    3.1.3 Design Power Stage Components

Part I of the Design Spreadsheet helps the user to design or choose the power stage componentsand evaluate the performance.

The design specifications entered by the user in the search page will be automatically transferred tothis program. According to this design specification, the Design Spreadsheet will suggest optimizedcomponent values such as inductance and resistance for user reference. The user needs to fill in theactual component values or choose them from the component library (please see Appendix for detail).

After the user chooses the actual component, the circuit design key performance parameters, suchas output voltage ripple, will be calculated and displayed for the user to evaluate. Also the user cansimulate the circuit performance by exporting the design to the LTspice

    TMsimulation tool by simply

clicking the Export to LTspice button (please see Appendix for details).

The values/descriptions in yellow background cells are calculated / recommended by the LTpower-

CAD design tool. They cannot be modified by users. On the other hand, the values in blue back-

ground cells need to be entered by the user for their specific designs.

In a design spreadsheet, sometimes a cell value appears in RED font. This usually means that there

is a warning. The LTpowerCAD design tool often recommends the typical component values with

lower/upper limits. If the value entered by the user is outside the range of LTpowerCAD design

tools recommendations, the program shows related circuit values in RED as a warning. In this case,

the warning does not cause any malfunction of the design tool. However, the supply designer should

consider whether s/he really wants to keep the current value or follow the value recommended by the

    LTpowerCAD design tool.

    3.1.4 Design Compensation Loop

After determining the power stage components, Part II of the design sheet helps users to optimize the

feedback loop design. The user can enter desired loop bandwidth and phase margin and let the pro-

gram suggest the compensation network values. Or, the user can simply adjust the sliding bars for

the compensation component values and check the resulting loop gain Bode Plot and load transient

    performance.

    3.1.5 Wrap-Up and Summary

Once a design is complete, the Summary worksheet shows the key power component values and

a list of a simple Bill-of-Materials (BOM). The Summaryworksheet also helps the user to estimate

the total cost and board footprint of the power train.

The user could also use the Notes worksheet to record any information they want to keep.

5 APPENDI X5.1 LOAD TRANSIENT PREDICTION

The design tool program provides an approximation of the output voltage overshoot/undershootwaveform during load transients. This approximation is calculated based on the average small-signalmodel of the power supply. Therefore, it does NOT take into consideration possible large-signal non-linear effects that may exist in the real experimental test with a large and very fast load step. In reality, sometimes the overshoot/undershoot is higher than the small-signal estimation. Even so the transientwaveforms give the designer a good starting point to estimate the output voltage over-shoot/undershoot and required minimum output capacitance. To verify the design, it is important andrecommended to actually build the circuit and evaluate its performance.

The output transient waveform is the averaged waveform over a switching cycle. The switching fre-quency ripple is not included in this waveform. The user also needs to include the switching ripple forthe total transient spike.

    5.2 LTSPICETMSIMULATION

The LTpowerCAD Design Tool offers users the ability to simulate their designed circuits with theLTspice simulator, which is real-time simulation software that can be downloaded freely at the fol-lowing URL: http://www.linear.com/designtools/software/ltspice.jsp.

In the design spreadsheet, there is an Export to LTspice button, usually located close to the circuitdiagram in Part I. Clicking on this button brings up an Export LTspice file as window, which allowsusers to name and save their designs into an .asc file. An .asc file can be read and simulated bythe LTspice simulator. The design tool automatically transfers all the component values to the .ascfile.

    ExporttoLTspiceSimulation

  • 8/13/2019 Lt Power Cad Help

    21/28

After saving the LTspice simulation file, the design tool will ask if the LTspice simulator is already

installed. If yes, the design tool opens the LTspice simulator. Then by clicking the RUN button andclicking the node to see the voltage waveform in the LTspice simulator, users can observe the per-formance of their designed circuits in both steady state and transient modes.

    5.3 COMPONENT LIBRARY

The component library provides a convenient interface between the design programs and a list ofpopular components. Inside the LTpowerCAD design tool package, there are two standard libra-ries: the capacitor library with file extension .xcap, and the inductor library with file extension .xind.Please do NOT change the file type of these library files.

To access the component libraries during designs, click on a capacitor or inductor symbol that is hig-hlighted in blue; a window will pop up. Selecting the Add this component to the library button al-lows you to copy the parameters of a chosen capacitor or inductor to the corresponding library for

  • 8/13/2019 Lt Power Cad Help

    22/28

later use. Selecting the Find a component from the library button allows you to select a compo-nent from a standard library and copy its parameter to the current design spreadsheet.

After selecting either Add this component to the library or Find a component from the library, the program will ask you to select a component library to open. If a correct library file is already open,it will be listed in the white box. In this case, select a library from the list and click on the Go to Li-brary button activates this library. If no component library is open, please click on the Open Li-brary button and an Open Librarywindow will show for you to specify the library file that you wishto open. Please note that only an .xcap file can be specified as a capacitor library, and only a .xindfile can be specified as an inductor library. The default capacitor library is located at\LTpowerCAD\LTClib\Standard.xcap; the default inductor library is located at\LTpowerCAD\LTClib\Standard.xind.

After an appropriate component library file has been opened, if Add this component to the librarywas selected earlier, then the spreadsheet component parameters will be automatically transferred tothe library file. If Find a component from the library was selected, then clicking on any row of thelibrary sheet will enable you to copy it to the design spreadsheet.

The standard.xcapand standard.xindfiles can be duplicated as long as they keep the same file ex-tension. The duplicated files can also interface with a design spreadsheet as described above. In ad-dition, the library files can be opened independently, allowing users to edit or add components freely.
