Message from the Director: As the cold weather begins to ebb and spring officially sets in, we can look forward to warmer temperatures as well as new summer-themed Lottery promotions. I am happy to announce that we will be continuing our partnership with the Baltimore Orioles, with Lottery players winning money with every Orioles hit. We’re also introducing a new scratch-off, Summer Fun, which gives players the chance to win one of two all-expense paid dream vacations. In addition, the 40 Rubies and The Price is Right second-chance contests have officially kicked off and will run through August, so remind your players about the extra opportunities to win.Speaking of winning, the Mega Millions jackpot came back to Maryland in February when a Mt. Airy woman claimed a $26 million jackpot. This is the first Mega Millions jackpot win in Maryland since the three public school employees shared the $218.6 million portion of the record-breaking $656 million jackpot from March 2012. For selling the winning ticket, the retailer received a $26,000 commission. As always, thank you for your continued efforts. Have a successful start to your spring and keep up the good work.

Classic Fuels, located at 11719 Old National Pike in New Market, is a clear example of how the Lottery’s SalesMaker program can benefit your store. Since the store’s makeover last June, their weekly sales average has more than doubled, jumping from $7,000 to just over $15,000.Due to the boost in sales and product turnover, the store has seen an increase in winning tickets. Following the $1 million Silver and Gold scratch-off sold prior to the makeover, Classic Fuels sold a $10,000 40 Rubies winner just last month.“The key to Lottery success is knowing the product,” said manager Barry Harris. “If you aren’t familiar with the tickets, you aren’t going to be able to convince your customers to play. I also always tell my regular players when new games arrive.”It also helps to show winning tickets that were sold at the store and to have a positive attitude. “The employees at Classic Fuels are very pro-Lottery,” said Lottery District Manager John O’Connor. “They always listen to ideas and convey a positive attitude.”One of the most important ways to succeed is simple, according to Barry. “Be friendly.”
Regional Advisory Meetings ReturnAssistant Director for the Lottery John Martin will be meeting with retailers throughout the state in April. This is your chance to voice your questions and concerns to the Lottery. You’ll hear about upcoming instant ticket launches, marketing promotions, ideas to improve your Lottery sales and new point of sale concepts for just about any store layout. Seating is limited so if you’d like to join us, please contact your district manager today!
