…”At that time, Jesus was led by the Spirit into the desert to be tempted by the devil. He fasted for forty days and forty nights, and afterwards, he was hungry.” The opening lines of the

Gospel for our first Sunday of Lent set the tone for these forty days. We pray…“Lead us into the Desert.” Jesus entered into the desert. It was there He entered into prayer and found the strength to fight the devil and every evil. It was there that He pondered deeply the will of the Father in His Life. In the desert, He found strength and hungered more fully to continue His mission and ministry. We pray that we may find our way into the desert this Lent – time with God – strength for the journey – to reflect more deeply on our lives and on our Lord. Lead us into the desert following the example of Jesus Christ our Lord. …I am writing this on Tuesday night. I’ve just returned from the Church where we finished decorating and preparing for the season of Lent. This Lent, the Church is stark – a bit barren – a desert. May it remind us to enter into the desert and use this time to make our lives a little more simple – a little more focused on the Lord. …At the doors of the Church this weekend are the Lent Rice Bowls. The season of Lent calls us to make alms for those in need. Your small change (one less App, one less Latte, one less Movie, one less Drive Thru (for me, one less Polar Pop) – that small change literally can add up to make a big difference for those who are most in need. Please make use of the rice bowls as a reflection of your commitment to continue the compassionate care of Jesus Christ in our world. …The theme song for the season of Lent is: Into the Desert by Curtis Stephan and Sarah Hurt and can be found on itunes. The other songs I am listening to these days for prayer and inspiration: Keep Making Me by Sidewalk Prophets and The Well by Casting Crowns. Check them out. They certainly reflect our Lent theme and will be, hopefully, challenging for you. …Hopefully, you received your Lent newsletter this past week. It contains a complete listing of the programs and offerings at Saint Ambrose to help all of us use these days to enter more fully into prayer and reflection on our life with the Lord. Most Christians realize that they

should be doing something for Lent. Please consider inviting a family member or neighbor to join you for the Lent Mission, a scripture study, and/or the beautifully inspiring Passiontide that will take place in Holy Week. Please invite them to come to Mass with you on a weekend. Your personal invitation will make all the difference. …This weekend, 107 of our members will celebrate the Sacrament of Confirmation with Bishop Roger Gries, OSB. Please join me in praying that the Spirit of God will enter deeply into the hearts of our young people and the adults being confirmed. May this Spirit guide their actions and decisions. May this mighty Spirit give them strength and courage to walk in the ways of the Lord. …Use the season of Lent to strengthen your family time of prayer. Stations of the Cross are prayed each Friday at 7 pm. It’s a wonderful Lenten tradition for your family. …The Lord desires to lead us into the desert. The chapel is open weekdays from 7am until 8 pm so you can come and spend some time with the Lord in an out of the way place. It’s open on the weekend from 7am until 6pm. A great Lent idea….stop on the way home…or when you are running an errand. Step off your normal busy path for a few minutes in the desert of prayer, reflection, solitude and peace. Come to the chapel. …Several have noticed that our parish and school staffs are using the Lent logo on their emails. If you would like to use the same as your ‘email signature’ for Lent, go to our parish website (www.StAmbrose.us) to download. BTW – by the end of the month you will see a new, fresh, more convenient homepage for our parish website. Last week over 1,000 users visited our website. On average, over 50 percent of those who receive our weekly eblast (about 3000) open and read them – wonderful!! If you do not receive the weekly eblast, you would find it a very helpful source of information. Sign up by going to: www.StAmbrose.us/eblast. …Next Wednesday is an important night for our community as we welcome Brooks Gibbs to our parish. He is a nationally acclaimed presenter on bullying. His point – bullies never go away. His presentation is how to deal with that reality. Given all things that take place in our world, I strongly encourage every parent and junior high/high school student to attend. We need to hear this together. We need to work together to make holier, happier

choices for ourselves and for our community. The presentation takes place at 7pm in Hilkert Hall. Again, given all things, I encourage all parents and students to attend. …Also, on Wednesday evening, our parish will join the rest of the diocese in inviting people, who have not been to Confession for a while, to come ‘home’ to the Church and experience the outpouring of God’s grace and mercy. There’s a man who comes to Mass every weekend now who came last year because of a radio ad. I vividly remember him coming to me last year and finding the outpouring of God’s grace and mercy. Please pray that hearts will be open to hearing this invitation to come to the Lord. We would also respectfully ask that we use next Wednesday, from 5 pm until 8 pm, for those who have not been to the sacrament for years. Later in Lent, we will have many opportunities for you to celebrate the sacrament of Reconciliation in preparation for Holy Week/Easter. …It was a great joy to celebrate the Rite of Sending last week with 11 adults from our community who are preparing for the Easter Sacraments. Please keep them in your prayers as they journey to the Lord. This weekend our candidates and catechumens will celebrate the Call to Continuing Conversion at the 12 noon Mass. …County Auditor (and parishioner) Mike Kovach sent some information last week for any of our families struggling with mortgage payments due to financial hardship (income loss, divorce, significant increase in medical expenses, death of a family member). There’s a program that may be able to offer some help and relief (up to $35,000). There’s no charge to check it out or for the service. Call his office at 330.725.9137. …Our Fish Fry team is up and running!! Please join us next Friday (and every Friday throughout Lent) for great food and wonderful people. We serve from 4:30pm until 7pm. There’s also take out available. All the proceeds will be earmarked to help renovate the chapel. …Lead us into the desert. Jesus went to the desert for prayer and reflection. Take some time to come to the desert this Lent. It’s a place for you to spend some time with the Lord. It’s a place for you to find solitude, and serenity, and peace.

C . The Eucharistic Sacrifice of our Lord (Mass) is of benefit to sinners, living and dead. St. Ambrose preached, "We have loved them during life; let us not abandon them in death, until we have conducted them by our prayers into the house of the Lord." If you have a loved one who has passed away, please know that Mass Intentions are available at St. Ambrose. It’s a perfect way to honor their birthdate, anniversary, or just because! As we sing in our gathering song this weekend,

“Enter the journey. Come to the song. By God you are chosen, by name you are called to follow the vision, carry the cross. Enter the journey of faith as the family of God,” we have entered the Lenten season and begin our journey through the desert to the cross of Easter. Our offertory song, Into the Desert, reminds us each week that if we allow ourselves to make me in our busy lives for quiet reflec on, God will speak to

us and, there, we will find the peace we seek. Throughout this season, there are many opportuni es to find peace and experience the mercy of God. This Wednesday, March 12, our parish will par cipate in the diocesan wide celebra on of the Sacrament of Penance from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. You are encouraged to a end and to invite family members or friends who’ve either been away from the church or haven’t taken advantage of this sacrament of healing and forgiveness in a while. (Please note: there will be no 5:30 p.m. daily Mass on Wednesday because our priests will be hearing confessions; at this me, a prayer service will be held).

! We are asking each member – young and senior – to make a small sacrifice and collect the change/dollars (e.g. one less coffee or candy bar or app and put the savings into your rice bowl). If everyone does something like this for forty days – the change will allow us to build a home or two ($7500 each) for the poorest of the poor in our mission community. As Christ sacrificed for us, can we make a small change that will make a big difference for those in need this Lent? Bring this filled rice bowl to Church on Palm Sunday.

EDUCATION NEWS OUR CHILDREN D S

8 G S T The eighth graders, who are currently reading The Diary of Anne Frank in Reading class, visited the Face-to-Face program at Shaarey Tikvah congrega on in Beachwood on

February 13. The students saw pictures and ar facts from the Holocaust and listened to the story of a man who was displaced in Europe during WWII. The visit to the synagogue "truly broadened our horizons about Judaism" says eighth grader Kyle Schneider. Likewise, Caitlin Drake felt "inspired" by the story of the survivor. Each student walked away with a memory bag which contained symbolic items; for example, a bu on reminding students to close their lips when thinking of an unkind word, and to unbu on or speak up for those who are being bullied. That day, the eighth grade learned a

meless message about the importance of having tolerance and respect for one another. Good luck to Jack Hlucky, Molly Main, Alex Balsassy, Anna Krizsa, Delaney Hanlon, Charlie Herman, Grace Harley, Rachel Russo, John Monnin and Jessica Koeth who will represent Saint Ambrose School at the Northeast Ohio Science and Engineering Fair at Cleveland State University on March 11. S A S S P "R M C C " Students at Saint Ambrose School par cipated in a na onwide effort to "Read the Most Coast to Coast" on Friday, February 28. They were among hundreds of thousands of students who joined others across the country in this 3rd annual event that encourages students to read more. This year 502 of our students par cipated and helped set a new record of 4,987,949 Accelerated Reader Quizzes taken in one day. All students who paricipated received a Cer ficate of Na onal Par cipa on.

PSR PSR FAMILY HOME SCHOOL OPTION BENEFITTING FROM CARLA WOODRING’S GENEROUS SPIRIT!! Families have options for participating in the Parish School of Religion. PSR sessions are offered three days of the week: Mondays at 6:30-8:00pm, Wednesdays at 4:30-6:00pm and Saturdays at 9:00-10:30am. Within PSR grade level classes, volunteer catechist and assistants support parents’ efforts to pass on our faith through faith-centered learning experiences. Families are invited to PSR Prayer Services, teaching Masses, and parents join students for grade level events and workshops to learn about our catholic traditions. Another option, PSR Family Home School (FHS), centers on greater involvement of parents—as they serve as their child’s catechist. The parish provides resources and training to parents, to provide up-to-date Catholic theology to share with their children. Carla Woodring, parishioner and FHS participant with her grandchildren, has helped the FHS option better serve our families. Carla knows the good that can come from talking with children (and grandchildren!) about our faith. “The discussions become circular—with God, child and parent. The adult grows, the child grows in their love of and relationship with God.” “It provides an opportunity to share values and priorities” as you drive to school or sporting events—as you cover the topics. Carla provides practical advice for parents and shares her wisdom from working with her grandchildren! Carla has improved communication with our FHS families, keeping them better informed about PSR events and activities leading to increased participation this year. Parents are joining PSR catechists at training meetings, learning about the Old and New Testaments and Church History, which Carla has facilitated over the last few months. Want to know more about the FHS option? Call the PSR Office at 330-460-7302 or e-mail [email protected] . May God bless Carla and our FHS families!!

FROM JURELL MESSAGE

330-460-7338 [email protected]

If you didn’t know, teenagers are statistically the scariest population to work with in the world. I know it’s not the best news to hear but

sometimes I find that to be true. I remember going to the Brunswick library and I had to pass a group of teens that looked like they were causing trouble. I was literally terrified that I might get some rude comments or get bullied. But I passed through with no problems. I couldn’t help but think: Why do our minds immediate go to that place? And are we as a parish scared of interacting with teenagers? I sure hope not. Because regardless of age, it’s our responsibility to share the Gospel with all people.

Interestingly enough, evangelization stands front and center to Catholicism. And this mission to share our faith comes to us in our baptism. Pope Paul VI re-established this idea in 1974: “The Church exists to evangelize” and “evangelization is the essential mission of the Church.” No wonder the Church is trying to re-claim it with “The New Evangelization.” Over the next couple weeks, I’m inviting you to read on about the ways we can evangelize effectively. With this bulletin series on evangelization and culture, I’m here to help you learn more about the cultural shifts so that you can be fearless in diving deep into your Catholic mission to evangelize the Church—yes, even teenagers. With gratitude,
