MUSEUM EXPANSION OPEN HOUSESWould you like to help shape the future of the Museum? Since our expansion in 1992 Loveland has grown from 38,500 to 75,000. We can no longer meet demands for exhibit space, classes, programs and events. And our building limitations prevent us from acquiring loans for exhibits.

To better understand the community’s needs and expectations, a number of stakeholders were interviewed earlier this year. This critical feedback, combined with the observed experiences of Museum visitors, developed a picture of the limitations of the current building.

Their valuable observations were a good beginning, but we would like your opinions. What would you like to see in your Museum? Do you like our ideas? Is there something we’re missing?

We invite you to join us for two Open Houses in January. Information on dates and times can be found on page 11. Please help us plan the future. We want your ideas!

EXHIBIT CATALOGUESIGNING WITHRICHARD SCHILLINGFriday, February 10, 6 – 8 pmRichard Schilling will sign exhibit catalogues and his newly released books featuring watercolor sketches created during his world travels. These special edition sketchbooks are limited in quantity and only availble while supplies last.

This retrospective exhibit includes more than 100 works of art including watercolor, oil, pastel and ink drawings, wood sculpture, a display of sketchbooks, and diary entries from artistic journeys and charitable associations. Seen together, these components form a narrative of a life defined by art, the love of nature, and the value of service to those in need. From Africa to the prairies of Nebraska, Schilling captured his encounters through beautifully wrought sketchbooks and impressionistic landscapes.

Dr. Richard Schilling was born and raised in Nebraska and earned his bachelor’s and doctorate of dental surgery degrees from the University of Nebraska-Lincoln. Now retired from dentistry, Dr. Schilling is a lifelong artist. He has authored several articles and books about painting and sketching, including Portraits of the Prairie (University of Nebraska Press, 2011) and Watercolor Journeys, (North Light Books, 2003). Schilling has exhibited in solo and group exhibitions in Nebraska, New York, Texas, and Northern Colorado.

6 Loveland Museum Art Exhibits

This exhibit explores the history of water use and conservation issues as seen through artworks by Margaret K. Haydon. Through scientific-based inquiry and research, Haydon employs various display motifs, combining classical sculptural forms with the organic shapes of the natural world, that highlight the impact of the developed world’s perspective and use of water upon the environment, specifically that of the sturgeon and its habitat.

With this exhibit, visitors can explore a variety of conceptual subthemes ranging from the aesthetic aspects of water to those focusing on global warming, water politics, environmental justice, sustainability, and ecological water conservation efforts. Haydon’s porcelain sculptures create a direct link to the historic nature of water usage along the Front Range, and in highlighting our long history of use and misuse, direct attention to a pattern of potentially damaging perspectives that affect our natural resources.

MARGARET K. HAYDON: CIRCLINGA HISTORY AS ART EXHIBIT

ARTIST TALK AND CLOSING RECEPTIONWith Margaret K. HaydonFriday, April 14, 5:30 pm Margaret Haydon has been addressing environmental ideas through her visual art since 2005 when she was invited to install a solo exhibition at the White Sturgeon Art Gallery in Vancouver, Washington. Since that time, the sturgeon, an endangered northern hemisphere species, has been a central image in her work. As an indicator species, the health of sturgeon tells us a lot about the general health of a given riparian and marine system and the impact that changes such as damming, recreational use, over fishing, bank enhancement, and pollution can have.

LIVING SAINTS:PHOTOGRAPHS BY ALEX HARRIS

On view through February 5, 2017FOOTE GALLERY

The art of devotional objects is explored with a series of color photographs by Alex Harris from the collection of the Colorado Springs Fine Arts Center. In 1972, Harris made a rural Hispanic village high in the Sangre de Cristo Mountains his home and spent 20 years documenting the lives and culture of this Hispanic region. This series of

photographs uncovers the many ways sacred images permeate everyday life and how they are intrinsic to the life of a community.

GREEN ROOM GALLERY The art of Santos (painted and

carved images of saints) is rooted in a 400 year old artistic tradition, and was originally intended to be

used as a teaching tool by Catholic missionaries. As with any tradition,

it is an ever-emerging art form, influenced by the movement of

people, the growth of communities, and artistic explorations.

AWAYAN INSTALLATION BY HEATHER FORTIN RUBALDFebruary 18 – April 30, 2017GREEN ROOM GALLERY Exhibit Celebration: Friday, March 10Lecture by the artist: 6 pmPublic Reception 7 – 9 pm

When something gets discarded, where does it go? Not “away,” but in a landfill for years to come, with untold impact upon the environment. Loveland artist Heather Fortin Rubald adapts a process to re-use plastic bags as beautiful and functional works of art. In this exhibit, Heather uses this process to create a forest-like, immersive environment, taking visitors on a journey through a lovely tree-lined space. This delightful experience challenges people to consider the nature of our disposable world, to find value in the re-imagining of cast-off material, and to reflect on the kind of future we want for our children and our planet.

ARTIST TALKWith Heather Fortin RubaldFriday, March 10, 6 pm Heather Fortin Rubald has always enjoyed working with her hands and making something out of nothing- or what most people would consider nothing. For a variety of reasons, post-consumer plastic bags have eclipsed all other art media for her. The need to create and experiment, save money by not purchasing pricey art supplies, and her mother’s words all contributed to her desire to take something wasteful and turn it into something beautiful and functional. In this talk, Heather will talk about her process of experimentation and the calling she feels to work with the media of plastic bags. She estimates that in the last five years, she has single-handedly kept 50,000 bags out of the landfill. Her Museum installation used another 6,000-10,000 bags.

SPRING GIFT BOXES WORKSHOPWith Heather Fortin RubaldThursday, March 23, 5 – 7 pm$50 ($40 for Museum Members) Advance Registration RequiredPost-consumer plastic bags are the choice media for artist Heather Fortin Rubald. Over the years, Heather has discovered that these bags are an iconic piece of everyday living and differ greatly in regards to logos, colors, and functionality. Heather keeps plastic bags out of landfills by creating stunning hand-crafted handbags and other products with function and fashion. In this workshop, she will show students how to design and fuse fabric from post-consumer plastic bags and then shape it into mini origami "take-out" style boxes that are just right for small treats or special gifts.

DREAMING IN COLOR:PAINTINGS BY MARY A. SHIVERS

February 25 – April 16, 2017FOOTE GALLERY

Opening Reception: Friday March 10, 2017, 7 – 8:30 pm

Mary Shivers presents a series of paintings that place recognizable images in otherworldly context using layers of color and ambiguous settings, highlighting the depth of her design skill and use of perspective. Loveland artist

Shivers paints animals and human figures, elongated and upended, that burst outward from a multi-colored, dreamlike landscape. Her synthesis of jagged edges and smooth organic forms creates an unexpected visual

unity within her compositions, leaving viewers both invigorated by their energy and soothed by a beautiful balance of color and form.

The Elders

This sextet has developed a reputation for high-spirited live shows and for fostering a deep sense of community with their audiences. Their music draws from traditional Celtic fiddle tunes, American folk, rock, and bluegrass while creating story lines with vibrant narratives of history, legends, true-life experiences, and tall tales. With one foot in the past and one in the future, lead singer Ian Byrne, a native of Ireland, along with founding members, Brent Hoad, Norman Dahlor, Stephen Phillips, and relative new-comers, Kian Byrne and Diana Ladio, instinctively carry their genre of music forward with integrity and grace.
