He was taught at a young age by his father. He was a little anti -social and many historians believe he was difficult to get along with.

Beethoven played not only the piano but composed music and played the viola as well. He played the viola in many orchestras which allowed him to meet influential people of which helped shape his style.

Constantly asking people to repeat themselves would get tiresome and frustrating. It is sometimes hard to put ourselves in his shoes with all the technology we live with we could easily just go down the road and get some hearing aids. In Beethoven’s case he probably had to constantly ask people to speak up and repeat themselves. Also your hearing is going and you probably are close to a light yell even for you to hear yourself. Thus causing people to more than likely look at him differently and cause him to want to keep his distance from them at all times.

He wrote sixteen string quartets and thirty two piano sonatas. He was even writing and publishing works at the age of twelve. Which was called 9 Variations in C Minor for piano.

He was called back to his home town to the funeral which must have been an extremely hard thing to go through being so young. His father was most of the time under the influence of alcohol and so he took on the responsibility to care for his two younger brothers.

Beethoven continued to progress in the musical realm. He returned to Vienna about 5 years after the death of his mother. There he took lessons from Haydyn, Albrechtberger, and Salieri. He was quick to get after people and had a very impulsive behavior. His extraordinary talent allowed him to be forgiven of this behavior by those he grew angry with. This was another reason he did not get along very well with most people. He was so quick to get angry with them that he preferred to keep his distance from most people. Again the fact that he was losing his hearing by this time he kept a larger distance from himself and others. He had even written a letter back to his friends in his home town describing the unfair realities of life that he did not think were fair. Here he was a great musician and he was going deaf. Music is felt, examined, and lived through hearing. The one thing he was beginning to lose without being able to do anything about it.

At the age of 38 he started having desires to leave Vienna but a good friend Countess Anna Marie Erdody rounded up some rich followers who paid Beethoven enough that he could live without financial worries. The only way he was to receive this grant was if he were not to leave Vienna. He accepted and became the world’s first independent composer. This in turn gave him the freedom to do what he pleased when he pleased it. This allowed him to focus on the things he desired and thought were the most important. He had a great mind and this allowed him the ability to unleash its greatness unto the world, which would last for numerous decades. His music is celebrated around the world and is still recomposed and played by a number of musicians.

One of his brothers passed away leaving behind his wife and a young boy. The brother wanted Ludwig to be there to take care of him with the help of his wife. Beethoven took this duty seriously but found it difficult to communicate with the young boy due to his hearing loss. Beethoven continued to work on his music and compose other great works at this time.

He had other health aliments not just his hearing that caused him great pain. He began feeling a large amount of pain in his abdominal around the age of 20 which would last the course of his life. These things caused him great heartache and also allowed him to dive deeper into his work to forget the pain they caused him.

Beethoven Rests Here

Later in his life he worked hard to make his works known among people during his time. He always worked to make the best pieces that he could possibly come up with and make them enjoyable and carry meaning and every note. Many of his later works work successful but did not bring in a lot of money for him. He still had money saved up but he was keeping it for his nephew in which his brother left to his care after his brother’s death. He was constantly working on his works even unto the end. He passed away on March 26, 1827 at the age of 56. He had caught a cold which caused other things he was dealing with health wise to complicate his medical condition. This in turn lead to him not being able to fight off all the ailments and he finally passed away while surrounded by his closest friends. They estimate that anywhere from 10,000 to 30,000 people attended the funeral which was held in a church. The coffin bearers were fellow musicians who admired the man who brought to this world works of music that will probably never be forgotten as long as the earth shall fly through the vastness that is space.

The sixth symphony was written almost while Beethoven was still finishing up the fifth symphony. Although it was written around the exact same time the theme differs from the fifth. Some consider it to be the love the composer had for nature as he wrote the music. In numerous letters he wrote at the same time as writing this symphony he talks about the joys and happiness he feels being able to walk through the things in nature and be among them.

Part 4 is my favorite. The picture describes it perfectly!

Even the name gives evidence of these things and the titles to each part as well. The Pastoral Symphony as it is referred to at times also means the recollection of the life in the countryside. Part two of the symphony is called the scene at the creek. Part three Joyful reunion of peasants, part four the tempest. Even in these first four parts we can see by the titles alone that it was nature that he was focused on while writing the symphony. The last part which is probably my favorite is called feelings of joy and gratitude after the storm. I love the smell right after it rains and the way the world seems to be washed clean after the storm comes by. I really do have feelings of joy and gratitude after the storm myself and listening to the music you can feel it through music the joy that storms bring everyone around the world.

It makes sense that he made a symphony to give thanks to nature. For if someone is to go out and experience nature they are going to hear the symphony that nature has to offer. Although it is never the exact same you can always expect to hear a wonderful chorus of music. He probably found great inspiration while listening to birds, the wind go through the trees and rivers and streams making their way down the countryside. Even the storms as they pass by the thunder working with the small droplets piercing the ground must make a wonderful melody as they strike different things on the ground. Even the smells that nature has to offer could have influenced the music that he wrote.

He finished the work in 1808 and was first performed at the end of that year on Dec 22, 1808. There is a happy upbeat nature about this symphony and we will only be taking look at the first 14 min and 13 seconds of the symphony. As performed by ‘The Only Beethoven Album You Will Ever Need’ on Rhapsody. Although Beethoven spend most of his time in the city he loved to go walking in the countryside for inspiration. Probably wanting to hear the noises of nature that were not abundant in the city life he was used to living. This particular symphony almost paints a picture for the listener as Beethoven takes you from scene to scene in the countryside which the music represents very well.

0:00 The Rhythm starts off somewhat upbeat and slows to be as if you are taking a slow walk down a path. It starts off very soft and slowly gets louder. The dynamic is quiet and then picks up.

0:23 Here the Rhythm has a pattern close to what a marching army of animals might have. Then it slowly gets softer and softer. As it fades so does the melody and harmony which goes along with it.

0:35 The music starts to get louder and faster as the dynamics change several times during this time. The Rhythm picks up starts to go faster.

0:45 The dynamic is loud while moving both up and down dramatically fast. The rhythm is upbeat and keeps pace with the dynamics of this part of the symphony.

1:07 The rhythm slows and stays slow with small upbeat moments in between. It has an overall slowness feel to it. The dynamics slow as well causing the feeling to get more serious. Very quiet and slow things start moving at the end of this section of the symphony.

1:38 It starts of soft and increases during this time period and then gets very loud before the next portion of the symphony. The rhythm picks up slowly and stays constant until the next course.

2:04 The rhythm is gone while the music stops for a brief second and then picks up with the beat as before. It eases up the volume and then gets quiet again.

2:24 The rhythm picks up and is very upbeat for a while but slows still remaining upbeat during this portion of the symphony. The dynamics increases very fast and gets louder while the texture and timbre are distinguished through listening closely.

2:45 There is little to no music at this point and the rhythm is hard to feel. Although it is pretty quiet at this portion you can hear the timbre as clear as day light.

2:56 The dynamics remain soft during this portion of the symphony. There is a light tempo and the rhythm starts to pick up as the symphony continues. With great ease you can pick apart the different instruments that are being used at this point and call them out.

3:24 The rhythm is light and bounces from one note to another with ease. Here once again the dynamic is soft but it has quick tones as the song progresses. Leaving the listener still interested and wanting more.

3:46 The volume increases greatly. Then drops once again as before. Upbeat high rhythm dominates this portion of the symphony. Giving you a happy joyful feeling.

4:06 The light violin is felt but is very quiet. The rhythm slows with constant pulsing.4:35 It continually gets louder and louder allowing the full force of the texture to shine

through. Rhythm lengthens starts to sound like leaves falling to the ground as the music grows it’s dynamics. The timbre is thick in great quality.

5:02 Up and down and then slowly moves the rhythm in this portion of the symphony. Just like the rhythm the dynamics also go up and down in volume. The timbre doesn’t follow with those other two things but seem to be lacking in a small way.

5:21 This portion is loud with fast movements and gets quieter as it slows to a more quiet tone. The ability to distinguish instruments again here is high. This part has a high tempo and the rhythm is faster and exciting.

5:43 The rhythm slows to a crawl and is very soft. While it is soft and quiet the quality is high as each instrument in play at this point is shining through with full color.

6:03 There is a fast portion in this part that makes it sound as if birds are chirping as he is taking his walk in the countryside. The dynamic remains the same while the interworking of texture. The timbre is colorful and nice.

6:34 The rhythm picks up then slows with dramatic pounces. The music grows like a tree to a summit of a mountain where it then falls. Not in a disgraceful manner but a light way like a leaf would from a tall tree.

Favorite part

6:56 The music fades and the rhythm remains constant for a while. It is quiet but slowly increases as the texture is difficult to separate everything due to the few instruments that are playing at this time.

7:15 At this point of the symphony it has a very nice rhythm to it and makes one almost want to start to move to the beat. The dynamics remain constant but increases drastically and fades just as quickly as it increased. The feeling that you may have spotted a terrifying animal but realize that your mind is playing tricks on you is how this sounds.

7:43 Up and down, faster then slower goes the rhythm at this part. The music fades and then increases over time as would the amount of soot in the air near a forest fire.

8:10 The rhythm moves to a slower more drawn out rhythm for a small portion of this part. The instruments seems to be playing a game of tennis tossing the ball back on forth as one instrument sends a signal to the other to start. Then back to the first instruments to start again. The dynamic stays similar to the previous part.

8:30 Upbeat again having a unique beat that most popular music is made up of today. The loudness follows a patter as if someone were knocking on a door. Then realizing no one is coming to that door walks off just like the dynamics did in this part. The timbre is high and the texture is not as clear for me during this portion.

8:55 The rhythm slows down but has a beat that is drawn out. The dynamics are low but increase just a bit but not enough to cause concern. It is played well and gives a calming feeling that one should stay and enjoy the scenery of where they are at in that particular moment.

9:17 Fast beats while remaining quiet. The music is almost being whispered to the listener.

9:28 Things ignite and the rhythm picks up as well as the dynamics. The melody causes an overpowering sensation to cascade over you as if you were standing in a rain storm. Everything is being played with the violin in the back ground doing what seems like a fluttering repetition like a small animal is trying to take flight.

9:52 Fast rhythm with quick beats that get shorter but closer together. Fairly quiet during this portion with very few instruments playing but more start to get into the action in the end.

The End

10:24 The dynamic is quiet but gradually pick up tempo and loudness which everything fades right at the last second. Drawn out slow beats which then pick up towards the end.

10:53 Slow then quick to slow this portion has a lot of movement that is felt with the rhythm. A moderate loudness which fades and grows again. Everything joins together for a fun beat and a great timbre. The ability to distinguish the different instruments is high at this point.

11:25 It starts fairly loud and gets quieter and quieter. The rhythm and the beats slow to close to nothing.

11:50 Deep tones take over shortly followed by more moderate ones. Rhythm starts to dance but then slows as quickly as it started.

12:19 Rhythm was up to high levels during this part. The dynamics were very loud and increased just a little bit.

12:42 A dramatic show of dynamics comes into play with the rhythm following. After peaking at the loudest point the dynamic gets softer and quieter. The timbre is clear and radiant.

13:00 A constant under rhythm remains which is quick while louder more aggressive slower rhythms come over top from time to time.

13:28 Slow light rhythm takes over the melody. The timbre of the notes is high. The dynamic is somewhat quiet but is made up by the texture.

13:46 A wonderful rhythm and dynamic take over to feel ones soul in a fire works like ending. The texture is rich as one could almost pull it out of the air and touch it. The timbre is pure and perfect. There is a flavor left in your senses that leave you wanting more.
