Pet market – UK & China

• In 2012 MTW Research estimates that sales of pet clothing will top £30m for the first time, hitting £35m by 2015

• The Chinese pet products market is forecast to reach value sales of US$616 million in 2010, an increase of 54.3% over the 2005-2010 period. However, the annual rate of real growth is forecast to decelerate from 3.8% to 2.3% between 2009 and 2010. Rising levels of affluence and changing attitudes to pet ownership have been the main factors driving this growth. Between 2004 and 2009, the proportion of Chinese households with annual disposable income of US$10,000 (in purchasing power parity terms) doubled, from 19% to 38.5%, while the proportion of households with annual disposable income of US$25,000 (in PPP terms) nearly trebled, from 3.7% to 9.7%.
