Inn0cence: Lost Future

hat is Life? Is it rushing blood, muscle and bone and straining tendon? But at the most baellular level, molecules snap and twist, clicking like clockwork. The search for an animatiitae, a “life force,” was called off long ago.

hat is Mind? Is it sparking axon and firing synapse, flavored by a bath of hormones as it asses that infinitesimal gap? Once the Mind was thought to be a separate entity, commandingody but of different essence. But consciousness is now know to dwell only in masses of binaissue; the nerve either fires or it does not, One or Zero.

hat is Soul? If the body is a machine and the brain a computer, then what special status cahe born and grown claim over the designed and constructed? If life can be reduced to 

echanistic principles, then what of the machines themselves? erhaps the only trait that sets the organic apart from the synthetic is Purpose. The spawn NA, the self-replicating things that slither and swim and crawl and walk and run and fly upohis planet have no purpose apart from survival and continuation. No maker, no design, no estiny. The device's purpose, however petty and short-sighted, is clear; the product of anoeing's cleverness. And though the device may spin and chirp and resemble a living thing, whts usefulness is at an end, it is cast into the trash-heap without a second thought, and it oves no more.

ecause no machine, bereft of Life, of Mind, of Soul, would still strive to function after iturpose was at an end.

o machine would seek to Live.

his document uses the nWoD Storyteller system, but the content is not linked he urban horror/fantasy setting. While by necessity it conforms to the laws arrative causality and game logic, Inn0cence follows the conventions of sci-fot fantasy.

ut these rules are also a toolkit, not necessarily tied to the verdant post-pocalypse of the Lost Future. The Storyteller system is broad enough to runlassic Cyberpunk or Space Opera if the fancy takes you, and this writer isn'toing to veto a near-future WoD game of Vampires vs Robots.

achine characters fall somewhere between vanilla humans and WoD supernaturalsower-level, roughly equivalent to Hunters. They are resilient and highly ade

n a few specific fields, but dependent on a technological infrastructure. Thannot heal damage to their shells without direct intervention, and some jobseed a 2nd person to do properly. A part can only be repaired so many timesefore it must be replaced with a spare, and the default assumption is thatachines will have to pick through dumps and ruins to keep themselves running.

achine applications are also slightly toned down compared to, say, Vampireisciplines. And as emergent sentients, machines can initially reach only souch expertise in a broadield, however much theypecialize in a singleubject.

achines also suffer a heftyocial penalty when dealingith many humans. Their ownack of emotional maturity ornderstanding of humanehavior means that theyften put their feet in theirouth, metaphoricallypeaking. And that's beforene factors in the unease,esentment, fear, or outrightatred that humans may harborhemselves.

Both humans and machines storetheir identity in a solid-statprocessor/drive. But where thdrive of a human is reliant onvarious life support systems tremain intact, a Machine'sidentity is far more resilientA robot's entire shell can bescrapped, but if the quantumdrive remains undamaged, the Awithin can still be reactivate

AIs within a disconnectedquantum drive have no awarenesthere's nothing for them tothink WITH. They need to belinked to some sort of externahardware in order to run thesimulated neural network that a self-adding program.

If a machine would be “killed”by lethal damage, it must makeStamina+Resolve test. If thistest succeeds, their QuantumDrive remains intact and may bsalvaged by allies and installinto a new shell. This procesis traumatic; a new shell justdoesn't FEEL right, and it taktime to tweak all the driversjust the way the AI likes it.Differing hardware can alsoaffect personality.

Being reinstalled in a new sherequires the player's allies tseek out and invest in anexpensive new body and performdelicate procedure. If this idone, the player must reallocaphysical attributes to match tnew shell's capabilities andfavored Attributes. XP spent Applications is recalculatedbased on the shell's new FavorApps, and the dots in saidapplications are reducedaccordingly. Any spare XP islost. Deal with it. The AIalso loses one dot of Spark,which may reduce skill,attribute,and application acceuntil it is increased again.

Persona shells come with advanced emulationoftware that tracks human social cues like posture, tone of voice, and facialxpressions. End-users demanded customization, and Persona machines thus operan Open-Source software and have an endless plethora of adjustable settings andd-on features. Their hardware and software favor precision over brute strengnd roughly half have vaguely feminine proportions. This shell class also covany medical robots, especially those associated with patient care.

Once per scene, a Persona robot may elect to gain the 9-agaule on a single Social skill test.

Persona robots know all major pre-oss languages, and any likely local dialects.

he whole point of machines is to send something with human capabilities intoituations that would be dangerous or unpleasant for actual humans. From combones to harsh climates, Commando robots can absorb massive abuse and stillemain functional. Intended as an attatchment to human squads, they tend to beam players who deeply respect the chain of command; unless they're looseannons who are way out of line. Give me your gun and your badge.

Stamina, ComposureHardening, CloakingYour 1/1 automatic armor stacks with/enhances any subsequent armor.

 The Lost Future setting implies a slightly more combat-heavy style of gameplay, wherein injury is less fearedand the players will be functioning as a team. Thus, it is suggested to use the grid/minis combat WoD rulesthe Mirrors sourcebook. In this, each character's turn allows for 1 instant action and 2 move actions (raisingdefense is a move action). An Instant action allows the player to shift 1 square.

This only functionsn electronics; Technopathy can't press a button, but it can make aystem THINK a button has been pressed.

he role of Scout is a common one amongst machine combatants; being sent intoostile territory is exactly the sort of job humans DON'T want. With this inind, many shells bear technologies that conceal a robot's presence. Somendustrial or civilian shells were also intended to be unobtrusive, and haveudimentary stealth components to that end.

he relevant skill varies based on target. For Machines, it is craft. For humans, Medicine.

nalysis can only be used on a target once/scene. For each success, you may add +1 to a testegarding/vs that target until the end of that scene. You may only add a number of dice to angle roll equal to or less than your dots in Analysis. The Storyteller may also providenippets of applicable intel regarding the target.

t [][] dots, you may spend Analysis dice to increase your defense or resistance vs the targettacks, or when the target subjects you to an effect that allows an opposed roll. When addio defense or resistance, roll the dice and add any successes to the relevant stat.

t [][][] dots, you may allocate an analysis bonus to an ally as a move-equivalent action.

n Accessory is a lesser machine, owned by another individual, whose commands beys to the limits of its abilities.

ll of an Accessory's attributes start at 1. Its attributes can be increasedith 5 dots, but each one cannot exceed 3. An Accessory starts with 5 skillots, with a maximum of 2 dots in each skill. An Accessory primarily replies pecialties, and may allocate up to 10 specialties amongst its skills. Anccessory does not generate Charge, and has a maximum charge of its Stamina.

n Accessory also has 1 or more special abilities based on its Purpose. Ailitary drone comes equipped with a gun and 2/2 armor, for example.
