This certificate provides the formal training requiredas part of a student's employment within anImproving Access to Psychological Therapies(IAPT) service. Students on this programme willsecure a placement working as a traineePsychological Wellbeing Practitioner (PWP)delivering low intensity cognitive behaviouralinterventions

 Degree summary 

Trainees on this programme will gain the knowledge necessary forproviding low intensity interventions for clients with mild to moderatedepression and anxiety in their primary healthcare work setting, togetherwith the clinical skills essential to assess and engage clients, and todeliver interventions within a guided self-help model.

// The UCL programme is run and taught by experienced practitionersin the field, and therefore a balance is achieved between theteaching of the theoretical knowledge needed and the practical skillsnecessary in training as a Psychological Wellbeing Practitioner(PWP).

// Students will receive employment and practical experience in anImproving Access to Psychological Therapies Service alongside thisformal training needed in order to become a qualified PsychologicalWellbeing Practitioner.

The programme is delivered through a combination of lectures,workshops, skills practice, clinical seminar skills groups, directedreading and e-learning. Assessments are through a combination ofwritten and oral assignments. Written assignments include anexamination, a case report and reflective accounts. Oral assignmentsare role-play client sessions and supervision sessions.

 Degree structure 

Mode: Part-time: 7-9 months

Location: London, Bloomsbury

Students undertake modules to the value of 60 credits. The programmeconsists of three core modules (20 credits each) which are based on theRichards and Whyte (2011) Reach Out National Curriculum for LowIntensity Interventions.

 Your career 

The Postgraduate Certificate is the formal training required as part of thestudent's employment as an IAPT Psychological Wellbeing Practitioner.Trainee PWPs are appointed at band 4 and upon successful completionof the programme will move to being qualified PWPs. It is anticipatedthat trainees will stay in these positions after completing the programme,working as a qualified PWP in an IAPT service.

Options for career development include progression to senior PWPpositions, or moving into related fields such as IAPT high intensitytherapy, teaching, social work and clinical psychology.

 Entry requirements 

Normally a minimum of a second-class Bachelor's degree from a UKuniversity or a qualification of an equivalent standard. Relevant practicalor work experience will be taken into account.

English language proficiency level

If your education has not been conducted in the English language, youwill be expected to demonstrate evidence of an adequate level ofEnglish proficiency.

The level of English language proficiency for this programme is: Good.

Fees for this programme are available on request from thedepartment.

Training course fees on this programme are fully funded by the NHS.In addition, trainees will receive a salary from the London IAPTservice where they undertake their 4-day a week placement over theyear of the programme. This is likely to be a full time NHS band 4 orequivalent salary, as in previous years, but will not be finalised untilJune/July. Shortlisted candidates will be informed of the agreedsalary on offer of interview.
