Break out your green and indulge in a shamrock shake or a pint of Guinness because St. Patrick’s Day is the time to celebrate. You don’t have to have an ounce of Irish blood to enjoy the holiday, and you also don’t have to be an expert on makeup to create a festive St. Patty’s makeup look. Even though green makeup can be daunting because the shade is bright and unusual, Kelsey Walmer, a make-up artist from Los Angeles, says pulling off the hue is easier than it seems. She’s created ten looks that span from an understated hint of green to all-out emerald drama, each a guaranteed shamrockin’ holiday look.

A Hint O’ GreenIf you’re hesitant to incorporate green into your makeup, Walmer suggests starting with simple green eyeliner. “This is subtle, it’s the girl-next-door look,” says Walmer. Use a green gel eyeliner and draw a thin line on just the top lid to start. If that’s all you’re comfortable with, Walmer says stop there and complete the look with pink or peach lipgloss. If you want the look to pop a bit more, wing the eyeliner by starting from the last lash and curving up toward your temple.

Subtle and ShimmeryAccording to Walmer, this simple, fun look takes two seconds and anyone can pull it off. “Just apply a light coat of green eyeshadow on your upper lid and add a black mascara,” says Walmer. It’s really that easy. If you have fair skin, choose an eyeshadow in a mint tone, for medium and olive skin tones, lime green or deep forest green flatter, and turquoise or emerald green complement dark skin tones. Look for an eyeshadow with a hint of shimmer for a pearly glow.

Low Maintenance Lips N’ LidsWith this look, you won’t need the luck of the Irish to make it to your festivities on time. “This look is for when you’re running straight from work to meet your friends at a party or the bar,” says Walmer. “It takes ten minutes and the berry lip really pops.” For eyes, trace a thin line of emerald eyeliner along upper lids, sticking close to the lashline, then dust gold or chocolate eyeshadow at the crease to contrast against the green. For lips, Walmer suggests using a liquid lipstick in strawberry or coral hue for a bold shot of color that won’t quit. “Just swipe it on and you don’t have to think about it the rest of the night,” says Walmer.

Four Leaf FunFeeling creative? Tap into your inner artist and try a small four-leaf clover for a cute addition to your regular makeup routine. “Draw out the shape of the shamrock with a green eyeliner pencil and then fill it in with a lighter green eye shadow,” Walmer says. “You can pull up a picture of a basic shamrock online and use it as a model.” Start with a sideways, rounded “M” for the top two leaves, then connect with a rounded and proportional “W” shape for the bottom two leaves. “You can also use a temporary tattoo if you're short on time,” says Walmer. Find temp tattoos at your local drug or party store in the holiday section.

50 Shades of GreenOmbre is everywhere this season and you can easily work it into your St. Patrick’s Day look with a few different shades of green eyeshadow. “This is a great way to create a dramatic eye that doesn't feel heavy,” says Walmer. To achieve the perfect ombre, Walmer says to start inward and work out. “Apply soft, pale green shadow on the inner third of your lid, a medium green on the middle and outer 3rd of your lid, and finally sweep a dark green into the crease and a little on the corner,” she says. Walmer added a “pop of light pink blush” to complete the look. Try a blush in a warm pale pink or bright strawberry shade.

Fairy DustAccording to Walmer, this glittery glam look is “for anyone that wants to be a St. Patty's fairy.” To make the glitter stay, Walmer says the secret is eyelash glue. “If you dot a small amount of eyelash glue around the sides of your eyes and quickly place the glitter of your choice on it, the product should set in a minute,” she explains. Walmer warns that if your you’re ready to celebrate and want to go full-on Leprechaun, Walmer advises adding a “red blush and ruby red lip to create the fantasy-look.”

Leprechaun LashesFunky and fun, fake eyelashes add a lot of oomph without a lot of time, according to Walmer. “If you don't have the time to do a lot of make-up application, eyelashes are a great substitute,” she says. Application only takes a minute and is easier than people think. “Just put a thin coat of eyelash glue on the upper lash line and hold the eyelashes for 30-60 seconds,” Walmer explains. “Then top of the look with a great matte red lip and you're ready to go.” Falsies come in all shapes and shades, so find a pair that suits your personality and complements your outfit.

Irish KissLooking for something unique? Walmer says a green lip is bold and festive. She suggests using a nude eyeshadow and black eyeliner to avoid makeup overload since the lip is so striking. Just be sure to buy your green lipstick or gloss a week before the big day. “Make sure to plan ahead if you need to order a special product for the occasion,” says Walmer, who found this green lipgloss online.

The Perfect PairWalmer says the key to a great going out look for this boisterous holiday is pairing a dramatic eye with an interesting lip shape. Starting with your eyes, choose eyeshadow in dark pine green, graphite and charcoal and create a smokey look by layering each, in any order, from upper lashline all the way to your browbone. “Line your eyes with black liner to strengthen this look even more,” says Walmer. To create the lip shape, Walmer says to start with all-over concealer for a blank canvas. “Then you can create the desired shape,” she says. “I made a doll-like pout by using black eyeliner as an outline.” After you’ve created an outline, fill in with green gel eyeliner. You can add even more pizzazz by using a small, pea-size amount of eyeliner glue and patting lose glitter on top. “Let the look set and you're ready to go,” says Walmer. “But I recommend you use a straw with your drinks, just to avoid needing to reapply.”

Green QueenWalmer calls this the ultimate green queen look. “This is dramatic,” says Walmer. “This is for when you feel daring and want to work the room or really step out onto the town.” To take your thrown as queen of the Emerald Isle, apply green eyeshadow on upper lids. Then, using a thin makeup brush, trace a line of the same shadow on your lower lashline. After, apply the falsies using eyelash glue and finish with a green lipstick. Walmer says you can also use a thick cream eyeshadow and apply with a lip brush. Now you’re truly ready for St. Patty's Day.
