Elizabeth Wong used a first person point of view, and figurative language style to reveal her
change of tone from ashamed to regretful. In paragraph 4, she said, “The room smelled like Chinese
medicine, an important faraway mustiness.” She used “like” to compare the smell of the Chinese
school’s room to Chinese medicine, which is a simile. This helped her express her shame in going to a
Chinese school. Wong, in paragraph 9, also said, “I did not want to be thought of as mad, as talking
gibberish.” She used “as” to compare the Chinese language to gibberish, which is a simile. This shows
her embarrassment in the Chinese language. In addition, in paragraph 12, Wong said, “At last I was one
of you; I was not one of them. Sadly, I still am.” Here, Wong used first person point of view, like using
“I”, well to show her regret in not appreciating her Chinese culture. In conclusion, Elizabeth Wong
showed her change of tone from ashamed to regretful by using a first person point of view, and
figurative language style.
