spent a year in prison ending with the expulsion of The Four Felons from China in November 1953. Having recovered from his ordeal, Paddy was assigned to Britain and worked in the Irish Emigrant Welfare apostolate until 1963 when he was appointed to the Philippines. He returned to Ireland in 1982 and worked in his native diocese of Meath until he was forced to retire to Dalgan in 1992. Paddy is buried at Dalgan.

26 JOHN NYHAN was born at Kilkenny in 1942. He died suddenly in Seoul, Korea, on 26

January 2003 on his way to a diocesan synod at the Cathedral. Having graduated from St. Kieran’s College he entered Dalgan and was ordained there in 1965. Assigned to Korea, he spent twenty-five years in Chunchon Diocese working in various parishes before moving to Seoul in 1992, where he was engaged in hospital and parish ministry. Faithful and kind to

many people in trouble, John is buried at Yongin, Seoul.

27 GERARD ELLIS was born at Mohill, Co. Leitrim, in 1930. He died unexpectedly at St.

Bede’s parish, Widnes, nr. Liverpool, on 27 January 2000. When Gerry had completed his secondary education at St. Mel’s in Longford he came to Dalgan in 1948 and was ordained there in 1954. Assigned to Korea, he excelled in the Korean language both at language school

and in his ministry in the dioceses of Chunchon and Seoul. He spent a few years from 1979 on Mission animation work in New Zealand and then returned to Korea in 1984. St. Bede’s parish was his next assignment, in 1992. Available and dedicated, like his Columban uncle Fr. Tom, Gerry won many friends. He is buried at Dalgan.

27 ARTHUR J. FRIEL was born in Ballylar, Lifford, Co. Donegal, in 1916. He died

unexpectedly at St. Columban’s, Bristol, RI, on 27 January 2002. Having received his secondary education at St. Eunan’s, Letterkenny, Art came to Dalgan in 1934 and was ordained there in December 1940. Due to the war he joined the R.A.F. and served in Europe ‘til 1946. Appointed to China, he studied Japanese in Shanghai and in 1948 was appointed Regional Bursar in

Japan. During his period as Superior in Wakayama he invited the Daughters of Charity to staff a hospital and school for crippled children. A good student, Art majored in Japanese at Seton Hall University, in 1964. He had a special interest in the caring aspect of ministry on which he wrote a manuscript - and worked as chaplain in many hospitals until his retirement. Art is buried at East Providence, RI.

27 RICHARD OWENS was born at Cooneen, Co. Fermanagh, in 1932. He died unexpectedly on 27 January 2007, following surgery at Erne Hospital, Enniskillen. Having completed his secondary studies at St. Macartan’s College, Monaghan, Dick came to St. Columban’s, Dalgan in 1951 and was ordained priest there in 1957. His first and only overseas mission assignment was to Japan, in 1958. Apart from six years [1974-1980] spent on promotion work in Ireland,

Dick served in most Columban areas of Japan. His wry sense of humour and his relaxed manner of communication in Japanese, won him many friends and admirers. On his return to Ireland in 2004, Dick assisted in his native diocese of Clogher. The large number of local clergy at his Requiem Mass in Enniskillen was an indicator of their appreciation of “one of their own.” Dick is buried at Dalgan.

31 JAMES A. KENNEDY was born in 1894 at Cahirconlish, Co. Limerick. He died on 31

January 1990 at St. Vincent’s Hospital, Dublin. Jim’s secondary education was in Sacred Heart College, The Crescent, Limerick. His seminary formation was in St. Patrick’s College, Thurles [1912-13], Irish College, Paris [1913-14], and St. Patrick’s College, Maynooth [1914-19]. After ordination to priesthood in Maynooth on 6 July 1919, he joined the Columbans. Assigned to

THE FAR EAST office, he became Manager in 1924 until 1959. From 1924-1960 he was a member of the Irish Director’s Council and also a member and secretary of the Superior General’s Council from 1931-1947. Jim was domestic bursar at Dowdstown House and farm bursar [1959-66], then continued the latter work until 1974. He spent the last 10 years of his life in the Priests’ Home, Dalgan. Jim is buried at Dalgan.

31 VINCENT McNALLY was born near Carrickmacross, Co. Monaghan, in 1919. He died on 31 January 2003 in Wakayama, Japan. Having graduated from St. Macartan’s College, Monaghan, he came to Dalgan in 1937 and was ordained in 1943. War precluded an overseas assignment so he worked in the diocese of Clogher until 1946 when he was assigned to China. There he worked in Nancheng until 1951 when he was expelled and appointed to

Japan. For the next half century Vinny lived a simple lifestyle in the Wakayama and Kumamoto areas. After cremation his ashes were interred in Yakatamachi, the parish in which he died.
