to obtain the needed building permitv Sign contractor should be listed as general contractor (gc) unless a gc is
specifically listedv Monumental signs will not go through this process. They should be
submitted through the regular plan review process and may require a general contractor, depending on cost of construction

When a Building permit is required and required information:If a building permit is required, the following information is required to be submitted:
Ø Plans with details of construction containing information outlined in H105 of Appendix H. This includes dimensions, materials used, addressed loads and stresses, anchorage and fastening details.
Ø Plans should address specific requirements for projecting signs found in section H112 and Table 4-‐B.
Ø Elevations of building exterior are necessary to identify the location of the sign and the mounting height in relation to the existing building.
6
Important Changes:Ø A single electrical and or building permit will be issued for each
project address, reducing the need for 1 to 1 permits and reducing the cost of permitting in the case of more than 2 signs.
Ø The sign permit will not be issued until the electrical and or building permits are approved and issued, and vice versa.
Ø A building permit is required for projecting signs greater than 6 feet, along with attachment drawings.
Ø If a different contractor will be named on the building permit, the sign contractor needs to note this when applying for the sign permit.
7
Request to AutomateØ Currently, sign permits are a manual process, whereas
many of our other permitting streams have been automated.
Ø Requests have been made to automate this process so that:v Sign contractors can submit online sign applicationsv Once a permit is issued, a permit document is created
with remarks instructing the contractor to ‘Request Inspection’.q Inspection requests can be made for zoning (City of
Charlotte, Town of Huntersville, Town of Mint Hill, and the County Land Development inspector who handles the remaining towns, as well as for the building and electrical permits.
8
Automated Sign Permit Vision:Ø Create an online permit application process: A customer
dashboard to be provided to the contractors to be able to log in and apply for the permit. The online application to contain all the fields in the paper application. Once the application is complete, the system would provide a permit number and a submittal number. This does not mean issuance of the permit.
Ø Upload drawings pertaining to Sign Permit: Contractors would be able to upload supporting documents and plan drawings on the dashboard. The plan drawings once uploaded and submitted, the system would stop them from making any further changes or upload an updated drawing till the reviewer requests them. User would be able to up load other supporting documents at any time of the project
