LSU AgCenter Beef Cattle Fact Sheet “EPDs for Improved Genetics and Profit Increase” Tim G. Page, Ph.D. Expected progeny differences (EPDs) provide estimates of the genetic value of an animal as a sire or dam. The difference in EPDs between two animals of the same breed can predict differences in performance between their future offspring . Some of the EPDs are for birth, growth, maternal, and carcass traits. EPDs may be directly compared only between cattle of the same breed. EPDs are expressed in units of measure for the trait, either plus or minus. You cannot compare Angus EPDs to Hereford EPDs. EPD Accuracy refers to the reliability that can be placed on the EPD. An accuracy close to 1.0 indicates higher reliability. Accuracy is impacted by the number of progeny and ancestral records included in the analysis. The more calves that a bull has produced, the higher the accuracy for those EPDs. A young bull will have relatively low accuracy compared to older bulls that have produced calves. It is important that you remember to only purchase virgin bulls to prevent introducing STDs into your herd. Even though the virgin bulls will not have high accuracy, their EPDs still are critical in selection and purchase of new bulls. If you use artificial insemination on your operation, then you can select semen from older bulls that have higher accuracy for their EPDs. No matter what your objectives are for your cattle operation, the following EPDs should be considered when purchasing new genetics. Some of the more important production EPDs are Calving Ease Direct (CED), Birth Weight (BW), Weaning Weight (WW), Yearling Weight (YW), Scrotal Circumference (SC), and Docility (DOC). Maternal EPDs that need to be considered are Calving Ease Maternal (CEM), Maternal Milk (MM, milk and mothering ability), and Heifer Pregnancy (HP). Some carcass EPDs are Marbling (Marb), Ribeye Area (RE), and
