In closing, I would like to share that after 33 years in education, I am retiring at the end

of June. Working in education has been immensely rewarding and I have greatly

appreciated my five years at Louise Arbour French Immersion. It has been a privilege to

work with all of you and see this school evolve from its beginning days to the amazing

school that it is today. We have come so far together from basics such as selection of

school mascot, school colours, and design of our playground space, to excellence in

academics, sports and the arts! I am grateful for having had the opportunity to meet

amazing students, incredibly dedicated staff and wonderfully supportive and engaged

families. All the very best to each of you.

It is my pleasure to welcome our incoming principal, Mme Cianci. She is joining us from

Ryerson PS. I know that she will thoroughly enjoy her upcoming placement at Louise

Arbour FI.

Enjoy June as it will no doubt fly by! Learning is, of course, first and foremost our

focus-along with special year end celebrations and special activities.

News from our Library……

The Library Learning Commons has been quite the hub of activity for the past few weeks!

We finished up Poetry Month in April with a wonderful Poetry Reception for the winners the first week of May. Our young poets read their poems before a large group of family members and fellow poets. Afterwards we enjoyed cake, fruit and juice. Great job to winners and all the students who submitted poems!

The next day, our Spring Scholastic Book Fair started! Our Student Crew from Grades 6 to 8 helped out tremendously - from hanging posters, distributing flyers, and decorating the LLC to helping out at the book fair itself. It was a chance for students to show leadership and responsibility and they sure came through! As well, our amazing group of parents volunteered so much of their time setting up the book fair, manning the cash, and helping students which helped make the book fair the huge success that it was! We sold over $6,100 worth of items which resulted in over $4,000 worth of books for the LLC. Way to go les Loups!

For the next month, we’ll be focussing on Summer Reading. The librarian from the Beacock Branch of the London Public Library will be coming to our school on May 31st and June 6th to talk to our Grade 1-4 students about the Summer Reading Program at the library. Teachers will be sending library card applications home this week. If your child does not yet have a library card with the public library, you can fill out the application and the librarian will bring your child’s card to the school on one of her visits. All free!

June is also my last month as your Teacher-Librarian as our beloved Mme Allen returns in September. I want to thank all the students, parents, teachers, administration and staff for a wonderful six months here. You have a beautiful library and an amazing school.

All the best,

Mme Nash-Brault

IN OTHER NEWS……

Congratulations on the grade 8 graduation of your child! We hope that their

transition to Secondary School is a very enjoyable experience.

As you prepare for this transition we would like to make you aware that one of the prerequisites to Secondary graduation is for your child to have acquired 40 volunteer hours. Although the last year of Secondary school is years away, it is very beneficial to begin completing these volunteer hours immediately. Many students leave this task to the last couple of years of school and find it challenging to fulfill this commitment and do not realize that they can begin collecting these volunteer hours the summer they leave grade 8. Please review the attached brochure and community involvement form for more information and suggestions on volunteer activities and encourage your child to start volunteering this summer.

If you have any questions please contact your child’s Secondary School or myself for assistance. Sincerely, Connie Cordes Principal

Home Connections

in Mathematics

Mathematizing the Beach

So much of a student’s success in math is based their ability to develop personal benchmarks and use those benchmarks to estimate measurement in school and the world around them. A personal benchmark is a physical reference for a unit of measure. For example, the width of your pinky finger is about a centimetre. It must be gained through experience! Once students have a sense of personal benchmarks they can use these benchmarks to estimate. Parents can help students develop these benchmarks within everyday contexts by asking questions like: Do I have enough sugar to make cookies? Will this wrapping paper cover the box? Will my car fit into the parking space?

Let’s illustrate how you might help your child develop personal benchmarks using the

example of a trip to the beach.

How long do you think it will take us to get to the beach?

What increments of time are key for kids? Do they have a sense of a minute, 15 minutes, half an hour or an hour? We take it for granted that children have this sense. Car rides are a great opportunity for children to get a better

sense of time.

What do you think is the temperature today?

If children know that water freezes at 0 degrees Celsius and it boils at 100 degrees Celsius can they estimate the

temperature on a “hot” day? Did you know that “burning hot” sand can be 50 degrees

Celsius?

How much water will this container hold? How much does it weigh?

A really important benchmark connection is that a litre of water has a mass of one kilogram. Once a child has made this connection there are many opportunities to

explore them at the beach. For example:

● How many litres of water will fill your pail?

● What is the mass of the pail? ● Can you find something with a mass of

one kilogram?

How long is a kilometre?

The beach provides an ideal opportunity to develop a personal benchmark for a kilometre. You could use an app on your phone to keep track of distance. Pick a visual marker as a

start point, walk a kilometre, and then look

back! We did it!

So the next time you are planning on heading to the beach - use the opportunity to help your

child build personal benchmarks.

On rainy days, try some of the activities at the
