Lotto NRFL 2015 Welcome

The most recent bout of Lotto NRFL action highlighted the unpredictable nature of the league with a raft of upsets across all divisions. If the form book continues to be thrown out the door then the country’s leading club-based competition will make for fascinating viewing this weekend and you don’t want to miss out!

With the FIFA U-20 World Cup set to steal the limelight from next week, what better way to warm-up for the biggest celebration of global football ever seen in New Zealand than by taking in the best of what the local game has to offer? We are now entering an important period in the season as each side looks to put them-selves in contention to launch a promotion push or, at the other end of the table, pull away from the relegation places. In the programme this week, we preview Round 11 of the Premier League, Round 10 of Divisions One and Two, and Round 9 of the Women’s Premier, as well as featuring photos from Phototek of several recent matches. In the spotlight were Ellerslie’s 1-0 win against Waiuku in Division One, Papakura City’s 4-3 triumph over Fencibles United in Division Two and Lynn-Avon United’s 1-0 success at Papatoetoe in the Women’s Premier.

As always, we also have all the up-to-date league tables, graphs, golden boot charts and squads so there is a wealth of info at your fingertips!

Programme 2015

Waitakere City vs Western Springs

Fred Taylor Park | Saturday 23 May | Kick-off: 2.45pm | Referee: Hayden Tutbury Assistant Referees: Steve Merriman, Wandyck Freitas

The points here will be highly sought after as both sides have found wins hard to come by and are at the wrong end of the table. Springs will go in as favourites after posting back-to-back victories but Waitakere showed signs of improvement last week in taking a half-time lead against Central before falling 2-1. Both sides are lacking a goal scorer with no player able to score more than three times.

Melville United vs Onehunga Sports Gower Park | Saturday 23 May | Kick-off: 2.45pm | Referee: Carl Watkins Assistant Referees: Nadia Browning, Hubert Bakz

Melville will be disappointed to have taken no points from their trip to Western Springs as scoring three goals on the road would usually be enough to secure a win. But coach Steve Williams will be heartened at the improved attacking display as his side had hit just four goals prior to that. If they can also tighten up at the back then a first win could be a possibility but Sports will be confident after a 3-0 triumph at Bay Olympic.

Three Kings United vs Glenfield Rovers Keith Hay Park | Saturday 23 May | Kick-off: 2.45pm | Referee: Martin Neale Assistant Referees: Jeremy Ferguson, John McCoskrie

This is the most eye-catching fixture of the round and both sides will be itching for the points after failing to win last weekend, Three Kings suffering a surprise loss at East Coast Bays while Glenfield were held to a draw by Birkenhead. There will be an array of attacking talent on display in each team but Glenfield have the division’s best defensive record so the hosts’ hopes will rest on their ability to break through that stubborn rearguard.

Eastern Suburbs vs East Coast Bays

Madills Farm | Saturday 23 May | Kick-off: 2.45pm | Referee: Anna-Marie Keighley Assistant Referees: Sarah Walker, Lata Kaumatale

Suburbs have been the surprise package of the league so far and are in third place despite playing one game less than all sides around them. If they can keep that run going over the coming weeks then they could well emerge as dark horses for the title but games like this against bottom-half sides will need to be won for that to happen. Bays coach Willy Gerdsen had reason to toast himself mid-week after being named boss of ASB Premiership side Canterbury United for next season.

Birkenhead United vs Central United

Shepherds Park | Saturday 23 May | Kick-off: 2.45pm | Referee: Mark Owens Assistant Referees: Ben Hill, Dominic Hopkirk

It will come as a surprise to most onlookers that Central are now ahead of Birkenhead, last year’s runners-up, on the table and making sure that remains the case will be the challenge for Jose Figueira here. Despite finishing six places below them, Central did the double over Birkenhead last season so the home side has a score to settle in this one.

Bay Olympic vs Hamilton Wanderers

Olympic Park | Saturday 23 May | Kick-off: 3pm | Referee: Steven Black Assistant Referees: Mazhar Batoor, Greg Woo

These sides are both looking to bounce back after falling to disappointing defeats in the previous round but Bay Olympic will have to do so without the services of their main marksman. Jared Colligan was sent off in their loss to Onehunga and his absence through suspension will be a blow, especially considering second-placed Wanderers have been beaten just twice so far.

Forrest Hill-Milford United vs Papatoetoe

Galloway Park | Sunday 24 May | Kick-off: 1pm | Referee: Brett Willis Assistant Referees: Hilary Osborne, Reza Al Rabea

Third-from-top plays third-from-bottom in this one with a home win appearing the most likely outcome, particularly as Papatoetoe’s confidence will be in tatters after a 6-1 demolition at the hands of Glenfield. They will want to avoid another rout here but the omens do not look good with Forrest Hill fresh from a 7-0 thumping of Norwest. The hosts have a lethal strike force with Tayla O’Brien and Aimee Phillips boasting 17 goals between them.

Eastern Suburbs vs Norwest United Madills Farm | Sunday 24 May | Kick-off: 1pm | Referee: Aiden Moffatt Assistant Referees: Salman Ali, Caleb Moffatt

Norwest have been on the end of one hiding too many and, even if they fail to pick up any points here, coach Chris Acott would see a narrow defeat as progress. They have conceded 17 unanswered goals in the last three games and must start stemming the tide to have any chance of staying in the division. Suburbs have won just two matches but, with home advantage and facing a side below them on the table, anything less than a win would be seen as a disappointment.

Glenfield Rovers vs Three Kings United McFetridge Park | Sunday 24 May | Kick-off: 1pm | Referee: Tupou Patia Assistant Referees: Lata Kaumatale, Sarah Walker

This clash between two of the heavyweights of the women’s game claims top billing this weekend and the outcome will have a significant impact on the table as Glenfield are just three points behind second-placed Three Kings. The hosts should be boosted by the return of former Football Fern Bridgette Armstrong – unavailable for the win over Papatoetoe – while Katie Rood’s goals will now be supplemented by those of Stephanie Skilton, who scored last week in her first game since returning from the United States.

Fencibles United vs Claudelands Rovers

Riverhills Park | Sunday 24 May | Kick-off: 1pm | Referee: Neil Tobin Assistant Referees: Alan Tobin, Kieran Withers

The respective seasons of these sides are almost mirror opposites with Claudelands having lost just once on their way to the top of the table and Fencibles winning just once to sit on the bottom. The hosts being able to mastermind a victory is therefore hard to envisage, especially as they no longer have the services of Rosie White and Betsy Hassett, who have both now jetted overseas with the Football Ferns. Rovers have the meanest defence in the league and are seldom going to be left wanting at the other end with the likes of Helen Collins, Tayla Christensen, Kate Loye and Bethany Witt around.

Western Springs vs Lynn-Avon United

Seddon Fields | Sunday 24 May | Kick-off: 1pm | Referee: Greg Woo Assistant Referees: Thomas Lee, Charles Nothnagel

Springs’ win over Three Kings has put them right in the mix for a title tilt and the club will be pleased at how new coach Richard Wilson has turned things around. They have already tripled last season’s win tally of two and are heavy favourites to add another three points here. Springs have an excellent defensive record while much of the attacking damage has been done by Rebecca Tegg, Lily-Rose Dyer and Lauren Mathis. Lynn-Avon have won two of their last three matches though so will be far from easy beats.

50 Years of Local Pride

Programme 2015

North Shore United vs Forrest Hill-Milford United

Allen Hill Stadium | Saturday 23 May | Kick-off: 12.30pm | Referee: Glen Lochrie Assistant Referees: Morgan Breuer, Wendy McNeely

This northern derby would always be a highlight for both clubs but it is taking on increased significance in this campaign due to the excellent form of the sides. Shore have put themselves in the box seat for a title push while Forrest Hill are also right in the promotion running in third. Reid Drake has been a revelation for Shore and scored again last weekend to take his tally to seven.

Mt Albert-Ponsonby vs Takapuna Anderson Park | Saturday 23 May | Kick-off: 2.45pm | Referee: Rajesh Kumar Assistant Referees: John Schipper, Brett Willis

After a poor start to the season, Mt Albert seemed to have recovered with an unbeaten run of three games but they reverted to type in the previous round by allowing Ngaruawahia to claim their first win. Like their opponents, Takapuna have earned just one victory so far and both teams will therefore see this as a good opportunity to claim another three points.

Hibiscus Coast vs Metro Stanmore Bay Park | Saturday 23 May | Kick-off: 2.45pm | Referee: Chris Casey Assistant Referees: Ravi Prasad, Kevin Turnock

These sides are tucked away in mid-table but their promotion prospects are far from being extinguished, particularly those of the Coasters, who are just five points off second place. Both teams are in need of a shot of confidence after posting losses last weekend, especially Metro as they have not won a game since the fifth round.

Waiuku vs Ngaruawahia United

Massey Park | Saturday 23 May | Kick-off: 3pm | Referee: Vaughan Couillault Assistant Referees: Mark Fleming, Torres Chang

The Ngaruawahia players will have had a spring in their step at training this week after finally claiming their first three-pointer with a 2-1 success over Mt Albert. The plan will be to use that as the foundation for a better run of form in the second half of the season and they will feel this trip to Waiuku, who have only won twice themselves, offers hope of consecutive victories.

Ellerslie vs Mangere United

Michaels Ave | Saturday 23 May | Kick-off: 6pm | Referee: Allan Wilson Assistant Referees: John Bennett, Paul Mason

Ellerslie will be wondering how they are down in fourth when they have been beaten only once and the answer seems to lie in the attacking side of their game. They have a goal difference of just eight – significantly less than the other teams in the top five – and need to start converting some of their draws into wins. Playing Mangere could help in that regard as they have one of the worst defensive records in the league and were beaten by previously winless Manurewa last weekend.

Tauranga City United vs Manurewa

Links Ave | Sunday 24 May | Kick-off: 2pm | Referee: Paul Shakes Assistant Referees: Andrew Lamberth, Peter Farrell

This fixture is unfortunate timing for Manurewa as they are fresh from their first win and would have wanted a good opportunity to make it back-to-back triumphs by facing a lower-half side at home. Their prospects do not look good as Tauranga are yet to lose on their own turf but Manurewa at least now have a goal scorer in the ranks after the signing of Gurjeet Singh, who found the net regularly for Hamilton Wanderers in the Premier League last season.

Lotto NRFL Division 1 Preview Round 10

Claudelands Rovers vs Onehunga Mangere United

Galloway Park | Saturday 23 May | Kick-off: 2.45pm | Referee: Andrew Lamberth Assistant Referees: Andrew McAllister, Sean Coon

The table does not make good reading for Onehunga after last weekend’s action when they came out on the wrong side of a real six-pointer against cellar dwellers Lynn-Avon. They are now just three points ahead of Lynn-Avon and need to go on a good run of form to drag themselves away from danger. Rovers are faring much better in mid-table but could also get sucked into a relegation fight.

Papakura City vs AFC Fury Murdoch Parkz | Saturday 23 May | Kick-off: 2.45pm | Referee: Steve Peeters Assistant Referees: Thomas Lee, Khalid El Gana

Everything fell into place for Papakura last weekend as they capitalised on Manukau’s first loss with a thrilling 4-3 win over promotion rivals Fencibles. They are now just a point behind Manukau and, with the leaders facing a tricky trip to North Force, a win for Papakura could see the south Aucklanders top the table. Fury will be a tough proposition though after putting six past Papatoetoe.

Papatoetoe vs Oratia United

Murdoch Park | Saturday 23 May | Kick-off: 2.45pm | Referee: Andy Holdsworth Assistant Referees: Chris Scott, Pat Barrett

Papatoetoe pulled off an excellent result a fortnight ago in upsetting Fencibles but were soon brought back down to earth in humbling fashion by Fury. Having shown what they’re capable of, coach Mark Holt will now be looking for his charges to show more consistency and he will feel they have a chance against an Oratia side with the worst defensive record in the top half.

Fencibles United vs Lynn-Avon United

Riverhills Park | Saturday 23 May | Kick-off: 2.45pm | Referee: Dimitry Sabitov Assistant Referees: Glenn Horne, Peter Caffell

The table would suggest Lynn-Avon have little chance of taking something from this encounter but they will be in buoyant mood after picking up their first win and will be heartened by the fact Fencibles conceded four goals at home last week. With no Lynn-Avon player having scored more than once though, it’s difficult to see where they will find the firepower needed for an upset.

Albany United vs Te Atatu

Rosedale Park | Saturday 23 May | Kick-off: 2.45pm | Referee: Gordon Campbell Assistant Referees: Cheyenne Shadanbaz, Neil Tobin

Te Atatu have flown under the radar somewhat in putting together an undefeated run – they have now not lost since round four. If their current form continues, they could even launch a bid for promotion so Albany have reason to be wary of the visitors here. There are no prizes for guessing what Albany’s main deficiency has been so far – their seven goals leave them sharing the mantle of the league’s least effective attack with Lynn-Avon.

North Force vs Manukau City

Kamo Sports Park | Sunday 24 May | Kick-off: 2.45pm | Referee: Jeremy Ferguson Assistant Referees: Charlie Tseng, Dave Doidge

The ability of Manukau to react to setbacks will be tested here for the first time after their surprise loss to Claudelands last weekend. Coach Ricky Espinoza will be hoping that was just a blip on a march that currently has them on track for the title and he will not be left wondering against a North Force side that has been beaten at home on only one occasion.
