Few people have experienced a trip with as many challenges, difficulties and

extenuating circumstances as those who had the task of delivering Top Times

to south Florida last October just in time for the Ft. Lauderdale International

Boat Show. It was truly a story of “against all odds” with severe weather conditions

the entire trip, craftspeople onboard trying to finish several details underway, a

cruise speed of only 13.5 knots, and a major battle against the clock.

4 TOP TIMES

The maiden voyage of Top Times began inManitowoc, Wisconsin just 16 days beforeopening day of the 2003 Ft. Lauderdale Boat

Show, where she was making her debut as the firstexpedition style, raised fo’c’s’le, full-displacementyacht that Burger has ever built. Leaving Manitowoc, with just over two weeks before the start of theshow was ambitious by anyone’s standards, but theproof was in the determination of Captain JoeWentzel of Burger, Captain James Cameron of TopTimes, the crew and the spirited Burger employeeswho persevered with great courage.

As Mother Nature flexed her muscles with high seasand fierce winds throughout most of the journey, thecrew members quickly realized how effectively thehull sliced right through the 8'-12' (2.4 – 3.7m)seas. Captain Joe was apprehensive about makingthe trip with such a tight schedule, but uponarriving in the Atlantic concluded, “Top Timesproved that she was incredibly stable and couldeasily handle the rough waters.” The round bilgehull design combined with the Quantum stabilizerswere an excellent defense to the wickedness of theseas. This hull design also proved to beexceptionally efficient, burning on average 45gallons (170 liters)/hour at 12 knots with theCaterpillar 3406E engines, providing a range of5000 nautical miles.

Upon the boat arriving in Ft. Lauderdale, just hoursbefore the start of the boat show, there was animmediate crew change with the exception of a fewdetermined souls to see the yacht come togetherovernight. The unbelievable odds were overcomeand the yacht was transformed beyond everyone’sexpectations, especially, and most importantly theBrown family who own the boat. When Mr. Brownvisited the boat upon its arrival and then again, thenext morning, he was astounded and impressed bythe transition into a “show ready” boat overnight! Thanks to several members of the Brown family, the

TOP TIMES 5

interior designers, and the many Burger employeeswho stayed up all night, we were able to “go on”with the show.

The interior space was designed by Linda Wietzkeand the Burger Design Team resulting in aprogressive, cutting edge “deco” styled yacht thatreally catapults Burger’s capabilities into a newcontemporary arena. The African mahogany isjuxtaposed with stylish “deco” attributes andsoothing sea foam colors that run throughout. Thestonework on this vessel is not only exotic, butartistically executed. There are five rings inlayed inthe main deck foyer stone floor symbolizing the five“connected” family members. With teenagers in thepicture, there was plenty of planning that went intotheir entertainment; from the centralized CD/DVDlibrary to the water toys on board and thepositioning of the sound insulation material.

The interior space on board is grand with a 25' (7.6m)beam and a full tri-deck design. The configurationallows for four, very large guest accommodationsbelow deck, a full beam, on-deck master suite, anextremely large galley and main salon/dining, andample crew accommodations for six.

One of the many interests shared by the Brownfamily is their obsession with the latest technologiesincluding, but not limited to electronics. So it comesas no surprise that the boat was outfitted with acomplete “Glass Bridge” navigation system byYachtronics where the flat panel LCD screens allowinterchangeable viewing between the main monitoringsystem, security, GPS, radar, Chart Nav, and T.V.

Top Times can be labeled as a proper yacht with allof the design elements, luxuries and amenities thatanyone could imagine. This yacht is one of very fewBurgers available for charter through Camper &Nicholsons. For their first season, they haveexperienced great success on the charter marketand plan on taking the boat to Newport again nextsummer.

We are all very proud to know the Brown family andgrateful for all of their support. This family gaveBurger the opportunity to advance our capabilitiesand progress in our craft to produce the world-classyacht, Top Times.

6 BEST N SHOW

• The master suite has a pair of curved entry doors that areelectro-pneumatically powered giving a clean, “no hardware” look.

• Bent-Glass Design provided curved exterior windows on bothlevels that appear to have a continuous band with no visiblemullions. Combined with the Freeman Marine port and starboarddoors that close flush with the boat, the look is seamless, sleekand quite sophisticated.

• The sky deck settee easily converts into a sun lounging area.

• The Light Touch system provides a centralized control stationfor audio components, lighting and all powered windowblinds/roller shades that are activated by the Crestron remotecontrol. The security and camera system also interface with samecentralized station whereby the exterior and interior lights willflash if the security system is violated.

There are many other technical aspects that are equallyimpressive. There are forward and aft shore power cords withpowered reels for easy adaptation to any docking configuration. This is the first Burger to use the new Caterpillar electronic enginecontrols, compatible with the new C30 engines. Best N Show isoutfitted with some excellent systems that are becoming standardon most Burgers today: Kilo-Pak generators, the automatedManagement AC Power System, the Kaydon coalescing fuelpurification system, the Quantum Marine central hydraulic powersystem, and the electric circulating water heater for the HVACsystem.

Best N Show is also equipped with a boat locator which allowsthe vessel to be tracked via the internet at anytime. This is astate-of-the-art feature that clearly exemplifies the high degree oftechnological sophistication throughout this vessel.

Overall recognition must be given to the effective collaborationbetween the Owners, Patrick Knowles Design, and the BurgerDesign Team for their unwavering drive and commitment toproduce this very special “1st Place” yacht.

Although the name Best N Show is intended to reference DogShows, specifically world-class Boxers, the yacht has becomea multi-contender for Boat Show Awards as well. Showboats

International presented an award for the Best Semi-DisplacementMotor Yacht less than 40 meters at the 2004 Bal de la Mer thispast summer. What a great honor it was for the Owners, PatrickKnowles of Patrick Knowles Designs, and Burger Boat Companyrepresentatives, to receive this prestigious award in Monte Carlo.

Just three months later, an announcement came from theSuperyacht Society that Best N Show has been nominated in the“Best Power” 23m-32m category for the 2004 InternationalSuperyacht Design Awards Program. The winner will beannounced at the Superyacht Society Event during the 2004 Ft. Lauderdale International Boat Show.

The sheer number and degree of elaborate details on this boat farexceed any other yacht built to date. The exotic veneer collectionof ribbon-striped Honduras mahogany and amboyna burl on themain deck level; ciricote rosewood on the upper deck; andlacewood with amboyna burl along with mahogany below deck isbreathtaking.

Overall the décor is a refined contemporary motif with “deco”details that has a wide array of exceptional features. In the masterstateroom, for example, there is an intricate design on the castglass window shutters that conceal the portholes. These themedscreens are subtle; yet represent the four seasons using anantique nickel finish.

Throughout the project there were many exciting concepts andideas proposed to the designers, craftspeople and engineers atBurger. The Burger Design Team and a number of vendorsaddressed each challenge and found effective solutions to meeteveryone’s satisfaction. Noted below are some of the incredibleeffects and features achieved:

• The dining room has a wispy sheer curtain mounted on a recessedtrack surrounding the dining area to give an ethereal, pavilion effect.

W O W

Just weeks before the 2004 Ft. Lauderdale International Boat Show, hull 499C, Burger’s

second Advanced Construction Series (ACS) project, sold to the first Burger owner who

saw her. This very same statement held true with the first ACS project, hull 494C –

Wimil, which was completed in 2002. Certainly, there is always an inherent risk when

designing and building speculative projects, but when Burger designs and builds two boats

that have both sold before reaching the market, that’s a remarkable accomplishment.

As Douglas Richey, A.S.I.D. who heads up Burger’sInterior Design Department and the Burger DesignTeam began to layout the interior brief on the project

the focus was clear: to creatively blend ancient andcontemporary concepts. Using olden backgrounds andrusticated finishes with clean contemporary features andfurnishings provides an “old-world” look with an innovativejuxtaposed character.

One of the first decisions was the interior wood selection.During an initial visit to their primary veneer supplier, theBurger Design Team spotted an unusual wood species thathas rarely been seen on a yacht. After inspecting thematching hardwoods and burl wood from the same tree, itwas immediately decided, they wanted the warm “club” stylelook of quartered English brown oak. Deliberate accents ofpatterned dark mocha wengé flooring in strategic areas wereused to create a contrasting effect. The balance is mostevident in the powder room with a ceiling of metallic mosaictiles, a bronze vessel sink set into an inverted triangularvanity cabinet, and a bronze glass mosaic counter top.Moving to starboard is a multi-functional niche, bronzemirror backdrop and suspended shelf ideal for showcasingobjets d’art.

The galley is a showcase unto itself, featuring a grandcooking station on the forward bulkhead with an opulentamalgamation of materials: bronzed ceramic tiles, whitebronze inlays, intricately carved woodwork, and stainlesscounters. All the cabinetry surrounding the oven is simplewith stainless fronts and hardware. The curved center islandhas diagonal stainless inlays where the same pattern ismatched tastefully throughout the yacht in the floors anddoors. While dining or relaxing at the center island theocean view to port is breathtaking!

Moving aft, the vast pilothouse appears as if it were carvedout of a giant block of English brown oak. It showcases animpressive command station containing a full “Glass Bridge”with the latest generation of navigation electronics. Anoversized, curved settee in antiqued chocolate brown leathersurrounds a triangular emperador marble table and a Stiddhelm chair in the same leather beautifully finish thesumptuous and inviting pilothouse.

Many of the proven systems are also specified on WOWsuch as the Quantum Marine central hydraulic powersystem, AVA computer-controlled stabilizers, Kilo-Pakgenerators and automated AC power management systemwith shore power converter, Kaydon coalescing fuelpurification system, Nautical Structures fully automaticpasserelle and crane. This yacht also has the Caterpillarelectronic engine control system designed to interface withthe new 1550 horsepower C30 engines.

In the main salon looking aft, there are full-length curvedglass windows with motorized traversed sheer draperies thatoperate along a curved track. The sofas are covered incream chenille accompanied by symmetrical chairs in

WOW 9

patterned velvet. The coffee table is framed in bronze with aglass top and the game table and end table have customreverse diamond inlays, a deliberate match to the pattern inthe floors and doors. With radiused end panels and speakersbuilt discretely into the toe kick, the entertainment center isa focal point, made out of burled English brown oak. Theburled theme is carried into the adjoining room with thedining table and the elaborately paneled, coffered ceilingalso accented with a suspended grid of fiber optic lighting, abronze finish and carved moldings. The aft deck is elegantlyappointed with a 54" round granite top table surrounded bybronze Klismos dining chairs.

Below deck, the master suite, accessed from the spectacularmain stairway/foyer through double arched doors, is brightand elegant using pale gold and cream colors. The entireheadboard wall is a study in sketch-face burl wood patternswithin a stile & rail grid work of quartered English brownoak. Hidden in the beamed ceiling is a drop panel housing a36" flat screen T.V. The master baths (his & hers) combineantiqued “torn” wall covering and rustic tumbled marble tofurther the ancient expression. All faucet handles are coco-brown onyx and bronze fixtures.

There are two guest accommodations directly across thefoyer from the master. The foyer is rich with details includinga triangular shaped burl wood sculpture niche, lit fromwithin, and an upholstered chenille background panel, allatop the theme-patterned wengé flooring. Looking aft, thequeen stateroom is tailored in pale peach woven silk with apleated coverlet and coordinating inserts dress the shutters. There is a curved wood cornice with inlay sunburst patternabove the bed and radiating ceiling panels to form a fanshape. Similar to the treatment in the master suite, a flat-screen T.V. panel drops down from the ceiling in this VIPguest stateroom. The twin room has upholstered berths witha copper colored velvet panel behind the bed and a coppermetallic fabric on the adjacent walls. In the guest bath thereis a striking custom mosaic wallcovering that connects thecopper and taupe colors.

There are crew accommodations for four in two generousstaterooms each with en-suite heads. The showers are linedin a rustic antiqued ceramic tile, as is the floor in thelaundry area and suitably equipped crew galley. A loungearea for the crew includes a leather L-shaped settee.

The flybridge is commodious and quite novel with a full-service bar sporting a granite top and an upholstered frontwith four Crown bar stools. For the chef, there is acommercial gas-grill. To enhance the entertaining options, there is a granite high/low table for dining and/or cocktailsdetailed with dramatic fiber optic under-lighting. The captainhas a flybridge helm station with a full repeat of all thenavigation electronics.

WOW is clearly Burger’s statement of being the best of thebest. Our overall objective: “To shoot for the stars.” Theresult: “A masterful expression by the Burger designers, engineers, and craftspeople to create a yacht thatshowcases their extraordinary talents and capabilities.”

At this writing, Lady Pat has just been delivered to her owners, Ralph and Pat Horn. All of our owners are as unique as our boats. During the last phase of construction, some owners prefer to be on-site helping to oversee every detail as the boat comes

together, whereas other owners are quite the opposite. They prefer that certain element ofsurprise… waiting to see the boat in a completely finished state. The Horns chose the latterand we have just received their reaction to the finished boat they have not seen for severalmonths. “We are absolutely thrilled. Every inch of Lady Pat exudes quality and is a tribute tothe skills of the architects, engineers, and craftsmen that designed and built her. She isamazingly smooth and quiet and exceeds our expectations in every way.” We’ll settle for that.

Lady Pat was patterned after Burger’s first ACS (Advanced Construction Series) boat, the 90'(27.4m) Raised Pilothouse, Wimil. The Horns saw her in 2002 and decided at first glance thisis exactly the style, layout and quality that they wanted except with the addition of a 10' (3m)cockpit. Done! The high-end systems onboard are commensurate with those on Wimil with afew variations. The owners chose the new Caterpillar C30 engine, a slightly larger Nautical Structures crane and they have designated trollingcontrols for fishing. These controls provide finer adjustments on speed and can even reduce the speed of the vessel at idle.

As the design brief came together, the Horns created a masterpiece, ultimately quite different from Wimil. They chose recessed cherrypanel walls instead of the recessed panel makoré and madrone burl wood. It became clear; they wanted a simple, clean, and slightly morecontemporary motif. The color scheme in the main salon is sage and cream.

The galley layout and décor can accommodate either casual family life or elegant entertaining. The center island has four arm stools with acircular ceiling pattern above. Absolute black granite countertops and mahogany planked floors nicely accent the cherry cabinetry. Much

consideration was given to the practicality of the fabrics and finishesto help keep everyone relaxed!

The aft deck glistens with complimentary green and gold fabricsresting on dark brown chairs. This leads directly to the cockpit forleisure and occasional fishing.

There are crew accommodations for three to four people with twostaterooms each with en suite heads. Masculine fabrics using rust, brown and gold tones prove to be easy on the eyes.

Lady Pat will be traveling on the Eastern Seaboard, Bahamas and Caribbean, and will be featured in the next issue with fullphotography.

Talesfrom theburgerfleet

many seasons on the previous Sis Ws. We spent a few daysdoing one of his favorite pastimes, fishing on Yellow Bar. Fishdinners prevailed for the time we were there!!

The Sis W spent part of the winter at the Ocean Reef Club in KeyLargo, where we participated in the Burger Rendezvous. In MarchMr. Walgreen celebrated with family, friends, and crew his 98thbirthday, a memorable affair complete with a caricature artist andlots of ice cream and cake.

By the first week of April we were enroute for destinations in theCaribbean. We ventured to lush, tropical Jamaica, Montego Bayand the Cayman Islands where the Walgreen’s did some sightseeing including a trip to HELL and a visit to a turtle farm. Wemade the long journey to Guatemala, a favorite for most of thecrew and the Walgreen’s. We cruised the awe inspiring Rio DulceRiver, the area where the original Tarzan movies (JohnnyWeissmuller) were filmed. It was here the Walgreen’s took theirfirst trip on Sis W launch (22’ Northwind) traversing some of thesmall tributaries. We found the people we met friendly and helpfuland the scenery spectacular. We then cruised on to Belize, IslaMujeres and Cancun, where high winds were still plaguing us andthe Walgreen’s flew home for a family occasion.

The Walgreen’s came back aboard in Washington D.C., tocelebrate the Fourth of July and visit the sights around the Capitoland the National Monuments (including the new WW II Memorial– a must see). The Walgreen’s were invited to tour the NationalDefense University, an interesting and unique experience for allthat were able to attend.

In every port from Maine to Guatemala we received manycompliments about what a beautiful yacht we have. Obviously, Mr. and Mrs. Walgreen, Capt. Jim and the crew already knowthat, but it’s always nice to know the rest of the world appreciatesquality workmanship as well.

So as you can see, we haven’t let many barnacles grow on us.Upon the Walgreen’s return, we shall begin the next leg of thissaga to points unknown at the moment. We’ve had a verymemorable first year aboard Sis W.

“01August, 2003 - Hammond Marina, Indiana - Mr.Charles R. Walgreen Jr. takes ownership of the Sis W.Capt. Jim Bean in command.” So reads the first entry in

the log book marking the continuing saga of the Sis W, herowners, guests and crew.

As this article is written, barely a year has gone by since thatentry. Yet the Sis W and her occupants have traveled over tenthousand nautical miles, with Mr. and Mrs. Walgreen aboardnearly 90% of those miles.

It was decided that our maiden voyage would be to travel fromManitowoc to Ft. Lauderdale. So on September 29th, 2003, we leftour new found friends in Manitowoc and began our journey with theWalgreens, their dog, six crew members, and three nurses.

We traveled north in Lake Michigan to Mackinaw City, where weencountered our first snow. Undaunted, we continued and someof the highlights included investigating the Old City of Montreal, walking the alleys and parks of Quebec City, and meeting thefriendly folks of Nova Scotia, where we were invited for dinner atthe Royal Nova Scotia Yacht Squadron Clubhouse.

We made a few stops in Maine, and a quick trip to Portland; fromthere we hurried quickly down the coast, as winter was nipping atour… stern. We did however make stops in Portsmouth, NHwhere the Walgreen’s first test drove their new IBOT’s (technowheelchairs) and Boston, where a high school friend of Mr.Walgreen’s came for a visit. Continuing on we made a stop inNewport, RI, then on to Norfolk, VA where the Walgreen’s wereinvited for a VIP tour of the Battleship Wisconsin. The last stop ofthis leg of the journey was in Cape Canaveral, FL for lunch withold friends of the Walgreen’s. On the 18th of November, 52 daysafter leaving Manitowoc, we cruised into the very familiar PortEverglades channel and Ft. Lauderdale, which was to be home forthe next few weeks.

In January, Mrs. Walgreen celebrated her 97th birthdaysurrounded by all three of her sons and their families. FromFlorida we traveled back and forth to the Bahamas, revisitingplaces like Chub Cay and Nassau, where Mr. Walgreen had stayed

Tenacity tells a story about her owners; quite simply, a story of sacrifice, working hard, and above all, keeping your enthusiasm. Itappears to have paid off; Mr. and Mrs. Johnson from Minnesota have contracted to build a 116’ Raised Pilothouse that is essentiallytheir first yacht construction project and their first Burger. Starting from modest means in their younger years and proving that tenacity

has its rewards. The most important motivator in their life is the statement, “To Be Enthusiastic, You’ve Got to Act Enthusiastic.” Thisphilosophy is described more fully in the book, “Got a Problem? Get a Duck!” written by Mr. Johnson. The book is filled with wisdom andinspiration. Though in the process of buying a couple of new businesses with no immediate plans for retirement, they are living theAmerican dream… comfortable with their future, content with their family, and now looking forward to cruising all over the world on theirnew Burger starting in the summer of 2005. Working closely with the Burger Design Team, the foundation of this is the combination oftraditional raised paneled makoré and the artistically appointed Mediterranean style moldings and accents. Soothing green and creamcolors are intended for the interior including green granites and marbles.

Tenacity will possess all of the high quality equipment and systems that have become standard on a Burger including a hydraulic passerelleby Nautical Structures. They did upgrade the electronics package and have added a second crane to the boat deck: one for launching thetender and the other for launching water toys. The next issue, Burger 2006 will contain a full feature on Tenacity including photos and acomplete brief.

The 144' (44m) Tri-deck, Mirgab V (pronounced meer-gahb) is well underway for the highly respected Alshaya family of Kuwait. Thisyacht represents a quantum leap for the renowned builder in both size and in complexity. Mirgab V will be ABS Maltese Cross A1 -AMS certified and a fully MCA compliant yacht to date which will further validate the company’s commitment to designing and

building world-class quality construction including the larger yacht market.

Mirgab V will have several very unique features including side deck bulwarks that fold down into a veranda, an integral swim platform thatconverts to a grand stairway to the sea, a retractable awning, two stair lifts, a pneumatic circular elevator that spans three deck levels, seven staterooms in the owner’s party and five in the crew’s area. The family has selected raised-panel African cherry (makoré) for thewood throughout, establishing a direction for a classic yet elegant interior. Other aspects of the interior design scheme are still underdevelopment, but it is clearly going to set a new standard once again. Delivery is scheduled for summer 2006 and Burger has beengranted permission to exhibit Mirgab V at the 2006 Monaco Yacht Show. This yacht will be based in Cannes, France, which will elevate theexposure for Burger in this new worldwide, megayacht market.

Just prior to the deadline for going to press with this brochure, we signed one of the most historic contracts in our history to design andbuild two identical 127' (38.7m) tri-deck motor yachts for a young Russian industrialist with a global business and leisure interests.

Burger hulls 505C & 506C, Areti I and Areti II, will be built upon our very successful and well-proven 26’06” (8m) molded-beam hullplatform (Sis W, Lady Grace Marie). Both vessels will be ABS+A1 AMS and MCA certified continuing an uninterrupted trend at theshipyard. The five-stateroom yachts will have a traditionally styled interior motif of raised panel African cherry (makoré) with severalinteresting features including a large commercial galley, full sauna room, and much more.

Both yachts launching in the spring of 2007, Areti I will be based in the U.S. for cruising the Eastern Seaboard, the Bahamas and theCaribbean. Areti II will be based in Europe for cruising the Mediterranean, Adriatic and Aegean Seas, and the Balkans.

Now we must ask you, why cross the Atlantic if you really don’t have to?

For the past 141 years, we have come to work forthe Burger Boat Company with incredible prideand anticipation. We have embraced the rich

traditions that shaped this organization and the legacyof what it takes to become a world class boat builder.Whether we have entered these gates as entry levelgeneral laborers, master craftspeople, highlycredentialed designers/engineers oradministrative personnel, we came with aspirit of excellence and enthusiasm.Perhaps, we followed our forefathers orfriends/neighbors who were proud to beemployed here. Many of us came fromdistant places to Manitowoc, Wisconsinand now with honor call this place –home. We all brought with us ourhighest expectations – of ourselves andour employer – to be the best; to growour craft and talent among others whoshare that same destiny and pursuit.

Each and every one of us, all 230,came for a variety of reasons and stayfor only one; Burger Boat Company is aplace for us to manifest our uniquepassion, knowledge, talent, and potential.Never has that been more evident than at this point in ourhistory. Many of us have witnessed and/or have experienced thedisillusionment of companies that have lost touch with whatmatters first and foremost – each other.

At Burger Boat Company, we do not have the opportunity to forgetthat value of the individual or the pursuit of continuous performance

improvement for both our product and our people. It is ourvery lifeblood and our survival in an industry that ischallenged by the immense complexity of people, places andthings necessary to thrive in an aggressively competitivemarketplace.

And so, everyday we arrive at work, fueled andinspired by our passion, but fully aware as all

great athletes know, passion is never enough.Passion did not alone envision, design, engineer and/or build our recent ShowboatsInternational “Yacht of the Year.” It took anever expanding commitment and creativecompetence in addition to innovativethinking, determination and effectivecollaboration to bring that project to itsexcellent and celebrated conclusion. Likethe entire yachting community, we are inawe of not only her strength and beauty, but mostly we are respectful of theselfless and talented efforts of the menand women who dared to pursue suchexcellence.

Today, we are under contract for thelargest and most magnificent projects this

BURGER INSIDE 17

On May 2, 2004, Burger Boat Company embarked on ajourney to convert a first class yacht builder with knownpedigree and history into a world-class yacht builder, the

standard by which all others are judged. Under the leadership ofDavid Ross and Jim Ruffolo, Burger Boat Company commissionedPro-Kure, Inc. to assist in navigating the course to World Class.Pro-Kure, a Los Angeles based company with expertise inOrganizational Development and Supply Chain Management, would work with the Burger Team to assess all levels of theorganization in order to determine key areas of opportunity. Witha clear focus on People, Product, Process and Performance, itbecame evident that the path to World Class was dependent onsuccessfully incorporating a system of integrated processes andmanagement. The organizational structure would have tocomprise the best leaders and work force to compliment Burger’s“Can Do” culture. Clearly, the greatest assets to Burger’s successwould be its people and culture.

The product of a 45 day in-depth assessment of the companywas the formation of six teams:1. Operational Business Planning2. Organizational Structure Development3. Role/Responsibility Development

On January 16, 2004, Wisconsin Governor Jim Doyle andManitowoc Mayor Kevin Crawford participated in aGroundbreaking Ceremony that represented the largest

expansion in the history of Burger Boat Company and the secondof a multi-phase program. The first phase, completed in 2000included the addition of two 150' x 50' (46m x 15m) bays and a175' x 120' (53m x 37m) double bay, all of which are containedin a single 36,000 sq. ft. (3,345 sq. meter) building.

This second phase, completed in September 2004, includes anew 48,000 sq. ft. (4,460 sq. meter) state-of-the-artmanufacturing complex, further validating Burger’s commitmentto the larger yacht market and is fulfilling a long-range plan tocreate a world class shipyard. The new $5 million buildingcontains two individual 100' x 210' (31m x 64m) bays that caneasily house four 165' (50m) or larger vessels. The following is alist of the new complex’s most notable features:

• Heated concrete floors throughout• Overhead bridge cranes full width and length in all bays

with 44-ton total capacity • 70' (21m) height of building at peak • State-of-the-art lighting, ventilation and sprinkler system• Motorized modular vertical door system with heated tracks• Mezzanine level of 6000 sq. ft. (557 sq. meter) for shops

at the yacht’s main deck levels

• Full heavy steel building • 275 hardwood driven pilings to ensure extreme building

stability• Digital web cameras throughout with secure client access

These two new double bays will be dedicated to the larger fullcustom megayacht market, ranging from 125'-165'+ (38-50+m)and will contain the latest CNC equipment. This expansion heraldsin a new and extremely exciting growth phase for Burger BoatCompany. The efficiencies gained by this new facility arestaggering and will reduce the number of hours on a given projectas well as improve our overall capabilities severalfold.

In an advanced stage of planning is our next expansion phasewhich will include a multi-level 60,000 sq. ft. (5,575 sq. meter)Engineering, Design and Administration Center. This will tie theentire shipyard together and create an incomparable 144,000 sq. ft. (13,380 sq. meter) world class yacht design and state-of-the-art construction facility, all under one roof.

The combined product of the sixteams would define the new BurgerBusiness System that would ensurethe company’s success in achievingWorld Class. The Burger BusinessSystem illustrates a system ofintegrated management, cross functional operation andcommunication with clearly defined roles and responsibilities thatare guided by an Operational Business Plan and ManufacturingSchedule. Additionally, the organizational structure ensures thatgood business decisions are made and communication occursthroughout the organizational matrix. Finally, a clear plan forcontinually improving all processes will sustain Burger’s futureposition of the World Class Standard of Excellence.

Nearly six months into the journey, early results clearly suggestthat the Burger Business System is a success. Cross functionalcommunication has markedly improved planning and minimized

On August 25-26, 2004, Burger Boat Company hosted its first ever Vendor Appreciation Event, focusing initially on several of themajor suppliers. The event began with a well attended tour of the shipyard including the new manufacturing complex followed bya social dinner where everyone got acquainted. The next morning a presentation was given starting with David Ross who

discussed the nature of the industry and his vision for the future. Nancy Melcher, Director of Human Resources, spoke about where Burgeris today and our guiding principles for tomorrow. Henry Chriss and Carol Schlichting of Pro-Kure, Inc. spoke about supply chain partnersand the many advantages of interdependencies. Together they laid out a proposal and the mapping of a shared alliance. Opening thedoors of communication is essential to finding out new strategies that can be mutually beneficial. The feedback from the vendors wastremendous and it was immediately decided this will be an annual event!

Spirits were high at the inaugural Employee Recognition Eventcombined with the dedication of the new 48,000 sq. ft.(4,460 sq. meter) state-of-the-art yacht construction facility

(manufacturing complex). Fully 25% of the entire work-force (230full-time craftspeople) are tenured with more than ten years ofservice, 50% have between 5 and 10 years, clearly demonstratinga major commitment and dedication inherent with the Burger Team.Very few companies can boast of such a statistic. This experienced, highly skilled and well-seasoned workforce continues to take on newchallenges with incredible determination.

Nancy Melcher, Director of Human Resources, in her keynoteaddress stated, "World class status as a company relies upon thesuperlative day-to-day performance of each and every team

member. We are committed as an organization to developing theresources essential to attaining that place in the eyes of ourcustomers and one another.”

Rich Auth, Production Manager, gave an emotional speech recallingthe Former Burger Workers (FBW’s) coming together when thecompany floundered in late 1990. “Much has changed under theRoss & Ruffolo ownership and the Company is enjoying aresurgence that is truly unprecedented in the marine industry.”

Included in the ceremony were several Burger retirees who helpedpave the way for the company to flourish. Proudly, 240+ peoplecame together to celebrate in honoring the craftsmen for their years of service.

As cruising grounds get more congested, more and more Burger owners are discovering the rugged beauty of the Pacific Northwestcoast of North America and its thousand miles of sounds, straits, passages, bays, and harbors. This wild and remote region, with oneof the longest sheltered passages in the world, has long attracted roving yachtsmen. In recent years, the number and quality of

marinas that can support large yachts have increased significantly, and lying alongside overnight is a practical option from Olympia,Washington to Juneau, Alaska. Which ever way one chooses to progress up and down the coast, doing so in a Burger assures that it willbe done in safety, comfort and timeless style.

In spite of this yachting paradise’s great distance from the East Coast, Florida or the Bahamas, these images show the trip is worth theeffort. In fact, once they experience the region, many have returned season after season.

Acall came in from an insurance agent the other day. He wasinterested in knowing the value of a 63-ft. Burger originallylaunched in 1962. His company has specialized in providing

insurance on vintage wooden yachts for several decades, so whenI gave him a wide price range dependent upon what stage of arefit the owner was at; his response was not that surprising.Rather than asking me why someone would take a forty-year-oldaluminum boat and refurbish it at great expense he said “isn’t itgreat that people understand the value of these fine old boats?”Indeed it is.

In recent years we have seen more and more yacht ownersseeking out vintage Burgers, not just with the idea of purchasinga nicely maintained cruising yacht, but for the purpose ofperforming a complete refit which often exceeds all reason interms of dollars. The rationale for this is readily obvious to us whohave been around the waterfront for a few decades. The Burgersof the 60s and 70s, and even the 80s, designed primarily by thefirms of J.B. Hargrave or Sparkman and Stephens, wereseaworthy, fuel efficient, and solidly built. With moderate draft, watertight bulkheads in the right places, and integral tankage

providing double bottom construction in most areas of the bilge, these boats were capable of going just about anywhere. A fewhave even made transatlantic crossings, long before the days ofDock Express.

The older Burgers have a following, of that there is no doubt.Their classic profile has made yachting what it is today. Alsoenduring is the value of a vintage Burger, a fact that proves itselfevery time one changes hands. This is due not only to the factthat Burger Boat Company is alive and well, but also becausethese vessels were way ahead of their time when originallylaunched. They have been and will continue to be the benchmarkof yachting.

We have several excellent opportunities in brokerage Burgeryachts available today. And we are well acquainted with thehistory of every Burger on the market. Give us a call if you wouldlike to talk about the best boats built in America.

burgernew strategies

After nearly thirty-five years at the helm ofa couple of pretty dynamic companies, Idon’t think there has ever been a more

exciting time in my entire business career thanthe chapter we’re in at this very moment.Burger Boat Company is on a remarkabletrajectory unlike any I’ve ever witnessed. And,the most rewarding by-product of it all is thecompany-wide pride that exudes from each andevery one of us. You probably hear that termused fairly often, so I’d like to try describingwhat it really means at least to me.

Burgers have always been pretty darn goodboats. Over the past several generations, they’ve provided their owners with a safe, comfortable and seaworthy yachting lifestylewhile always retaining and often times, appreciating in value. That is certainly a greatcombination. But ask the average Burger yachtowner what he derives most from owning aBurger and nine times out of ten the answer ispride of ownership.

As President, pride is seeing our incredibly talented craftspeople receive therecognition they so deserve and our product admired by so many as “the best ofthe best.” I can think of no better reward for the “piece of ourselves” that we putinto each of our individual projects than the pride we take in presenting amasterpiece to our clients. That pride is unquestionably a self-perpetuatingoccurrence that manifests itself in every yacht we deliver. For those who have beentaking note and following our ascent, yes, you are correct if you’ve said we’ve beenbringing each successive project up a notch or two and maybe even three. Actually,I don’t see an end in sight.

A little over a year ago, we made the decision to branch out beyond our well-established core business and make a very significant commitment to expand oursize range and include the much larger, fully classed and MCA certified yachts. And,while we think very highly of the traditional styling that has been synonymous withBurger, we’ve become increasingly comfortable embracing a movement to a moreclassic contemporary and European styling. We have set a course for the future andwe are moving steadfastly and resolutely towards our goals.

Additionally, we pledged to transform our aging shipyard (those familiar with it at allwould probably say that was the understatement of the century) into a world-classyacht design and construction complex. Since we made that commitment, we haverecently taken occupancy of our new 48,000 sq. ft. (4,460 sq. meter)manufacturing facility that represents phase II of our expansion program. Thiscoming spring we plan to break ground on phase III, the largest and most ambitiouschapter to date, our 60,000 sq. ft. (5,574 sq. meter) Engineering, Design andAdministration Center.

I kind of look at it this way… if a group of talented craftspeople can produce suchhigh-quality yachts as they have over the last few decades in a facility that wassubstantially over a century old, just imagine what they’re going to produce whenthey’re given a world class facility with state-of-the-art, computer-controlledmachinery and equipment.

Let’s face it… the time has come. By the way, I know the old yard was fully depreciated.

Imet the Brown family in the Virgin Islands. An energetic, fun,and loving family, they had chartered “Trilogy,” a classic 90'motor yacht. In the week that ensued, I believe I enjoyed their

vacation as much as they did. So much so that when it came timefor them to leave, I was sorry to see them go. I remain in awe athow that chance encounter has changed my life. I was contactedby Keith and Noel a couple of years later. They became the proudowners of a new 76' motor yacht.

The decision to become their Captain was instant.

Years were spent cruising on Top Times that took us all to newand wonderful places in the Great Lakes, the East Coast and theBahamas. During this period, I was able to see a family grow, aswell as their hunger for new cruising possibilities.

The Browns enjoyed the whole process of yachting. When it cametime to “step-up,” years of research were spent. Everyone waspart of the process for the perfect yacht, and Burger fit the bill tobuild her. Alas, my journey with Burger began. Noel’s excitementand passion for building the new Top Times was infectious toeveryone who worked on this project. As many know, Noel fell illand her life was tragically taken by cancer. The family and I weredealt the devastating loss of a caring mother, a loving wife and agreat friend.

The decision to continue with Top Times was not an easy one, butultimately was decided on by the family as a dedication to herlife. Burger’s staff felt the same. The result is a yacht ofuncompromising beauty and performance. This is evident toanyone who is privileged to board her. Top Times’ itinerary hasproceeded with new and wonderful ports of call that have lead tolasting memories. She is a reminder to us all of what is trulyimportant in life. Noel’s presence on Top Times continues on as abond between family and friends who are constantly comforted bythe beauty of this unsurpassed yacht.
