SMS to consumers to give up LPG subsidy uncalled forSir, Indian Oil Corporation has been soliciting its LPG consumers
through SMS to join its campaign of ‘Nation Building’ by giving up LPGsubsidy. While it is true that the burden arising out of the subsidy isheavy, the Oil companies must first set their house in order and supplyLPG cylinders at full cost to all its employees.
Furthermore, the Ministry of Petroleum and Oil should not exemptMPs, MLAs and bureaucrats from the 12 subsidized cylinder caps peryear to save on money. Oil companies must weed out the corruptionfrom the system to ensure that subsidized cylinders do not find a wayinto the open market. This in itself would bring about a huge saving. Many households do not consume 12 cylinders and do not keep trackof the consumption. Distributors take advantage of this and divert thebalance subsidy into the open market and make a killing. If Aadhaaris made mandatory to avail subsidy, even if the distributors resort todivert the stocks, at least the subsidy amount would get credited to theconsumers who do not use up the entire capped quantity. When thereare so many ways to restrict the supply of subsidized cylinders andsave money, the request of the oil companies to the common man, whois already hit hard by the spiraling prices of all essentials, is unjust anduncalled for. – V. S. Jayaraman, 31, Motilal Street, West Mambalam
Appeal to resume sale of ‘Children’s Health Mix’ to allSir, I am a regular buyer of the special ‘Health Mix Powder - Sathu
Maavu’ for infants and children from Public Health Center (Lake ViewRoad). When I went to buy the same this month I was surprised to notethat the sale has been restricted only to children born in the healthcenter and to outpatient kids registered with them. There was noexplanation from the staff to the new rule which I initially presumedwas due to shortage of stock. I appeal to the higher officials at PHC toresume sale of the health mix to everyone as it a good source of healthfood to infants and kids. – P. S. Parthasarathy, F4, SuganthyApartments, 22, Nara-simman Street, West Mambalam

Android app to help commuters tracklocations of MTC buses
G. Dileep Kumar, an IT employee, has developed a mobile Androidapplication ‘My MTC’ to keep track of plying MTC buses through GPStracking.
Dileep said that MTC has not provided any mechanism for itscommuters to keep track of bus schedules and delays in runningtime. It results in commuters waiting and spending anxious mo-ments at bus stops. He said that his ‘My MTC’ app would try to solvethis problem as it is a crowd sourcing application developed to trackreal time bus locations for Chennai city buses.
Bus commuters who download this app to their phones and use itcan update the current location of their bus during their commute.
The app would update this information into the server databaseand instantly notify any other user searching for the same busnumber about its current location. App users can also setup apermanent notification alarm so that they don’t have to process therequest every time.
The app also has a built-in offline database of bus stops, route mapsand fares which he said would be updated regularly.
Users would also get important news alerts about bus diversions, new buses, bus strikes and more.
Android phone users can download the ‘My MTC’ app from GooglePlay Store.
Dileep resides in Thoraipakkam. His phone number is 9176760402.

DRESS CODEGood old Mahatma Gandhi earned his law degree from
England where, during his studentship, he must haveworn trousers which protected him from the biting coldthat Mother Nature had decreed as nature’s gift to theisland.
Gandhi’s peregrinations took him to South Africa whereequatorial climate made him progressively shed the Brit-ish second skin of woollen clothes as his first foray intothings Indian and the compulsive draw to the all perva-sive dhoti of the Indian male. That, I believe, is one of thecauses that impelled him to dump his practice and a fewmolar teeth in South Africa and return to good old Indiawhere the Sun god was and is the reigning climatic deityto make the Indian a warm fellow. The degrees of warmthis dependant on one’s positioning relative to the equator!
Back in India, Gandhi plunged into a war to free thecountry from all that is imperial western, one phase ofwhich was the burning of all western clothes. Mounds ofwestern clothes including, I assume, the choking legalpractitioner’s black gown were made a bonfire of. Gandhi,in one of the meetings, representing the Congress, withthe Emperor in London, appeared swathed in a dhoti andshawl and his majesty could find no fault in his presenta-tion of early freedom for India. In answer to a presscorrespondent on how, in just his thin dhoti and shawl, hemanaged to tackle the cold at the palace, Gandhi isreported to have said,”His majesty wore enough clothesfor both of us”!
Dhoti-wearing Gandhi and Co won us freedom to estab-lish Sports Clubs and various venues of entertainmentamong other things. Yet, recently, a Sports Club inChennai is reported to have allegedly indicated to a dhoti-wearing Judge of the Madras High Court and his compan-ion lawyer friends in dhoti who are members of the Club, that dhoti disqualifies them from entering, and refusedthem entry because of their sartorial offence! That Judgesshould not be members of any Club is my verdict on thisnasty episode of dress code violation. Seclusion should betheir credo!
