Dr. Dominick Tinari began help-ing people with their pain at a veryyoung age. While other 9-year-old kidswere thinking of ways to be a pain inthe neck, Dr. Tinari was figuring outhow to help reduce his father’s backpain. “My dad was a firefighter in NewYork City for many years. He wouldcome home from a long day on thejob and would be in a lot of pain. Iwould find the spots on his back thathad the most tension and massagethose to help him out. Even at ayoung age, I understood how massagecould work out kinks and pains. At 14years old I was diagnosed with scolio-sis and began seeing a chiropractor fortreatment. When I entered college, Iknew that I wanted to help people bybecoming a chiropractor.”

And Dr. Tinari is doing just thatat Tinari Chiropractic located at

19417 Shumard Oak Drive. Dr. Do-minick Tinari and his friendly staffat Tinari Chiropractic are dedicated tohelping you feel your best and be yourbest. “I was a student of Dr. LarryWebster, the founder of the Interna-tional Chiropractic Pediatric Associa-tion. He developed a specificchiropractic treatment that establishesbalance and reduces stress in a preg-nant woman’s body. This technique, known as the Webster Technique, hasbeen clinically shown to allow for opti-mal fetal positioning. I was honored tobe one of the last students to learnfirsthand from Dr. Webster.”

Many women seek chiropracticcare to relieve neck or back pain thatresults from weight gain and body

changes during preg-nancy. But even ifyou’re not in pain, youcan benefit from visit-ing a chiropractor.Chiropractic care dur-ing pregnancy can helpreduce the risk of hav-ing a breech baby.Regular chiropracticcare can also provide amore comfortablepregnancy and deliveryfor both mother andbaby.

Children, espe-cially those who playsports can benefit from regular chiro-practic care. According to the NationalCenter for Sports Safety, “Overuse in-jury, which occurs over time from re-peated motion, is responsible fornearly half of all sports injuries to mid-dle-and high-school students.” Chil-dren who play impact sports are also atrisk for injuries that could cause mis-alignments in their spine or neck.

Chiropractic care benefits childrenby correcting the spinal alignment toimprove their overall health. When thespine becomes misaligned during birthor from a blow or fall, muscle tissue

and nerves may also be affected. Spinaladjustment frees joints, restores mo-tion and relieves nerve pressure, whichcould be causing other ailments.

Dr. Tinari is enthusiastic aboutsports and helping athletes achievepeak performance. After hearing aboutKinesio Tape, he met with the inven-tor and has had extensive training onhow to use this valuable tool to bestbenefit his patients. Dr. Douglas’ practice outgrew itsprevious location at 8734 N. MobleyRd. in the Fox’s Corner shopping cen-ter in Odessa and the move to a newoffice on October 15th was the perfecttime to rename his practice – OdessaFamily Dentistry is now Douglas Den-tistry, located at 5306 Van Dyke Roadin Lutz. Dentistry is family-orientedand the roomier office is comfortablefor all aged patients and easily accom-modates your family. “We are in alarger facility to better accommodateour patients,” says Dr. Douglas. “Wehave incorporated several pieces ofnew dental equipment including mas-

saging dental chairs. We are confidentthat these timely, positive changes willresult in a better patient experienceand although we are excited about thechanges, there are some things thatwill NOT change. Our patients willstill receive the personalized care andattention from our entire staff thatthey have come to expect.”

With the larger facility comessome awesome perks, like those up-graded chairs that Dr. Douglas had in-stalled in all of the treatment rooms.Patients feel pampered after a visit toDouglas Dentistry, where Dr. Douglasand his staff work hard to create posi-tive dental experiences for every pa-tient. Sedation is available for thosewho need it, but most patients findthat they are very comfortable due tothe combination of Dr. Douglas’ easymanner and the comfort-inducingcozy neck pillows and blankets that areprovided in addition to the luxuriousmassaging dental chairs.

Dr. Douglas is one of those peo-ple who knew from an early age whathe wanted to be when he grew up.Every summer he would shadow his

uncle, who was anendodontist. It wasthrough workingalongside his uncleand seeing first-hand how dentistrycould truly im-prove people’s livesthat he knew den-tistry was what hewanted to do.

After attend-ing USF and re-ceiving his collegedegree, he receiveda Master’s degreein Health and Ad-ministration. Fromthere, he was ac-cepted at the illus-trious University of North Carolina atChapel Hill where he attended theirSchool of Dentistry. smiles through cosmetic dentistry. “Ireally love working with my hands,”says Dr. Douglas, “and working withcosmetic dentistry allows me to reallymake a difference in people’s lives.”

Douglas Dentistry utilizes thebest of dental technology in order toprovide an elevated level of care to itspatients.

“Digital x-rays are ideal becausethey give off a much lower dose of ra-diation to the patient; in fact, they areup to 90 percent lower. It is also a lotmore diagnostic because, as a dentist, you can manipulate and enhance theimage to better diagnose your patients. Also, digital x-rays are ‘green’ and bet-ter for the environment, because nochemicals are required to create theimage,” says Dr. Douglas.

Another diagnostic tool that Dr.Douglas finds very useful is the intra-oral camera that allows him to actuallyshow a patient an up-close, high defi-nition photo of the inside of theirmouth and individual teeth. Not onlyis the intra-oral camera an excellent di-agnostic tool, it is also a great way forhim to educate his patients about theiroral care and the dental proceduresthat are planned for their care.

You Can Change Your Smile!

Through dental reconstruction,Dr. Douglas can give you a glamoroussmile! No matter what a person’s ge-netics determined, the miracle of cos-metic dentistry is changing the waypeople see themselves and helpingmany to feel better about themselves.

If you have a chipped tooth orever avoid smiling because you are notproud of your teeth, you should con-sider cosmetic dentistry. Dr. Douglascan easily repair chipped teeth, hideunsightly gaps, and create a beautifulsmile that has straight, brilliant whiteteeth without the need for braces orapparatuses. This kind of procedurecan be done in as little as two visits toDouglas Dentistry.

Advances in dental techniquesand the use of advanced materials havetaken cosmetic dentistry far beyondwhat dentists could do ten years ago.His skill, artistic eye and knowledge ofthe latest cosmetic dentistry tech-niques, such as dental implants, allowDr. Douglas to completely transformhis patients’ smiles if they need it, andeven if they just want a prettier smile.

Dental implants are beautiful andfunctional, offering an excellent ad-vanced alternative to bridges and den-tures. Dr. Douglas is skilled at these

longstanding procedures too, butmost patients prefer the newer proce-dures. Dental implants can bring aquality of life back into people’s livesthat many of them thought theywould never have again.

If you are looking for a familydentist who treats patients of all ages, who takes his time, and who has a pas-sion for what he does – whether youneed a full mouth restoration or sim-ply need a cleaning or maybe profes-sional teeth whitening, visit Dr.Douglas at Douglas Dentistry, whichaccepts most dental PPOs and offers

patients low and no-interest paymentplans so that everyone can have abeautiful smile.

Dentists Around the WorldLearn to Create Miracles Here

By Kim Thomas

It is a rare opportunity when oneis privileged to meet a surgeon who isa world-renowned expert in their field,so I felt very fortunate when I recentlymet with Michael A. Pikos, DDS, totour the newly remodeled facility thatwill house the Pikos Implant Instituteopening this November. General den-tists and oral surgeons from aroundthe world will come to Trinity, Floridato learn advanced bone and soft tissuegrafting surgical techniques from Dr.Pikos, who has been teaching since1990 and who founded the Pikos Im-plant Institute in 1991. Through thePikos Implant Institute, Dr. Pikos hasshared his knowledge and fine-tunedsurgical techniques with more than2,700 dental clinicians in all 50 statesin the U.S. and in 32 countries world-wide.

Basically, at Pikos Implant Insti-tute, doctors learn to build a platformfor dental implants, which is actuallymiraculous for patients who have lostbone and tissue due to accidents or tu-mors. Through science and techno-logical advances Dr. Pikos and hiscolleagues are helping patients to facethemselves in the mirror again and toget back to living a quality life. Dr.

Pikos himself has performed morethan 15,000 implants and severalthousand bone and soft tissue graftingprocedures.

Dr. Pikos explains, “What I teachis a sub-specialty of implantology.Bone grafting has been my forte overthe years and this is one of only threefacilities in our country that featureswhat I’m teaching. Grafting allows usto reconstruct areas of the mouth thatare lost for a number of reasons. Weare able to rebuild lost bone and gumtissue using a combination of not onlythe patient’s own tissue, but also withtissue engineering technology.”

Dr. Pikos has every reason to feelvery proud of his accomplishments.“This is a very unique Institute withinthe realm of implantology. My Insti-tute is the second longest runningprogram in the country and I’m veryhonored to be able to share my ex-pertise with my colleagues.”

Many in the Tampa Bay areaknow of Dr. Pikos and his practice,Coastal Jaw Surgery for Implant &Oral Reconstruction with offices inPalm Harbor, Spring Hill and Trinity.Known as the “doctors’ doctors,” Dr.Pikos and his associates at Coastal JawSurgery are the trusted physicians thathundreds of dental and medical pro-fessionals refer their patients to, as wellas their friends and family members.Coastal Jaw Surgery was founded in1983 and July 2012 marked its 29thAnniversary.

Building a Legacy – Pikos ImplantInstitute

The Pikos Implant Institute hasgrown throughout the years and hasalways brought dental surgeons to ourarea. However, the new facility (previ-ously the Wachovia Bank building onMitchell Blvd.) will be an even biggerboon to our local economy with year-round classes bringing in dentists whowill be using area restaurants and stay-ing at our local hotels and golf resorts. In addition to the dental clinicianswho are attending the Institute, thearea will also benefit from exhibitors(26 representing 13 different compa-nies) who will need lodging and food.

Dr. Pikos first started teaching inthe upstairs area of his Palm Harboroffice which he says could hold 20people in tight quarters, but as theprogram grew he had to find a largerplace to accommodate his lectures andmoved across the street to the Sun-

coast Hospicebuilding on TampaRoad where theInstitute operatedfor 10 years and hewas able to have30 clinicians in at-tendance. The newfacility will hold 50comfortably butDr. Pikos limits hiscourses to 32 at-tendees. “Graduatestudents in resi-dence from Uni-versity of FloridaCollege of Den-tistry, Nova and

The Ohio State University all comehere for training,” says Dr. Pikos.“Nova residents shadow me for twoweeks at a time.”

“This facility was physically builtnot just as a teaching institute for im-plantology, but also for our CoastalJaw Surgery practice and our dentalcolleagues in four counties – Citrus,Hernando, Pasco and Pinellas – andtheir staffs to use for a teaching facil-ity,” says Dr. Pikos. The Pikos ImplantInstitute will also serve as the newmeeting location for Pinnacle StudyClub of Tampa Bay, an inter-discipli-nary study club that is in its 23rd yearwith 54 members who meet eighttimes a year. The group has beenmeeting at East Lake Woodlands GolfClub in years previous.

Beyond State-of-the-ArtThe Pikos Implant Institute really

makes the term “state-of-the-art”seem inadequate. Not only is thedécor throughout the building elegantand immaculate; every detail has beenconsidered to ensure that dentists havean extraordinary learning experience. The large Exhibit Hall is comfortableand accommodating and the Teaching

Auditorium is equipped with the bestsound system available, acousticalceiling, roomy individual seating anda huge projection screen (18’ x 6’)and hardwiring allows the surgeons towatch procedures as they are beingperformed at Coastal Jaw Surgery.

And that is just Phase I; Phase IIis currently underway and will pro-vide the Institute with its own opera-tory with a large plate-glass windowthrough which the attendees canwatch surgical procedures; the Opera-tory is equipped with three cameras –one on the patient, one on the doctorand one overlooking the room. Therealso will be several private Operatoriesbuilt where attendees will receivehands-on training. The program isvery interactive and Dr. Pikos encour-ages his colleagues to ask questions asthey watch procedures.

Dr. Pikos says, “We are unique inthat we are able to maintain cutting-edge technology in-office, such as CTscan units specifically for the head andneck utilizing CBCT (Cone BeamComputed Tomography). We werethe first to have CBCT in Tampa Baywhen we added it in 2005 and thesecond in Florida. This technologyalong with tissue engineering tech-nology and related technologies thatI’ve brought to Coastal Jaw Surgeryand the Institute throughout theyears has provided a backgroundwhere I have long-term follow-upwith patients and as a result, I’m ableto show what works literally overtime. Therefore, we are very science-based.”

Dr. Pikos has made it his missionto provide surgical and technologybased training programs in an inti-mate setting with limited attendanceand a learning environment that fos-ters enthusiastic camaraderie amongstcolleagues. Other dentists have re-sponded to Dr. Pikos’ program with

enthusiasm because they leave thePikos Implant Institute with newknowledge that they can take back totheir patients, and they are very ap-preciative of Dr. Pikos unique skillsand teaching abilities.

James Maxwell, OMS, fromSpringfield, OH says, “The constantavailability of the speaker and willing-ness to interact with the attendees isunparalleled. The marriage of evi-dence based material and years ofclinical experience is unrivaled.” AndNeil Sullivan, OMS, from Annapolis,MD writes, “The pursuit of dentalimplant surgical excellence is thrivingat the Pikos Implant Institute.”

Dr. Pikos is very thankful to hisstaff and others who have been a bigpart of making the Pikos Implant In-stitute into the cutting-edge facilitythat it is today. “It was a real collabo-rative effort,” says Dr. Pikos. “I am soblessed. Our Coastal Jaw Surgerystaff is fantastic – they really are in-credible, from the assistants to thefront desk and office administratorKathy Diaz. Invaluable to him is thePikos Implant Institute team: Admin-istrator Alison Thiede, Mark Robin-son, Informational TechnologyDirector, and Videographer JamiWalls. Dr. Pikos also wishes to thankthe following people who were in-strumental in bringing his dreams toreality: building contractor RobertBandes of Bandes ConstructionCompany, architect Mark Jonnatti ofJonnatti Architecture, decorator JeanAlli of Jean Alli Designs and the Su-perintendent of the building, JohnBrasher.
