Throughout Phase I and Phase II and now into Phase III the LOUIS staff hasreferred to “pre-processors” when discussing data conversion. So, just what is a“pre-processor”? The term “pre-processor” is probably not an industry standard, butit is a standard among the LOUIS staff. A “pre-processor” is a program written inSAS (a computer language) to manipulate data into a format that the NOTIS loaderprogram (LBC30) can accept. The manipulation that takes place is outlined in thework let ters agreed upon by the inst i tut ion.

Here are the number of pre-processors written for each institution’s data.

THE BEAUREGARD PROJECTby Vicki Reeves

Beauregard Parish Library has beenextremely busy since getting their LaNetconnection. The Beauregard Project, assome staff members call it, has involvedstaff members in activities ranging fromstart ing an Internet Users Group toinstalling equipment that allows dial-upaccess. Here is an explanation of someof our efforts .

IN-HOUSE USE - PATRONS:Beauregard Parish school librarians weretreated to the first official demonstrationof the Internet link on August 17. IkeStewart , one of our most support iveInternet users, gave an excellent intro-duction to Internet access under Win-dows. We also demonstrated Internetaccess by modem and through the WYSE150 terminals we use on our in housesystem. We are now allowing patrons toschedule t ime on the Windows system orto sign up for a training session. Walk-ins are welcomed as long as the systemhas not been reserved. Most are signingthe training session sheet and as ofSeptember 1, 100 patrons have requestedtraining!

Delta Kappa Gamma and DAR (Daugh-ters of the American Revolution) arescheduled for a demonstration andseveral other agencies have expressed aninterest in schedul ing demonstrat ionsand/or exploring co-operative ventures.Glen Reichley, a patron who assistedwith the modem testing, is the Communi-cations Officer for the Sheriff’s Officerand serves on the 9 11 Board. We aresearching for sites which may be of useto Law Enforcement and/or EmergencyManagement personnel to see if therewould be a rationale for a joint projectwith 911 or the Sheriff’s Office. As amember of Libraries Southwest, we arealso interested in exploring ways that we

can share resources with memberlibraries.

One of this week’s best internet referencequestions came from a staff member. Sheheard that her mobile home might have atype of pipe which was involved in aclass action suit. She wanted to know ifit was safe to drink the water. A quickLycos search for “class action suit”showed that her family was safe but, dueto the pipe’s tendency to leak, her carpetmight not be.

BEAUREGARD INTERNET USERSGROUP - We thought about adding ourB to LUI but BLUI sounds like animpolite comment made at the dinnertable! We held an organizational meetingof what we hope will be a local Internetusers group on September 7. Wedemonstrated the services now availableand asked for input from the users for ournext steps. The 32 people who did cometo the first meeting were enthusiasticabout helping define this library’s role intheir community. Several group mem-bers have volunteered to help research“freenet” type services which areoperating in other areas and to look at theresources we have here which would helpset up something similar. We are meetingagain in October to look at the resul ts .

Two recent intemet users have no plansto attend our Internet User’s Group.. . theywere passing through on a bike trip fromFlorida, saw a library and wanted tocheck their e-mail. The public’s vision ofthe library’s role in a community ischanging and it is exciting for us to havea part in the act ion.

MODEM LINES - On July 24 we begantesting the modem link which will allowour patrons to call in for Internet access. The five patrons who agreed to act as

guinea pigs logged over 172 calls duringthe 4 week test! We will publicize thislink at our first Internet meeting and willprobably begin to get complaints that ourone l ine is not enough!

LSCA GRANT APPLICATION - Weare currently working on an applicationfor a grant which would allow us topurchase the equipment, software,l icenses, training, etc, to house andmaintain a CD-ROM server. We plan tooffer access through the Internet and bymodem. The school system is interestedin having access to the server from eachof the schools in the parish. At a recentplanning session, they asked us to lookinto the possibility of including amaterials resource index so that schoollibraries could more easily share thematerials in their collections.

CHILDREN - Our Internet policy forchildren is being developed. At this pointwe are requiring a signature from theparent or legal guardian for users under18 indicating that the adult is aware thathe/she is responsible for any necessaryguidance. Our statement says that theresponsible adul t must a t tend a t rainingsession with the child and must remainwith the child when the child is using thecomputer. We anticipate working outexceptions so that parents who are fullyaware of the issues can sign for thechildren to come in and use the computeralone after the first few sessions. Sug-gestions are welcome!

ALL THIS ACTIVITY IS GREATBUT... finishing the setup must be a toppriority. We’re trying to get E-Mail setup now. Our next step will be to set up agopher menu and WWW page. We wantto provide access to our card catalog soonalso .

EUDORAONYOURLLNIN T E R N E T C O M P U T E Rby John Guilloty

Eudora is an e-mail program that auto-matically connects to your e-mailprovider’s server, retrieves your mail toyour PC, and presents i t to you throughfriendly windows. Once you’ve got youre-mail in Eudora, you can print it or saveit to a floppy disk and import into yourdocument on another PC runningWindows.

Where do I get it’? You can FTP Eudorafrom the FTP server that Sara Taffae setup just for this purpose-to provide theparish libraries with a single source ofInternet programs. If you attended theLaPLEASE II seminar then you alreadyare in-the-know.

But I thought the LOUIS crowd said wecan’t put new programs on our InternetPC; if we did, they wouldn’t support us!

ADVANCED TRAININGCLASSES HELD IN JULYby Caroly Coca

The Vista advanced training classes, heldin Plaquemine and Ruston on July 11 and12, were well-attended despite the lOO-degree heat, and went off smoothlydespite a couple of scary moments of“technical difficulties.” The trainingprovided a chance for Louisiana Vistausers to get together to discuss Vistaissues, successes and problems; askquest ions; and provide input to the Vis taand UMI representatives who flew in forthe occasion at no addit ional cost to theLouisiana Library Network.

Dan Ball and Ted Landry of the IbervilleParish Library in Plaquemine kindly lentus their facilities for the first class, andnever complained (or at least not to ourfaces!) when we completely rearrangedthe furni ture to sui t our t raining needs. They also provided us with much-neededcoffee to go with the doughnuts suppliedby UMI. Thirty-seven people attendedthis f i rs t c lass .

That was true until today. When weimplemented the Department of Educa-tion grant to provide ALL PARISHESWITH ACCESS TO THE INTERNET,we weren’t sure what kinds of problemswe were getting into. One way we keptproblems to a minimum was placing therestriction on the PC - we wouldsupport the PC as long as it was main-tained as we installed it. This partnershipworked very well : you got access to thelnternet and timely support from theLOUIS staff. The directors of severallibraries installed additional computersnetworked to the LLN PC so they couldadd additional software like Eudora andNetscape. The parish libraries that don’thave additional PCs, however, aregaining confidence using the Internet-and we don’t want to stand in anybody’sway. That’s why we’re opening thedoors to Eudora.

There are some technical limitations towhat you can put on your Internet PC.

After the Ibervil le class, the two vendorsand 1 drove up to Ruston to conduct thesame class again the next day at theLouisiana Tech University library. MikeDiCarlo was our gracious host, whokindly stayed after his regular work hoursto ensure that al l equipment was up andrunning, and he also provided coffee forthe group. Twenty-six people attended.

Gail Wanner, Acting Manager for Vista, flew in from Provo, Utah to conduct theclass. She took us though a series ofcommands that every Vista searchershould know, from simple commandssuch as how to do a search, to morecomplex commands, such as marking alist of records in order to print them byissuing the “ML” command. She alsodemonstrated upcoming features on Vista, such as the “download to disk” commandand the “download to e-mail” command(see the “Update on Vista Features”article).

Doug Peacock, representative for UMI,flew in from Ann Arbor, Michigan inorder to answer questions about thestructure of the UMI databases. He also

For example, your LLN PC doesn’t haveenough memory to run the latest versionof Netscape. You may purchase theadditional RAM and have it installed, butthen we (LOUIS) could no longer supportthe PC. On the other hand, the PC caneasily handle Eudora without the addi-tional memory and that’s why we willcontinue to support the PC even after youinstall Eudora. Another technicallimitation is that not all parish sites canuse Eudora. Parishes connected toNicholls or Northwestern can’t useEudora because those inst i tut ions don’tsupport POP (Post-Office Protocol).

We do expect the number of calls we getto increase and to help us continue tooffer you timely and friendly support,Sara Taffae has agreed to support yourquest ions about ins ta l l ing and usingEudora. She will also answer anyquest ions you have about hpw to FTPEudora to your computer. The LOUISstaff wil l take quest ions concerning theother appl icat ions on the PC.

A

talked about how UMI decides whetheror not to include an article in a database. For example, most articles which are aninch or less in length are excluded.

From feedback received during and afterthe classes, i t seems that several peopleappreciated the training sessions, andpicked up quite a few tips on how tobetter utilize the Vista product. GailWanner expressed an interest in returningsometime next year to conduct anotherclass... although after experiencing oursweltering Louisiana heat , she said shehoped the next class would NOT takeplace during the summertime!

My thanks to Gail and Doug who flew into train us, and to Dan, Ted, and Mike andthe library staffs at both the IbervilleParish library and at Louisiana Tech forhost ing these classes. Thanks also to al lof you who attended and part icipated, particularly those of you who had to drivelengthy distances to at tend!

LOUIS SYSTEM ADMINISTRATORS’ MEETING, NATCHITOCHES, LA, JULY 13- 14, 1995by Nancy Nuckles

System administrators from *all* LOUIS libraries, and directorsfrom some, met with LOUIS staff representatives at Northwest-ern State Universi ty to discuss and update each other on avariety of topics. This is just a brief summary of a few of them.

Southeastern and Delgado are receiving updates for Authorit iesfrom BNA. Southeastern has found the service to be extremelycost efficient when compared to what it would cost for them tomaintain the file themselves.

Seven institutions, and possibly three others, may write an 8Ggrant proposal to load government document records. They arestill trying to estimate the size of the loads in order to write theproposal .

LOUIS staff distributed instructions for logging on to TSO, anda list of the “on request” SAS jobs which LSU runs. CathySicard of the LOUIS staff would like to receive (by e-mail)requests from System Administrators for ‘as is’ jobs.

LOUIS plans to add the New Orleans Public Library (NOPL) tothe LOUIS menu with Grambling and UNC once NOPL has thesoftware installed to allow the 239.50 connection. Ameritech isreviewing the development of PacLoan and may start fromscratch, so it will be a while before LOUIS will be able topurchase i t .

Several s i tes have begun inquir ing about Acquisi t ions andSerials modules implementation. Although it is not necessary toimplement the Acquisitions at the beginning of a fiscal year, it isreally recommended so all your records for that fiscal year canbe in one system. It is easy, from the System Administratorspoint of view, to come up on Acquisi t ions because there is verylittle to set up in LSYS. Also, there are only a couple of batchprograms for LOUIS analysts to set up. The difficult part istraining staff to learn the order, fund, vendor, and invoicerecords. LSU and Southeastern have volunteered to train sites -probably in one training session either in Baton Rouge orHammond, or in conjunction with another LOUIS meeting orLaNUGM. Louisiana Tech, Northeast, and Shreveport areinterested in beginning Acquisitions in 1996.

Lisa and John from the LOUIS staff, and LSU’s MiddletonLibrary staff are working on WinPAC. It is a tool to migratefrom OPAC dumb terminals to microcomputers using Windowsand TCP/IP. Lisa has mailed copies of WinPAC to all Phase Iand I I ins t i tu t ions .

LSU has been checking serials in online for a couple of yearsand again is willing to share their expertise. Mike Somers,Deputy Technical Services Librarian, is willing to visit sites whowish to learn about entering holdings information and check-in.He can also explain LSU’s policy of checking in some titles onorder records, and others using the LSER module.

Ralph is negotiating contracts for Compendex and Inspec for thesix institutions which have schools of engineering (LSU,Southern, Louisiana Tech, McNeese, UNO, and USL). LOUISis reviewing how the grant was written and determining the mostefficient way to implement the project. LOUIS would like topurchase the databases directly from Silver Platter instead offrom NOTIS, and load the databases on Infoshare. NOTIS andSilver Platter still need to write a load program for Infoshare toload from tape instead of CD-ROM.

NOTIS LMS 6.0 is expected in general release in November orDecember for loading by January 1, the date OCLC plans tomove to Phase II of Format Integration. It is a technical release, mostly tag table changes for format integration; and a macro tocommand level CICS rewrite. It will probably not include anychanges to OPAC guide screens.

The release of Infoshare in production is Release 2.0. LOUIShas l imited access to Infoshare databases to the IP addresses forLOUIS/LLN libraries and Shaolong is working with Ameritechon the program which generates use stat is t ics .

The next release will be NOTIS LMS 6.2 - The Big Circ Rewriteformerly called 5.2. It is scheduled to go to general release in‘early winter’ and certainly by April. There is no 6.1. There arethree beta si tes and Ameritech may send out a copy of the betarelease to al l s i tes so they can preview the conversion programs.

The meeting was very well attended, and productive. UN0 hasgraciously volunteered to host the next meeting to be held onFebruary 1 and 2.

Some of the patrons are just so fascinated by the “vastness” of the entireprogram that they just spend time browsing. Since we are a small library, we canencourage this without it creating problems. At least, so far!

Sylvia Pennington will coordinate efforts to teach teachers how to utilize theInternet access they wil l hopefully be get t ing soon. Pennington showed the groupInternet addresses applicable to specific lesson plans. This demonstration is available toall schools in the parish. It makes a good staff development project and will helpteachers see what resources are available to them and to their students at the parishl ibrary.

Most of you are aware that NOTIS haspostponed release of 5.2 (now 6.2) untilnext Spring. As a result, many of thePhase I and II libraries who were waitingto implement circulation with thatrelease, have decided to forge ahead.

UNO, Northeast, McNeese, and Delgadoare working hard to bring up circulationwithin the next six months and otherlibraries are not far behind. I’d like tothank librarians and staff members atLSU, Southeastern, Tech, and Nichollsfor sharing their expertise, time, andpatience with both myself and otherPhase I and II staff. Without your help, this task would be much harder.

ACADEMIC VISTA USERS IN THE NEW ORLEANS AREA MEET AT UN0by Carolyn Coca

This past August 25, Vista users from LOUIS libraries in theNew Orleans area came to the University of New Orleans todiscuss how Vista is being implemented in their library, tobrainstorm ideas for increasing usage by patrons, and to discusstheir experiences with Vista. Some of the topics and issuesdiscussed included hardware and software being used for access, training possibilities, sign-up policies, ways to denote terminalsas having Vista access, and whether or not to charge for print-outs. The meeting was the brainchild of Bob Heriard, referencelibrarian at UNO, who realized that several LOUIS librarianswere interested in how UN0 is taking advantage of Vista accessby making it available on on its library local area network. Boband other librarians were also interested in how other librarieswere implementing Vista access.

The following is a run-down on how those who were in atten-dance are currently implementing (or are planning to implement)

Vista: University of New Orleans: UN0 has a Novell 3.1.2Local Area Network with ten workstations. Four of these LANworkstat ions have access not only to the CD-ROMs available onthe LAN server, but also to Vista. In order to access Vista, UN0uses Kermit software, version 3.1.1, to telnet to Vista andautomatically provide the logon id and password. Theseworkstations also utilize a “Clipper” menu as a front end to all ofthe selections (both Internet and CD-ROM databases). There isno print server on the LAN, but some of the PC’s have printersattached directly to them. UN0 is currently considering itsoptions for denoting which terminal has access to which data-bases, and implementing fair sign-up policies for patron accessto the worksta t ions .

Louisiana State University: LSU has a similar LAN set-up toUNO, but the twenty-workstation LAN is currently being usedfor CD-ROM access only. For access to Internet applicationssuch as Vista, LSU has f ive workstat ions set up: these accessVista, World Wide Web, and Carl. These five are used tremen-dously, especially for Web Surfers, and the LSU staff is consid-ering its options for managing these resources. In addition, anyLSU student can get a “Tiger account.” With a Tiger logon id

ALA CONFERENCE IN CHICAGOby John Guillory

Ralph Boe, Zehra Zamin, Carolyn Coca, John Guillory, andNancy Nuckles attended this year’s American Library Associa-tion conference in Chicago (June 23-28).

Many of this year’s sessions and presentations concerned accessand use of the Internet and online library services. Ralphpresented an overview of LALINC, LOUIS, and LLN to a groupof about 150 people concerned with resource-sharing in aconsortium environment. He also met with Neal Kaske, U.S.Department of Education, and a group of university representa-

and password, LSU students are able to dial into the LSU UNIXmachine from a PC at home and choose Vista as one of theoptions on the Tiger menu. The Tiger system automatically logsthe student into Vista. With this new method of Vista access, theStaff at the LSU Libraries is responding with a more aggressive

User Education program. Delgado Community College: At thiswriting, Delgado is working to provide Vista access to its librarypatrons. It can currently be accessed only by staff. Delgado hasordered three workstations to be used solely for Vista access, andhopes to soon have these available for i ts l ibrary patrons.Meanwhile, Delgado has five workstations which it currentlyuses for Internet access and two CD-ROM stat ions.

Southern University in New Orleans: SUN0 is now concentrat-ing its efforts on becoming automated on the NOTIS system, which it expects to join in October. SUN0 currently has tenstand-alone workstations with access to CD-ROMs, with printersattached to each. Because Internet access is not yet available tothe SUN0 library, SUN0 cannot offer Vista access to its patronsor to its staff. SUN0 hopes to be wired for Internet access soon, however. SUN0 also hopes to increase its staff in manydepartments such as Serials, Cataloging, and its third floor.Nunez Community College: Nunez, like SUNO, is also concen-trating its automation efforts on becoming a LOUIS library. They also are waiting to acquire Internet access so that they canoffer Vista to their patrons. Internet access is available on otherparts of the Nunez campus, and the library hopes to be wiredsoon. Nunez does have some CD-ROM workstations, which arenot networked. They are currently considering their options forVista access for when they are connected.. .possibly usingWindows.

The meeting was a successful forum for learning more aboutVista and the creative ways librarians are implementing access toit in their libraries. The highly coveted “Vista-innovator award”for the month goes to Bob Heriard at UN0 for his idea to havethis meeting, and also for get t ing the part icipants together andhosting it! Anyone in North Louisiana getting any ideas????
