Gavin MeetPanels Shine
CHICAGO-Many of the par-ticipating radio folks at BillGavin's Radio, Program herelast week sat on panels and dis-cussed policies and views attheir particular stations. Thethree most important panelswere the non -rock and pop for-mat station talk, the r/b talkand the country/western talk.
Mark Olds of WMAQ-Chicagochaired the non -rock and poppanel discussion and reportedthat discussion stressed the im-portance of balance and indi-viduality in station program-ming and personality. It wasagreed, he relayed, that man-agement should control pro-gramming, manage radio per-sonalities and let the personali-ties get involved in the musicthey program. Consistency offormat and excellence down tothe last station jingle was un-derlined.
The panel concurred on theview that station promotionwas a valuable way to enlargeaudiences.
Panel members were RussBarrett, KMPC; Glenn Bell,WMAQ ; Gert ie Katzman,WNEW; Dick Carr and ElmaGreer, KSOL.
Lloyd Webb, WVON-Chicagomanager, reported on the r/bconclave, pointing out that thenumber of stations program-ming r/b is increasing and gen-eral acceptance by advertisersis following suit. The panelnoted, he said, the large num-ber of community service spotsr/b stations utilize.
He stated that all panel mem-bers underscored the usage ofcurrent play lists complementedby good standards.
Chris Lane of WJJD-Chicagogave the report on the c/w pan-el talk. His cohorts, he reported, noted that country music is be-coming increasingly popularand thus the big acceptance ofall c/w stations. Barriers arebroken as far as the advertiseris concerned and the listener, too.
New country fans-the part-time ones-are unfamiliar withartists and labels, Lane said, and therefore it is importantfor the country deejay to givethis info.

TV Review
Streisand Hour DelightsBY DOUG McCLELLANDCBS -TV colored Barbra last
week, and Miss Streisand repaidthem by covering all with glory(and, ultimately, no doubt withEmmy Awards, a la last season'sfirst one -woman show).
From the striking sign -onwith Barbra beautifully singing"Draw Me a Circle" while un-seen hands did just that, fillingin the features of a kinder-garten gamin which dissolvedinto the songstress' face-to theimpassioned concert sign -off, itwas a virtuoso hour-capturedfor the most part, on Barbra'slatest Columbia LP titled afterthe show, "Color Me Barbra."
However one may feel aboutMiss Streisand's presence (somefind her a bit over -confident,lacking warmth), there can belittle doubt that she has formi-dable piping. Pure, with justenough nasality to make hersound distinctive, her voice andintuitive "feel" lend new life tostandards and vivify even themost average new ones.
Occasionally, during her mostrecent hour (especially in con-cert) she had to shout to fighther too -loud orchestra (not un-common with TV vocal presen-tations) ; but for the most partshe received expert help fromall offcamera, including co -producers Joe Layton, who alsoconceived and choreographed
the program, and Dwight Hem -ion, the director, too.
The opening in the Philadel-phia Museum of Art found Bar-bra imagining herself to be sev-eral famous faces (a sequel toMiss Streisand's quick -changeBergdorf -Goodman episode inthe first TV special, but notnearly as brilliantly edited andperformed by Barbra, whosetalents were given their bestrun ever in that earlier seg-ment).
`That Face,That Fabulous Face'
This was followed by a color-ful circus sequence and a medleyof "Face" songs. Miss Streisandseems obsessed by her face, andits bizarre unevenness has nodoubt played a major part in herphenomenal rise. Her close-upswere frequent and fluid, and shemissed no chances to sport thatprofile. However, although sheapparently has no illusionsabout her looks (she did anamusing profile -to -profile bitwith an anteater in the circusscene), it does seem in thiscase a perverse conceit tobuild more than half of one'shour TV show around one'sown face.
If you missed "Color Me Bar-bra," catch the rerun. It wasan unusually tasteful TV hour, and La Streisand is a superbsinger.

It's a Hit . . .
It's 'SupermanBY DAVE FINKLE
NEW YORK-Superman cameto Broadway's Alvin Theaterlast week as the star of a newhit show, called-what else?-"It's a Bird! It's a Plane! It'sSuperman." Superman fans willlove it. Kids will love it. Non -fans will love it. Evil -doerswon't love it. Hippies will de-ride it.
Just about everything in thismusical comedy is musical andcomic and totally in keepingwith the spirit of the comicstrip hit of the '40s that stead-fastly pitted good against evilin the wonderful city of Me-tropolis. Superman is a goodytwo shoes. Clark Kent (mildmannered by Bob Holiday) isa goody two left shoes. LoisLane (mooned by Patricia Ma -rand) is a lovestruck girl re-porter. And there are a coupleof new meanies-a vengefulNobel Prize losing scientist(fidgeted by Michael O'Sulli-van) and a spiteful gossip col-umnist (pranced by Jack Cas-sidy).
Done with LoveThe songs are by Charles
and Lee Adams and thebook is by Robert Benton andDavid Newman-all of whomobviously know and love Super-man and have a little milk ofhuman krypton in their metab-olisms.
The New York dailies were 4-2 in their acceptance of the newplay. The Daily Planet flippedover it. The Times' StanleyKauffmann called it "easily thebest musical so far this season. . . I add at once that it wouldbe enjoyable-in any season."This influential quote aloneshould guarantee quite a runfor the tuner and it'll affectsales of the Columbia caster dueout within a couple of weeks.
"You've Got Possibilities"and "You've Got What I NeedBaby" are two ditties that arelikely to step out, althoughthere are a couple of otherequally appealing numbers inthe context of the show. (Thetruth must be told. There are afew clinkers in the score, too.A few clinker scenes as well.)
But who cares? "Super" isduper.

MGM Reports
`Zhivago' ActionThe MGM records soundtrack
album of "Doctor Zhivago" con-tinues to gain momentum in allphases of the music market, an-nounces Mort Nasatir, Presi-dent of MGM Records.
The album is racking up anunprecedented number of diskjockey plays for both the sound-track and the single of "Lara'sTheme" from the album. Thisheavy penetration is centerednot only on local stations but onsyndicated national and inter-national music shows
Mutual cross -plugs for thealbum and the film between rec-ord stores and theaters repre-sent another major aspect ofthe sales campaign. Music shopsare featuring stills from theDavid Lean film in their dis-play windows in addition to thealbum's cover. Likewise, exhibi-tors have set up album displaysin theater lobbys.
MGM Records reports that thisco-operative advertising has re-sulted in a flood of tearsheetsspotlighting the "Doctor Zhiva-go" soundtrack in music adver-tising and, in many cases, play -date and theater credit has beenworked into the copy of therecord ad.
City branch in 1958, and thenmoved on to manage the Denverbranch in 1960. Eggerss takesover his new post in San Fran-cisco immediately, the branchoffice being located at 66 Dor-man Ave.
The Denver vacancy will befilled by Douglas Jydstrup, whois being transferred from theKansas City area.

April Is SerkinMonth at Col
April is Rudolph Serkin monthon Columbia Records, accordingto R. Peter Munves, ProductManager of the Masterworkslabel.
Columbia is honoring the 30thanniversary of Serkin's Ameri-can debut in 1936. For that his-toric debut Serkin performedBeethoven's Fourth and Mozart'sTwenty -Seventh Piano Concertoswith the New York Philharmonicunder the direction of ArturoToscanini. New Serkin record-ings of both works are repre-sented in this month -long salutewhich has already begun.
Ads have already appeared inthe March 26 Saturday Reviewsnd the April Hi Fi/Stereo Re-view. The latter ad is on theback of a three -page gatefoldComposer Calendar. The maga-zine is offering additional copiesof the calendar for 25 cents ona send -in basis, so the Serkin adswill get further readership aboveand beyond Hi Fi/Stereo Re-view's 625,000.
Bargain SetsHeadlining the release are two
basic -library, low -price sets:"The Five Beethoven Piano Con-certos," a four -record set, and"Rudolf Serkin plays Four GreatRomantic Piano Concertos," athree -record set. Dealers pay forslightly more than three recordsin the four -record Beethoven set.The 3 -record Romantic Concertosset costs them a little more thanthe price of two records. Butmany dealers, according to Mun-ves, are offering them at specialdiscount prices which are equalto one free record. The "GreatRomantic Piano Concertos" setincludes Serkin's acclaimed re-cordings of both Brahms Piano
Concertos, Schumann's A Minorand Mendelssohn's First Con-certo-all with Ormandy and thePhiladelphia Orchestra. Orman-dy shares accompanying honorsshares accompanying honorswith Bernstein and he New YorkPhilharmonic in the Beethovenset.
Munves has forecast a brightsales future for both sets as theyoffer great recordings of basicrepertory that beginning classi-cal buyers purchase in droves.
The special low -prices givedealers a reason to advertise andpromote them heavily. Becausethe sets are skinwrapped, Mun-ves uses the back -liner of eachto pre -sell the consumer withraves these recordings have al-ready received as single LP al-bums. Other low-priced sets inthe series are also puffed on theback liner.
More Great SerkinThe remainder of the all-Ser-
kin release consists of single LPalbums: Beethoven's First Con-certo (with Ormandy) and the11 Bagatelles ; Beethoven's Sec-ond Concerto coupled with Mo-zart's Twenty -Seventh Concerto(both with Ormandy), Mozart's14th and 17th Concerti (withSchneider), Mozart's "Double"Concerto (which Serkin per-forms with his son Peter) plustwo Bach Concertos for ThreePianos in which the Serkins arejoined by pianists MieczyslawHorszowski and Ruth Laredo; asolo album on which Serkin playsSchubert's great A Major (opusPosthumous) Sonata ; and an al-bum of Mozart and Mendelssohnchamber music masterpiecesfrom Serkin's Summer MarlboroMusic Festival.

3 Win Merc ContestNEW YORK-The first in a
series of talent contests to beset up in conjunction with theCoca Cola Company and PaulDrew, Program Director ofWQXI and Editor of the South-ern Music Survey, was con-cluded last week by MercuryRecords in Atlanta, Ga. Thecontest, held in Atlanta's Mer-chandise Mart, although de-signed to produce one winninggroup to be recorded by thelabel, brought pacts to threeseparate performing groups.
Mercury A&R Vice President,Shelby Singleton, who acted asone of the contest's judges, alsonoted that an additional fivegroups were sufficiently impres-sive to merit further privatescreening for recording con-sideration.
Billed as the "Young Ameri-can Battle of the Bands," theevent called for amateur self--contained groups from the At-lanta area to play and sing fortwenty minutes. Entrants couldperform any material, but hadto include at least two originalsin order for the judges to ap-praise the quality of theiroriginality. Of over 200 en -

The big meetings at the Bill Gavin programming conferenceare over. Frank Ward, General Manager of WWRL, N.Y.,was the most exciting, magnetic, dynamic and stimulatingspeaker there. A close second from the pop side was Pat O'Dayof KJR, Seattle. Tremendous talks were given by Ed Wright,Lloyd Webb, General Manager of WVON, Arnie Schorr, ownerof KGFJ, L.A., and then Lucky Cordell, P.D. of WVON, andLeBaron Taylor of WJLB were absolutely fantastic.
I pointed out to the gathering that 95% of the effort:,toward improving race relations came fromthe R&B stations, and I asked what the popstations should start doing. Arnie Schorrstated that the news media were definitelyinflaming the public, because he said hisnewsmen could find NO RIOT in WATTSthe other week, despite what the paperssaid. LeBaron Taylor thinks that there isgoing to be a long hot summer!
Lloyd Webb and Arnold Schorr broughtup the new CHEAPER rating systems such as Media Statwhich involve the listener writing out a diary. Top 40 andR&B stations suffer greatly in such a rating because theiraudiences are much less inclined toward writing. In fact, ifa sampling were biased in this manner, one would expect thelocal classical music FM station to come out #1. One stationmentioned that they didn't come out as well on the MediaStat as they do on Pulse and didn't land a big chewing gumaccount. I pointed out that any teacher can tell you that thereis a high positive correlation between kids in school whoconstantly chew gum and not knowing how to write and readvery well. In other words, the cats who chew the most gumare the cats who say "later" when it comes to filling in aradio station listening diary.
Arnie Schorr pointed out that a big car manufacturer didn'tbuy his station which has 60% of the Negro pulse and is #3in the general market at night and #7 during the day. Yetthis manufacturer bought 10 deep in the L.A. market, andhas no other way to reach the Negro market other than thruKGFJ (Negro readership of L.A. newspapers is about 1%.)It sure is hard to figure!
Schorr also articulated his policy of not playing any R&Brecords that can go pop. Thus, he only plays about 70% ofthe national R&B hits. He wants KGFJ to be pure, stone R&B,and he's not about to force the 5 pop stations on R&B recordsand then have them clobber him by going right on that newlycreated "name" artist's next release. He pointed out that thepop stations don't go on new R&B artists unless KGFJ firstwarms the sales on the records. Thus, L.A. pop stations areonly playing about three or four R&B records, and Arnie hasno fear of them grabbing his stick. Since he has no competitionto speak of, this is how he keeps his game up tight.
Much tribute was paid to Rudy Runnels and Bill Sherrardof WOL, Washington, the first R&B station to have a #1rating across the board in any city. They have only been onthe air since July. Frank Ward pointed out that the all -newsstation in N.Y., WINS, is grabbing 15% of the Negro audience. However, WWRL is sold out on spots. Frank, old bean, you'llnever know how many people commented how fantastic, fas-cinating a speaker you are. I, for one, was very proud to see youup there representing R&B for us. You were unbelievable, andwhat you were saying upset the place. These pop owners andmanagers really didn't know what has been happening thelast few years in R&B radio, and your classy, explosive presen-tation and manner landed like an H -Bomb!
The one thing that really shook those people up was whenyou, LeBaron Taylor and Lucky Cordell all refused to giveaway much information about just how you are accomplishing

Taking Care of Business
BY DEL SHIELDS
On the Album SceneIn reviewing the top list of
jazz LPs in Record World'sweekly survey, one becomesaware that the top sellers re-main somewhat constant. As aresult, many times other LPsgetting strong regional reactionsometimes never break through. We will make every effort todirect attention to these LPs.We can forsee the time whenjazz LPs will have a muchquicker turnover in terms of"newer" LPs while still main-taining the extended life ofactivity among those recordswe might classify as staples.
Among the newer LPs, BlueMitchell's "Down With It"(Blue Note) is very strong inNew York. This trumpet alum-nus from the Horace SilverGroup, along with Junior Cook,ts, Gene Taylor, b, Chick Corea,p, and Aloysius Foster, d, haveput together three groovey cutsfor a very tasty album. Mostpopular cut is "High HeelSneakers." The popularity of"Sneakers," formerly a big rockhit, was not the reason for Blueor other jazz men who haveinterpreted this tune. The tunehas musical validity that lendsitself to jazz. And with Bluethis may possibly prove to beone of the biggest records hehas had to date.
"Talkin' About," Grant Green(Blue Note), showcases theguitar of one of the most bril-liant guitarists in the business.Grant collaborates with LarryYoung on organ and ElvinJones on drums. His horn -likeapproach to the guitar blendsbeautifully with Young's sen-sitive organ and the dynamicsof Elvin's drumming. "Talkin'About J. C." is dedicated toJohn Coltrane and is a moving, challenging tune. But "People"is the gas! This ballad hasGrant almost vocalizing.
"El Chico," Chico Hamilton(Impulse), is Chico's latest bidto recapture his large "ForestFlower" audience. With Al Stin-son, b, Sadao Watanabe, as andf, Victor Pantoja, Latin per-cussion, Willie Bobo, Latinpercussion and the talentedGabor Szabo, guitar, they ex-plore the Latin jazz idiom andcome off superb. "Conquista-dores" is a powerful, melodicpiece while "People" once againlends itself to a new transla-
tion guided by the wizardry ofGabor Szabo.
The same Mr. Szabo leavesthe Chico Hamilton group tem-porarily and uses the talentsof Gary McFarland and com-pany to create "Gypsy '66"(Impulse). There are ninetracks on this album and Gaborgives ample evidence that heis one of the major guitarvoices of today. His "Yester-day" written by the McCartney -Lennon team of the Beatles and"Gypsy '66," the title tune, should bring a great deal ofattention to him. Here is analbum exposing the sound oftoday in a rhythmic, pulsatingway.
A Live 'Ball'
"Cannonball Adderly, Live"(Capitol) is "Ball's" first liverecording since his Tokyo al-bum. At one time, one of thelargest jazz sellers, he has beenlooking for the right combina-tion that would propel him backon the charts.
In this latest album, a groupthat included his brother, Nat,Joe Zawinul on piano and LouisHayes, Amd Jones (now withOscar Peterson) and CharlieLloyd who has also departed, they have created a number ofinteresting and melodic tracks.A new composition written byNat, "The Little Boy With theSad Eyes," is an extended pieceof different solo moods. Thereis a reworking of "Work Song"and a swinging up tempo ver-sion of Charlie Lloyd's "SweetGeorgia Bright."
Horn, Du Shon ClickingTwo vocalists this writer has
been praising for some time arebeginning to get their messageacross with the help of somemusically discerning dee jaysthroughout the country. One isShirley Horn, the other is JeanDu Shon.
Miss Horn can be heard on"Travelin' Light" (ABC -Para-mount). Johnny Pate, a talentedcomposer and arranger, pro-duced the set and can easilyadd this latest effort to hisgrowing list of impressivecredits. Miss Horn is describedas a "singer who sits in yourlap when she sings."
Whether in your lap or stand-ing at the mike, the Washing-ton, D. C. lass has a way witha song. She is a stylist freefrom cliches and fresh in hera pp r o a c h. The title tune"Travelin' Light," "I CouldHave Told You" and "Had YouTried to Forget" are delightfulmusical excursions that displaythe talent of Shirley.
"Feeling Good," Jean DuShon (Cadet), is another finevocalist making a strong bidfor recognition and her effortsare based on pure musicallegitmacy. Her album contains12 tunes in a variety of settingswith arrangements by JimmyJones, Oliver Nelson, BillyByers and Torrie Zito.
Her bid is a strong one."Wild is the Wind," "FeelingGood," "Out in the Cold Again"are highly programmable mate-rial.
`Soul Message'
"Soul Message," Richard"Groove" Holmes (Prestige),has the exciting Errol Garner"Misty" as the big track. Thisyoung organist from Camden,N.J. has had a number of finealbums in the past but this oneshould be "the clearing in thewood" for him. "Song For MyFather," the Horace Silvercomposition, is also in the al-bum and marks the first timethis writer has heard an organtrio group attempt this best-selling tune. Groove's offeringis warm with a Latin flavor.
"The Loop," Johnny Lytle(Tuba), has this young vibestfollowing on the heels of hischart selling "The VillageCaller." Not much can be saidabout Lytle that has not al-ready been said by those of usaware of his fine work. Caughtin the middle of the unfortu-nate Riverside bankruptcy justwhen his record "Lela" wasbeginning to make some noise,he may make up for lost time."The Loop" is catchy and canbe played on all programs. ButJohnny's real forte is his waywith a ballad. He rolls with asong and has a way of teasingthe lyrical quality in a beauti-ful melodic way. "Time AfterTime" and "The More I SeeYou" are excellent examples ofhis work.
Besides his regular group ofPeppy Hinant, d, Milt Harris,Org, he is augmented by Wyn-ton Kelly, p, George Duvivier,b, and Willie Rodriguez on sometracks.
These are just a few of thenewer releases that call formore than just a few cursorylines in a column. They justbecome regular occupants ofturntables across the country.

KAL RUDMAN'S
Money MusicGavin Meet Looks Like Annual Event
Pat O'Day, P.D., of KJR, Seattle, showed why he has been votedradio man of the year in the Gavin poll by giving a dynamic, electrifying speech at the recent Chi Gavin Conference.
There is no question that Pat is a fantastic speaker who knowshis business and knows what should be done with a radio stationas well as or better than anyone in the industry. He received aroaring ovation, and I thought Chuck Blore would jump out of hisskin when he applauded Pat. Harvey Glascock, General Managerof WNEW, N. Y. gave a magnificent, beautifully produced pre-sentation that caused a great deal of favorable comment.
The big news was the C&W and "two-way radio" talk formatexplosion. The least known and least understood explosion wasthe R&B story. When Ed Wright spoke about NARA, many of theradio execs didn't even know what a NARA was. Ed carefullyexplained that it wasn't meant to be a deejay union.
The turnout was fantastic, and the biggest names in the busi-ness were there. There is no question that this will become anannual event. It's needed.

Time magazine put Hy Lit of WIBG, Phil., in the "big-time" witha feature article recently in the Modern Living section, whichdescribed the impact of "The Philly Dog" by the Mar -Keys onStax upon the Philly teen dancers. Time states, "As everyoneshould now be aware, whenever Philadelphia rocks, the rest ofthe U. S. rolls." (Love that Times.)
Hy explained to Time that the kids in Philly improvised on andcleaned up a risque Kentucky dance called the dog. The precisionmovements and grace of the all -but -pro Philly teen dancers arenow being seen coast -to -coast via syndicated TV on Seven Arts'Jerry Blavat show. I expect it to greatly influence pop program-ming in many localities, but to be seen.
Matty Singer is really jumping about "Monday, Monday,"Mamas & Papas . . . The most picked new record is "8 MilesHigh," Byrds . . . Julie Rifkind of Boom claims that he has nosweat to bring the Cab Calloway version of "History RepeatsItself" into pop pay -dirt.
As just about everyone predicted, Cher is going all the way... Peter & Gordon fooled a lot of doubters with their very strongrelease . . . The Young Rascals, Petula Clark, Knickerbockers,Yardbirds, Tokens, Ray Charles, Lou Christie, Dionne Warwick,M.F.Q., Eddie Rambeau, and the Beach Boys are living up to alltheir picks . .. Amy is going full steam ahead with "Too Young,"Tommy Vann . . . "Hold Tight" on Fontana looks very strong . . .
Sarah Vaughan is finally back on the charts with a virtuoso per-formance of "Lover's Concerto" ... George Goldner is ecstaticabout the reaction to "She Cried," Shangri-Las. He got the pickon all three Detroit stations and a whole host of major stations. . . Colpix is running hard and fast with "Can't Grow Peaches,"Minutemen ... "Cool Jerk," Capitols, Karen (Atco), is way over15,000 in Detroit, broke fast in Philadelphia, Baltimore, Washing-ton and watch it go ... "Book of Love," Underbeats, is big whereplayed ... Again I say, try the flip of "I Hear Trumpets," Tokens
Mindbenders is a smash, just like it is in England ... The NeilDiamond on Bang is now out. . . . Fantastic airplay on "Love MeWith All Your Heart," Bachelors . . . MGM picked up the Louis-ville hit by the Merseys. . . . Good play on "Mumph," Ludwig &Klassics, Imp.. . . Once again Anthony & Sophomores have a hitin Philadelphia off WIBG ... "The Teaser," Bob Kuban, is a stonesmash . . . Ditto "Sun Ain't Gonna Shine," Walker Brothers . . .
Good play on the new Bobby Fuller 4 on Mustang . .. Larry Uttalreports that "Leaning On You," Yo Yo's, Amy, broke BIG in Nash-ville and in Memphis ... Paul Drew tells me that he is flipped by"Elvira," Dallas Frazier, all six minutes of "Lovin' Feelin',"Johnny Rivers, "Dance" LP; 'Life & Soul of the Party," PetulaClark LP (covered by Shelby Singleton for Mercury); "Georgeand the Dragon" (from the new movie), Herman's Hermits' "HoldOn" LP ... Big Southern reaction to "You Couldn't Get My LoveBack." LeRoy Van Dyke, W.B., and "Pin the Tail On the Donkey,"Paul Peek, Columbia . . . Paul and Dick Smith in Chicago prom-ised me that they would check out the "B" side of the Tokens

the big things you are doing. As LeBaron dynamically put it,"A top R&B deejay puts down more soul to his audience withone line, than a stereotyped T&T guy does in a four hourshow."
Paul Drew, P.D. of WQXI, Atlanta, told the entire audiencethat he was grabbing big pop ratings by playing heavy R&B.He said that the British sound has had it (and Paul shouldknow), and that the American public would rather hear thereal thing by a Wilson Pickett, Otis Redding or Solomon Burkethan a British imitation. Even Pat O'Day of KJR, Seattle, saidto me, "Kal, we don't sell R&B in this town, as I've often toldyou, but this new Wilson Pickett is a pop hit in Seattle, Wash-ington." Bertha Porter told the audience that it was Top 15pop in Hartford.

The point to be made really, chaps, is . . . is it really worthit or not? I find it rather hardto concentrate at the moment, because although I've got thesound down low, I can't resistyour Barbra Streisand who'sdominating the B.B.C. "telly"screen with her show, "MyName Is Barbra." Now as I lookat Barbra, I've got the feelingthat she thinks it's all worth it,but perhaps it comes to hernaturally - then again, we'rebuilt differently, come to thinkof it. But I can tell you for posi-tive fact that my editor SidParnes doesn't think it's worth-while . . . and it shows !
Anyway, as I'm hoping to come to New York this summer, Ithought I'd better get around to some positive action, so I pickedup the phone, made some arrangements to do something aboutit and the results were agonizingly astonishing. Rather thankeep you coming out in a bath of perspiration over the mysteryof the point to be made that requires the services of our PatrickMacNee and Diana Rigg of "The Avengers" . . . or your PerryMason or Amos Burke and will still remain a mystery is . . .
my overweight.True it be that I'm a little naive, for the joke is on moi (French
translation) when I tell you that having arrived in New Yorkin 1964 the most streamlined dj in the world, I trusted andbelieved your editor as night after night he assured me that wewere eating No -Cal pizza, and I arrived back in Great Britainto find that your pizzas were TERRIBLY Cal and not for Al!
Anyway, two weeks ago my masseur came around with a bottleof vitamin pills and told me they were perfectly safe, as theywould make me feel as though I'd eaten plenty of food andwould give me all that healthy food would. Marvelous chaps!I started singing "I'm Gonna Lock My Fridge And Throw Awaythe Key" and there I was at the beginning of a new life as apilletarian. For one whole week I swallowed those nasty littlepills-every morning I hopped on those bathroom scales, andthey registered 160, 161, 162, 163, 164, 1641/2 . . . and when Igot to 165, I decided that something wasn't right! I rang mymasseur in great alarm, and around he came with great speed.I got on the table, he worked on me for an hour and said "I'llhave five pounds off you without any doubt." I decided that hehad that same sincere look in the eyes that matched my editor's,and when the massage was over, I raced to the scales, and thatrevolting, nasty little black pointer looked back at me and said,"Jolly good show, sir . . . 167 lbs."
Well, don't just stand there, think of something, and tell mewhat to do. And if you're thinking what I think you might bethinking, then keep your advice to yourself!
Now, records. As I thought might well happen, our ValDoonican, is giving your Bob Lind, a bit of the "chase me.Charlie" routine with "Elusive Butterfly" . . . The Bachelorshave hit the Top 20 with a double -sided proclamation of "TheSound of Silence"/"Love Me With All Your Heart" . . . As wasnot expected, Lou Christie has had a reversal with "LightningStrikes," but Sonny and Cher have gone up the 20 again with"What Now My Love" . . . The Spencer Davis Group, who madea No. 1 of "Keep on Running," are on the climb again with"Somebody Help Me" . . . And one I hope there'll be a mountainof love for is Norma Tanega's "Walking My Cat Name Dog" . . .
or is it my dog named cat? Not to worry . . . and in a recklessoverweighted moment, I've bet someone or other one of HerbAlpert's "Spanish Fleas" to five pounds of surplus weight thatthe Seekers' new one, "Someday One Day," isn't a Top 10 propo-

The Rolling Stones are off on a 10 -day conti-nental tour today, and we wait for their "19th Nervous Break-down" follow-up . . . as we wait likewise from The Beatles.
Finally, if you're coming to London, and feel you're in needof my masseur, George, he assures me that there is no suchthing as a No -Cal massage!

"Serkin," says Munves, "is oneof the great pianists of our time.He is a dedicated musician whoquietly goes about making onegreat record after another." Hisrecent recordings of the Brahmsand Schumann Piano Quintetswith the Budapest Quartet sentcritics into ecstasy.
"Small wonder," says Munves.with the enthusiasm of an ardentchamber music devotee, "they'resimply the best on records-andthe best I've heard since the an-cient Flonzaley recordings withBauer and Gabrilowitsch."
"Music lovers the world over,"says Munves, "will rejoice overSerkin's Mozart concerto record-ings. Mozart concertos as theyare played on these recordingshaven't been heard on recordssince the legendary Schnabelwaxings of the '30s."
"Serkin," enthuses Munves,"plays Mozart with all his heartand soul. Only an artist im-mersed in the wonderland ofMozart's concerti could give usthis kind of heavenly playing. This is inspired music making.Serkin's Mozart concerto re-cordings will have music loversthe world over eagerly awaitingfuture releases in this series."

Buck Owens Proves YouCan Take Him Anywhere
BY DOUG McCLELLAND
NEW YORK CITY -BROOK-LYN -NEWARK - Buck Owensand all-star country troupeplayed three engagements wayup East on a recent week -endthat had ticket buyers lined upand as anxious as if they werein the welfare line Buck singsabout.
Presented in the WJRZ-New-ark "Cavalcade" series of con-cert performances (this wasNo. 4), the show was emceedat Carnegie Hall on Friday,March 25, and the followingnight at Newark's SymphonyHall by station's Lee Arnold, and Sunday night at the Brook-lyn Academy of Music by BobLockwood, also of WJRZ.
The demand for tickets inNewark was so heavy that asecond, late evening perform-ance was given. An extra addedattraction at the first Newarkshow was the surprise appear-ance in the audience of JimmyDean, who was introduced toimmense audience applause byboth Arnold and Owens, thelatter acknowledging the greatdebt all country performersowe TV -disk entrepreneur Dean.
Rousing, Successful ShowsOwens, of course, was the
mainstay of the evening, closingthe program with -literally -abang. Whether singing aboutgoin' in the movies, being to-gether again, the pleasures ofone more time or having a tigerby the tail, Buck was the ulti-mate in country showmanship. He was not too big to allow hisextremely versatile Buckaroosto share the limelight in somenoisily hilarious comedy inter-ludes that eschewed neitherBeatle wigs nor gunshots andconvulsed audiences. (CapitolRecords, recording Owens atCarnegie for an album underthese hectic conditions, wasprobably less amused.)
For the record, the Buckaroosare comprised by Tom Brumley,Willie Cantu, Don Rich andDoyle Holly, the last-named twogetting much play, respectively,as Buck's singing assistant andwide -grinned comic cutup.
Owens in a veteran performerwith a winningly off -hand vocalstyle and plenty of savvy. Heknows exactly what to do in thespotlight, and makes no falsemoves when he steps out of it,either. As they say, you cantake him anywhere. TheseOwens dates have unquestion-ably done much to break downthose country barriers evenfurther in the Big City.
Buck Owens (center) and His BuckaroosCavorting at Carnegie Hall
Curless Cheered, TooDick Curless' straightforward,
appealing country warbling,Maine -style, brought cheers; asdid Johnny Paycheck's morevolatile singing -and not onlyfrom residents of "Heartbreak,Tenn." Archie Campbell wasboth amusing (as a comic) andtouching (as a singer, on "TheMen in My Little Girl's Life").The Homesteaders proved a per-sonable, talented group, too, anda new songstress named KayAdams was right perky andpleasing.
A special word of praiseshould go to Marion Worth,long-time country thrush whonot only decorates a stagewarmly and prettily but singsa mighty sweet song. She did
her "Shake Me, I Rattle" hit ofa while back, among others, andthe crowds loved her.
Fans' flashbulb cameras pop-ped constantly during all per-formances, and when askedlater backstage if performersdidn't find it a disturbance,Marion, with true down-homeunderstanding, replied: "We'reused to it. It's when they stopthat we worry!"
It was announced that due toaudience reaction, the all-C/WWJRZ (continuing these "Cav-alcades" indefinitely) was aboutto increase to 5,000 watts. WithBuck Owens and company incharge at these performances, the power of country music wasnever stronger -or more uni-versal.

Billy Walker, after 15 years with Columbia, moved over toFred Foster's house. Fred's one of the music biz' most articulateand progressive promoters and has made something out ofnothing at Monument. Fact, Fred is Monument and he'll havethe world knowing that Billy Walker is headquartering in Good-lettsville. Good luck to both! . . . Oh yes, Buck's first shot atthe Dick Clark -hosted "Where the Action is" is another firstfor our business. Dick and Buck got together as a result of theirvisit backstage at the Country & Western Academy's AwardsDinner at the Palladium Feb. 28. Dick was a presenter . . .
KGBS, the newest radio member of the country music familyin Southern California, is currently hosting a "Hometown Con-test" with the winner winning a trip to his or her hometown.Practically everybody in So -Cal is from somewhere else. They'realways talking about "home," but they wouldn't go back thereto live for anything. Good gimmick from Manager Dale Petersonand PD Bill Thompson.
Not many artists with Grammy Awards in two categories. RogerMiller did, country and pop ... Old friend Billy Parker noted to ushis new Decca affiliation. Billy, longtime KFMJ (Tulsa) countryspinner, introduced "Thanks a Lot" to the world by Ernest Tubbon Leon McAuliffe's Cimarron label some five years ago. By theway, Leon, how about a copy of your clever "Playboy Page 14"thing? I've seen "picks" all over the place and I think the tune'scute as a bug, but it's hard to play without the record. Leonrecently reactivated his Cimarron label for McAulliffe Records.. . . Tom Brennen, long time So -Cal fave dj-personality, back inL.A. area after four long years. Welcome back, ole Tom!
Freddie Hart last week sat down to personally write C/W dj'sre his new exciter "Why Should I Cry?", and Fred reports themail has come rolling in already. Clyde also is making a most unusual offer to countrydjs all over regarding ownership -exposure of their instrument.Sounds like these guys are "gung-ho" with all 18 models, huh?

Stapp, KillenAcquire InterestIn Neal Agency
NASHVILLE - Jack Stappand Buddy Killen of Tree Pub-lishing Company, Inc. have ac-quired an interest in Bob NealAgency, Inc.
Tree is one of the oldest andmost successful publishing firmsin Nashville, having beenfounded in 1951. Bob NealAgency, headed by Bob Neal, was organized by Neal in 1963.
"The purchase of the interestin Bob Neal Agency has beendone as an investment," Stappand Killen stated. "We actuallyhave owned a licensed bookingagency for several years withAmerican Talent Corporation, but we have done nothing todevelop the agency. We feelthat our investment in Neal'sactive, fast-growing business isa wise one with the currentincrease in interest in countrymusic."
Stapp went on to point outthat the operation and man-agement of the Agency will re-main completely under the di-rection of Neal.
"As Jack pointed out, the op-eration of Bob Neal Agency willbe as an independent business,"Neal said, "and we will con-tinue to follow the plans wehave laid out for the growthof the Bob Neal Agency. Ourpersonnel will remain the sameand our office operation will re-main the same. Future plansdo call for the physical locationof our offices to be within thesame building as Tree, and wealso plan to merge operationwith American Talent Corp.
Asked about any connectionbetween the writing and musicpublishing careers of artists hehandles with Tree, Neal pointedout that a part of the agree-ment between the companiesmade it clear that any suchwork by artists was in no wayinvolved in the transaction."Several of my artists havetheir own publishing firms andwriting careers, and there isabsolutely no thought of anyinterference with these ca-reers," stated Neal.
"There is a great deal in theway of booking - television, motion pictures, and other areaswhere the surface has beenbarely scratched by countrymusic. Through Jack's connec-tions in the major markets andthrough radio and TV we hopeto be able to offer our artiststhe most complete managementand booking service availableand to be able to develop andcreate many new artists for thefield."

Congratulations to Bill Gavin and all concerned on the suc-cess of their radio programming conference in Chicago theweekend of March 26 and 27!
This was one of the most productive programming seminarsthis writer has ever had the opportunity to attend. Every facetof radio programming was covered and every man had his say.The general concensus of opinion was that most every type ofradio, with the exception of country and Western, is losing sharesof listeners. Those who are losing considerable shares werequick to concede that those shares are going mainly to countryand western radio and some to FM listening.
Stations like WJJD in Chicago, WPLO in Atlanta, WJRZ inNewark, KSON in San Diego, KGBS in Los Angeles, KRAK inSacramento, KAYO in Seattle and many other major marketshave made tremendous strides in gaining audiences and con-tinue to improve. Why all this has come about was the big, al-most unanswered question at the conference. For the most partit boiled down to the fact that country music radio today is asmodern and swinging as any other radio available. This, plusthe fact that most successful country music stations have donea tremendous job in promoting their product has gained themnot only a huge share of the listening audience but also afantastic new breed of national advertising accounts that, inthe past, had not once considered using country music radio toexpose their wares.
And they've found that it's paying off! Never has the oldcliche "country music is getting bigger" been more in evidenceas a hard down fact. And what compounds that fact is that somany of the nation's leading pop radio men are admitting it.
And now the word has leaked out that the great metropolitanmarket of Boston will soon be able to enjoy the sounds of afull-time country music station! There are not many majormarkets left, and soon they, too, will be able to listen to theirvery own country music radio station.
The Stonemans, most recent member of TVs growing familyof syndicated shows, will premiere the first week in May andfeature MGM Records' popular Stoneman Family. The new showwill initially be carried by 18 markets in the Southeast. Planscall for the show to be converted to all color production at alater date. Taping of the TVer is done at WSIX-TV here in MusicCity under the production of Bayron Binkley and the directionof Dallas Thomas. WLAC's Bob Jennings will be the show'sannouncer.
"McHale's Navy" will definitely not be shown on TV next fall. This word comes from Decca's Johnny Wright, father of BobbyWright, Hickory recording artist who plays the part of Willieon the show. Bobby, currently in Hollywood, intends to remainthere for the next few weeks to try out for a part in "The Vir-ginian" series.
Decca's Warner Mack is currently enjoying what looks likeone of the biggest records in his career. "Talking To The Wall"is hitting the charts everywhere and is now one of Decca's lead-ing country single sellers. On top of that, Warner will be heardon a new series of singing Coca-Cola commercials on all stationscarrying that account.
Monument's Jeannie Seely has the distinction of having hernew single, "Don't Touch Me" picked to hit in over 50 marketsthis past week! Of those 50, every major market was included.Chicago, Atlanta, Newark, Los Angeles, Houston, Portland, Akron-( leveland, Denver, Nashville and many others including a fewpop stations picked the little gal to go with this one. It's trulyone of the most outstanding female performances to come alongin many a moon.
The Wilburn Brothers are kept so busy on personal appear-ances that their secretary, Mary Frances Wright, is driving toKnoxville in order to see them. Their current tour, which openedin Alabama on March 24, will take them to Texas, Oklahoma,Tennessee and Virginia. Then, it's back to Texas and on toGeorgia, North Carolina, Maryland, and Pennsylvania. Once backin Nashville, Teddy and Doyle will tape future Wilburn BrothersTV shows.

Getting in Mood
Some musicians will do almostanything to get the "feel" of asong before trying to put it onrecord. The British -lookingbloke above is actually noneother than Nashvillian ChetAtkins, whose latest RCA Vic-tor album is "Chet AtkinsPicks on the Beatles."
