HOW DOES THE LREI

COMMUNITY SAYOur goal is to educate students to become independent thinkers and lifelong learners and to pursue academic excellence and individual achievement, in a context of respect for others and service to the community.

We believe that learning should be active and experiential, with the school providing abundant opportunities for students to excel. We accept students with a range of abilities and talents who can take full advantage of a rich and demanding academic program in which each student is both challenged and supported.

We seek to create within the school a community built on understanding and respecting others. Thus, our student body traditionally reflects the racial and cultural diversity of our city, and our curriculum is built on interdisciplinary studies to promote understanding of many cultures. While individual achievement is encouraged and rewarded, our program underscores the value of shared goals, friendship and cooperation in mastering difficult tasks.

The progressive ideals that in 1921 gave life and inspiration to the school—academic excellence and creativity, active learning and innovative teaching, respect for the individual and responsibility to the community—continue to guide the school today.

Dear LREI Community,

I want to express my heartfelt gratitude to you: our parents, alumni, trustees, grandparents, alumni parents, faculty, staff, and friends. Your belief in LREI and your commitment to our progressive program is captured in the unprecedented achievements of the 2013-2014 school year.

More volunteers than ever worked together to raise a record $1.23 million in direct contributions to the Annual Fund, with parent participation holding steady at 82 percent – thank you! Over 475 people attended our biennial Art Auction, which realized gross proceeds of close to $170,000, also a first for us. And finally, our Building for Action

Campaign raised funds in excess of our $25 million goal! Indeed, there is much for which to be grateful.

Your support ensures that LREI can remain a leader among New York City independent schools in providing financial aid to our students, while also offering an innovative curriculum and retaining our remarkable faculty.

After one year of community conversations, meetings and planning, we shared our strategic plan and identified LREI’s current and future priorities in four areas: students & learning, faculty & innovation, school & community and financial foundation. It is an exciting and ambitious plan, and I encourage you to refresh your understanding of the direction we are headed together by reviewing the plan on our website, lrei.org/strategic_plan.

Finally, I am thrilled to report that LREI achieved an historic milestone with the increased enrollment reached in the 2013-2014 school year.

None of this would be possible without Phil’s leadership, the three principals’ dedication, and the faculty, administration, and staff’s efforts to make LREI the wonderful school it is. On behalf of all the trustees, thank you for all that you gave to the school this year.

Dear Friends,

Thank you. Thank you to the current LREI parents who entrust us with their children each day and who support the school’s programs through the annual fund and through the work of the Parents Association. Thank you to the alumni, and to alumni parents, whose participation in the school is an affirmation of the long-lasting impact of a progressive education. Thank you to the friends of the school whose steadfast support is essential to our ongoing success. Thank you to LREI’s trustees who are generous with the school in so many ways, ensuring that we will continue to be our best institutional self into the future. Thank you to the faculty and staff whose work, each day, enriches the lives, present and future, of LREI’s 650 students.

Your support of LREI’s Annual Fund allows us to continue to fulfill the promises that Elisabeth Irwin made when she founded the school over 90 years ago. Your support allows us to fill the school with families that bring a diversity and vitality to the community without which our classrooms would not have the dynamism that is essential to progressive education. Your support allows our teachers to explore new ideas and to lead the educational discussion much the way Elisabeth Irwin did. Your support allows our students to experience the world, rather than to just read about it.
