South West Beacon provider wins Global Award S&B Automotive Academy, who are an LSIS Beacon provider based in Bristol have won a

Bronze award at the annual IMS Global Learning impact Awards. The IMS awards are designed to recognize those initiatives which have the greatest impact on the use of technology worldwide in support of learning. S&B were selected to showcase their developments at the annual Learning Impact conference in Long Beach, California! S&B won the award for their highly innovative work with NetCam technology, which was the focus of two projects, generally know as the Jericho projects. Firstly their work with employers, apprentices and their awarding body the IMI, which has resulted in the practical application of NetCam technology i.e.

carrying out remote competence assessments within the workplace via an internet connection without the assessor being present.

S&B would like to thank all those organisations who have supported these developments, including members of the Jericho project, members of the Western Training Provider network and LSIS who have supported the development through a successful application for funding under its Flexibility and Innovation Fund (FIF) programme. S&B would also like to offer special thanks to the JISC Advance Regional Support Centre South West and David Rowe its e Learning Adviser for Work based Learning, for the invaluable support ‐ ‐and assistance with both the Jericho project and the IMS Global award application process.

NetCam has featured highly and been showcased in the region including a live assessment demonstration at last year’s SW Learning Fair.

Improvement Adviser Service (IAS)The IAS offers a range of support to enable providers to improve their provision through the use of specialist Advisers, High Quality Managers or Beacon providers with relevant skills and expertise. All Advisers are experts in quality improvement.

The Further Education and Skills Sector in 2020: A Social Productivity ApproachLSIS commissioned the 2020 Public Services Hub to undertake this report specifically to develop independent thinking on possible long term futures for further education and skills. The contents and conclusions of the report are therefore those of the authors, and not of LSIS.

The report includes interviews with over 30 stakeholders, including case studies in three city regions (Bristol, Nottingham and Manchester). It reveals a sector wary of the further encroachment of market mechanisms and critical of reductions in public funding, yet also enjoying a new culture of flexibility, entrepreneurialism and open practice

Community Development ToolkitFollowing the first year of scanning the sector and its activities relating to community development, we hope to provide more strategic support through a community development toolkit. The toolkit will help organisations develop their own community development strategies, together with providing products and examples of good practice across the sector to support implementation of community development initiatives. The LSIS community development advisory group will be considering the shape of the toolkit in their June meeting.

Healthy FELSIS has now taken over the ownership of this programme and hope to have the website fully operational again soon.

LSIS has established a Policy Group to ensure that the work remains linked to government policy. The Policy Group is chaired by Linda Houtby, Principal of Grantham College and has membership from DH, DWP, DfE and BIS. There is also an Implementation and Development Group chaired by Tamsin Jones, Vice Principal at Croydon College and with membership of key practitioners from across the sector.

We are also piloting the use of Healthy FE Tools with WBL, ACL and Offender Learning and expect to have the first prison recognised as a Healthy FE provider in the next few weeks.
