Understanding Breast Massage

To Understand Why Breast Massage Is Important And How It Works, We Need To Know A Little

About Breast Anatomy & Physiology…

Breast Anatomy

Page 13: Lymphatic Breast Massage

The breast is a specialized gland that

grows as an appendage of the skin.

It sits on top of the Retromammary Space which sits directly on top of the Pectroralis

Major Muscle.

Page 14: Lymphatic Breast Massage

Between the Lobes and filling out the breast contour is Fat, which is

the major component of the breast.

Individual breast size and shape is somewhat dependent on the amount of fat in the breast.

Page 15: Lymphatic Breast Massage

The functional unit of the breast is a glandular

system of 15 – 20 Lobes that produce and deliver

milk to the nursing infant.

Each Lobe contains 20 – 40 clusters of milk producing

cells called Lobules.

• The lymphatic system bathes every cell in our body, filtering and destroying toxins.

• In the breast, lymph flows from superficial to deep and most lymph exits the breast through the Retromammary Space at the rear of the breast.

The Lymphatic System

Lymph Flow Can Be Restricted Due To:

Engorgement and Swelling

Scar Tissue From Accidents

or Surgeries

Tight Muscles Poor Posture

Page 18: Lymphatic Breast Massage

More Factors That Can Restrict Lymph Flow

Emotional Holding

Thoracic Outlet Syndrome and Other Medical

Conditions

Sedentary Lifestyles

Social Mores That Inhibit Breast

Movement

Restrictive Clothing Such As Poorly Fitted Bras Worn for Extended

Periods That Impede Lymph Flow Through the Retromammary Space!

About 75% of lymph drains to the axillary (underarm) nodes. These nodes filter lymph and destroy

undesirable substances.

Most breast cancer cancers occur in the

upper outer quadrant of the breast, the

portion nearest the axilla.

All breast cancer originates in the lining of the milk

ducts.

Page 20: Lymphatic Breast Massage

Lymph movement through the body is largely dependent on muscle contraction and body movement.

Movement of Lymph

Page 21: Lymphatic Breast Massage

Unlike the rest of the body, there is very little muscle

tissue in the breasts, further restricting the flow of lymph.

The natural rebounding action of breasts is the main method of

drainage for breast tissue.

Lymph can become stagnant

in the breast, retaining toxins and inhibiting

proper nutrition to breast tissues.

When lymph cannot move easily, breast

health is compromised.

Lymph Drainage Through The Retromammary Space

Breast Massage is designed to move lymph out the of the breast through the Retrommamary Space

(loose connective tissue that allows the breast to move freely on

the chest) and other channels.

Breast Massage also aids in venous drainage and in bringing fresh oxygen and nutrients to the

tissues.
