Advent is Still At Work The first interim I did was at Zion Lutheran in Stockton. I enjoyed the drive back and forth on I-5. Watching crops grow, harvested, and replanted deep-ened my connection with scripture stories of crops and valleys. In the winter I drove in the dark morning and evening. I saw farms in the distance with Christmas lights that made me smile as they shined a welcome in the dark.

Spring returned and drifted toward summer. One week I noticed people cleaning the sides of the highway for about a ten-mile stretch. Each day more bulging black bags appeared showing the work that had occurred that day. The next week the people were gone, but the bags remained. The next week the bags were still there, some a little tattered looking. Soon the neglected bags had ripped and scattered their contents back along the sides of the highway. The bags themselves became a hazard as they floated among traffic, causing cars to swerve. I saw them trapped in trees, bushes, and occasionally the front of a car.

I thought, “What a waste!!! Picking up the trash and putting it in the bag wasn’t the end of the work. No one followed up to make sure the work continued with the gathering of the bags. Without the follow up the work served no purpose.”

Advent has done a lot of work this year. With the Mission Site Profile in the process of being completed I don’t want us to think that we’ve bagged the project and move on, leaving the neatly bagged work on the side of our journey. This is not downtime for Advent!!!

We need to continue to pray for God’s guidance and direction. The Spirit is still working to move us into mission and our eyes should be looking for the op-portunities presented to us.

There continue to be areas of growth that I hope to be able to lead at Ad-vent. Communication and process are two of the areas I’d like us to examine as we move toward new pastoral leadership.

Even though the summer feels slow, God’s work continues! Keep Advent in your prayers!

Well, here goes… My time as Advent’s President is nearing its end. I have served our God and all of this “Wonderful Congregation” for two years now. I have one year left as a member of your church council but termed out as President.

I cannot even begin to explain what my time as President has meant to me. I have gained an immense amount of Spiritual Understanding. Your support and prayers for our church and our God throughout these two years has been absolutely overwhelming to me. Our changing vision of what and who we are as God’s people here at Advent and in Citrus Heights has been remarkable.

Greetings Advent family!

Lately, Advent’s Council and staff have been dealing with issues regarding home-less campers on our property. Although we invite all people to participate in Advent’s activities, we have had to ask homeless people to leave or have called the police to have them removed when they are “living” on our property. Jesus has made it clear, we have a responsibility to tend to and care for those who are less fortunate. We are to comfort and assist those who are in need. We recognize our Christian duty. Yet we also recognize the challenges of balancing care and accountability, balancing the compassion and love of Jesus with our fiscal responsibility and safety of those participating in Advent’s activities..

Current Council President Bob Mathews has initiated contact with the Citrus

Heights Police to explore our property and make suggestions on safety measures

Advent can undertake. Bob is also bringing the topic of joint cooperation with

Ascension Lutheran and Christ the King Lutheran to find ways of sharing safety

features, or possibly hiring a private security company to patrol our respective

properties during the late afternoon and evenings. Even as council members

transition on and off for the year, the discussion of safety measures will continue.

These issues of homeless people utilizing our property with garbage left behind

has been around long before our involvement in Winter Sanctuary. As with

almost every church and business in the area, we are seeing an increase in this

situation. In some cases we have directly experienced threatening situations.

The Sunrise Christian Food Ministry “Food Closet” serves many needy folks on a

daily basis and we are so blessed to be witness to it—I am so proud of this being

on our campus! Our participation in the Winter Sanctuary was successful last

winter, and I hope we do it every year. This is seed support for greater

opportunities down the road. For now, we can only do so much with the

resources at hand. In the meantime, we are currently reaching out to the

community at large and serving our Advent family with our many programs.

Advent family, we would ask for your continued prayers for guidance as we seek

equitable solutions to these issues for both ourselves and our neighbors. We

would ask please do not confront individuals alone. They may feel threatened

and understandably respond accordingly. If you see something you feel needs to

be addressed contact the Citrus Heights Police, either at 911 or at their police

non-emergency number 727-5500. The police are logging the complaints and

issues to better refine their response planning. They are better equipped to

handle whatever happens and appreciate our calling them so they can reach out

with resources where appropriate.

With God's help, working together with the Citrus Heights community and our

faith partners we will find the way to live our love of Christ.

The View From The Pew

This One is For You, Dad! by Judy M. Zimmerman

Recently I re-read Dad's book -- memoirs of his navy career. After 17 years of sailing around the world, it must have been hard for him to finally settle down and become a family man. Dad had also been an outstanding athlete and, no doubt, he hoped to have a son who would share his sporting interests. Unfortunately, I turned out to be clumsy and un-athletic, the oldest of three daughters. The only outdoor pursuit Dad and I enjoyed together was an occasional fishing trip, something that became his greatest source of pleasure in retirement. When I grew up and left home to become a world traveler, however, it was evident I had inherited Dad's stamina and strength, along with his love of

outdoor adventure. On one occasion, my physical limits were put to the test during a six-week journey in East Africa. Tracking gorillas in Zaire and traversing the Northwest Territory of Kenya by camel and on foot offered sufficient proof that I was physically fit at 50. But, the joy of these challenges paled in comparison on the morning I went fishing. Before dawn, in Kenya’s Masai Mara, I rendezvoused with the dashing bush pilot of a four-seater Cessna at the airstrip near Little Governor's tented camp. As we flew low over the dense, raw terrain I watched life begin to stir in the occasional circle of shambas (camp huts) below. Our spectacular 40-minute wilderness flight ended at the shore of Lake Victoria, world's second largest freshwater lake and source of the River Nile. A delicious breakfast of fresh orange juice and fishcakes awaited us at Rusinga Island Fish Camp. Over the last cup of coffee, the young captain of our 16-foot boat announced, "If you hook a big one, it's all yours!"

"The Tilapia here make a fine tasting meal," he said, "but we want Nile Perch. They look and behave very much like a big-mouth bass." Soon we reached a "hole where the big ones are biting”. The first one got away from one of the other two passengers in the boat. When the next hit came, I grabbed the rod and yelled, "This one's mine." The high-pitched whine of the line leaving my reel went on and on and on. I knew it was something gigantic. "Keep the line tight. Reel in only when you CAN’T feel the fish pulling away from the boat," yelled the guide. He was almost as excited as I the first time the fish jumped. It must be the big-gest bass in the whole world! I began to drip with sweat and breathe deeply, but the captain never touched the line. He just kept telling me how great I was doing. "The end is surely near," I thought. But my fish was not willing to surrender yet. Near the side of the boat, he jumped again, glared, then turned and raced for open water. When the pain began to gnaw along my entire right side, I leaned way back with the strength of my left thigh, and steadily moved with him around to the other side of the boat. I was exhausted. "Is it possible this fish can pull me overboard? Shouldn't I be strapped down?" Suddenly, I knew I was going to win. "This one's for you, Dad," I whispered. "You'll be so proud." In the heated struggle, I lost all track of time. My three companions said it took 40 minutes to land him, all 167 pounds. Hanging on the scale, the Nile Perch dwarfed me, but only in size. That morning, I felt bigger inside, much younger, and more important than I could remember feeling in a long time. And why not? After all, I was the world's best fisher-daughter. Two weeks before he died, I gave Dad my framed Rusinga Island Fishing certificate with a picture of our fish for his 85th birthday. Judging from his broad grin, it must have been the best gift ever. He asked me to tell him the story over and over again.

Advent’s 2017 Campout

This year we are going to another new place for our outdoor adventure

Fallen Leaf Lake National Forest Campground, South Lake Tahoe

- just north of the main "Y" intersection where Hwy 50 intersects Hwy 89, - near Camp Richardson, the Tallac Historic Site and the Taylor Creek National Forest Visitor Center

Dates: Thursday, Aug 17 – Sunday, Aug 20

5 of our Advent camper families have already reserved individual sites for this year's Campout. Since 4 of these reservations are for RVs (motor homes, and trailers) we have extra space for tent campers to share these sites and to park extra cars at the larger RV sites. The extra cost for RV campers already having paid reservations will be $5 per person for Sat’s BBQ. For new tent campers the cost will be $15.00 per person (age 13 & up), $25.00 per couple or $30.00 per family for 2 or 3 nights camping and Saturday night’s BBQ. Unfortunately, since this campground charges $7 for every extra vehicle (beyond the 1st RV or tow vehicle & trailer), new tent campers making reservation thru the Fellowship Committee will need to pay this cost directly to the registration office at the time of arrival. In consideration that the normal campout coordinators, Keith & Joyce Montag, are on extended travels abroad until the weekend immediately prior to this year's event, please contact either Curt Lipp, 723-5154 or Tony Bubba, 965-3776 to answer any questions or to reserve a tenting site. We are moving to 2000 Center St. . . We will soon say goodbye to this mountaintop campus. We expect 200 people . . . for the decommissioning of the campus and the ensuing walk/drive down the hill to our new digs. We welcome your prayers for blessing and organization (as they move the school to a downtown location) and what promises to be a bit of holy chaos. Rev. vital services across the lifespan for more than 125 years. We currently provide money management services, case management in transitional and

Sacramento, San Francisco, Contra Costa and San Joaquin counties. We also sstand ready to offer long-term recovery services for victims of earthquakes,

Citrus Heights HART (Homeless Assistance Resource Team) We want to reach out and thank you for your generous donation of $130 . . . Your gift has allowed us to continue to aid homeless individuals and families, local veterans and our at-risk population. . . HART is a volunteer-run community effort established to assist our homeless and at risk residents. Our two most recent events included: 2017 Winter Sanctuary Program and the 2017 Stand Down (event assisting veterans). Both events helped over 200 homeless and veterans in need, ranging from 18 to 70 years, in the C.H. area.
