Police tighten vigil at Kannadigaowned businessesBy Our Staff Reporter

The city police tightened security at establishments, especiallyeateries owned by Kannadigas, after a group attacked Data Udipirestaurant in MGR Nagar on Oct. 7.

Police arrested four persons from Jafferkhanpet who were in-volved in the attack.

After the news that former CM J. Jayalalithaa was denied bail bythe high court, a group of AIDMK functionaries gathered outside therestaurant and asked the owner to pull down the shutters.

Before the customers could leave and the employees could pulldown the shutters, the group hurled stones at the restaurant, breaking window panes and forcing customers to scramble out forsafety. A police officer said the four men arrested were not AIADMKmembers but accompanied party supporters who raised anti-Karnataka slogans outside the restaurant.

Senior officers decided to increase policing in areas near restau-rants and other establishments run by Kannadigas in view of theperceived threat to them from AIADMK supporters.

The four were arrested after a complaint filed by the restaurant’sowner. Employees of the restaurant identified the culprits.
