FRIENDS of Paul Hanna gathered at charming tea room/book store, The Tea Shop, for the release of his book of poetry. Guests were able to re- ceive copies of the new pub- lication, titled Homegrown, and Paul’s newest CD with original and standard tracks. As visitors relaxed and enjoyed an array of baked goods, Paul, who was in tip- top form, entertained with a medley of the CD’s tunes. He quipped: “I’m 70 now, I don’t know what’s next.” All present would agree that the multi-talented septuagenar- ian is optimistically venturing down new pathways. The 48-page, soft-cover book, is a look at the person- al and societal changes that have taken place in recent years and how they’ve influ- enced Paul. He has detailed his feelings about inspiring and progressive people and events as well as those that were unsettling. Writing free-form, Paul carries readers through the highs and lows of his soul searching; the challenges and course corrections that renewed his values and moved him to find avenues to share them. Reflections on growing up in The Bahamas, tempered by his world travels have had a strong bearing on his reawakening and the expan- sion of his creative outlets. There were hints of his heightened social conscience with the release of his single Multi-talented Paul releases book of poetry! Troubles That We Make re- leased in September last year (page 38). Additionally, there are notes along with several pieces which evidence the writer’s thoughts were fer- menting for several years. This work is definitely an assessment at today’s society through the eyes of a mature, homegrown, son of the soil. In a way it looks at the conflict- ing attitudes and behaviours of Baby Boomers and the In- ternet Generation. Homegrown will definitely help these two segments of the population better understand each other’s perspectives. The book is available at the following locations: Nassau Stationer’s, The Tea Shop on Rosetta Street and Catherine & Carolyn’s on Cable Beach. JUNKANOO Summer Festival has returned to a familiar place—Arawak Cay—for two more Saturdays in July.

The highly anticipated Festival will be held July 23 and 30. And organisers promise that it is “bigger and better” than before.

Once again, Arawak Cay is the centre of the cultural extravaganza that highlights native food, authentically Bahamian craft items and down-home Bahamian music.

Anthony Stuart, general manger in the Events Strat-egy & Groups Department at the Ministry Of Tourism, said that a main feature of this event is the location and the fact that the festival

returns to Arawak Cay after being held last year on the downtown waterfront.

“Previously, Junkanoo Summer Festival was held along Woodes Rogers Walk in 2009 and then on Junkanoo Beach last year in 2010,” he said.

“However, Arawak Cay is so naturally tied to cul-tural events. And it has been associated with Junkanoo Summer Festival for so many years. So it makes a lot of sense to return to Arawak Cay.”

In addition to great food and music, Mr Stuart said locals and visitors attending this year’s Festival can ex-pect other fun-filled enter-tainment such as pineapple eating and crab catching

contests, a kid’s camp, and culinary demonstra-tions by talented chefs from throughout the country.

Junkanoo Summer Fes-tival 2011 will also feature a storytelling corner and farmer’s market, where freshly-grown Bahamian fruits and vegetables may be purchased.

Bahamian artists such as KB, Sweet Emily, Ira Storr and the Spank Band, Lassie Doe Boys, and many others will perform. And Junkanoo rush-outs will be held at 3pm and 8pm every Saturday.

Sponsors of this year’s Festival include Scotiabank, Baha-Mar, Caribbean Bot-tling Company, the Down-town Nassau Partnership,
