This is an exciting time at Lourdes Senior Community as we continue to fulfill our vision to Ensure Our Legacy for Future Generations.

With spring just around the corner, Lourdes is busy preparing for Easter, the celebration of new life we have in the death and resurrection of Jesus Christ. You are most welcome to join us for Mass and other services during Holy Week. You can find a schedule for each of our facilities at www.lourdesseniorcommunity.org.

Resurrection is the ultimate expression of God’s love and mercy. Pope Francis has declared this in a year of mercy. As we celebrate this Jubilee Year, we reflect on what mercy means and how it is expressed.

In December we began our Year of Mercy celebration. Each month, residents, family, staff and visitors have opportunities to reflect on a different component of faith. Pastoral Care

Director, Sister Teresita Lipar, OP, joins with residents and families as they focus on the corporal and spiritual works of mercy through study groups, area pilgrimages and prayer devotions. So far this year, we have reflected on mercy as hope, harmony, family love, and works of miracles.

On pages two and four you will find a synopsis on Sister Teresita’s ministry and the devotions taking place at Fox Manor. You will read about story-time and resident accounts of faith and miracles.

In addition to the spiritual life of the residents of Lourdes, there are many other activities enriching the lives of residents. This issue of The Continuum features some of them – Restorative Exercise, Stretch and Ball Toss, and Senior Theater, among others. And as this issue shows, in the Dominican spirit of joy, there are always plenty of parties at Lourdes to celebrate holidays and events.

Lourdes is a holy place, sustained by your prayers and support. Your commitment to our mission makes it possible for Lourdes to be the best senior living experience anywhere. Please know of my personal gratitude. May God continue to bless you for your kind care as we walk together in serving God and our residents.

Blessings,

Sister Maureen Comer, OPChief Executive Officer

What’S NeW...JubILee yeaR of meRCy On December 8, 2015, Pope Francis inaugurated the Holy Jubilee Year of Mercy. The Year of Mercy is an open invitation to all people to: ponder, receive, practice and demonstrate the Mercy of God. While mercy should be a concept we all consider daily, the Year of Mercy will run through November 20, 2016.

Here at Lourdes Senior Community, we are excited to take part in this Holy event. Throughout each of Lourdes four senior living homes, residents are finding ways to engage in Corporal Works of Mercy. Our blueprint for such an undertaking includes tasks such as: feed the hungry; visit the sick; and give drink to the thirsty. But these acts do not stand alone. Spiritual Works of Mercy are just as important. As such, residents, families, and staff are encouraged to ponder the concept behind the following ideas:

• Counsel the Doubtful• Instruct the Truthful• Admonish the Sinner• Comfort the Sorrowful• Forgive Injuries• Bear Wrongs Patiently• Pray for the Living and the Dead. These works are opportunities to be the heart of God among all people and are love in action. By entering into another’s physical and emotional areas of pain, the heart extends love, gracing them with dignity and the presence of Jesus. Love builds bridges, connecting us to each other and the Lord. When we engage in acts of Mercy, those around us may receive the truth that God loves. God cares and desires each person’s needs to be known and met. At Lourdes Senior Community, residents have implemented these practices in several ways. First, pictorially. At the entrance of each of our resident homes, you will find posters and banners, depicting demonstrations of Mercy. Holy cards are also available with a Mercy Prayer for any who are interested. Residents at Mendelson Assisted Living have formed a study group

to discuss scripture and parallel documents given by Pope Francis in the book, “The Holy Year of Mercy: A Faith-Sharing Guide.” They are looking for practical ways to practice the Mercy of God in their daily lives. Eventually, Sister Teresita Lipar, OP plans to implement this study throughout the rest of the Lourdes Community. A group of Fox Manor residents participated in a pilgrimage and prayer afternoon visiting the Holy Door at the Dominican Sisters of Peace Convent in Oxford. While there, they celebrated with mass and enjoyed refreshments as well as the sisters’ loving hospitality. The Sunday Liturgy at Fox Manor also fosters the theme of Mercy through the international Holy Year song, “Misericordes Sicut Pater - Hymn for the Year of Mercy,” and seminarians visit each facility comforting the sick and those in need. The Year of Mercy is a blessing to us all, bringing healing and restoration to both the practicer and the recipient. Join us by reaching out to those you see in need around you, trusting that God will use others to meet your needs as well.

For many of us, passing along religious beliefs and values to the next generation is just as important as passing along financial wealth and tangible assets. Estate planning creates many opportunities to do this, including:

End-of-Life Care ~ An Advance Directive lets you name an individual to make medical decisions for you in the event you cannot make them yourself. This can be someone who shares your faith and values about end-of-life issues, or someone who will honor your wishes as a legal representative. In either case, it is a good idea to provide written instructions about things like organ donation, pain medication (some may want to remain conscious at the end of life), and hospice arrangement. A visit by your priest, or other member of clergy, may also be desired.

Funeral and Burial Arrangements ~ Faith can influence views on burial or cremation. Faith may also influence certain details in a funeral or memorial service. Some people pre-plan their services and include a list of people to notify (which can be helpful for a grieving family). Some even pre-pay for the funeral and burial plots to prevent their loved ones from overspending out of grief and/or guilt.

Distributions to Children and Grandchildren ~ Taking the time to plan how assets are left to family members lets them know how much they are loved, and is another way to convey faith values. For example, providing for the religious education of children and/or grandchildren speaks volumes. Individuals with children may select someone who shares their religious views to manage the inheritance and eliminate any questions about distribution during an already difficult time.

Charitable Giving ~ Giving to others who are less fortunate or to organizations that have impacted or supported your faith is also commonplace. Making final distributions to your church, university, hospital and other favorite causes will convey the value of charitable giving to family members.

Transferring faith and values to family members is best done over time, by letting them see your faith at work in your life, taking them to religious services, and letting them see you being charitable. But it’s never too late. Talk to your family while you can. Explain what your faith means to you and how it has helped you through difficult moments in your life. Sharing your faith and how you wish your spirituality to be part of your legacy is part of our commitment to God. Your family, your church, and professionals versed in the manner in which you wish to make this expression are all part of your spiritual community. Reach out to all of them. With communication and sharing, comes peace.

Residents at Fox Manor always enjoy a good story. So much so that they have created a special activity each month catered to story-time. The program began six months ago and has continued to be a popular event. A group of eight to twelve residents meet once every couple weeks, to share stories and meaningful conversation. “Most of the time, we try to look for inspirational stories,” said Activity Director, Tammy Keeley. The story selection process is a collaborative effort between herself and Fox resident, Roger Rice. They take turns reading and Roger often contributes background information pertaining to the story details. Part of the appeal for this activity is the relatability. After reading a short story titled “Saint Christopher’s Protection,” the resident’s discussed their own experience with perceived miracles.

Each person is comprised of a body, soul and spirit. When any of those parts malfunction, there is trouble. Cognizant of this premise, each member of the staff at Lourdes Senior Community tries to be sensitive to the physical, psychological and spiritual needs of each of the residents. Staff have grown in their awareness of their resident’s needs by fine-tuning their spiritual eyes and hearts to recognize which part is calling for more attention and how that attention will impact their dispositions. They know that doctors, nurses and Certified Nurse Assistants treat their physical needs through medicine and exercise. Psychologists treat their minds and concerns through therapy and discussion. The Spiritual Care Assistants help God to treat the spiritual needs of

the residents through the Word of God, spiritual visits, prayer, and provided participation in the sacraments. One’s health depends on their readiness to receive treatment in all of these areas. Lourdes prides itself on its ability to provide for each one of these needs. As such, we are pleased to announce that we will be initiating a new program called Mass for Fellowship. Throughout the year, residents will have the opportunity to attend Mass at a local parish. Transportation will be arranged and a reception will follow for an opportunity for fellowship. We look forward to witnessing God’s work and His many blessings as we embark on this new path.

For Mary Kay Pierce, there is no greater example of God’s divine intervention than her grandson’s miraculous healing. At the age of fourteen months, he contracted meningitis. He wasn’t expected to survive, but after much prayer and meditation, her grandson was cured. Later, the family was told he would be blind and deaf. Both his hearing and sight were restored, and today her grandson is healthy, living a normal life. Likewise, Carl Mauro recalled a time he was on his death bed. His mother watched over him, praying without ceasing. He attributes his recovery to those prayers, believing he wouldn’t be here without them. The stories chosen not only inspire, but remind the residents that they are not alone, God is with them and that miracles happen every day. “How do you prove it? It’s a matter of faith,” said Carl.

Lord Jesus Christ,

You have taught us to be merciful like the heavenly Father, and have told us that whoever sees you sees Him. Show us your face and we will be saved.

Your loving gaze freed Zacchaeus and Matthew from being enslaved by money; the adultresses and Magdalene from seeking happiness only in created things; made Peter weep after his betrayal, and assured Paradise to the repentant thief. Let us hear, as if addressed to each one of us, the words that you spoke to the Samaritan woman: “If you knew the gift of God!”

You are the visible face of the invisible Father, of the God who manifests his power above all by foregiveness and mercy: let the Church be your visible face in the world, its Lord risen and glorified. You willed that your ministers would also be clothed in weakness in order that they may feel compassion for those in ignorance and error: let everyone who approaches them feel sought after, loved and forgiven by God.

Send your Spirit and consecrate every one of us with its anointing, so that the Jubilee of Mercy may be a year of grace from the Lord, and your Church, with renewed enthusiasm, may bring good news to the poor, proclaim liberty to captives and the oppressed, and restore sight to the blind.

We ask this through the intercession of Mary, Mother of Mercy, you who lives and reigns with the Father and the Holy Spirit for ever and ever.Amen.

Residents and staff at Lourdes always keep others in their prayers. If you would like to request prayers for special intentions, please e-mail Elisha Christopher at [email protected]. The requests will be placed in our book of intentions and remembered at all Masses.

Mendelson Home put on their first Senior Theater performance last October 16. Together with Activities Director Deana Wiegand and her assistant, Lexi Boyd, twelve residents joined together to bring the classic fairy tale of Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs to life. “This was a first-time experience. We’ve talked about doing role playing, but we’ve never done this,” said Deana. “I didn’t have any expectations. I figured, we’ll just have fun and do some acting and see how it goes. And it ended up taking off huge.” Senior Theater began in August when Activities Assistant, Lexi Boyd, introduced the idea. Having a background in drama and dance, Lexi saw the opportunity to share her passion. The concept was to create an environment where residents could be creative and express themselves freely.

“I think it’s [Senior Theater] really stimulating, helps with memory and is therapeutic,” said Lexi. Residents gathered once a week and the cast was picked by interest and personality. “We started off just with the dwarfs as numbers. Then as they started rehearsing, their personalities started coming out and it was easier to pick a role,” said Lexi. “Mary (Nassar) is always falling asleep so she made the perfect Sleepy. And Ed (Czapor) couldn’t stop smiling. He was Happy,” said Patti Bean (Snow White). Pauline Drouillard, once a school teacher, was assigned the part of Doc. “She kept everyone on task,” said Patti. The performance night brought in a full house, surprising the entire cast. “We had a good turn out,” said Ray Bean (Prince Charming). “I was supposed to walk up front and by the

time I had to go up, I couldn’t get through the aisle.” While most of the cast only took part in the acting, Mr. Ray Bean helped with costumes and sets. He hung the curtains and cut fabric to make belts for the dwarfs. While he admits they didn’t have a lot to work with, he attributes their success to Lexi’s creative abilities as director. “We’re just glad Lexi has a lot of patience,” added Patti, laughing. Senior Theater will continue to meet throughout the winter, to the delight of the cast members. They hope to have more laughs while inspiring others to join. “I think there’s a lot of people here who would want to do this,” said Patti. Lexi Boyd already has a few ideas for the next production, which they hope to perform in the spring.

StRetChING aND baLL toSS Stretching and Ball Toss is a regular activity at Clausen Manor, with residents enjoying music and recreation, planned by Clausen’s Activity Director, Melissa Sexton. “The goal is to get exercise and do a group activity,” said Melissa. A large ball is tossed back and forth, while Johnny Cash plays in the background. A few residents sway with the music, smiling each time they catch the ball. “We try to keep a routine, but it’s flexible,” added Melissa. “We go with what they can do each day.” Ball toss is a resident favorite, and the games vary based on group mood and capability. They utilize different balls of various sizes and textures. Occasionally, they even play basketball. A change in music transitions the residents between activities. Everyone cools down while stretching. They take slow deep breaths, lift their legs and

rotate their ankles, then lift their arms and stretch left and right, while Sexton asks questions about the day and other events. “We like to do mind jogging,” said Melissa. “It helps them engage. So we do mental exercises that are easy and in their muscle memory.”

Such exercises include reciting the ABCs or counting out the days of the month. “Mostly we just have fun,” said Melissa.

Restorative Exercise meets three days a week at Lourdes Rehabilitation and Healthcare Center. Residents gather together for an hour of physical recreation, imagination and laughter. “Our goal is to keep strength and flexibility, but it’s also to have fun,” said Christine Moore, Activities Assistant at Lourdes Rehab and Healthcare Center. Activities such as balloon toss and kickball are among the group favorites. However, Restorative Exercise isn’t only a physical workout. Residents stay mentally

sharp by incorporating imagination and storytelling into their exercise routine.

“We take imaginary walks through the woods, or row a boat across the lake to get their arms and legs working,” said Christine. The make-believe component helps keep the residents engaged. “What do you see?” asks Christine. The responses vary. Residents stop to smell flowers or pet a deer. Dan Doss even sings the tune “Row, Row Your Boat” as he picks up his imaginary oars. The possibilities are endless, and with this group, there is no telling where their next adventure will lead.

Flora (Ann) Waldera, Frank Dewdney, and Betty Bloom stretch to music during restorative exercise.

thaNk you, DoNoRS! We asked and you provided, and because of your generous support, we were able to purchase two wonderful musical additions. Our grand piano is a perfect fit for the new fireside lounge at Lourdes Rehabilitation and Healthcare Center. This player piano provides soothing background music for a multitude of activities and events.

Likewise, Mendelson is enjoying their new upright piano. Stationed in the lobby, families and guests are able to entertain and take pleasure in familiar tunes. Both player pianos were purchased at Steinway Piano Gallery and have an iPad programmed with over 10,000 songs. From Christmas Carols to Frank Sinatra to Elvis Presley, there’s no limit to music style or genre. Through your support we are able to continue providing quality services and amenities. Thank you.

It may not be summer yet, but that’s not keeping the residents at Lourdes Rehabilitation and Healthcare Center down. Blasting the music from their tropical soundtrack, they’re all smiles as Activities Director, Jacqui Baker, and her assistant, Christine Moore, prepare the Happy Hour festivities. Hawaiian ice cream sundaes and pina coladas are on the menu, a delicious afternoon treat for this luau. Residents choose from pineapple, coconut, whipped cream, and cherry toppings, and Betty Bloom can’t get enough.

Happy Hour is enjoyed the last Friday of every month and the residents are very involved in the process. “They tell us what they want to do,” says Jacqui. The residents vote for everything. Golfers will play the challenging “New” course in beautiful surroundings and enjoy a world-class clubhouse and dining room. Indianwood dates back to the 1920s, and its “Old” course has been the site of three major championships, the 1989 and 1994 women’s U.S. Open and 2012 men’s U.S. Senior Open. It also hosted one of the top professional events, the 1930 men’s Western Open. More than $50,000 was raised

last year through golf and the silent auction, emceed again by dedicated Lourdes supporter Steve Garagiola, news anchor at WDIV-TV. Check-in and continental breakfast begin at 8:30 a.m., and the shotgun start is at 9:30 a.m. Lunch is served, and dinner and live auction follow golf. The registration fee is $225 per golfer. In addition, sponsorship opportunities are available by contacting Elisha Christopher at 248.886.5673 or [email protected].
