A Lot of Life Lessons from The Life of Lot

You will act like what you see, hear, and think; regardless of who you really are.

2Pet 2:7-8 7 And delivered just Lot, vexed with the filthy conversation of the wicked: 8 (For that righteous man dwelling among them, in seeing and hearing, vexed his righteous soul from day to day with their unlawful deeds;)

You will act like what you see, hear, and think; regardless of who you really are.

I. Early Influence Gen 12:10 And there was a famine in the land: and Abram went down into Egypt to sojourn there; for the famine was grievous in the land. Bad move influenced lotWhat you do in moderation your children will do in excess.

Abraham didn’t ask God what to do about the famine he just moved to Egypt.

Eccl 12:1 Remember now thy Creator in the days of thy youth, while the evil days come not, nor the years draw nigh, when thou shalt say, I have no pleasure in them;

Lesson not learned by Lot: God is the leader you’ll find Him where you left Him.

Gen 12:7-9 7 And the LORD appeared unto Abram, and said, Unto thy seed will I give this land: and there builded he an altar unto the LORD, who appeared unto him. 8 And he removed from thence unto a mountain on the east of Bethel, and pitched his tent, having Bethel on the west, and Hai on the east: and there he builded an altar unto the LORD, and called upon the name of the LORD. 9 And Abram journeyed, going on still toward the south. Gen 13:3-4 3 And he went on his journeys from the south even to Bethel, unto the place where his tent had been at the beginning, between Bethel and Hai; 4 Unto the place of the altar, which he had made there at the first: and there Abram called on the name of the LORD.

II. Divine division Gen 13:8 And Abram said unto Lot, Let there be no strife, I pray thee, between me and thee, and between my herdmen and thy herdmen; for we be brethren.

Gen 13:6-7 6 And the land was not able to bear them, that they might dwell together: for their substance was great, so that they could not dwell together. 7 And there was a strife between the herdmen of Abram's cattle and the herdmen of Lot's cattle: and the Canaanite and the Perizzite dwelled then in the land. Must be a separation from the vessels of honor and those of dishonor

Backup the boat and see what makes it float.Gen 12:1-4 1 Now the LORD had said unto Abram, Get thee out of thy country, and from thy kindred, and from thy father's house, unto a land that I will shew thee: 2 And I will make of thee a great nation, and I will bless thee, and make thy name great; and thou shalt be a blessing:

Page 3: Lot

3 And I will bless them that bless thee, and curse him that curseth thee: and in thee shall all families of the earth be blessed. 4 So Abram departed, as the LORD had spoken unto him; and Lot went with him: and Abram was seventy and five years old when he departed out of Haran. 2Tim 2:20-21 20 But in a great house there are not only vessels of gold and of silver, but also of wood and of earth; and some to honour, and some to dishonour . 21 If a man therefore purge himself from these, he shall be a vessel unto honour, sanctified, and meet for the master's use, and prepared unto every good work.

God divides to multiply purity and power (six divisions from Gen. 1-14)Gen 1:4 … and God divided the light from the darkness. Gen 1:7 …and divided the waters…Gen 10:5 By these were the isles of the Gentiles divided…Gen 10:25 …Peleg; for in his days was the earth divided…Gen 10:32 …by these were the nations divided…Gen 14:15 And he divided himself against them…After the division God speaks to Abraham for the first time since 12:7Gen 13:14 And the LORD said unto Abram, after that Lot was separated from him, Lift up now thine eyes, and look from the place where thou art northward, and southward, and eastward, and westward:

III. Secret sin stirred by imagination Gen 13:10 And Lot lifted up his eyes, and beheld all the plain of Jordan, that it was well watered every where, before the LORD destroyed Sodom and Gomorrah, even as the garden of the LORD, like the land of Egypt, as thou comest unto Zoar. Nostalgia of the good ‘ol bad days

Your memory cannot be trusted (Many a battered wife returns to the abuser because of a faulty memory)Exod 2:23 And it came to pass in process of time, that the king of Egypt died: and the children of Israel sighed by reason of the bondage, and they cried, and their cry came up unto God by reason of the bondage. Exod 16:3 And the children of Israel said unto them, Would to God we had died by the hand of the LORD in the land of Egypt, when we sat by the flesh pots, and when we did eat bread to the full; for ye have brought us forth into this wilderness, to kill this whole assembly with hunger. Num 11:4-6 4 And the mixt multitude that was among them fell a lusting: and the children of Israel also wept again, and said, Who shall give us flesh to eat? 5 We remember the fish, which we did eat in Egypt freely; the cucumbers, and the melons, and the leeks, and the onions, and the garlick: 6 But now our soul is dried away : there is nothing at all, beside this manna, before our eyes.

Lot never ask God where he should go2Cor 10:4-6 4 (For the weapons of our warfare are not carnal, but mighty through God to the pulling down of strong holds;) 5 Casting down imaginations, and every high thing that exalteth itself against the knowledge of God, and bringing into captivity every thought to the obedience of Christ; 6 And having in a readiness to revenge all disobedience, when your obedience is fulfilled.

IV. Evil Alliance Revealed Gen 14:2 That these made war with Bera king of Sodom, and with Birsha king of Gomorrah, Shinab king of Admah, and Shemeber king of Zeboiim, and the king of Bela, which is Zoar. http://www.sacred-texts.com/bib/ebd/index.htm http://www.promiseed.com/articles/others/bible_names.html

Page 5: Lot

Bera king of Sodom- Bera: Meaning "son of evil" [Num 11:1-3 “Ta-bera-h” because the fire of the LORD burnt among them.]Birsha king of Gomorrah- Birsha: Meaning "son of wickedness"Shinab king of Admah- Shinab: Meaning "cooling"Shemeber king of Zeboiim- Shemeber: Meaning "force"the king of Bela, which is Zoar- Bela: Meaning " A thing swallowed"

Gen 13:12 Abram dwelled in the land of Canaan, and Lot dwelled in the cities of the plain, and pitched his tent toward Sodom. Prov 1:14 Cast in thy lot among us; let us all have one purse:

V. Fruit of tolerance Gen 19:12 And the men said unto Lot, Hast thou here any besides? son in law, and thy sons, and thy daughters, and whatsoever thou hast in the city, bring them out of this place: v.14 two daughters died in Sodom14 And Lot went out, and spake unto his sons in law, which married his daughters, and said, Up, get you out of this place; for the LORD will destroy this city. But he seemed as one that mocked unto his sons in law. He must have had a history of wicked humor.

Prov 14:9 Fools make a mock at sin: but among the righteous there is favour.

Gen 19:18-19 18 And Lot said unto them, Oh, not so, my Lord: 19 Behold now, thy servant hath found grace in thy sight, and thou hast magnified thy mercy, which thou hast shewed unto me in saving my life; and I cannot escape to the mountain, lest some evil take me, and I die:

Imagined “evil” exalted over actual evil.

Page 6: Lot

God’s “extreme” is your safety; the question is never “what’s wrong with it? The proper question is; What’s right with it? Ps 33:17 An horse is a vain thing for safety: neither shall he deliver any by his great strength. Ps 4:8 I will both lay me down in peace, and sleep: for thou, LORD, only makest me dwell in safety.

Gen 24:5-6 5 And the servant said unto him, Peradventure the woman will not be willing to follow me unto this land: must I needs bring thy son again unto the land from whence thou camest? 6 And Abraham said unto him, Beware thou that thou bring not my son thither again.

VI. Reformed rebellion Gen 19:29 And it came to pass, when God destroyed the cities of the plain, that God remembered Abraham, and sent Lot out of the midst of the overthrow, when he overthrew the cities in the which Lot dwelt.

“Cities, he must have been a united nations rep.”

Gen 19:20 Behold now, this city is near to flee unto, and it is a little one: Oh, let me escape thither, (is it not a little one?) and my soul shall live. Luke 17:31-32 31 In that day, he which shall be upon the housetop, and his stuff in the house, let him not come down to take it away: and he that is in the field, let him likewise not return back. 32 Remember Lot's wife.

VII. The legacy of a lazy believer

Page 7: Lot

Gen 19:32 Come, let us make our father drink wine, and we will lie with him, that we may preserve seed of our father. Gen 19:36 Thus were both the daughters of Lot with child by their father. Gen 19:8 Behold now, I have two daughters which have not known man…How did they go from innocent to incest? Where did they get the wine? How did they know wine would work? Why would he drink himself unconscious 2 days in a row?Why didn’t he go back to Abraham? (Lot now owned nothing, there would have been enough room for him)

Luke 17:28-29 28 Likewise also as it was in the days of Lot; they did eat, they drank, they bought, they sold, they planted, they builded; 29 But the same day that Lot went out of Sodom it rained fire and brimstone from heaven, and destroyed them all. 1Pet 5:8 Be sober, be vigilant; because your adversary the devil, as a roaring lion, walketh about, seeking whom he may devour: Heb 2:1 Therefore we ought to give the more earnest heed to the things which we have heard, lest at any time we should let them slip.

You must live life by God’s principles on purpose, or you will end up with a lot of Lot’s problems.
