Youll be cut from the same cloth as John Madden and VinceLombardi. Your players will lay it all on the line for you and youll

attract free agents as well. Being a motivator will also give you a

25% discount on packages that increase a free agents interest in

signing with your team as well as 25% off packages to decrease

the odds of a player retiring.

Youre one of the smartest men in football when it comes to the

Xs and Os, perhaps the next Bill Walsh. Being a strategist will

give you a 25% discount on XP boost packages, the Coach XP

package, discount packages which reduces the XP cost for your

    players, and the Predictability Package.

Being the head coach is only one of the hats you wear. Scouting

and roster management are also key components of your abili-

ties. Being a team builder will give you a 25% discount in packagesthat increase the interest of a player re-signing with you, the

Each coach in Madden NFL 13 will have a Coach Level. It beginsat Level 1 and will go up to Level 4. If you create a coach, youll

enter the league as a Level 1. This will give you easier team goals,

but youll be paying full price for packages. As you begin to

have success, youll begin to level up. A Level 4 coach will have

extremely high team goals but will be able to purchase packages

    at a discounted price.

Youre essentially a rst round draft pick. Youll come in with thehighest ratings but will also have lofty goals that will be tougher

to meet. Choosing this backstory gives you the quickest way to

crack the starting lineup and contribute right away.

Youve been drafted near the end of the draft. Youll have medio-

cre ratings and will have to really excel in practice and in the pre-

season just to earn a few snaps in your rst year. However, your

goals will not be set quite as high. Choosing this backstory makes

it less likely to see signicant playing time in year one, but has

the chance to develop later on.

Youve been completely ignored and were not selected in the

draft. Your ratings will be much lower than the other backstories

and youll have to scratch and claw for every piece of XP you can

get. Choosing the backstory will provide the toughest grind andyou can expect to not see much playing time in the rst season.

speed, agility, jumping and catching where as an offensive lineman

is weighed on run, pass, and impact blocking.

Calculated off of a players intangible ratings. Player type and

position are also taken into consideration. For example, a QBs

Five brand new ratings are introduced in Connected Careers andplay a big role. These ratings give each team an authentic identity

to who they are and how they construct their football team. It wil

be important to understand what these new ratings do and how

they are calculated. These new ratings do not affect your player

on the eld but instead are used to help shape the personality of

    each NFL organization.

example, a Power RB who is 60, 247lbs, would have a 99 size

rating. But if he were a Speed HB, his size grade would be consid-

    erably lower.

Calculated from the players season and career stats, position

with a production rating of 0. That will increase as he begins to

Calculated from a players durability rating. Injury, stamina, and

It is important to understand the scheme in which your teamruns and what player type they look for at a specic position.

Since each NFL team evaluates players differently, itll be essential

to know what peaks their interest and in turn, value you even

higher. For example, if youre a receiving back looking to crack into

the Arizona Cardinals starting lineup, you may nd yourself buried

on the depth chart. The Cardinals are a Power Run offense,

looking for a Power HB. Your overall rating will be lower in that

system than it will be in Miami, who is looking for a Receiving HB.

Spending XP as a coach is much different than spending it as aplayer. As a coach, youll have the option to spend your XP on

packages that will decrease the odds a player of a player retir-

ing, make it easier for you to re-sign a player, boost the amount

of XP a particular position earns, and even a package to increase

the amount of Scouting Points you earn every week.

As a coach, not only will you be accruing XP and Scouting Pointsto use for yourself, but your players will be earning XP based on

their in-game performance and own set of personal goals. One of

the great things about Connected Careers is that youll have the

option to apply that XP yourself or just have the AI do it for you.

The benets of applying XP on your own is that you can startto shape your players based on how you want them to t into

your system. If you want the smartest team in the league, use all

of your XP on Awareness and Play Recognition. However, if you

just want to beef up the weaknesses of players on your squad to

make them well-rounded contributors, you can go that route as

well. The choice is yours to make.

Of course, applying XP to every player on your roster can be time

consuming. So maybe after you get through spending the XP of

key players, you can back out and delegate the AI to apply every-

one elses XP. This will not only save time but ensure that every-

one is using the XP they have earned.

During each week of the regular season, youll have the ability totake a look at the upcoming draft class and begin to target who

Points will be limited so it will be important to have a good planand know what position you are weak in or what player is in the

nal year of his contract. Having a rm grasp on the state of

your team both in the present and future will steer you in the

right direction when it comes to scouting.

Another reason why it is so important to scout during the season

is that if you dont, youll have no knowledge of any player once

the draft comes along. Trying to blindly select a player will come

back to bite you more than ever in Madden NFL 13. For example,

if your team runs a 3-4 defensive scheme but you end up draft-

ing a 4-3 defensive end, your team will strongly downgrade that

defensive end because he does not t your system. The only way

to avoid errors like that is by scouting before the draft.

Another HUGE feature this year in Madden is the addition ofbranching storylines. Each year, there are a handful of players

whose path to the draft may take several twist and turns. What

that means is that it will be imperative to keep up with the draft

stories during the year -- just as much as it is to actually scout

the player. If you dont keep up with the storylines, you may run

the risk of banking on the cant-miss running back only to nd

out later that hes switched positions or even pulled out of the

    draft altogether.

nity to re-sign your own free agents to-be at this stage of the

offseason. But before you choose to re-sign a player, remember

that during the offseason its important to understand how much

You can also quickly view the player type and if he is a good t in

    your scheme.

When you do decide to go after a particular free agent, it will be

crucial to understand the contract offer screen. One of the major

areas to look at is the Desired column towards the top of the page.

This has both the years desired and the AVERAGE amount of money

per season the player is looking for.

In the example below, youll see that Aqib Talib wants a 5-year

contract that averages $8.80 million per season. In other words,

he seeks a deal that totals $44 million. You as the pseudo General

Manager in this situation, have a few options when it comes to

constructing this contract. The main one will be to use the signing

bonus as a way to give the player the money he wants while also

creating salary cap room for your team.

Once again referencing the screen below, the user has offered a 5-year

deal that averages $6 million in base salary with a signing bonus of $10

million ($2 million over the course of 5 years). Notice in the graph that

since the base salary is an average, that it starts off lower in the early

years of the contract and then progressively increases year after year. This brings the total value of the contract to $40 million and would be

considered a legitimate offer for Talib to consider.

After offering your initial contract to the free agents that youvetargeted, youll have to advance the week to get an update on the

player. Go back into the free agency screen and sort by My Negoti-

ations for a quick view of all the players you are attempting to sign.

At this point, youll see whether or not the player has a) decided

to sign with you b) accepted another teams offer or c) not made a

decision just yet. If the player has not made a decision, you have the

option to increase your offer, pull your offer, or keep it as is. Free

draft class. Arizona does have some pieces surrounding the QB

with Larry Fitzgerald, Beanie Wells, and the drafting of Michael

Floyd. Keep your opponents off guard with a nice mix of run andplay action pass.

The defense appears to be on the rise in Arizona. Calais Campbell is

poised to have a big year in 2012 and Daryl Washington looks like hel

be your middle linebacker for the next decade. Patrick Peterson had

an excellent rookie season and should continue to improve at CB.

The NFC West is much improved from years past, and the Cardinals

    are a big reason why.

Scouting for the Cardinals can lead you into a couple different direc-

tions. As mentioned before, youll need to decide if you have the

right QB on the roster right now or if you need to dip back into thedraft for your signal caller. TE appears to be the position in most

need on offense and in the 3-4 defense, you might need another

MLB to play alongside Daryl Washington.

    Playing as a Player

Arizona is a great place to play as a Field General QB. Youll be throw-ing to the likes of Larry Fitzgerald and Michael Floyd and its tough

to top that duo. Also, you have the ability to start from day 1 as a

Balanced TE, ahead of Todd Head and Jeff King. On defense, you

can step in as 3-4 Tackling MLB and get reps as the second inside

linebacker in this defense. Also, a Prototype CB can see some early

    action in Arizona.

The Atlanta Falcons is an organization ready to win and win now.The team is built around running the ball with Michael Turner and

using play action pass to get big plays down the eld from Roddy

White and Julio Jones. Tony Gonzalez is close to the end of his career

but is still one of the most effective TEs in the league.

The defense can be a difference maker as well. The front four is builtto put pressure on the opposing QB and the secondary, especially at

CB, can cover even the top receivers in the game. However, the loss

of Curtis Lofton leaves a huge gap in the middle of the defense. Con-

centrate on getting a lead early and letting your D-Line and second-

ary do what it does best!

The scouting department has a few areas to address. One is along

the offensive line. The center and right guard are starting to get

up in age and will need to be bolstered. Also, even if Tony Gonzalezsticks it out for another year, the depth at TE is lacking. The defense

needs an upgrade at SS and possibly another RE to groom once

    John Abraham is gone.

    Playing as a Player

If youre looking to crack the starting lineup on offense, you mightwant to try being the Receiving TE complement to Tony Gonzalez.

Also, there is an opportunity to come in as a Pocket Passing QB and

beat out Matt Ryan. It may take a year of practice to build up your

XP, but the job is there for the taking. The defense could use a

Balanced MLB or Balanced SS to instantly improve that side of the ball.

    Playing as a Coach

The Baltimore Ravens are a team on the cusp of a Super Bowlring. The roster has very few holes and some prime time players

in key positions. Running back, Ray Rice, is the foundation for

the offense. He has big play ability and the chance to take it to

the house every time he touches the ball. Joe Flacco has shown

glimpses of brilliance but still needs to be more consistent. Focus

on pounding the rock behind an above average offensive line forthe most success on offense.

Baltimore has been known for its defense for some time now and

they put another top tier squad on the eld in 2012. Haloti Ngata,

Ray Lewis, and Ed Reed bring playmakers at every level of the

defense. The one thing to keep in mind is that Terrell Suggs will be

injured to start the beginning of the 2012 season and rookie, Court-

ney Upshaw, will be replacing him.

The scouting department has only a few places to focus on to

improve the roster. Depth at running back will need to be addressed

and the same goes for wide receivers and tight ends. A position youdo not want to overlook is free safety. Ed Reed is nearing the end of

his career and his current backups leave a lot to be desired.

Playing as a PlayerThe Ravens are always looking for more offensive weapons. A

Possession WR or Balanced TE can expect to see some decentplaying time right away. Spots on defense are a little tougher to

come by. A 3-4 Pass Rushing LOLB can get some snaps in as well

as a Man to Man CB.

Coaching the Bills will provide some challenges but not insur-mountable ones. Buffalo spent its attention this past offseason on

upgrading the defense and they did just that. Signing Mario Williams

and Mark Anderson gives them an elite front 4 and the drafting of

Stephon Gilmore starts solidifying the secondary.

Buffalos offense is lacking repower. Fred Jackson and StevieJohnson are the standouts and the production drops off after that.

Youll have to make a decision on Ryan Fitzpatrick and if hes the

future as the Bills signal caller.

That decision might be easier if you nd a stud QB in the upcoming

draft. Fitzpatrick is serviceable but doesnt have one attribute that

stands out as elite. An argument can be made that the weaponsjust arent there for Fitzpatrick. Buffalo could certainly target a WR

or TE to help ease the pressure. Defensively, both outside lineback-

ers are creeping up in age and CB will still need to be bolstered.

    Playing as a Player

A Field General QB could easily start on the Bills as well as a RouteRunning WR or Balanced TE. The only spots on defense you wont

start at right away is along the defensive line. Youll have opportuni-

ties to see signicant playing time in the secondary as a Prototype

Cam Newton has reenergized the Carolina Panthers organization. The team hit it big when they drafted him last season and now look

to take the next step. The Panthers are built to run the ball and hit

big pass plays to Steve Smith. Carolina now has a 4 headed monster

on the ground with DeAngelo Williams, Jonathan Stewart, Mike

Tolbert, and of course Cam himself. Pound your opponent into sub-

mission and keep your defense fresh.

Speaking of defense, the Panthers hope they are headed in the right

direction with the drafting of Luke Kuechly at ROLB. That combined

with the return of Jon Beason should make this defense a lot more

formidable in 2012. There are still holes in the secondary, so be sure

Cutler. He provides a legitimate threat outside the numbers and in

But lets make no bones about it, Chicago is built on defense. With

You have plenty of options when it comes to scouting. The Bears

lack repower at the TE position as well as all along the offen-

    Playing as a Coach

Coaching the Cincinnati Bengals may be a dream come true forsome users. Most would agree that Cincinnati overachieved in

2011 by making the playoffs, but the foundation looks to be there.

The Bengals signed BenJarvus Green-Ellis in the offseason to be

their new HB and will look to mirror the same gameplan that won

games the previous year: run the ball, big plays by A.J. Green, and

    play great defense.

Speaking of defense, Cincinnati has a young and talented group. The

front 7 is quite stout and Nate Clements and Leon Hall are above

average CBs. Focus on stopping the run and then allow that defen-

sive line to wreck havoc on the QB.

The scouting department for the Bengals has to have a smile on

its face. Andy Dalton and A.J. Green are now in their second year

and that eliminates two key positions that you might have hadto address for the next decade. What Cincy lacks, is depth. After

Green, the WR core falls off and the same could be said for TEs

after Gresham. Also, dont overlook the CB position. 2 of your top 3

corners are over the age of 32 so make sure you inject some youth!

Playing as a PlayerAs good as Andy Dalton was for the Bengals his rookie year, thereis still room to overtake him with the right kind of player. That player

type that Bengals crave is a Field General QB. Come in and do well in

preseason and in practice and youll have no problem starting Week

    One.

A Red Zone Threat WR is also needed on offense. You wont come in

and be the number 1 receiver, but youll get solid playing time as the

number 2 and potentially be the go-to guy within a years time.

Your best bet to start right away on defense is to come in as a Run

Supporting SS. Youll do nothing but improve what is already one of

    the leagues best defenses.

The Cleveland Browns are a tough franchise to play with in Con-nected Careers. The roster is in need of improvements in multiple

areas and they play in arguably the toughest division in football. The

Browns are hoping they got on the right track with the drafting of

Trent Richardson and Brandon Weeden and addressing an offense

that did not strike fear in its opponents.

The defense will be the key in determining how well your season

moment s of brilliance and moments that youd like to forget. The

truth is, Dallas has the pieces in place to compete for a champion-

ship right now. Dez Bryant, Miles Austin, Jason Witten, and DeMarco

Murray are all excellent offensive weapons. You should have noproblem making opposing defenses pick their poison of getting

gauged on the ground or through the air.

Dallas spent this past offseason upgrading their secondary. They

signed free agent, Brandon Carr and drafted Morris Claiborne

in the rst round. There are still some questions at the safety

position but overall they are much improved. The defense is

built around DeMarcus Ware, the elite pass rushing OLB. Pres-

sure opposing offenses into making bad decisions and give your

    offense some great eld position.

The scouting department has a couple of clear goals. One of those isto continue to improve the offensive line, mainly the interior. Keeping

Tony Romo upright and making plays is key in Dallas offense. Also

look to upgrade both safety positions. A playmaking safety might be

what it takes to put the Cowboys over the top.

Playing as a PlayerThe Cowboys have some solid options at WR, but the door is open to

come in as a Speed WR and contribute right away. Even with a little

practice and standout games in the preseason, you may just start

the season as Tony Romos go-to guy. On defense, you can make a

splash as a Balanced FS or Prototype SS.

    Playing as a Coach

Coaching the Denver Broncos in 2012 will be a lot different than itwas in 2011, especially on offense. Tim Tebow gets traded away and

in comes Peyton Manning. Denver has an average supporting cast

and is hoping Peyton will maximize the talent. You might nd the

best way to move the ball on offense is with the short passing game

to help protect the lack of weapons and suspect offensive line.

The front 7 of the defense is very strong. Elvis Dumervil and Von

Miller provide elite pass rushers and Champ Bailey can still get it

done at the age of 34. This should be one of, if not the best defense

that Peyton Manning has been paired up with, making Denver a very

    intriguing team.

You do have some denite issues that can be addressed during the

draft. As mentioned earlier, the WR and TE position need depth and

there are multiple areas along the offensive line that need a boost. The glaring need on defense is at both safety positions. CB and DT

will need to be addressed due to the ages of your current starters.

Playing as a PlayerAs you would imagine, it might be tough to beat out Peyton

Manning right away, so you may want to look elsewhere. A BalancedWR or Receiving TE would see signicant playing time right away. On

The Detroit Lions came out of nowhere last season to become aserious contender in the NFC North. Matt Stafford stayed healthy

and threw for over 5,000 yards. A big chunk of that went to Calvin

Johnson, Jr. He may very well be the best WR in the NFL so make

sure you target him early and often. The Lions are full of receivers

and tight ends and have a solid stable of running backs. Putting up

points should be the least of your worries when coaching this team.

The Lions defense is centered on getting pressure from the front

four. Cliff Avril and Ndamukong Suh lead the charge on getting after

the QB. The linebacker squad has been taken a step up with the

addition of Stephen Tulloch. You wont need too many stops on D as

the Detroit offense can keep you in games that turn into shootouts.

    Playing as a Coach

The Green Bay Packers won the Super Bowl in 2010 and then went15-1 in the 2011 regular season. Clearly this is a team capable of going

all the way and it begins with Aaron Rodgers making plays at QB.

Hes developed into one of the elite QBs in the NFL which gives the

Packers a chance to win each and every week. A solid complement

of WRs, lead by Greg Jennings, and a Vertical Threat TE in Jermichael

Finley gives Rodgers a slew of weapons.

The Packers defense struggled in 2011, despite having serviceable

personnel. The drafting of Nick Perry should provide another pass

rushing threat besides Clay Matthews. Green Bay has a solid group

of corners but the safeties need to improve. If the Packers defense

takes a step forward this season, they will be awfully hard to beat.

The Packers are an elite team today due to killing it in previous

years drafts. Continue that success and Green Bay will remain

dominant for many more years to come. Addressing the runningback and LT positions is needed on the offensive side of the ball and

upgrading both safety spots will take your defense to the next level.

Playing as a PlayerThe one place where you can make an immediate impact on the

Packers offense is at running back. A Balanced HB can come in andstart from Day 1 and provide the balance that Aaron Rodgers needs.

The defense is desperate for a Playmaking FS and Balanced SS.

What will you do to help take this team back to the promise land?

The Houston Texans were a welcomed surprise in 2011. They over-came numerous key injuries and made the playoffs for the rst

time in the franchises brief history. Now comes the challenge of

doing it all over again. The Texans are built on running the football.

Arian Foster and Ben Tate are an outstanding duo at running back

and Andre Johnson provides enough of a threat to keep defenses

honest. A run-rst and then play action pass philosophy will suit youwell with the Texans.

The defense was what stood out for Houston a year ago. Even with

the loss of Mario Williams, the Texans rushed the passer about as

well as anyone. J.J. Watt and Connor Barwin are a handful to deal

with and Brian Cushing is a tackling machine at middle linebacker.

Continuing to nd ways to sack the quarterback and create turn-

overs will be the key to your success in 2012.

The scouting department has a few areas of concern for the

Texans. One is to nd another Red Zone Threat WR to play next

to Andre Johnson. The right side of the offensive line also needsto be addressed after losing a few players in free agency. The

defense could also use a strong safety and even additional help

    at cornerback.

    Playing as a Player

The Texans could use another big play, Red Zone Threat WR tosolidify the receiver core. Youll be the number two wideout, but that

wont be a bad thing in this offense as Andre Johnson is sure to get

most of the attention from the defense. The defense is in need of a

Balanced SS to come in from Day 1 and be the difference maker and

help get Houston to the Super Bowl.

Last year proved to be disastrous for the Colts with the loss ofPeyton Manning. They hope to bounce back in the near future with

the drafting of franchise QB, Andrew Luck. Luck has his work cut out

for him. Indy has very few offensive weapons and a suspect offen-

sive line. Youll have to be very careful when coming up with your

    offensive gameplan.

The defense is in a little better shape but not without questions of

their own. The scheme is switching from a 4-3 to a 3-4 this year and

that means Dwight Freeney and Robert Mathis are now converted

to OLBs. Their cover skills are extremely low so make sure you are

blitzing these two guys more than dropping them back.

Scouting for this team can be both a nightmare and a blessing all

take some time to build the Colts up to what they once were.

Playing as a PlayerIndianapolis is an open eld when it comes to what player you want

    Playing as a Coach

The Jaguars have question marks on both sides of the ball. Forstarters, you need to decide if your QB of the future is currently

on the roster. Blaine Gabbert and Chad Henne have had tough

times in their early careers. The weapons for Jacksonville are also

lacking. They did sign Laurent Robinson and draft Justin Blackmon

to help but it may need even more. Maurice Jones-Drew has been

the work horse for the Jags. Use him to grind down the clock andfrustrate opposing defenses.

The defense is in much better position to succeed than the offense.

Daryl Smith and Paul Posluszny are excellent linebackers that the

rest of the defense feeds off of. The two safeties are serviceable but

you may look to improve on them in the years to come.

The main focus for the Jaguars scouts has to be on the offense. As

mentioned before, you must make a decision on the QB. You may

lean towards going back into the draft if the right player is there. ABalanced WR or Receiving TE will also go a long ways on improving

    your offensive statistics.

Playing as a PlayerThe Jags are a perfect place to come in as a Field General QB and

compete for the starting spot. A strong preseason should secureyou spot as the teams starting signal caller. A Balanced WR will also

get some early action in Jacksonville. The defense needs play makers

on the back end. A Balanced FS or Playmaking SS will take the Jags

    defense to the next level.

The defense is full of play makers. Tamba Hali is an elite pass rusher

    Playing as a Coach

The Miami Dolphins have a major dilemma at QB. One of your rstdecisions as head coach will be whether or not you want to start

Ryan Tannehill in Week 1. Hes currently third on the depth chart

but getting some reps in practice and preseason might be what he

needs to go into the season with condence. Regardless of whos

under center, he will have a difcult time nding open receivers.

The WR and TE core leave a lot to be desired and will need to beaddressed in the offseason.

The defense is good enough to keep you in games. Cameron Wake

and Karlos Dansby are players opposing offenses must gameplan

against. Vontae Davis, Sean Smith, and Richard Marshall are a solid

trio at CB in a division that can throw the ball extremely well. Itll take

a timely offense and turnovers on defense to rack up the wins with

    the current roster.

The draft will provide a few challenges for Miami. They desper-

ately need a threat at receiver to ease the pressure off the QB

and the running game. The safety position could also use a boostin play. Suring that up would give Miami one of the best second-

    arys in the NFL.

Playing as a PlayerIf you decide that none of the QBs are the answer for the Dol-

phins, you can come in as a West Coast QB and compete for thestarting job right away. Dominating the preseason should make

this a no brainer for coach when it comes time to decide who

starts. A Balanced WR or Receiving TE will also get to play from

Day 1. On defense, you can make a big splash as a Prototype FS

    Playing as a Coach

The Minnesota Vikings are a team on the rebuild and in a very competi-tive division. That can be a recipe for pain early on, so be prepared for

a longer rebuilding process than some other teams. In 2011, the Vikings

drafted Christian Ponder in the rst round but was only average.

Ponder will need to improve for the Vikings to stay on track with their

rebuilding plan and not go back and get another QB. To relieve the pres-

sure of the QB, make sure you use a heavy dose of Adrian Peterson.

The defense of the Minnesota Vikings is no doubt built around the

elite pass rushing abilities of Jared Allen. In fact, the front seven is for

the most part, fairly strong. The middle linebacker does need to be

upgraded as well as most of the secondary. Harrison Smith is a rookie

FS but has a ways to go in order to become a difference maker. The

Minnesota defense will be at its best when it can get opposing offenses

in obvious passing downs and put pressure on the QB.

Scouting for the Vikings will be critical. There are numerous holes to

ll so be sure you have a good plan before going into the draft. As

mentioned earlier, you may decide that you need to readdress theQB position. TE and LG are also spots that need help. The defense

needs major work done in the secondary to keep up with the high

power offenses in the NFC North.

    Playing as a Player

You have multiple options if youre looking to start right away on theVikings. A West Coast QB and Receiving TE will get instant playing

time and hopefully ignite the Minnesota offense. The defense is

craving a Cover 2 middle linebacker and Zone strong safety to help

hide a below average pass defense. You might be just what the

Vikings need to continue getting things back on track.

    Playing as a Coach

There arent many jobs better than coaching the New EnglandPatriots. With Tom Brady under center and countless weapons on

offense, you cant beat it. The Pats took the league by storm last

year by utilizing not one, but two TEs to stretch the eld. Stick to

the same gameplan and chuck the ball up and down the eld to the

TEs, Welker and newly acquired Brandon Lloyd.

The New England defense was a little bit of a letdown in 2011 and

they hope that improves this season. The Pats drafted Donta High-

tower and Chandler Jones in the rst round but both will need time

to develop into solid contributors. There are h
