Semester Overview

Integral ElementsMy work tends to be quite minimal in how it looks, and I like to create work that feels clean and modern. The process I go through is similar for each project, beginning with research, then initial ideas and development before moving on to the final piece. I have a high attention to detail and like to keep organised and to deadlines. I work best to a shorter deadline as I don’t have as much time to over think things, therefore I make more impulsive and bolder decisions. I enjoy editorial and branding projects the most so have focused on those for this semester of work.

SuccessMy strengths lie in my attention to detail and the fact that I work well to deadlines. I think this semester has been my most successful and I think I have been bolder in my choices, and therefore my confidence has grown. As with previous semesters, I think that my back up work is the most succesful of projects, but feel that the choices I make for my final pieces have improved. The branding project that I enjoyed the most was Name Knots, as I enjoyed the making of a physical object and the photography involved. I think the most successful editorial piece is the collection book. I really enjoyed the photography aspect of this book, and creating and editing my own images. I think it is more varied to the other booklets in how I dealt with body copy and layout.

PersonalityI enjoy photography and I feel I have been able incorporate more of my own photography work in the projects I have chosen this semester. I am an obsessively clean and organised person and I think this is reflected in the work I produce, as well as in the way that I approach and complete a project. I feel that I have narrowed down the areas of design that I am most interested in, so hope to continue to work in branding and editorial. I hope to get some experience in a job in York or Leeds, before travelling next year and working abroad in Australia for around a year.

Gen II

Gen II is a training centre in Cumbria, UK. The company has run for ten years on the same logo so required a rebrand. There were three main areas that the company targets - corporate, apprenticeships and higher education. Therefore as the centre trains people of all ages it had to be modern yet accessible. The logo I created was chosen to continue on to the second stage of the competition, being narrowed down to the final 6.

This was a brief that was set by the university in a previous year, in which the FSC annual report required updating. The colours used link to the logo, and the format is similar throughout to link from start to finish. The images are all edited to look similar in colour and brightness, and the text is coloured and set similarly on each spread. The audience would be mainly corporate and employees.

Watermark is an information booklet to be handed out at a poetry festival in Cumbria. This was a live brief run alongside the journalism students at the university. The aim was to incorporate large amounts of text in an interesting and eye catching format. The theme that runs throughout aims to make it flow by adding colour and shape to the images and text. The audience would be the people attending the festival with interests in the poetry and literature.

Collection is a book to showcase a collection of old tea cards. This was a brief from a previous years ISTD competition. The idea was to show a sample of pages that are themed to the card subjects, yet link them as a whole piece. The focus is on the imagery, yet plays on the design of the cards themselves to incorporate text. The book is printed on cartridge paper to give it more texture and to enhance the feel and interaction. The target audience would be collectors of the cards and people with a general interest in tea cards.

This was a one day brief set to design a poster and invite for the end of year degree shows at the University of Cumbria. The brief was to design a few variations to fit to certain specifications such as fonts, images and textures. The target audience would be wide as it wants to attract the general public as well as people interested and working in the industry.

Typefactory is an old ISTD brief from 2009. The idea was to create branding for a new type museum, including choosing a location and building to hold it. The target audience was the general public with the intention to make it interesting for everyone, including people in the design industry.

GameChange is a training company which needed rebranding. This was a brief that I started on work placement, and decided to continue it as a day brief. The aim was to keep it simple and easy to use across the various training platforms. The main audience would be a variety of businesses and their employees.

Name Knots is a business that creates personalised handmade bracelets. The branding needed to reflect this and to be cheap enough to reproduce for a small start up company. The target audience is mainly females of a younger age range, around 10-20 years old, however there have been a few sales to 20+ year old females as well as to males.

This is a booklet I designed to hold my third year dissertation. Its focus is on art therapy, and the layout had to be able to hold the large amounts of copy. The design is aimed to reflect and showcase the text and the audience that this would attract, so needed to be simple and not overpower. The target audience would be people working in and around the subject, as well as other people researching and trying to understand the basics of art therapy.

This is a sample of the projects that I worked on whilst on work experience at York Print Company in York. Over two weeks in April, I worked on various projects and each had a different brief and target audience.
