A SEASON OF PRAYER for JUNE
Pray for our Nation and Leaders, Pray for our Church and our leaders DAILY Come join us on Thursday morning at 10AM for a time of prayer. You are encouraged to spend time in communication with God. Feel free to use the Prayer room (165) at any time, individually or as a group to pray about whatever is on your heart.
Father’s Day Memories… My dad wasn’t perfect. I’m the fourth of five kids, and my older brother and sister will tell you that he got better at being a dad by the time me and my younger brother showed up. I try to convince them it was because me and my younger brother were so much easier to parent. (lol) I’m sure that’s never been the case. As I was preparing for my monthly newsletter article, I knew that I wanted to share something about Father’s Day. I was searching the internet for the perfect “Father” story. I found some that were humorous, and some that were inspirational, and some that were sad. After weighing all of them, I decided to just share some of the things that make me smile I learned from Dad grow-ing up.
Fishing at the “Quarry” pond in Huntsville (watch for snakes while you fish)
Frog gigging in the “Mud” pond in Boynton Beach
Driftboat fishing out in the ocean (he even taught me how to gamble in the “pool” for the biggest fish)
Shooting frogs with the new BB gun (mom wasn’t supposed to know about that one, which made it even more fun)
Setting crab traps
Emptying crab traps (there is a point to be careful with this)
Cleaning crabs (more of a chore than a lesson, but boy they sure are good in gumbo)
Soft Shell crabs and floundering by lantern at night
Learning the difference between a flounder and a sting ray
How to drive a boat
How to build a fort (and how writer’s cramp will keep you from burning down said fort—not enough room for that story)
Arm wrestling and arm punches (this one was quite fun but, notably, sounds abusive—I promise it wasn’t)
How to build the Golden Gate Bridge out of toothpicks (this one was only topped by my sister’s story of how to make a human skeleton for science class out of turkey bones and piano wire.)
How to whistle
How to sing in church
How to love Mom in front of the kids without being gross (OK, maybe a little gross)
How to say “Yes Sir,” “No Sir,” “Yes, Ma’am,” and “No Ma’am.”
How to never talk back to Mom
How to crunch ice after dinner (Donna is REALLY appreciative of this one)
How to work until the job is done
How to laugh around the dinner table (ask me sometime about the greenbean shooting out my brother’s nose)
My dad taught me a lot of things that I may not have noticed or appreciated at the time. Over time, and now that I am a Dad, Husband, and even Grandfather, there are so many things I’ve remembered that far outweigh his imperfections. For everyone who can relate, I encourage you to remember your Fathers this year in light of the things he taught you that make you a better person. Remember the things that make you smile and laugh. Many of you know me as a pretty “corny” joke teller. You can thank my dad. If your Dad is still around, tell them that, hug them, and cherish your years with them. Miss you Dad. See Ya’ Sunday Allen G.
