About Breast Anatomy & Physiology…


Breast Anatomy


The breast is a specialized gland that

grows as an appendage of the skin.

It sits on top of the Retromammary Space which sits directly on top of the Pectroralis

Major Muscle.


Between the Lobes and filling out the breast contour is Fat, which is

the major component of the breast.

Individual breast size and shape is somewhat dependent on the amount of fat in the breast.


The functional unit of the breast is a glandular

system of 15 – 20 Lobes that produce and deliver

milk to the nursing infant.

Each Lobe contains 20 – 40 clusters of milk producing

cells called Lobules.


• The lymphatic system bathes every cell in our body, filtering and destroying toxins.

• In the breast, lymph flows from superficial to deep and most lymph exits the breast through the Retromammary Space at the rear of the breast.

Most breast cancer cancers occur in the

upper outer quadrant of the breast, the

portion nearest the axilla.

All breast cancer originates in the lining of the milk

ducts.


Lymph movement through the body is largely dependent on muscle contraction and body movement.

tissue in the breasts, further restricting the flow of lymph.

The natural rebounding action of breasts is the main method of

drainage for breast tissue.

Lymph can become stagnant
