Dear Parents / Carers
Firstly, I would like to say what a delight it was to meet so many of you at our Year 11 Post-16 Evening. I always enjoy talking with students and parents about future options. I would like to thank the Post-16 providers and especially the universities who visited, who were able to guide students on how their Post-16 options would affect what they could do in Higher Education. Please be aware that the deadlines for Post-16 applications can be quite early. As you can see inside the newsletter there are a large number of open days and evenings this month.

SIR WINSTON CHURCHILL
Winston Churchill was born on November 30th 1874, to a well known politician and an American socialite, in Oxfordshire, of rich, aristocratic ancestry. Although achieving poor
grades at school, his early fascination with militarism saw him join the Royal Cavalry in 1895. Churchill travelled widely, including trips to Cuba, Afghanistan, Egypt and South Africa, as a soldier and gaining fame as a part time journalist, before coming home, where he became
Prime Minister, twice, from 1940 to 1945 and again from 1951 to 1955.
During the Second World War, Churchill oversaw British involvement in the allied war effort, resulting in victory in 1945. His wartime leadership has been widely praised, though later,
some decisions proved controversial.
Widely considered one of the 20th Century's most significant figures, Churchill remains popular in the UK and Western world, where he is seen as a victorious wartime leader who
played an important role in defending liberal democracy from the spread of fascism. Due to declining health, he resigned as Prime Minister after his second run, and died 10
years later, on January 24th 1965. He was given a state funeral.
Due to his father’s early death at 45, Churchill wanted do as much with his life as he could.
Churchill and President Franklin Roosevelt had a close friendship. He gave a famous speech referencing Joseph Stalin’s plan to spread communism
across Europe as an ‘iron curtain’ and this term became part of political vocabulary. The author of 40 books, he won the Nobel Prize for literature due to his entire body of
work, particularly for the six-volume set of The Second World War.

Ghostly story telling
We had a fantastic lunchtime on Wednesday in the Learning Hub sharing spooky stories around the virtual campfire. We had classic tales of horror and mystery. Students also gasped in fear over the tale of the broken Wi-Fi and Mr Bray’s overdue homework. Well done to everyone who took part and to everyone for being an attentive and engaged audience. Congratulations to Lauren Allen who it was unanimously agreed told the best story and she won a brand new book for her prize.

Sports Highlights
Synchronised SwimmingThis week, Mr Howgate found out that we have our very own national level synchronised swimmer. Knowing this, he couldn’t resist having a breath holding competition. Of course, Mr Howgate was beaten!
Year 7 Girls’ FootballAfter weeks of training, our footballers took to the field to play in two competitions this week. The first was an area competition which we won and progressed to the South Leicestershire Cup, where the girls ended up coming second. Next week, they will play in Team Leicestershire’s ompetition and we wish them the best of luck!
NetballLast half term, our Year 10 netball girls won the area competition and progressed to the County Finals. On Thursday, they took on Beauchamp College in the last 16 beating them 42-11. We now await to see who we will play in the County Quarter Finals in the next few weeks!
Wreath NightDon’t forget to purchase your tickets from Main Reception for our Wreath Night on Wednesday 5th December, 7.00-9.00pm. All funds raised go to the Sri Lanka Tour and Performing Arts Department.
