A DIGITALENVIRONMENT FOSTERINGINNOVATION

In the Lyon Métropole the digital sector is a powerful springboard for change and innovation, both for the region and for the local economy. The city’s policies are designed to dynamize and structure the ecosystem,

introduce and implement digital services for users, and create a federating body that stimulates networking and fosters innovation. Well-honed governance gives

the region’s digital entities an exponentially improved capacity for action.

Making life easier for usersThe goal is to provide users with personalized, contextualized, and organized services, whilst ensuring platforms remain neutral (the projects Urban Pass and Digital Window, and the aim to make public space a communicative, creative element). When it comes to innovation, it is essential to work with users and economic players (open innovation).

Urban Pass A trailblazing tool: a unique passport to the region’s facilities and services (transport, cultural events and institutions, sports activities etc.).

Digital WindowA tool to personalize daily administrative tasks and make life easier for the people of the Lyon Métropole.

The digital revolution - boosting transformation of the city and its businesses The Lyon Métropole is making digital technology a vector for innovation across every sector of its local economy and supporting businesses as they make the digital transition. The smart city program launched in 2013 seizes the opportunities that come with digital technology to change the way we live in the city. TUBÀ, Urban Lab, Club Open Innovation and a whole range of other initiatives are helping to make this ambition a reality.

Territory-wide data oversightThe Lyon Métropole has created an unprecedented atmosphere of trust around data, acting as community coordinator for the region’s data producers, a trusted third party, and a liaison officer for re-users (entrepreneurs, researchers, etc.), particularly through TUBÀ.

The aim is to accelerate the region’s economic development by making the most of the high-added-value resources that are metropolitan data, whilst promoting cooperation between public and private entities to boost open innovation and the creation of digital services.

With a strong culture of entrepreneurship and collaboration, along with ambitious programs and systems - both public and private -

to support projects and new ideas, Lyon has everything an entrepreneur could wish for.

Lyon has a clear objective - to make every possibility a reality.

ADRIEN DESLOUS-PAOLIis a 25-year-old student-entrepreneur and Chairman and CEO of the company De Rigueur, specializing in handcrafted leather goods incorporating smart objects. His company has already received numerous awards.

How did your entrepreneurial project first develop? It was while I was at college in Lille that I founded De Rigueur with two friends of mine. Our original project of handcrafted leather quickly evolved to integrating smart objects into the articles we made, to meet a clear need for both users and luxury goods companies. Coming back to develop this project in Lyon, my hometown, was the obvious next step. Lyon has a varied and vibrant ecosystem, reasonable cost of living and wages, good quality of life and, above all, is the perfect city for developing the visions of a budding enterprise.

What kind of support did you receive as young entrepreneurs?Lyon has a vast network of players who provide support to companies at every stage of their launch and subsequent development. We were assisted by a number of different structures – everything from helping us establish our business model to providing us with premises, professional coaching and training, as well as financial support to help us develop our products. This meant we could quickly trial our concept to ensure its viability. Getting quality support is a vital element of success.

“Lyon is an incubator city, but that’s not all - there are plenty

of reasons to stay here, too!”

XAVIER DELPLANQUEage 35, Director of Sirup Lab. He chose Lyon to develop a new high-end mobile application project.

Why did you leave Silicon Valley for Lyon?My wife and I had lived abroad for several years and we wanted to come back to France. We were looking for a city that would let us build our careers without sacrificing our personal lives. Lyon was the city that attracted us the most - from a professional standpoint, the city has a lot of potential, it’s attractive, and has good quality of life.

What did you discover here in Lyon?I found an extremely welcoming digital ecosystem. I got to know a lot of people and influential players, including La Cuisine du Web, all very enthusiastic and motivated. The atmosphere is less formal than in some cities, people are easy-going and easy to get to know, without detracting from the groundbreaking technical level found in this region.

“Lyon really has what it takes to attract talent, and staying here to expand my business was clearly the best choice

I could possibly make.”

Project support

A number of support systems and structures are available for people with startup projects, including the LVE network (Lyon Ville de l’Entrepreneuriat - “Lyon, City of Entrepreneurship”), Lyon Start Up and Lyon French Tech. Every entrepreneur can find tailor-made support for starting and developing a business.

There are a number of specialized initiatives to encourage dialogue, guidance and healthy competition between digital startups: specialist incubators, boosters, accelerators, hothouses, business foundations etc.

DYNAMIC NETWORKS FOR A DYNAMIC

ECOSYSTEMLyon, the flagship of digital excellence, had the wisdom to structure its ecosystem.

The city’s digital sector formed a network to bring together industry players and give them opportunities to exchange ideas, work alongside each other and grow together.

The French Tech dynamic has also strengthened and unified the ecosystem and helped promote Lyon worldwide, taking the city and its digital sectors to an entirely new level.

PATRICK BERTRANDis the CEO of Cegid, a leading French publisher of management software and cloud services that celebrated its 30th year of business in 2013. Since 2015, he has also been President of the Lyon French Tech association.

What is the role of Lyon French Tech? This organization serves to coordinate and build relationships between digital players, stimulate the French Tech dynamic across the region, and give it momentum abroad. Its objective is to generate a powerful regional dynamic that gets everyone on board, and we do this through specific network initiatives that promote Lyon both within in France and around the world. We have chosen to maintain a small, streamlined team, because our role is not to act in place of those in the ecosystem, but to provide them with opportunities to act.

“Lyon French Tech will help nurture emerging companies

so they can achieve international recognition.”

What does the association bring to the ecosystem?Lyon French Tech is a gateway to the entire network. The aim is to steer members, particularly startups, to the right people to fast track their development. The association also encourages the different players within the ecosystem to work together and network. Many envy the breadth, depth, and diversity of this network, which has boosted Lyon’s appeal. It’s now up to us, together, to make it a catalyst for the region itself. Our entrepreneurial spirit and capacity for working together form Lyon’s trademark.

Business clusters

Digital and creative contentA competitive cluster for the content and digital application industries (video games, cinema, audiovisual, animation, multimedia, digital books, robotics, smart objects, etc.), Imaginove, with its 220 members, brings together the region’s companies, schools, and laboratories to boost innovation and develop synergies.

Software and Digital ServicesWith 350 members, the business cluster of the Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes region unites, promotes, and stimulates the emergence of software and digital services champions. Its aim is to create and develop one of Europe’s leading digital clusters.

Associations

IT/TechThe informal Lyon Tech Hub group brings together 30 of Lyon’s IT communities whose members – fans, experts, casual explorers, and professionals – share a desire to learn and share.

WebLa Cuisine du Web is founded on an active and far-reaching ecosystem, representing some 9,000 employees, which aims to promote web and digital entrepreneurship in Lyon. Its role is as an “action tank” to help the sector’s businesses and professionals.

Uses of digital technology for SMEsEach year, the ENE provides support for hundreds of SMEs and SOHOs as they undergo digital transition and transformation. ENE provides a wide range of services including information, guidance, best practices, prototyping and software testing.

Network infrastructure Because the digital industry needs quality network infrastructures to properly develop, Rezopole helps improve conditions for very-high-speed broadband internet access (GIX) and mobilizes local Telecom players.

Local authoritiesThe Réseau de Territoires Innovants (innovative territories network) is a national, Lyon-based association that promotes dissemination of best practices related to the use of new technologies by local authorities.

Lyon Tech Hub

Lyon French Tech, the French Tech dynamic in practice Federate, accelerate, exert influence, these are the watchwords of the association formed just after the Lyon Métropole earned the French Tech label. It serves as a gateway for businesses. The association, coordinated by a team of 21 ecosystem representatives, focuses on develo-ping ties and unity, fostering networking, co-building projects, and promoting the city’s dynamism in other countries around the world.

The association’s approach represents the entire ecosystem - its hubs and clusters, academic players, businesses, innovation and support structures, institutional players, etc.

Page 10: Lyon digital hub: brochure 2016

The Lyon Métropole ensures startups enjoy a seamless journey all along the entrepreneurial chain, offering every form of support they may require.

It is a journey that generates tremendous added value, with excellent, proven systems and services, all to encourage networking between the region’s many digital players.

GAUTIER CASSAGNAUis 32-year-old CEO and Co-Founder of Geolid, a pioneer in local internet advertising. His company, created in 2010, has just raised €10 million in venture capital to expand internationally.

In what way did the various support programs help you?The Réseau Entreprendre network has supported us since our very beginnings. Their support helped us develop from a student status to that of entrepreneur. We also benefited from the EMLYON Incubator, the Pépites (Emerging Tech Champions) program and the Pass French Tech. Each program helped us to grow. Having the guidance of more experienced professionals is vital - you don’t feel so alone, other people’s success is incredibly motivational and gives you courage.

“We have so much to learn from experienced professionals.”

What is your opinion of these support systems?I’m convinced that Geolid would not be what it is today had it not been for the support we received. Our company has done well thanks to our employees, naturally, but also the various people and organizations we encountered who helped us along the way. Six years ago, when we were just starting out, the network was already dynamic. Today, there are even more programs and support systems for startups, and that’s something to really take advantage of, especially since it’s done without glitz and fluff here – it’s focused on value and job creation.

A REGION FOR

EXPERIMENTING, INNOVATING AND

PROTOTYPINGThe Lyon Métropole has more than 50 facilities for innovation

and experimentation. Open spaces, community spaces, technology spaces - they give project developers the opportunity to trial, develop, and implement

their innovations. Makerspaces, living labs, coworking, technology platforms, public and private data - a vast web of opportunity.

All share a key ambition - to make Lyon the gold standard in innovation hubs.

The community Fab Lab in Bron is open to all who have a desire to learn or improve - additive manufacturing, 3D modeling, vector graphics, electronics and more.

“Makers are the people who are dreaming up and building the world of tomorrow. In Lyon, these multitalented engineers have become the musketeers of innovation, joining forces in an emerging, vibrant ecosystem with tremendous influence potential. A number of places and events are developing across the region, like the ‘Maker Faire Lyon’, helping the movement to develop in a structured way.”

LÉTHICIA RANCURELage 43, has managed TUBÀ, a space for urban experimentation, since its creation in 2013.

“With TUBÀ, the city of tomorrow is being built

on innovation and collaboration.”

Living labs – hack labs

TUBÀ is both a collaborative urban laboratory and a place for experimenting, teaching, and sharing know-how, a place unlike any other in France that helps develop the urban services of the future, by working with local inhabitants. It is centrally located in the Part-Dieu district and supported by key “smartcity” enterprises – large companies, innovative SMEs and startups – as well as by the Lyon Métropole and, more widely, by the expertise of research laboratories, hubs and clusters.

This space for open-source community innovation, a local branch of La Paillasse, is intended as a physical platform for dialogue, exchange, collaboration, and co-construction of sustainable solutions and citizen input.

This space is dedicated to prototyping and experimentation for digital and smart-city projects, and is run by Erasme, the “Do It Yourself” of public policy.

A network of the Lyon Métropole’s coworking spacesThe Lyon Métropole’s eight coworking spaces have joined forces and drawn up a common charter in order to defend their values and represent a social and economic reality that has become global.

There are innovation spaces opening in the Lyon area. What do you make of this? It’s the very essence of innovation - the only risk we take is not trying something! It’s important to encourage these initiatives to proliferate; the market will find its own form naturally. Everyone will find their own place in Lyon’s digital network, which is already very diverse and well-organized, with the aim of working hand in hand with the various players in that network.

In what way is TUBÀ unique in France? This is the only place that offers the opportunity to generate ideas, consult data (private and public) and test a project directly with real people, in a participatory manner, to prove a concept. It brings together the whole ecosystem, enabling the various players to get together easily and simply. Since it opened, TUBÀ has grown rapidly and is expanding what it offers. Soon it will open a new location to house a greater number of startups.

If Lyon is one of the world’s 20 most attractive cities*, and the leading city in France for the quality of its educational programs, that is due in part

to its dynamic and diverse selection of colleges, universities, and advanced laboratories. With 300 different training possibilities in the digital sector, the Lyon Métropole offers students both the public and private teaching

they need and innovative learning models suitable for all profiles. When it comes to research, our public and private laboratories invent, think,

design, and develop the digital technologies of tomorrow.

Engineering and High TechLyon is home to some of France’s best engineering and research schools: the École Normale Supérieure (bachelor’s and master’s in fundamental computer science), INSA Lyon, one of the largest multidisciplinary and international French engineering schools, and Centrale Lyon (general engineering and multidisciplinary doctorates).

ManagementEMLYON, one of Europe’s major business schools, gives future entrepreneurs a springboard for pursuing their entrepreneurial projects.

Many private training options are also available including Epitech, WIS, Digital Campus, ESCEN, ESPI, Wild Code School, etc.

LAURENT ET OLIVIER DE LA CLERGERIEaged 45 and 43, are Chairman and General Manager, respectively, of LDLC.com. In 2015, they founded École LDLC, a school to train tomorrow’s up-and-comers in digital culture.

Two original initiatives in Lyon’s digital education system

ÉCOLE LDLCA vocational school to train digital executives and generalists. The unique, three-year program is designed to reveal students’ hidden talents, train them in digital professions and their applications, and prepare them to be responsive in an ever-evolving economy.

SIMPLON.COA new school that offers a free and intensive six-month web and mobile development training course. As students are selected solely on the basis of their motivation and social criteria, and not on academic degrees, the school demonstrates a strong social commitment to support job opportunities and train marginalized groups.

“Our school was founded by a business, for businesses!”

Why create École LDLC?All companies have to make the transition to digital, not just startups, and yet we sorely lack professional profiles with a digital culture. Many training programs help pave the way to working in standard digital trades, but none instills this cross-culture vision that is so needed. Our school trains future entrepreneurs that are “cable-ready” and set to hit the ground running, fully in touch with the entrepreneurial world and its needs.

Why Lyon? Our company is based in Lyon and we wanted our school to live and develop here. The city has a vibrant digital ecosystem, which makes it the perfect home for this project, which is another thread in the already high-quality, well-known fabric of technical schools. It also means we can take advantage of being close to our students to share in each other’s experience. It was essential for us to be in touch, within reach, and responsive, and Lyon makes that possible.

The Lyon Métropole offers a high-quality and diverse range of properties, all with good services and infrastructure, ensuring that every individual

and business can find the perfect premises to launch their project. The region is structured around 4 major digital hubs set within urban

centers, weaving a dynamic fabric across the region to foster dialogue and collaboration.

COMPLEMENTARY

DIGITAL HUBS

FRANCK TARPIN-BERNARDage 46, is Managing Director of the SBT (Scientific Brain Training) group, specializing in cognitive science. Since 2015, he has been serving as Chairman of the Imaginove business cluster at the Pôle Pixel hub in Villeurbanne.

In what way is Pôle Pixel important for Imaginove? What could be more natural than working within a cluster of firms specializing in digital content and creative industries? It means we can be closer to our members and directly liaise with the field. Today, Imaginove is expanding well beyond Pôle Pixel, but we still enjoy the advantages of having such close ties with these companies within a dynamic, expanding hub.

“Lyon offers the specialist skills and expertise required to attract businesses of all sizes.”

Villeurbanne – Pôle PixelDigital activities are centered in and around the Pôle Pixel, a collection of 100 companies specializing in digital and creative content spread over 15,000 m² in this booming area. The site has an incubator, movie studios, a Fab Lab, schools, a coworking space, a business cluster, laboratories specializing in digital applications and digital arts, and an entire ecosystem of companies and providers.

Lyon Part-Dieu DistrictFrance’s second largest business district is an urban hub that has attracted a diverse range of players from a variety of key sectors, all interested in its central location and superior connectivity. The district is undergoing a complete overhaul, and is also the local showcase for major digital experiments - Part-Dieu is home to TUBÀ living lab and is working on a Smart Station project.

VaiseThis district, long a digital center, is home to many key players in software and services. Its focus is on an expanding service sector and it continues to play a key role in the software and services sectors. New players in the web industry have enhanced the range of digital solutions provided here.

Lyon ConfluenceThis hub, heavily focused on innovation, media, and creative interests, is set to become a veritable mecca for startup fast-tracking and high-impact networking with the city’s three other digital poles, all by virtue of the French Tech label and the new Totem building.Lyon Confluence, a downtown urban project unlike any other in Europe in terms of scale, is a precursor to the city of the future and ultimately intends to be home to 25,000 jobs.

Not in Lyon yet?

What do you think of the real estate available in Lyon?Lyon has a rich, diverse and high-quality property market. There are digital pockets scattered all across the region, each with its own hallmarks. There are spaces available for small businesses (coworking, shared services, etc.), but large companies, too, can find good premises at affordable prices. Everyone can find something to suit their budget and needs.

Page 18: Lyon digital hub: brochure 2016

Major events of national and international scope are held throughout the year. Each week, local stakeholders organize activities to keep

the community strong and active. Lyon’s watchwords are networking, innovation and creativity, with collective inspiration a constant feature.

STÉPHANIE GIBERT AND PAOLA JESSONaged 42 and 43, cofounded the company Cobees and are the organizers of SIdO, held for the second time in 2016.

“It’s rather extraordinary to work so closely with other players in the field.”

Is it easy to hold events in Lyon?We were astonished – in a positive way – by how immediately accessible the network was, how much support we got, and how much it wanted to help create this event with us; we’d never encountered that anywhere else before. And that reflects Lyon’s ecosystem. It meant we could create an event that brings people and businesses together, built in partnership with the actual players, and that’s what has made SIdO such a great success.

LYON'S,

PERPETUAL EFFERVESCENCE

Why choose Lyon as the venue for the SIdO?The region as a whole is heavily involved in the Internet of Things - research laboratories and cutting-edge technology, true design expertise and a prominent digital ecosystem. It was the obvious choice for us, as it had a concentration of the key success factors already well developed across the region. Lyon is also centrally located within Europe, easily reached, and has great reception facilities, like the Cité internationale, where the event takes place.
