he resurrection of Jesus on the third day after

his dreadful crucifixion and entombment is central to the Christian faith. We quote Paul when we say if Jesus had not died, as some religionists claim, we are to be pitied (1 Corinthians 15:19-20). Yet the resurrection from the dead is not easily understood or disproved. Let alone a resurrection that took place more than 2,000 years ago. Other detractors of our faith also claim that the resurrection or disappearance of important people in various cultures and religions of the world has been proffered to suggest that there is nothing unique about Jesus rising from the dead.

We need not dispute nor try to disprove the resurrection or disappearance if, any, of the great culture-heroes, religious leaders, saints or teachers. However, there is nothing to prevent us from coming to terms with our own understanding of the resurrection of Jesus.

Firstly, the Bible has many examples of people rising from the dead. The Prophet Elijah raises a boy from the dead (I Kings 17:17-24). Elisha raises the son of the Shunammite woman (2 Kings 4:8-16). It is always understood that it is the power of God that raises the dead but in 2 Kings 13:21 there is an interesting story of a dead Moabite when on being touched by Elisha’s dead bones, sprung to life. In the New Testament, we find that Jesus himself raised the dead boy in Nain (Luke 7:11-17); the ruler’s daughter at Galilee (Mark 5:35-42); and Lazarus in Bethany (John 11:1-14). In fact, Jesus expected his Apostles to do likewise (Matthew 10:8). The Apostle Peter also raised Tabitha in Joppa (Acts 9:36-42); and Paul too raised Eutychus in Troas (Acts 20:7-12).

Completely and surprisingly, the Bible goes to great extents to show that the resurrection of Jesus was not a grand farewell or exit for a greatly loved “spiritual person.” Neither was it a myth created as a ploy to prevent the disciples and followers of Jesus to hunt for his

requests and wishes according to our own propitiation.

b. The Jesus who was born a human person is no more. He died on the cross for a cosmic purpose and now he is with God the Father. The image of Jesus is not on earth but is in the Spirit of the risen Christ.

c. We serve a God whose Holy Spirit is our Comforter and Helper. He is not far away or aloof nor angry and in need of appeasement but is a loving God who avails himself to his children. God is only a prayer-call away… reachable by all the broken-hearted and repentant.

These three principles can be discerned as the apostolic polemics which are enough to confront any contrary religious claims put forward. Christianity is different in this sense. We take comfort in this because the gospel writers were fighting a ghost themselves, that is, the claims of those who said Jesus did not rise from the dead. “This Jesus God raised up, and of that we all are witnesses” (Acts 2:32).They are still saying that. But putting all the gospels and the Book of Acts together we get a picture that is far more sophisticated and far exceeding than their own visions. It rings all the more true today than it would have in their time. This is surely the work of God.

So my friends, take comfort that the death of Jesus was to enable him to go and prepare a place for us in our Father’s mansion. Take comfort, my dear friends, death has no sting for us because our Saviour Jesus Christ rose from the dead.

“Fear not, I am the first and the last, and the living one; I became dead, and behold I am alive for evermore (Amen) and I have the keys of Hades and Death.” (Revelation 1:17-18).

Together with my family, I wish all members and well-wishers of the ELCM “A JOYFUL AND MEANINGFUL EASTER CELEBRATION!”

grave, and inevitably suffer the problem of turning it into a shrine. What the disciples of Jesus actually did has no parallel in any religion or culture. The grave of Jesus is identified. The Scriptures give great details as to who, how and why Jesus, and no other, was buried there, and the fact that the tomb was closed by a heavy stone. Then on Passover morning the blessed

women confirmed that Jesus was raised. Then the unbelieving disciples, who were at the tomb, themselves thought his body had been stolen. The fact was that they found it empty (Mark 16:9; John 20:14).Then Jesus himself goes to great lengths for forty days (Acts 1:3) to establish the truth of his resurrection with the disciples. To doubting Thomas, he showed his wounds to be touched by him (John 20:24–29). To the men in Emmaus, he ate a meal of fish and spoke to them (Luke 24:13-32). He came to Peter in Galilee and told him where to cast his net (John 21:1-23).

Usually, scholars point out that all the post-resurrection details point themselves to an important climax in the ministry of Jesus – the Great Commission. This is true but there is another important point. These many details of the resurrection of a dead hero are never found in the annals of any other religion except Christianity! It is different with us because of the following reasons:

a. We serve a risen Christ. Our Lord is a living God. We do not worship at a shrine or sacred burial place of a person whose ghost looks after us, granting us out prayer

JESUS ROSEFROM THE DEAD

he resurrection of Jesus on the third day after

his dreadful crucifi xion and entombment is central to the Christian faith.

In the New Testament, we fi nd that Jesus himself raised the dead boy in Nain (Luke 7:11-17); the ruler’s daughter at Galilee (Mark 5:35-42); and Lazarus in Bethany (John 11:1-14). In fact, Jesus expected his Apostles to do likewise (Matthew 10:8). The Apostle Peter also raised Tabitha in Joppa (Acts 9:36-42); and Paul too raised Eutychus in Troas (Acts 20:7-12).

Completely and surprisingly, the Bible goes to great extents to show that the resurrection of Jesus was not a grand farewell or exit for a greatly loved “spiritual person.” Neither was it a myth created as a ploy to prevent the disciples and followers of Jesus to hunt for his grave, and inevitably suffer the problem of turning it into a shrine. What the disciples of Jesus actually did has no parallel in any religion or culture.

Strengthening & Expanding ELCM 2009-2020 | ngyg;gLj;Jjy; & tpupTg;gLj;Jjy; 2009-2020

Easter Sunday is the day Christians celebrate the resurrection of Jesus. The resurrection is the very center of Christianity as without it we have nothing.

And the Lutheran Herald, in conjunction with this most significant of days, wishes to share with all our respected readers the most explosive words ever uttered. Whatever else man is searching for today, the burning desire in everyone’s hearts is for HOPE. Some want hope that their past can be forgiven; others need hope to face victoriously their future; still others say, “Give me something for the here-and-now; I need hope for living in the present.”

The only way of life that offers this kind of hope is the Christian faith. The key reason that Christianity offers this kind of hope is that Jesus Christ who died in Jerusalem about the year A.D. 29 for the sins of the world has been raised from the dead and IS ALIVE TODAY!

Sitting on the stone that he rolled from the door of the empty tomb of Jesus, an angel of God declared THE MOST EXPLOSIVE WORDS EVER UTTERED:

“He is not here; for he is risen, as he said. Come, see the place where the Lord lay” (Matthew 28:6).

In this editorial, the Herald also wishes to share with you the following 2 resurrection truths:

1. The Reality of the Resurrection The greatest miracle of all history came with the resurrection of the Lord Jesus Christ.

Can this miracle be believed? Most definitely it can!

The empty tomb is one of the strongest proofs of Christ’s resurrection. All 4 Gospels report that Jesus died and that his dead body was placed in the tomb on Friday; all 4 subsequently report the tomb was empty 3 days later!

When the Gospel records are read carefully, at least 10 appearances of the risen Christ

to different persons and groups can be determined. He was seen personally and visibly by numerous eye-witnesses. What an array of evidence!

But the greatest evidence of the reality of the resurrection is that he lives within my life now giving me hope that my past has been forgiven, giving me hope to face the future and giving me hope and strength today for living life to its fullest!

2. The Relevance of the Resurrection We know there is to be a resurrection for us in the future because we know there was a

resurrection of him in the past. He said, “Because I live, you will live also” (John 14:19). Our Lord’s resurrection ensures our victory over death.

The Lutheran Herald Editorial Committee takes this opportunity to wish all our readers A BLESSED EASTER 2015!
