The definition of Martini has changed over time to include several categories of cocktails. The post-prohibition definition of a martini expanded to include gin or vodka with a splash of vermouth, shaken or stirred. In the early 1980’s, the definition changed yet again to include any libation put in a “martini glass.” It’s this 1980’s definition that we are paying homage to and elevating.

FYI: The original 1870’s Martini consists of London Dry Gin Dry, French vermouth, and a few healthy dashes of orange bitters. Classically stirred (NOT SHAKEN!) and served up, this bartender favorite is always available upon request.

MADISON CocktailsOLD FASHIONED

Rye OLD FASHIONED $14This is the original whiskey used for most classic cocktails. This pleasantly spicy spirit is defined as having at least 51% Rye in the mash bill, made in America, and aged in new American oak. Bartenders tend to veer towards Rye while building cocktails for its full flavor and surprising versatility… not for the faint of heart.

bourbon OLD FASHIONED $14Legally defined as containing at least 51% corn in the mash bill while being produced in the U.S. and aged in new American oak, Bourbon is inclined to be a sweeter, more unctuous version of its spicy cousin. This version of whiskey tends to be more approachable and balanced. If you’re a novice to whiskey, this is as good a place as any to begin.

mezcal OLD FASHIONED $14The less famous of the two major agave based spirits, Mezcal derives most of its flavor from being smoked in a pit. Made from 30 different varieties of agave, this spirit definitely provides a depth of flavor and is perfectly suited for a spirit-forward cocktail such as an old fashioned.

For the better part of 80 years, what we have come to know as the Old Fashioned was actually simply named “cocktail.” The definition of an old fashioned (and a cocktail) is: spirit, sugar, and bitters. When bartenders began expanding the definition of cocktail to include sours the name “Old Fashioned” was born. We created four variations of the original Rye Whiskey Old Fashioned by switching out and highlighting the base spirit.
