Sister Mary is providing essential care to women and children Deep in the heart of Uganda, bringing life into the world is often fraught with danger. Evas was 23 years old when she lost her baby boy. Going into labour, her only option to reach the nearest health facility was to ride on the back of a motorbike. Filled with intense fear, Evas’ dream of becoming a mother soon became her worst nightmare. The two-hour journey proved too much, and tragically, two days later, her baby boy was gone. Sister Mary Goretti, a Daughter of Mary, has been running the St Luke Bujuni Health Centre for the past two years. Being the most affordable health centre with a maternity ward in the region, St Luke’s has seen an influx of high risk pregnancies among the many expectant mothers. Sister Mary and her staff are all trained medical professionals, working tirelessly to provide for the many women and children facing dire situations. Yet they are vastly under-resourced. Sister Mary knows that tragedies, like Evas’, can be avoided.
