When did the playback system come into vogue in TamilCinema?

In the 1930s, there were no technical facilities to pre-record songs in a sound-recording theater before the com-mencement of the film shoot as it is done today. Songs wererecorded along with dialogues while the camera rolled.Consequently only artistes capable of singing with theirown voices were chosen to act. While the actor sang, themembers of the orchestra sat safely away from the camerarange and played the background musical score. If the actorhad to walk, the accompanying musicians too walked alongwith him carrying their instruments!

That’s why only instruments that could be carried orstrung round the necks were used in their music.Harmonium, flute, violin, clarinet, mridangam and suchwere commonly in use. No pianos or veenas, thank you!

In outdoor scenes, the instrument-players sat undertrees or on mats or trolley and played happily. If any playercommitted a mistake in playing a note or a swaram in thelast line or word, the full shot had to be taken afresh!

In one such song sequence, the famed hero and ‘StuntKing’ of Tamil Cinema of his day, P. S. Srinivasa Rao,playing the lead role of Lord Vishnu, was singing a songwhich was being shot. Being a trained classical musicianand also the music composer of the film ‘Srinivasa Kalyanam’(1934) he noticed a false off-key note being played by oneof the instrumentalists. At once he yelled ‘Cut’, but theDirector took no notice and went ahead with his work. Later, during the first show of the film at Crown Talkies, MintStreet, Madras, the audience howled with loud laughterwhen they heard Maha Vishnu yelling ‘CUT!’ in the middleof a song in poetic Tamil! An “SOS” message was at oncesent to Srinivasa Cinetone Studio on Poonamallee HighRoad in Vepery, and a technician raced in a car to reach thecinema faster than wind, and he simply scissored off theoffending frames in English. Surely, when the frames wereremoved there was a jump in the sound track and music flowin the picture, but nobody bothered about all that in thosedays!

In his later years, after retiring from movies, SrinivasaRao had his ‘bhajan music troupe’ in Alwarpet, Madras, inwhich noted citizens like Dr. Mathangi Ramakrishnan,Thangam Aiyadurai, and Y. G. Sundar took part and theywere his disciples. He also taught bhajans toM.S.Subbulakshmi.

The playback system came into existence in Calcuttaduring the mid-1930s and was used in Bengali and Hindifilms. In Madras, the famed trio of film pioneers,Muthuswami Iyer (Murugadasa), K. Ramnoth and A. K.Sekhar, built a studio in Adayar, Madras named Kartikeya(circa 1937) and released ads in magazines of that dayinviting producers to use the studio. And its facilities, according to the ad, included miniature photography andplayback system.

The first film produced by the talented trio in this studiowas ‘Sundaramurthy Nayanar’ (1937). But there is nopositive evidence to prove that songs in this film were pre-recorded or sung while the shooting was in progress. How-ever, the first known instance of the use of playback inTamil cinema took place in 1938 in ‘Nandakumar’.

By M. A. SADANANDNO HOLDS BARRED

What are the elements that coalesce in the shaping of a person’smind that, as in the case of the Pied Piper of Hameln, draws hundredsto their doom?

Law abiding fools like me who want to clack the computer whenthe grey cells strike without warning, and hoping to see the result inthe next Sunday’s ‘No Holds Barred’ column are denied the freedomof expression when the Electricity Board goes for a snooze at the mostcreative hour between 4 and 5 in the afternoon.

All good and bad things come to en end, or so we thought, but thePied Piper of Idinthakarai, who rules the Koodankulam environs, hasa bag of tricks up his torso and his word is law to the worshippers whowant to be a part of the sea by merging their bodies with the sea andLIVING in the sea. Brinologists will now write tomes of researchfindings and perhaps the next year’s Nobel in medicine will be a jointaward to the Idinthakarai brinologists.

To deny these chaps a cake walk, another school of thought hastaken shape and a non-thrust by a group of uglies is seen buried upto their belly buttons in sand. Atta boy! What courage! If a convoy ofsome, as yet unidentified, marine life swims up to see Mother India inthe raw, what better fare can the country offer than these humansalads! As some great philosopher, having given up his war againstignorance, said, “What fools these mortals be!

Not to be scoffed at by the Southies, an andolan gang in the Northhas started living in the river that is sought to be dammed. They canat least drink non-brine water and be clean. ‘The Old Man And TheSea’ by friend Ernest Hemingway comes to mind. For all the wisdomthat he accumulated over the years by eating fish, didn’t Ernest shoothimself dead?
