Love Blooms Wedding & Event Design: Guide to Choosing Wedding Flowers Lillies, dahlias, peonies and more…I don’t know about you, but I could spend all day staring at
sweet bouquets and floral centerpieces! Lucky for me, summer wedding season is rapidly
approaching —meaning there’s bound to be plenty of gorgeous blooms to go around! But, even if
you’re a flower fanatic (like me), choosing wedding flowers to complement your wedding day in
every way can be a bit daunting, especially with so many stunning varieties to choose from.
Fortunately, we’ve got you covered! For the latest installment of our guest blogger series, we’ve
enlisted the talented Katrina Allen, Wedding and Event Planner (not to mention flower
extraordinare!) at Love Blooms Wedding & Event Design for her guide to choosing wedding
flowers!
1. Where do you recommend couples start when trying to decide what floral elements best
fit their wedding vision?
When looking for inspiration for your wedding flowers, it’s important to clearly define what “look”
you’re going for. Sometimes, that makes the selection process easier, rather than having a
specific flower in mind. Research is very important, as well. One of the best — and most fun —
guides out there is Pinterest! It’s such a great way to get ideas and themes for your florals. Keep
an open mind while researching and, of course, have fun!
2. What factors should couples keep in mind when it comes to season?
Much like deciding your preferred style and look, season is extremely important to flower
selection. Some flowers, like peonies, are so popular, but they have a very small window of
opportunity (usually in early spring throughout the summer). However, there are a lot of flowers
that are easily attainable and available in most seasons — hydrangeas, roses and calla lilies, to
name a few.
3. What tips do you have for couples when it comes to choosing colors for their flower
arrangements?
I always recommend they select a color that will easily stand out against their attire, while also
complementing the wedding party’s attire. For instance, if the bridesmaids are wearing eggplant
purple, they can carry white flowers, while the bride carries deep purple blooms. I also think it’s
great when couples use different shades of their wedding color scheme in their floral
arrangements. It creates texture!
4. Moving on to bouquets, everyone’s favorite wedding floral arrangement! What
recommendations or advice do you have for brides when it comes to crafting a bouquet
that’s just right?
Research, research, research! Here’s a tip — head over to Google and type in your preferred
color scheme. Chances are, you’ll get a variety of results showcasing the ways your wedding
theme and color scheme go together, which will ultimately play into what bouquet arrangement
you choose. Whether you’re going for vintage vibe or a feminine, romantic look, hitting the
Internet and doing a little preliminary research will help you work with your florist to determine the
best arrangement for you.
5. Last but not least: Summer wedding season is rapidly approaching! Do you have any
floral-related tips for brides who are planning summer weddings?
Believe it or not, but white flowers don’t typically take to heat well! Amidst the humidity and
temperature, flowers are much more apt to wilt during the day, causing them to take on a wilted
color. Dahlias, on the other hand, are in season during the summertime and make gorgeous —
and affordable — arrangements. Plus, they come in a lot of different yummy colors, which is a
bonus! Also, if you have a little bit of time during the day, a quick snip of the stems will help your
flowers re-hydrate more quickly in water, keeping them fresh and lovely for the rest of the day!
