THE MAIN BUILDING OF THE LVIV POLYTECHNIC NATIONAL UNIVERSITY

after the technical academy had been awarded the status of school of higher education in 1871, construction of a new building, which would not only correspond to the high status of the academy, but which would also meet the requirements of technical education, became quite urgent. the design of the new building was worked out by the professor of the technical academy Yu. Zacharievych. the work over the design of the new technical school was completed in 1872. construction of the Main building of the technical academy, supervised by Yu. Zacharievych, was begun in 1874 and was completed in 1877. construction of the Main building started a long history of the formation and development of the architectural complex of lviv polytechnic. nowadays, the building accommodates the rector’s office, the university administration offices, the department of postgraduate studies, as well as the different departments of the lviv polytechnic.

educational building no. 1 with lecture halls, classrooms and laboratory rooms was the first building of the complex of buildings designed by the student project and construction bureau (the spcb) of lviv polytechnic institute. the project of the building was developed by professor i. bahenskyy and the lecturers-architecs of the faculty of building such as: r. lypka, a. rudnytskyy and M. Mykula in 1960 - 1966. in charge of all construction works, from the chief engineer and onwards, were the graduates of lviv polytechnic institute. notwithstanding the fact that the building was designed more than 50 years ago, it serves well its purpose up till our days and fully satisfies modern-time functional needs. the first floor of the central part of the building was occupied by the spacious double-height assembly hall for 1 000 persons with the galleries.

THE STUDENT’S CAFE OF THE LVIV POLYTECHNIC NATIONAL UNIVERSITY

in the early 1970's lviv polytechnic institute was actively developing: new dormitories, a library, new educational buildings for different faculties were being constructed. the number of students and teachers was also growing. the then existing catering at the institute and its premises could not satisfy the growing needs of the institute. this posed the problem of creating appropriate conditions for adequate alimentation of students and teachers of the institute. thus, the idea to build a restaurant for 850 seats with the production capacity of the kitchen unit for 20 thousand conditional dishes arose. the building was designed in 1971–1974 by h. shevchuk, i. petryshyn, v. kravtsov, r.hrom, Yu. khilobok. because the function of the building was a servicing one, the authors formulated the concept of its “non-domination” among the surrounding educational buildings. the architectural solution of the façades acquired a public character.
