REDuCING COST Of ELECTRICITY wITH GE'S ADVANCED SILICON CARBIDE TECHNOLOGY:
LEADING ThE wAy IN SOLAr TEChNOLOGyAs a leading technology company, GE is the driving force behind the evolution of high performance electric power systems, and has been a reliable and trusted partner to help plant operators and owners drive down the levelized cost of electricity (LCOE) through technology innovations.
GE was the first to launch the 1,500V inverter technology in 2012 which has helped customers to reduce the cost of energy through a more efficient farm layout, saving up to 3% in CAPEx and up to 15% in OPEx. Today the 1,500V inverter technology is well proven and benefits from a large installed base of 4 Gw worldwide.
However, innovation does not stop its pace. Today, GE is once again demonstrating how constant innovation with profound expertise and understanding of customer challenges is allowing the renewables industry to gain in efficiency to lower the cost of electricity. GE Power Conversion is now introducing Silicon Carbide (SiC) technology into its 1500V inverter product line, bringing unmatched power conversion efficiency to the PV industry.
SILICON CArbIDE APPLICATIONS: SMALL DEVICE, brOAD IMPACT IN POwEr ELECTrONICSToday, silicon-based devices are used as 'industry workhorse' managing power in everything from portable electronics to industrial-scale equipment. for high-power applications, SiC is the future. This advanced technology allows power electronics to switch faster and more efficiently, in a smaller footprint.
for over two decades, GE has demonstrated the world’s best performance in power devices, advanced packaging and power electronic applications with Silicon Carbide technology. GE has started commercializing new SiC-enabled products and is pushing new developments to allow for more widespread commercial adoption of other SiC applications including power converters, general controls, and solid state power distribution based products for GE Aviation, Energy and Healthcare.
bUILDING ThE wOrLD’S fIrST MULTI-MEGAwATT-SCALE SILICON CArbIDE bASED SOLAr INVErTEr As one of the leading technology companies in the world, GE is the first to introduce its advanced Silicon Carbide (SiC) technology to the utility scale solar PV industry with world’s first multi-megawatt-scale SiC solar demonstrator inverter installed in the uS.
KEY BENEfITSSilicon Carbide (SiC) based power electronic devices have significant advantages over Silicon (Si) in capabilities. Silicon Carbide switches faster and can operate at much higher switching frequencies and temperatures, while still converting electric power with higher efficiency. Additionally, SiC-based devices manage the same level of power as Si devices at approximately half the size, which will enable dramatic increases in power density and reliability. Applied to solar inverters, it allows for simpler cooling and fewer parts, thus a smaller, more compact inverter footprint.

GE POWER DIGITAL SOLUTIONS I Software Catalog 2016
To address these issues and to enable power leaders the opportunity to increase profitability from machine
data and analytics, GE developed the DPP, delivering capabilities in the following areas:
Software Defined Machines: Unlike traditional operations machines, where applications for that equipment
were built into firmware and notoriously difficult to connect to the Industrial Internet, new breeds of assets
autonomously connect to the Industrial Internet, execute native or cloud-based machine applications, analyze
collected data and respond to changes in that data.
Predix™, the Cloud Platform for the Industrial Internet: GE’s platform for the Industrial Internet, combines
best of breed technologies for massive data ingestion, analytic modeling and execution, asset libraries and a
sophisticated User Interface (UI). Predix machine is an on-site gateway for data cleansing and communications
and for executing analytics at the edge, required for near real-time response. This environment was industrial
built to manage the data and analytics required for power companies to gain operational benefits and action-
based recommendations.
Digital Twin: An organized collection of physics-based methods and advanced analytics used to model the
present state of every asset in a Digital Power Plant. GE applications use the Digital Twin to model solutions,
execute “what if” scenarios and to drive outcomes based on analytic models that mirror and predict the
functions of the physical assets.
Suite of Applications: Leveraging data from software defined machines and the GE Digital Twin, a complete set
of applications designed to improve asset performance and reliability, to increase operation efficiency and to
give power business leaders insights that allow them to make more profitable decisions.

ThE PATh TO DIGITAL TrANSfOrMATIONOver recent years, data analysis has become a crucial method for organizations looking to gain insights into their operations, enabling them to spot inefficiencies and allowing them to make informed decisions, which can help to save costs and improve productivity.
while this is true for a huge range of industries, adopting this data-led operating model and embracing the Industrial Internet could hold huge benefits for the solar industry in particular. By analyzing the Big Data sets collected by Industrial Internet technologies, operators can unlock new insights into how they can run their plants more efficiently by picking up on inefficiencies and problems sooner, saving time and money.
To harness the power from the Big Data requires working with a partner who shares the same vision, and has both the industrial expertise and software capability. As the world’s premier digital industrial company, GE is your ideal partner for this new journey.

bUSINESS ChALLENGESSolar power can often be limited by inclement weather and night cycles, which has led to an average 20% capacity factor of solar farms. As the periods of ideal weather conditions are so precious, it’s critical that unplanned downtime is avoided or minimized.
The scale of solar farms is growing rapidly, pushing their locations to more distant areas in relation to where the power is set to be used. This increased scale, combined with the fact that they are usually built in isolated locations, means operators are faced with a whole new range of challenges.
Solar power is now being adopted in many developing and mature economies as a significant part of the energy mix. By monitoring equipment and analyzing data, solar operators can further reduce costs and ensure more accurate, efficient and reliable power generation to allow solar to continue to grow market share in the energy landscape.
GE’S ASSET PErfOrMANCE MANAGEMENTConnecting the physical and digital world, GE brings advanced Asset Performance Management (APM), using data and analytics to reduce unplanned downtime, improve reliability, minimize the total cost of ownership and operational risks.
APM connects multiple data sources and uses advanced analytics to turn that data into actionable insights while fostering collaboration and knowledge management across the organization. A commercial cloud solution, built on the Predix™ platform, APM also gives organizations the flexibility to develop new analytics and applications, making it adaptable to meet changing needs.
understanding where to begin, next steps and mapping the course to digital success requires working with a partner who shares this vision, can support with appropriate solutions today, and has a road map for innovation and growth for the future.
