LiteracyReading Activities

1. As our topic is mini beasts let’s read the ebook ‘Big, Bad Bug’ on Oxford Owl.

2. Let’s see if we can read words with our double sounds/phonemes ‘th’, ‘sh’, ‘ch’ and ‘ng’. Play the Topmarks game ’Help the Hedgehog’. Choose phase 3 option with these 4 sounds/phonemes.

3. When your adult is reading you your bedtime story see if you can read any common words in the book. You might even be able to read a full sentence. I bet they will be super impressed!

Spelling Activities

1. Look at the list of common words you got in your pack. Read them and then can you spell them out to your adult. Here’s Jack Hartmann to help you out with some of your common sight words. Remember shout and spell them out with Jack!

2. ‘ng’ was our new sound last week. Continue singing the ng song, doing the action, writing the sound and thinking of lots of ‘ng’ words. Practice makes perfect.

3. Very often we muddle ‘b’, ‘d’ and ‘p’ up. Play this top marks game ‘Fishing Bowl’ to reinforce these letters/sounds.

Writing Activities

1. Pick one of your sentences of the week from your first home learning pack then copy it and draw a picture that matches it. Remember green capital letter and red full stop.

2. Chose a day this week and write a sentence about what you got up to. For example:- On Tuesday I went for a bike ride and I loved it. Remember it is ok to scribe your child’s sentence and have them copy it then draw a picture.

3. Think of 3 of your ‘ng’ words and write a sentence for each of them. Remember green capital letter and red full stop.

Numeracy

1. Why don’t you try and complete some of the numbers 11-20 sheets that came inside your learning packs? Remember there are lots of ways to record numbers. You can write the number, write the number word, find it on a number line, use tally marks, show it on a ten frame or find objects that represent it. Give it a go!

2. Have a go at a game of ‘Shape Tap’? Get someone to call out the name of a shape and then you walk round the room and tap all the things that are that shape! You might want to try and find squares, circles, triangles, rectangles and any others you can think of. Remember if grown ups are busy you could play by yourself and then show them what you found when they have some time. I wonder if you could find other shapes too?

3. We have been learning to find one more and one less than a number up to 20. Remember when you are doing this to keep the number in your head and count backwards or forward. Try the sheet attatched or ask someone to give you some numbers to try!

Health and Wellbeing

1. Being at home just now is the perfect time to challenge yourself to learn some new skills. Have a look at the 30 Day Life Skills Challenge grid attached and see if there are any you would like to try and complete. It might be learning how to set the table or learning how to hang your clothes up! You decide! (link in P1 Home Learning)

2. Some of us have been joining in with Joe Wicks or dancing with Oti but why don’t we try to make up our own fitness routine? Use the cards to help you with some ideas and you could maybe teach some of your family some exercises. You are the new P.E teacher in KPS! (link in P1 Home Learning)

3. Everyone is feeling a little different just now. Some days we feel happy and other days maybe worried. Why don’t you make a Mood Monster to explain how you feel. You can draw your monster, make it from any old boxes or use the template included. What character will you make happy, sad, angry or maybe even an excited Mood Monster? (link in P1 Home Learning)

Learning Across the CurriculumTopic – Minibeasts

1. Raid the recycling and use what you find to make a model of a minibeast from junk! Will you recreate something you’ve seen outside or use your imagination to invent a new minibeast? Here are some pictures to give you some ideas and as always we would love to see your models on Twitter and Teams!

2. Let’s learn about the life cycle of a butterfly! Look at butterfly PowerPoint to find out the whole process and then complete the life cycle cut and stick activity. It will look fabulous displayed in your room! (link in P1 Home Learning)

3. We LOVE hats and masks in Primary 1 and are missing making them with you! So why don’t you choose one of these minibeast pictures, colour it and put it on a stick or string to make it into mask. Or make it into a hat by wrapping a band of paper round your head and attaching the picture to the front. We can’t wait to see pictures of them! (link in P1 Home Learning)

Technologies & Science1. Minibeasts love to visit gardens and window ledges. Why not build a bug

hotel to entice them to stay! Using an old tub or box, fill it with moss, leaves, sticks and pinecones- minibeasts love to hide in all of these materials. Then keep an eye out and see if anyone decides to make your bug hotel their home! Visit the RSPB website for more helpful hints and tips for making your Minibeast retreat!

2. Explore the different habitats that different minibeasts like to call home. Play the starter activity and main session 1 on this webpage to explore the appearance of different minibeasts and the places they like to live.

3. If you’re lucky enough to have some seeds (keep an eye out for your next home learning pack😉)- get planting and watch how your seed changes into a seedling and then (hopefully) grows into a plant. If you don’t have any seeds- don’t worry. Have a look outside – in the garden or on a walk and chose a plant to investigate. Try and look at it every day to see how it changes as the days go by. Does it grow taller, wider, blossom flowers or fruits? Can you spot any minibeasts in particular who like your plant? Take some pictures and show us on Twitter/Teams and see if we can identify

what type of plant it is!
