AS220, Providence Community Radio (PCR), and Brown Student and Community Radio (BSR) want to bring truly local free-form and non-corporate radio to the airwaves of Providence. And we want you to be involved— whether that means coming into the studio to produce programming or solder wires together, or tuning your radio dial to us, or anything in between!

Once we are on air— with any luck, that means early this summer— 101.1 will be composed of programming from three different broadcasters. While there are similarities between each of our organizations, we will constitute three distinct and different broadcasting entities.

Our programming will be real-deal locally-sourced freeform radio— that means what the programmer in the studio wants to hear. There’s no list of songs to play, or lines to repeat. In the spirit of the values of our host organizations, BSR (‘radio that serves the curious listener’) and AS220 (‘unjuried, uncensored, open to the public’), programming on 101.1 takes form based on what our programmers what to make and hear.

Our programming seeks to educate and entertain the listener, whether we’re debuting new songs from a local band, digging deep and wide through record bins, or talking to your neighbor down the street. Perhaps most importantly, what you hear on 101.1 will not just mimic what can be easily heard on other locally available stations.

what will i hear on 101.1?

In 2013, BSR, AS220, and PCR applied with the FCC to become LPFM broadcasters, along with a number of other applicants in the area. In order to resolve these overlapping applications, the three groups entered talks to form a time-share agreement— splitting the rights to broadcast on one frequency. Due to affinities between the three groups, we have chosen to not just split airtime, but to work together on the construction and fundraising phase of the project. We have until July 2016 to get up and running.

But first— During the fall and into the winter, we hope to wrap up the legal and engineering prep work— signing a lease for our antenna’s home and figuring out how to get it up there. We’ll then need to purchase purchase and install transmission equipment, both at the antenna site and within our existing studo.

To do all of that, we first need to fundraise to pay for equipment costs, legal and engineering fees, and lease payments.

Have another idea of what you want to hear on the radio? Great! Get in touch with us about developing your own program.

Brown Student and Community Radio has been creating radio that serves the curious listener since 1997. BSR broadcasts online, and previously leased FM airtime on WELH 88.1.

AS220 is a nationally-recognized community arts organization entering its third decade in downtown Providence., The AS220 Media Arts Lab will serve as the locus of radio activity.

Providence Community Radio is a small non-profit organization dedicated to providing community radio to the people of Greater Providence, Rhode Island.
