Harmonics increase the KVA burden on transformers and generators. The higher the harmonic distortion, the higher the true rms current and KVA demand. Arteche Low Pass Harmonic Filters will help you to get the most out of existing transformers and generators. By reducing harmonic current distortion to negligible levels, current and KVA demand of existing loads are reduced, freeing up electrical system capacity. Standards: Type LPF Harmonic Filters meet the intent and requirements of IEEE-519, IEEE-1531, UL-508 and the CE Low Voltage Directive.

Mitigate Harmonics, Improve Total Power Factor and Meet IEEE-519!

Reduce transformer and motor temperature = Extend equipment life Reduce true rms and peak current = Eliminate disruptions caused by nuisance fuse and circuit breaker operation Reduce KVA demand = More power available from existing p power sources Reduce facility power loss = Energy cost savings Eliminate equipment interference = Improve equipment operation Improve total power factor = Reduce KVA consumption Improve productivity and profits!

Harmonic distortion reduces the total power factor, causes energy efficiency to suffer and thus reduces the available capacity of power sources such as transformers, generators and circuit conductors. As the percentage of non-linear load, connected to a transformer increases, the available KVA capacity decreases. Arteche LPF harmonic filters help to maximize the usable capacity of your power sources.

Current Distortion

ARTECHE standard Low Pass Harmonic Filters (designated as type KS) achieve full load input current distortion of 5% THD-i or less for six-pulse diode rectifiers. They can maintain distortion as low as 5% for the entire load range (0% to 100% load). The chart below illustrates filter performance, based upon circuit impedance and load conditions.

ARTECHE standard Low Pass Harmonic Filters (designated as Type KS) achieve input voltage distortion less than 2.25% THD-V, for six-pulse diode type rectifiers, for all load conditions (0% to 100%), with effective source impedance of 0.25% to 5%. Background voltage distortion, caused by other loads on the system may add to this level. Voltage Distortion vs. Impedance Total harmonic voltage distortion will be lowest for systems with low source impedance as demonstrated by the filter performance curves. Effective impedance (%Zeff) refers to the total source impedance relative to the actual load, as opposed to simple nameplate impedance values. A 500KVA transformer with 5% impedance, relative to a 50kVA load, has an effective impedance of 1%.

Current Distortion vs. Impedance Systems with high effective impedance (%Zeff), will have lower current distortion than a filter/drive applied on a low impedance (stiff) power source. This is demonstrated by the set of performance curves below. Effective impedance (%Zeff) refers to the total source impedance relative to the actual load, as opposed to simple nameplate impedance values. For example, a 500KVA transformer and rated 5% impedance, when considered relative to a 50kVA load, has an effective impedance of 1%. Effects of Unbalanced Line Voltage The existence of unbalanced line voltage can cause non-characteristic harmonics on the electrical system and will increase the residual total harmonic current distortion above the predicted values. Additionally, triplen harmonics (multiples of 3) which are normally not present in balanced three phase systems, may appear in unbalanced systems, adding to the residual harmonic current distortion. For best overall performance, the user should make every effort to balance the three line voltages.

Harmonic Spectrum Actual harmonic spectrum for a 6-pulse drive (VFD), operating at full load, and having an effective source impedance of 1% relative to the drive KVA rating. LPF filter reduced harmonic current distortion from about 75% to less than 5%.

Three Stages of Harmonic Filtering Our standard Low Pass Harmonic Filters (Type KS) offer three stages of filtering that nearly eliminate the harmonics commonly produced by three phase equipment using six pulse rectifiers. Our LPF filter is intended for adjustable speed drives, uninterruptible power supplies, and other rectifier controls, with any source impedance. 1) Input Stage The purpose of this stage is to isolate the LPF from other harmonics sources connected to the same power source and to prevent power system resonance. This stage also protects the load and filter capacitors against transients.

2) Output Stage The output stage contains a precise amount of impedance that minimizes the amount of harmonics produced by the load. It also reduces the harmonic burden placed on the shunt stage, and prevents resonance between the shunt stage and the load. 3) Shunt Stage The shunt stage absorbs residual harmonics remaining after both the input and output stages have played their roles in reducing load harmonics. Our basic three stage filter design achieves the lowest possible harmonic distortion levels while preventing power system resonance.

Your Choice of Two Filter Types

1. Standard Version Filters KS

Our standard Low Pass Harmonic Filter (Type KS) includes all three filter stages and achieves <5% THD-I (Total Harmonic Current Distortion) at virtually any load condition, when used in combination with a six pulse diode rectifier. It can also be used with phase controlled (SCR) rectifiers with excellent results. Our Standard (Type KS) Filter achieves 5% THD-I for VFD’s operating under any load condition and with any source impedance

Economical Solutions to Any Distortion Limit

The basic Low Pass Harmonic Filter (Type KB) includes two stages of filtering and takes advantage of pre-existing circuit inductance which may be in the form of either AC or DC reactors. It can also be used without external AC or DC reactors for those cases where the current distortion limit is above 5%. When the load (6-pulse diode rectifier) includes AC or DC reactors, Type KB filters will typically achieve distortion levels as low as 5% to 8% THD-i. Without additional AC or DC inductance, Type KB filters will achieve 8-12% THD-i.

Product Specifications

Proprietary Reactor Design Reactors have a major influence over the performance of harmonic filters. Optimum performance of any harmonic filter demands accurate and balanced phase to phase inductance in all three reactor coils. Reactors used in ARTECHE filters have inductance balanced within 3% between all three phases. Our reactors utilize PolyGapTM core construction which strategically distributes the air gap into numerous tiny air gaps placed at precise locations within the core. The Poly-GapTM core construction achieves balanced phase inductance with negligible air gap (fringing) losses and virtually eliminates stray magnetic flux. Reactors used as part of the shunt stage include a temperature switch that may be used to send an alarm in the event the filter has been overloaded. Reactors used in Type LPF filters have been type tested with actual harmonic currents and are UL/CUL component recognized.

Exclusive Capacitor Design Capacitors are at the heart of any harmonic filter. With traditional filters, capacitors have been considered the weak link in a filter. ARTECHE capacitors are specially designed and constructed for harmonic filter applications. They are designed with a physical geometry that optimizes the dissipation of internal heat and achieves the lowest possible internal temperature. Although our capacitors are designed for operation at temperatures up to 85 degrees Celsius, the normal operating temperature of our Type LPF filters is much lower (typically 40C-60C) resulting in life expectancy as high as 1,000,000 hours of operation (at 40C). Capacitors used in ARTECHE Type LPF filters are UL/CUL component recognized.

Type LPF filters are suitable for use with one or more 6-pulse type variable frequency drives (VFDs). Type LPF filters are not intended for use with linear loads (such as across-the-line started motors).

For variable torque applications: (Fans and pumps operated by variable frequency drives): Determine the total load (VFD) horsepower or KW rating. Select the appropriate filter based on the variable frequency drive (VFD) HP/KW and then confirm the total rated current is within the filter maximum current rating.

For constant torque applications (Non—fan and pump applications): Determine the maximum current requirement. Select the appropriate filter based on the maximum required current in amperes. Example: a 100HP, 480V, 124FLA drive, to be operated temporarily at 130% current requires a filter rated for at least 161 amps (use LPF 0125 480 KS).

For other applications: Consult factory for DC drive applications, other types of rectifiers, 50Hz ratings, single phase drives, other voltage ratings and higher load ratings. Consult factory for any other ratings or styles.

Type LPF filters are suitable for use with one or more 6-pulse type variable frequency drives (VFDs). LPF filters are not intended for use with linear loads (such as across-the-line started motors).

For variable torque applications (Fans and pumps operated by variable frequency drives): Determine the total load (VFD) horsepower or KW rating. Select the appropriate filter based on the variable frequency drive (VFD) HP/KW and then confirm the total rated current is within the filter full load current rating. Full Load Amps refers to the filter fundamental current rating.

For constant torque applications (Non—fan and pump applications): Determine the maximum current requirement. Select the appropriate filter based on the maximum required current in amperes. Example: a 100HP, 124FLA motor drive, to be operated temporarily at 130% over current requires a filter rated for at least 161 amps (LPF 0125 480 KS). Full Load Amps refers to the filter fundamental current rating.

For other applications: Consult factory for DC drive applications, other types of rectifiers, 50Hz ratings, single phase drives, other voltage ratings and higher load ratings. Consult factory or price list for enclosures.

Page 13: Low Pass Harmonic Filters - PWM Filters | APQ Power · Arteche Low Pass Harmonic Filters will help you to get ... roles in reducing load harmonics. Our basic three stage filter design

Example: a 100HP, 124FLA drive, to be operated tem-porarily at 130% current requires a filter rated for at least 161 amps (LPF 0125 480 KS).

For other applications: Consult factory for DC drive applications, other types of rectifiers, 50Hz ratings, single phase drives, other voltage ratings and higher load ratings. Consult factory for any other ratings or styles.
