Love God and Neighbour Last week’s Gospel was about the Herodians and Pharisees trying to trap Jesus

in a question about paying tax to Caesar. A similar theme is continued in today’s

Gospel reading. Jesus always spoke with wisdom and authority. Therefore it was

hard to subdue him in debates. When the Pharisees heard that the Sadducees failed

to silence Jesus, they wanted to have a go. This time the question is about the

depth of knowledge Jesus has. “Which is the greatest commandment?” They are

quizzing him whether he can adequately explain 613 precepts of Jewish religion.

Jesus answers by quoting verses from Deuteronomy and Leviticus. “You must

love the Lord your God with all your heart, with all your soul, and with all your

mind.” Then quickly Jesus adds another quote from Leviticus to it; “You must

love your neighbour as yourself”. Jesus went on to say, “on these two

commandments hang all law and prophets.” Yes for Jesus, there are two

dimensions to religious life—loving God and loving neighbour. This is also

fundamental to Christian living. Therefore I use this scripture passage for infant

baptisms.

While the Jewish people of Jesus’ time were engrossed in rituals and

prayers of expressing their love for God, they were lacking in their expression of

love for their neighbour. In our time, the scenario is different. We live in a

humanitarian society, where people are very eager help others in need as often as

possible. Didn’t we see opposition politicians questioning the government in

Parliament about their apparent lack of commitment to help fight Ebola epidemic?

Thank God for this sense of reaching out to the needy which comes natural to us.

So we are not doing badly when it comes to loving our neighbour.

But when it comes to loving God, I don’t think we can claim similar

responses. Our sense of religiosity seems to be limited to humanism. If we love

God we need to express our love for God. If we love God we will be keen to

communicate with him constantly. Our personal prayers are ways of

communicating with God. Time we spend with the Bible, the Word of God, is a

conversation with God. But there is a unique way to communicate with God,

which is a gift to us from Jesus. Not many other religions have such a gift.

Eucharist is a unique way we communicate with God by taking Jesus into our

selves and becoming part of the Body of Christ. The most effective way of

communicating with God is the Holy Communion.

Eucharist and Holy Communion is so important that we would say,

‘Eucharist is the source and summit of our religious life.’ Pope Emeritus Benedict

XVI said that there cannot be a Church without Eucharist. The very definition of

Church is ‘the faithful gathering together to do the Eucharist as Jesus commanded

his disciples’.

Our love for our neighbours is also more than a naïve approach to charity.

It involves political will to uphold the dignity of all human beings. It involves

collective approach to root out radicalism and corruption. It involves working for

the welfare of all humanity. Therefore we should take pride in becoming part of

the church’s social commitments through the Society of St Vincent de Paul,

Charitable Work Fund, Project Compassion, Mission Appeal etc. The Christmas

Luncheon is a special effort of our parish to reach out especially to the lonely who

would feel left out while rest of the world around them are celebrating Christmas.

Our love for God and our neighbour together make us religious Christians.

Building and Maintenance The water leak from the roof of St Peter Chanel Church is fixed now. But there are some more

things to be fixed. The windows of SPC needs remedial work to get rid of the rust and fix the broken glass

panels. The whole church, including the windows need painting. A wheel chair ramp in front of the church

is a necessity. The Sanctuary (Altar Area) of the church is now at different levels making the movements

awkward and proper use of the space difficult. Therefore the level of the floor around the Altar needs to

extend to the boundary of the Sanctuary. One of the two confessionals is proposed to be converted into a

Divine Mercy shrine where the Statue of the patron saint, Peter Chanel, also could be housed. Fr Don

Richardson, Director of the Liturgy Office inspected the church and endorsed the proposals.

Another requirement for the parish is a dedicated office space which will also include fireproof

Archival Room for the registers and documents of the parish. The concept plan also include a meeting room

for Consultative Bodies like Pastoral Council, Finance Committee, Liturgy Committee etc. Drawn Plans of

this building was made available on demand earlier in the year for interested parishioners to peruse.

Now we have started to prepare a formal application to the Archbishop’s office for approval.

Supporting documents for the application includes 10 Financial Projection and a Ten year maintenance

Plan. So far we have engaged architect Graeme Butler, ADN Managing Consultants, and James Van Schie

from the Parish Assistance Service to prepare documents and the Application. I also have spoken with

bishop Terrence Brady about the project and he will be consulted again before the application is presented

to the bishop. Before approving the work the bishop will meet with his own consulters. After receiving the

approval of the bishop we will be seeking Approval from Auburn City Council and inviting quotations for

the work.

The estimated cost of the project is $700,000, which includes $500,000 for the Parish Office

construction. The accumulated funds of the parish is $570,000. To execute the project in its entirety, we will

have to find another 130,000. With the Parish working together, we should be able to increase the income,

and for the rest we will have to apply for a loan.

Feasts of the Week.

28 October - St Simon & St Jude Simon "the Less" is also called "the

Canaanite" and "the Zealot". Jude "(son) of James" (Luke 6:16; Acts 1:13) was

traditionally thought to be the same person as Jude, brother of James and author of

the letter of Jude, but may also be the one called "Thaddeus" (Matthew 10:3; Mark

3:18). A tradition has Simon and Jude preaching and being martyred in Persia.

Honoured among the twelve apostles, the first followers of Christ.

1 November - All Saints This feast began in the East to commemorate all

martyrs and was progressively adopted in the West. Celebrated on this day in the

eighth century and soon widely observed. Honoured today are all holy men and

women in glory with Christ: known or unknown, mighty or lowly, all whose lives

were modelled on the Beatitudes and on the great commandment of love.

2 November - All Souls The Commemoration of all the Faithful Departed

This day of commemoration began early in the Middle Ages with annual prayers for

the dead in monastic communities. Fixed on this day, it spread more widely after the

tenth century and now ranks with the principal feast days in the liturgical calendar.

Commonly known as All Souls, it expresses Christian faith in the communion of saints

and our need to pray for one another in the Church, especially those souls in purgatory

"who have been buried in their human imperfection".

5.00pm Saturday Vigil Mass, 8.00am and 10.00am Sunday Masses on 1 and 2 November are

dedicated to the Feast of All Souls.
