Fresh water supplies at sea Gilbert Gilkes & Gordon has met the requirements of marine equipment manufacturer Ham- worthy Marine, to supply eight T-Series vertical in-line centri- fugal pumps for circulating fresh water on board a ship. liamworthy Marine ap- proached Gilkes to supply the pumps for this customer appli- cation as they did not have this pa~icular unit within its own range. Operating with a pres- sure of 25 m3/h with a total head of 55 m via horizontal pipes, the pumps are fitted and driven by 11 kW ABB elec- tric motors at 1750 rpm and braced by a spacer coupling. The rotating assembly can be removed without dismantling the pump or electric motor. As the pump operates as a vertical unit, vital space savings are achieved in the restricted space on board. Self Priming is not a normal feature of the T-Series but where water needs to be raised upwards, a self priming action is required to bleed the pump of air. In order to make the pumps self-priming, Hamworthy sup- plied its own special automatic air ejector primers. Contact: Gilbert Gilkes & Gor- don Ltd, Kendal, Cumbria LA9 7BZ, UK. Glassflake coating protects effluent sump A high performance glass flake coating, supplied by ITW Ir- athane, has been employed to pro~ide protection against cor- rosion in a 30 m 2 effluent sump at Drax Power station, the largest single coal-fired plant in the UK. The concrete sump is used to collect the diluted acid and alkali re-generation liquors from the power station's water treatment plant. The internal surface area of the sump was lined with a spray- applied, glass reinforced Epoxy Vinyl Ester system, selected as it possesses long-term chemical resistance characteristics. The product is manufactured using the glass flake coating technology of the Fuji Resin Company, Japan. [] Lubricant conservation gets a boost Auto-Masters of Cheshire, UK, has installed a progressive cav- ity pump manufactured by Li- quid Movers to reduce the loss of cooling and lubricant liquid within a vacuum box. Auto-Masters has a regular order to manufacture alumi- nium coupling plates for attach- ment to rubber fuel bags installed on Tornado jets. To produce a number of couplings from a large single sheet of aluminium, the sheet is held down by vacuum whilst the cutter cuts the forms out. The coolant and lubrication liquid would normally go to waste. To reduce this wastage, Auto-Mas- ters has connected the progres- sive cavity pump to the cabinet holding the vacuum box which then works against the vacuum and extracts the excess liquid. The pump then returns the liquid to the main reservoir to be recycled through the process. Other types of pump were tried but the swarf works its way into the pump causing damage and loss of production whilst the pump was repaired or replaced. Swarf does not damage the rotor or stator of the Liquid Movers' pump ensur- PERISTALTIC PUMP ROTHO SYSTEM FLOW RATE FROM 28 LT/H TO 60.000 LT/H ON EIGHT MODELS • PRESSURE UP TO 8 BAR, SUCTION (BAR G) 0,93 SAFETY PROBE TO DETECT A WORN OUT TUBE • TRANSFER, FEEDIr, FILTRATION OF: fragile or sensitive flui compounds fluids, abl and corrosive fluids.
