He is creating a legacy that will shape the Jewish world for generations to come. CJP is not your grandfather’s Federation. It is much more active in promoting serious Jewish life and learning and helped to create a great Jewish experience for all of us in Boston. CJP always has and always will deserve our support. But so much of its strength goes to the efforts of Barry Shrage, whom we honor this week. [THE LUACHThe Newsletter of Temple Israel of Sharon, a traditional egalitarian community May/June 2014

From the Rabbi’s DeskAs you receive this, I am honored to announce that on Sunday, May 6, the Jewish community of Boston will honor Barry Shrage, the Executive Director of Combined Jewish Philanthropies, for 25 years of service to our community and the Jewish People. While he will continue to serve the community, this day provides an opportunity for a collective show of appreciation to him for his tireless efforts. The day will feature learning opportunities, a particularly poignant theme for such an event given his commitment to adult learning throughout his distinguished career. But Barry Shrage is about more than adult learning, and I want to take this moment to acknowledge his contribution to Jewish life and to the Jews of Boston.

When I was growing-up there was, in many communities, little cooperation between synagogues and the Jewish Federations. Often they were seen as competing for the same dollars and leadership. The value of the synagogue was not recognized by many Federation directors and staff. Federations believed that they represented the voice of the Jewish community and that supporting synagogues, which had their own means of funding, was irrelevant. Furthermore, Federations saw themselves as organizing the service area of the Jewish community and did not see their role in fostering Jewish knowledge and education as central.

Then along came Barry Shrage – a visionary, a committed Jew, and a strong advocate for the very ideals that we now know are crucial to Jewish survival. Under his leadership, the Boston Federation, CJP, has taken the lead among its peers in supporting serious Jewish learning for all ages. Under his leadership, CJP has expanded greatly its outreach to synagogues and its recognition of the primacy of synagogue involvement for the evolution of a strong Jewish future. Under his leadership, CJP has become a model for Federations throughout the country and the Boston Jewish community has grown in stature

and strength in ways that we can hardly imagine. All this and so much more due to strong lay leadership and Barry’s tireless efforts on behalf of all Jews, but especially the community of Boston Jewry.

We rabbis often speak of what one person can do to change the world. Barry Shrage is an example of what we mean. He has helped to change the landscape of the community, and his life’s work to strengthen the Jewish people and see us flourish has born incredible fruit. And he does all this without fanfare, with humility, and with a personality that exudes warmth and caring in a world sorely in need of such caring. He has made our CJP one of the great Jewish organizations in the world, and for that we salute him.

Personally, I have come to know Barry Shrage over the years and appreciate everything that he stands for and the way he has influenced all of our lives. It has been an honor to work with him to bring vitality and energy to the Jewish community. I wish him continued success on behalf of all of you who have benefitted from his work here.

I pray that he will have the strength to continue his groundbreaking efforts and that the Almighty will bless him with the knowledge of just how much he is appreciated by all of us.

B’shalom, Rabbi Barry Starr

Cantor’s NotesOn behalf of our family, my husband and I wish to express our heartfelt appreciation for your visits, telephone calls, notes, charitable donations, and other gestures of kindness prior to and following the passing of my father, Ir-ving Hershman, z”l. My Dad was a loyal member of Temple Israel for 54 years. He served our country in WWII and was a deserving recipient of a Purple

Heart. My Dad will be remembered for many things, but especially for being a loving husband, a devoted father to my siblings and me, and a proud Grandpa to his grandchildren. Jewish life was a central part of his life, and many of his values will surely live on as a blessing in our family, and, we pray, for generations to come. T’N’TZ’B’H’ (may his soul be bundled in the budle of life).Myrna Dress

President’s MessageMarch, oh March... Wonderful March! At this time of year we prepare Temple Is-rael’s annual budget. So many caring and concerned members are involved in this challenging task. We brought our “unbal-anced budget” to the Board of Trustees asking for guidance, support and answers. So we adjusted, tweaked and massaged the budget, knowing that our ability to offer a variety of dynamic programs and unique services is based on the level of commitment demonstrated by our mem-bers. We cut the budget wherever pos-sible, reducing spending as much as we could. But our situation is this: increased revenue is needed to continue to thrive as we have in the past. Should we eliminate programs and staff? I think not. Our Community, Our Commitment. April... The Commitments – sounds like a pop band from my former days in the music business. But no, in April we sent out our annual “Commitment Letter” to you, our members. We asked you once again to consider these questions: What do you value in a community? What do you value at Temple Israel? How can Temple Israel support your growth and community connections? We are proud to offer a Commitment System that allows each member to pick an amount with which she/he is comfortable without hav-ing to provide any justification for their choice. We can only continue to offer this alternate dues system if everyone pitches in to the best of their ability. As you are reading this, you have already received your letter. My hope is that you examine

your unique circumstances and relation-ship to this special place, your synagogue community. By increasing your Annual Commitment, you help Temple Israel promote a community which supports and nurtures families, youth and seniors. It is your investment in Temple Israel that allows us to continue to exist and flour-ish. “All life is an experiment. The more experiments you make, the better” (Ralph Waldo Emerson). The past sev-eral months have seen us try out new programs, unique prayer services, and innovative incentives to welcome new families into our TI home. We are happy to announce the formal launch of the After School Adventures (ASA) program. A number of families have already signed up and we anticipate sufficient enroll-ment in the fall when it rolls out. We will engage a program director to lead this exciting venture, which is open to the entire Sharon community. Many thanks to Lisa Kritz, Alisa Levine and Marion Gribetz for organizing and seeing to it that ASA becomes a reality! Don’t forget, on May 18th we are looking forward to celebrating Lisa Kritz for her 25 years of dedicated leadership of Hertz Nursery School. We also extend thanks to Susan Cetlin and the Tiferet Committee for the latest in the Soulful Shabbos series. Judy Kaye and Bruce Phillips led 80 congregants, including many multi-generational fami-lies, in a lively and meditative Shabbat drumming and chanting service. We are grateful to Mark Levitt and his

leadership of the Ritual Committee and to Rabbi Ed Gelb for continuing to lead the delightful “camp style” services that are so well attended and such a success. Members come together from both our traditional service and our experiments to enjoy Shabbat Kiddush together after attending the service of their choice. The Brotherhood, Sisterhood, Member-ship and Cultural Arts Committees host-ed a terrific spring dance n’ schmooze…it was a great night and we look forward to doing it again. It’s Your Party was also a great success this year-- many thanks to Neil Aronson, Lois Freedman, and Denise Gray for spearheading the event. Social Action’s “Mitzvah Day,” coordi-nated by Amy Katz and Marcy Kaplan, in partnership with the CHAI South Area Temple Collaboration – great to see so many parts of our community pitch in and “make a difference.” And we just keep going… We wish you all a productive spring and a glorious summer. Look for my next article in the September issue of the Luach!Arnie Freedman

Religious School“That was the best day of Religious School EVER!” I overheard this over and over from students on Sunday, April 6. The South Area Mitzvah Day, a kitah dalet (grade 4) family seder, and Rosh Hodesh activities made the day one to remem-ber. Jewish education should always strive not only to activate children’s minds, but also to engage their hearts and hands. Creating positive Jewish memories is what it’s really all about. It’s hard to believe that our 5774 Religious School year is wind-ing down. This year, in every grade, we focused on the impor-tance of blessings, thanks, and miracles. I really do believe that students gained an appreciation for some of the little things that are easily taken for granted and often go unnoticed. On Monday and Thursday afternoons, it has become our practice as a Religious School kehillah (community) to spend the last fifteen minutes of the day in the sanctuary. This closing service is devoted to b’rachot (blessings) and hoda’ot (thanks). Teach-ers and I have been impressed by the seriousness of even our youngest students this year and their sensitive approach to this shared experience. Particularly noteworthy is the way in which our kitah dalet students have “adopted” kitah aleph (grade 1) students, sitting next to them in the sanctuary and mentoring them in their reading skills. Highlights of this year are too many to list, but my sincere

thanks and a huge kol ha’kavod (with all due respect) to our amazing group of teachers: K-2 team, Jill Grasfield, Sharon

Weinberg, and Joy Almekies; grades 3-5 team, Elaine Glick, Simmie Hefetz, Rina Holtzman, Shayna Yar-mush, Sharon Weinberg, and Barbara; and grades 6-7 team, Rabbi Starr, Cantor Dress,

Elaine Glick, Miriam Spitzer, Rina Holtzman, Leah Sherman, and Cindy Kaplan. Thanks also to our Sunday music specialist, Debbie Moukit; our weekday reading specialists, Rabbi Spitzer and Paula Lawless; and to our kitah vov (grade 6) Rosh Hodesh leaders, Shoshana Czik and Jesse Wolf. Thanks, too, to our de-voted team of classroom volunteer aides: Barb Porter, Amanda Kaplan, Jennifer Gray, Shira Stoller, Lia Almekies, Shira Moukit, Robin Dubinsky, and Rachel Porter. All are invited to join us on Sunday, June 1, for our second an-nual closing assembly. In addition to noting the blessings and giving thanks for this year, we will welcome prospective new students and plant seeds filled with promise for the year ahead! Please remember that registration for the 2014-2015 Religious School year is now open. YouthHello USYers and Families! It’s hard to believe that we have already reached the end of an-other year in USY—the year went by so quickly. These past few months have been great! We did an AMAZING job at our Purim carnival, seeing tons of families and bringing in a good amount of money for USY programs and our TIkkun Olam Fund. In April, we had perfect weather for watching the Red Sox play the Brewers with all of NERUSY, and our Senior USYers got to blast each other all night long in a laser tag lock-in with four other USY chapters. May and June are shaping up to be a great wrap-up!In May, all 1st-5th graders are invited to join us at Launch Trampoline Park in Norwood for a combined Kadima/Katanim event. We are inviting our first grade friends to join us so they can get a taste of what we have planned for them next year. For Junior and Senior USYers, we will be heading to Auburn-dale to go kayaking on the Charles. Afterwards, we will head to 16 Handles for some delicious ice cream. Then, in June, we are once again gearing up for a two-day all USY end of the year event. Last year, we brought you Camp SUSY and Color War. This year, all of USY will solve the mys-tery of “WHO STOLE STACY?” Apparently, I have gone miss-ing, and it’s up to the USYers to find out who took me, where I am, and how I got there! USYers will meet at Temple Israel,

be split into crime-solving teams, and use all of their puzzle solving, game playing, and athletic skills to (hopefully) find me! The winner will be announced at our end of year banquet the following evening. I hope that your children and teens will join us for a fantastic finale to a great year!Kol Tuv, Stacy Weinberg

Hertz Nursery School It is hard to believe that another school year is drawing to a close. We have had a wonderful year of sharing, growth, and new ideas. We are blessed to have a warm community to grow in. I want to thank the community for honoring me on May 18 for my years at Hertz. It has been a wonderful journey, both professionally and personally. I hope to continue for many more years. Some highlights over the years include the ‘new’ Hertz space in 1994, our wonderful playground makeover, an amazing staff I have had the pleasure to call friends, and the many families I have met along the way.Hertz launched a new website, still found at hertznurseryschool.org, but with a whole new look thanks to Lisa and Evan Einstein.

A special thank you to outgoing president Karen Binder, who has given so much of her time to the board and school. We are excited that Karen is a part of our staff so she will not be going far! Many thanks to the Temple Israel board, administration, and professional staff for their continued support this year. It is

very exciting that every Hertz family can become a member of Temple Israel for one complimentary year. Temple Israel has embraced young families and made us feel very connected to the community at large.Hertz will host a new summer program on Tuesdays and Thursdays in July, a

“playgroup” for incoming three year olds. There are still a few spots avail-able if you’d like to join the fun.We have limited space available in our three- and four-year-old pro-gram for the fall, and the transitional kindergarten class has openings. We are excited to offer families the new After School Adventures (ASA) pro-gram for longer days as well. Spread the word! Lisa Kritz

Israel Affairs As the cold snows of winter become the warm rains of spring, our thoughts turn from indoors to outdoors. With this turn of seasons comes a natural shift in our attention to the joys of summer and the pleasure of the outdoors.

Although the seasons change, the Middle East, unfortunately, remains static. At this writing we don’t yet know if the peace talks with the Palestinians will continue, if the war in Syria will spill over to its neighbors (just last week a roadside bomb exploded near an Israeli patrol and the Syrian army attacked two villages on the Lebanese side of the border), what the elections in Egypt and the trial of ex-President Morsi will bring, or what Iran will do in terms of truly stopping or instead tricking the West regarding its nuclear program.

About the only thing we do know is that there is only one democratic, free, true friend of the United States in the region and that is Israel! Throughout all the turmoil of the last 60 years – from the Cold War with the Soviets to the struggle for global human rights to the many relief missions that Israel has sent around the world in times of disaster – only Israel and the United States consistently stand for what is right and just.

Yes, there are tough spots and there have been times of tension – particularly as it relates to the ongoing conflict with the Palestinians. As both countries navigate the difficult waters of peacemaking, we, as American Jews, must support the safety and security of Israel and allow those who have the most at stake, the Israelis, to determine what is best through the practice of their democracy (the only true democracy in the

Middle East).

How can we support Israel in its quest for peace? Well, that’s pretty easy: not telling Israelis what to do and what deal to take on one side of the spectrum; and supporting our elected representatives in their support of United States foreign policy to achieve a just and long lasting solution to the Middle East conflict.

One of the best ways to show your support, without telling Israel what to do, is to join AIPAC (American Israel Public Affairs Committee). AIPAC is an organization that is non-partisan, has real clout, and can make a difference. AIPAC has a long track record of success in navigating the swirling waters of politics – always staying above the fray. In fact, AIPAC

never supports anything unless it is co-sponsored by both a member of the Democratic Party and the Republican Party.

Ask any of the nearly 40 members of Temple Israel who attended the recent AIPAC Policy Conference in Washington what they think. I am sure that after five minutes you will want to sign-up and make your voice heard! Convinced? If you would like to attend the 2015 Conference at a reduced rate, please see Rabbi Starr or Dan Laby.

COMMUNITY Sisterhood Mishpacha, family, is the Women’s League of Conservative Judaism’s theme for the year. We hope that you and your own mishpacha enjoyed gathering together at the seder table, recalling the Passover teachings, and sharing and appreciating the good fortunes we all have as families and as part of a greater community. We are also fortunate to have a wonderful group of dedicated, creative, and committed volunteers in our own Sisterhood. We are honoring one of these individuals, Roberta “Bobbie” Becker, as our Light of Torah/Woman of Distinction on Sunday, May 4 at Temple Israel. Light of Torah gives our own Sisterhood the opportunity to honor one of our own and donate to the Torah Fund Campaign of the Women’s League of Conservative Judaism, supporting our students and the institutions that give them the very best Conservative/Masorti Jewish education so that our teachings and traditions may be passed on from generation to generation. We hope to see you here on May 4 or at a future event of the Sisterhood of Temple Israel.

Koach Our Koach College Connection committee sends fun, holiday-related, small gifts and cards to our college undergrads throughout the year. In order to have your college student included in our mailings, please fill out the form at www.tisharon.org/koach. This information needs to be updated each year.

As our kids work hard at college and connect with exciting new people and ideas, our mailings remind them that they continue to be an important part of our Temple Israel family. Our packages generate smiles and appreciation as they help our kids remain connected to our wonderful community and beautiful

traditions. Once you provide the requested information, we will include your children in our mailings for this year.

The deadline for the next mailing is September 15. Please send the information as soon as possible for the Fall 2014 semester.

Please notify the office or send an email to [email protected] if a student’s address changes during the year or if their study abroad plans change. Please note that we are unable to send packages to students studying abroad due to high postage costs, and that this program is for children of Temple Israel members only (no grandchildren, sorry).

Literacy Team The school year is winding down and I want to take this time to thank our veteran and new tutors for all the time and effort they put in helping their students find pleasure in reading while improving their fluency and comprehension. Our tutors at the Kennedy School in Brockton are Ruth Abbott, Sue Fishman (who is my co-team leader), Denise Gray, Ilene Greenwald, Evelyn Lang, Christine Liljegren, Dr. Jay Schwab, and Jeff Shapiro.

If you are interested in becoming a member of our team, contact me through the temple office and visit www.tisharon.org/GBJCL.

May 6, 13, 20; 7:45 pm: Judy Kaye and Bruce Phil-ips, who led the beautiful chanting and drumming Soulful Shabbos service at Temple Israel on March 22, will be offering a chanting workshop at Temple Beth Emanu-el in Providence on Tuesday nights in May. Jewish chanting is the practice of taking short

passages from our Torah or liturgy, adding music and rhythm, and repeating them in order to explore their insights and mine their spiri-tual power. Please sign up! If a group from Temple Israel could learn the chants, we then would be able to bring them back to create our own regular Soulful Shabbos chanting service here. No experience in singing or Jewish text study is required. To register, email Rabbi Elan Babchuck ([email protected]). If you are signing up, please let Shoshana Cetlin know and we could arrange a carpool from Sharon.

COMMUNITY

After School Adventures will provide afternoon extended care and enrichment programs for the community. Hours of operation will be 3:00-6:00pm, five days a week, school year, to include preschool through Grade 5. (Hertz will open at 7:30am for Hertz students!)

An exciting component is the introduction of enrichment programs, such as music, arts, yoga, math enrichment, home-work group, outdoor science exploration, and more. Pro-grams will be offered on secular holidays and school vacation weeks! For convenience, school buses will bring children to Temple Israel from Sharon Public Schools.

See www.tisharon.org/AfterSchoolAdventures for registration, pricing, and more!

Brotherhood Shalom. I write this note on erev Pesach, where we celebrate our coming out of bondage and begin our journey to Sinai. We all remember our redemption from bondage through the Passover seder as we recite the story of the Exodus. We are taught that this is not to be a story of someone else, but that we, ourselves, are redeemed. It’s also the one-year anniversary of the Boston Marathon bombings, and just yesterday an anti-Semitic shooting at the a JCC and Jewish retirement home in a Kansans City suburb. Dark times. As we recall our journey from bondage to freedom, from dark-

ness to light, we in the Brotherhood remind everyone that the Brotherhood is once again providing each family in the Temple Israel community with a Yom HaShoah (Holocaust Remebrance Day) candle. This year the candles display new artwork, evoking the spirit of remembrance. This year, we in the Brotherhood ask you to take the time to remember the Shoah. This year we ask you to talk to your kids, remind them that they too came out of bondage. And this year we ask you light the candle and once again go from darkness to light.B’shalom, Ron Czik
